Kasautii Zindagii Kay (Trials of Life) is an Indian soap opera created and produced by Ekta Kapoor's Balaji Telefilms.[1][2] It premiered on September 25, 2018 and airs on Star Plus.[3] It is a reboot of the 2001 series Kasautii Zindagii Kay. It stars Parth Samthaan, Erica Fernandes and Hina Khan.[4][5][6]

Plot

Anurag Basu and Prerna Sharma are two individuals who belong to two different worlds. Prerna is the daughter of Rajesh Sharma who works for Moloy Basu. Moloy has three children; Anurag, Nivedita and Tapur. Anurag's mother Mohini dislikes the Sharmas because of their poor status and leaves no opportunity to berate them. Anurag and Prerna study in the same university but barely have any conversation. All girls in the college are attracted towards Anurag except Prerna. Due to a series of events, Prerna and Anurag start conversing, thus slowly forming a bond of friendship.

Enter Naveen Babu whom Mohini considers as her brother. He is a pervert and has a history with many women. He sets his eyes on Prerna but she ignores his advances. Naveen shares his feelings with Mohini who takes their proposal forward. The Sharmas reject the relation as Naveen is too old and divorced twice. Mohini feels humilitated. She sends a letter to the Sharmas stating that Rajesh took a loan from Moloy and the deadline has exceeded and they will have to evacuate their house. Prerna reads the letter before everybody and gets emotional. She agrees to marry Naveen but with a condition that Naveen will help her family. A mysterious woman named Madhuri appears who continuously gives advices to Naveen on how to conquer Prerna. She is revealed to be Naveen's wife. Prerna's family, Anurag and Moloy dislike this union. Anurag tries everything to stop the wedding but fails each time. On the wedding day, Anurag kidnaps Prerna and sets up Madhuri as the bride. Naveen's lies are caught and the marriage is called off. Meanwhile Prerna starts realising that she has feelings for Anurag. The day she decides to propose to Anurag, his ex Mishka enters the Basu house. Mohini seizes the opportunity to announce that Anurag and Mishka will get engaged soon. Prerna witnesses Mishka saying I love you to Anurag and is left heartbroken.

Amidst the chaos, Komolika makes her entry. Komolika is Mishka's elder sister and the daughter of Siddhant Chaubey, a powerful politician. She is arrogant and ruse and attracts male attention wherever she goes.

Through a series of events, Anurag and Mishka get engaged. Prerna is heartbroken assuming her love was one sided. On the other hand, Anupam makes Anurag realise that he has been in love with Prerna since a long time but was unaware. Eventually, Anurag and Prerna confess their feelings to each other. On the other hand, Komolika starts getting interested in Anurag. Seeing Prerna and Anurag plan a future with each other, she decides to create misunderstandings between them. When Moloy finds out about it, he confronts her. Thus, Komolika gets Moloy killed in a car crash. However, Moloy slips in to coma but Rajesh dies. Prerna and her family is very sad. Komolika convinces her father to give Basu Publications a government contract thus saving them from the crisis. However, she ask Anurag to marry her to save his father.

Days pass by, and Prerna and Anurag haven't talked to each other yet about Anurag's marriage promise.Soon Anurag asks Komolika regarding the papers of Prerna’s house. She puts in a condition that he must get engaged to her in order to obtain the papers. A compelled Anurag announces his engagement with Komolika to his family much to the delight of Mohini and Nivedita. He breaks down on his compulsion of not being able to fulfil his promise of marrying Prerna. A happy Nivedita invites the Sharma’s to the engagement. They are shocked learning this. Prerna gets shattered and tries to confront Anurag regarding this situation.

On the day of Anurag and Komolika's engagement, Prerna tries to stop the engagement still believing it to be a lie. However, Anurag badly insults her infront of everyone that she is zero and she was a girl easily to get fooed by anyone and says that Komolika is the perfect match for him. Prerna is shocked and devastated after hearing his insult.

Reception

Critical Response

The show has received mixed reviews from critics. Shweta Kesari from India Today said, "Parth Samthaan and Erica Fernandes beautifully fit into the shoes of punctual Anurag and carefree Prerna. The grandeur and magnificence of the show will make your a jaw drop. The makers have tried to retain the essence of Kolkata and Bengalis. Overall the show is a complete package of entertainment for soap viewers!"[9]

Soumya Srivastava from Hindustan Times described the show as "louder and garnish" and wrote that, "The background score is excessive. It plays without reason and way too often. Whether the scene demands it or not, a joyful, somber or a comical tone is always there to force your brain into thinking that this is how you are supposed to feel right now.[10]

Times Now commented that, "The reboot takes you in the lives of Anurag and Prerna that were part of our every day lives and the first episode is all about nostalgia of the epic Kasautii Zindagii Kay." [11]

Ratings

In its debut week, the series opened with 5589 million impressions in urban areas thereby being 10th most-watched show during the week.[12][13][14][15]

In UK in its second week, the series was the top most watched show on Thursday with 101100 views.[16]
