San Carlos City is a 2nd class city in the province of Pangasinan, Philippines. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 154,264 people in 28,025 households. Recently its former mayor Julian V. Resuello was assassinated on April 28, 2007 during an event at the city's plaza and later died at St. Lukes Medical Center on April 30, 2007.

History

The place now called San Carlos City was already a flourishing community since pre-colonial times. Called Binalatongan, or "where the mongo plants thrive", it was the capital of Luyag na Caboloan, an ancient kingdom ruled by Ari Kasikis, comprising the present-day provinces of Tarlac, Zambales, Nueva Ecija,, La Union, Pangasinan, and Benguet. The name of the kingdom was derived from the abundance of mongo plants along the San Juan riverbanks, and that of the king dom from a variety of bamboo called bulo. Caboloan is also the name of the primitive Pangasinense dialect, the purest form of which is spoken by the natives of Binalatongan.
