Main Page error reports

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 19:19 on 7 June 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed, determined not to be an error, or the item has rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Change'6

Chang'e 6 has completed a further stage, as the ascender docked and passed the samples to the lunar orbiter yesterday (6 Jun). The orbiter will return the samples in about 2 weeks while the ascender will now be crashed into the moon. We should update the blurb accordingly. Andrew🐉(talk) 11:28, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That's not an error, Andrew Davidson, and you would know that ITN blurb change discussions are to be held at ITN. Schwede66 12:18, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Starliner

The word maiden in the Starliner blurb seems too colloquial a metaphor while our article maiden is mostly sexual content which may confuse. We should just use the simple word first, like the article's lead. Andrew🐉(talk) 11:36, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sheinbaum

  • Claudia Sheinbaum is elected as the president of Mexico. — "As the" is redundant, in my book at least. – Sca (talk) 15:25, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not done. If we remove as the, we'll be forced by MOS:JOBTITLES to capitalise President. But capitalising it also isn't what modern sources do and is also consistent with some other hooks we post, hence we've come to a compromise that we use the "modified form" including as the, rather than the "unmodified form". I intend to try and change JOBTITLES to eliminate this silliness, but for now this is the situation.  — Amakuru (talk) 15:55, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Disagree. Job titles should be capped only when preceding the person's name, and then only absent intervening wordage or punctuation. Thus, "Claudia Sheinbaum is elected president of Mexico" would be correct. That's U.S. usage from time immemorial. (Never have figgered out what British usage is.) -- Sca (talk) 19:15, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
FWIW, the most natural phrasing for me would be '...is elected as President of Mexico'. It looks very strange without capitalising. MOS:JOBTITLES must be the most confusing and nonsensical guideline we have - it should be abolished. Modest Genius talk 16:40, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

General discussion

Profanity on the main page

Are we to assume that Wikipedia is an adults only encyclopedia? Could I let my kids browse it as they might any school resource? I think not. Under the "Did you know section?" I found this: "that the essay "It's Decorative Gourd Season, Motherfuckers" has been described as an ode to autumn?" Keep it up and I will have the parents association block wikipedia and various content blockers too.

Many project pages and articles down on many language wikipedias

Main page is throwing the error: [Xou2xQpAMNIAA-9stcIAAACN] 2020-04-06 23:09:58: Fatal exception of type "Wikimedia\Rdbms\DBQueryError" LetUsNotLoseHearT 23:10, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Appears to be working now.LetUsNotLoseHearT 23:35, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
For those wondering what happened, there's an incident report. Short version: an automated script caused a database error at Wikidata, leading to a major failure for all pages (on any project) that were associated with a Wikidata entry. Modest Genius talk 13:29, 8 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"Main page" listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect Main page. Please participate in the redirect discussion if you wish to do so. Interstellarity (talk) 20:52, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Can an admin tag this redirect as an RFD? I can't do it myself because the redirect is fully-protected. I listed it at Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2020_April_7#Main_page. Interstellarity (talk) 20:57, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like a bad idea if it will be the type that breaks the redirect, and mostly useless if it doesn't. Perhaps notify page watchers by tagging and posting at Talk:Main page? — xaosflux Talk 21:29, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes indeed it would be good if there was an option not to break the redirect in cases like this where deletion isn't going to happen. I also can't see that its likely that this will be changed-WP:SNOW. Crouch, Swale (talk) 21:32, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This redirect gets 10-15,000 hits a day, I'm not sure breaking it is a good idea. Merely posting here should get it plenty of exposure though. Hut 8.5 21:58, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Not done: Per discussion above. Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 02:00, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
