This is the Wikipedia:Help desk. While the Wikipedia 'Henriett Seth F.' page does have much room for improvement (desperately needs skilled style/format editing), the farce referred to above seems to regard the Wikia 'Henriett Seth F.', Autism Wiki page instead. --Kevjonesin (talk) 06:29, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What can I do about an article that seems more like an advertisement for a company than a valid article?

I've come across Diamond Pet Foods. It contains some very glowing language about the company, such as "...focused on providing the best nutrition for every pet, whether it was an expensive show animal or a child's free puppy or kitten." Sounds like marketing bullshit to me. I also wonder what makes a pet food company notable enough to deserve an article anyway. Where do I go with such concerns? HiLo48 (talk) 08:17, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Aside from some product recalls, it hasn't received any real media notice, which makes it a prime target for WP:Afd or WP:PROD. I'd go for the former myself, citing WP:NBUSINESS as justification. Afd is easy if you've got Twinkle or something similar installed, a pain in the neck to do manually. Clarityfiend (talk) 09:47, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to nominate it for Wiki-oblivion, I'd be happy to Afd it on your behalf. Clarityfiend (talk) 09:56, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well, yes, it does seem the right path here. It's been around for a long time. It will be interesting to see the arguments in its defence. HiLo48 (talk) 11:47, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. Regarding Title of my article iON Manufacturing Solution

Currently the title of my article is ION Manufacturing Solution. However I need i in iON small letter because it is brand name. Please do the needful. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chirantan Ghosh (talkcontribs) 11:10, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The first letter of page names is automatically capitalized. I have added {{lowercase title}} which writes it lower case on the article page itself. In many other places like searches and categories it will always be capitalized. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:20, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
User:Chirantan Ghosh/sandbox is still a user space draft. If it is moved to mainspace, the appropriate coding explained by m'learned friend PrimeHunter can be added. At the moment, IMHO, the draft is far too promotional in tone to be moved to mainspace. Issues in Article

Hi, I am getting these errors

    • This article appears to be written like an advertisement
    • This article uses bare URLs for citations. (April 2013)

Please let me know how can I proceed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chirantan Ghosh (talkcontribs) 11:35, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

(Note: article is most likely ION_Manufacturing_Solution). CaptRik (talk) 11:45, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Please carefully read Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations. The article has a large amount of content that reads like an advert for the company's services rather than factual encyclopaedic content. Note that YouTube videos are not normally allowed as references either. Once you think the article is in a suitable state, you can remove the tags yourself indicating errors from the top of the article. Please note though, you may well have to remove quite a lot of the current article content first to meet the criteria needed. Please also pay attention to the notability criteria in that FAQ. If you can provide more third-party references that would help a lot. CaptRik (talk) 11:57, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As well as reading like an advertisement, and failing to establish the company's notability, your article does not make it clear what the company makes or supplies. It starts "iON Manufacturing Solution is an integrated manufacturing ERP on Cloud", and continues like that, with a series of marketing buzzwords. A Wikipedia article should provide useful information about its subject. Maproom (talk) 13:48, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And speaking of marketing buzzwords, please read WP:SOLUTION! --Orange Mike | Talk 18:26, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Otto Basler

I just wanted to tell you that your entry on the German philogist Otto Basler is not correct. Especially it's not true that he taught in Freiburg from 1952 on. Strange citation error - still there

    Resolved

I already asked this at Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2013 April 13#Strange citation error, but I still don't really know how to fix this. The problem is with the citation named HDEI. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 13:18, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Simply changing editor[1]-last to editor1-last also doesn't fix the problem. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 13:24, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There are two problems: |editor[1]-last= should be |editor1-last=, |editor[1]-first= should be |editor1-first=, |editor[2]-last= should be |editor2-last=, etc.
    |editor-last= and |editor1-last= are synonyms of each other. You need to renumber all of the editors as either editor-, editor2-, ... or as editor1-, editor2-, ...
    Make sense?
    Trappist the monk (talk) 13:27, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I followed your advice and this change fixed it. I also see that this is what the documentation of {{Cite book}} says. Thank you. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 13:37, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Someone had updated the examples to show editor[n]-last, where [n] should have been replaced by a number. I fixed the documentation a few days ago after this popped up. --  Gadget850 (Ed) talk 13:43, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Category name reserved characters

Where can I find a list of characters that should not be included in category names?

    Trappist the monk (talk) 15:22, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not aware that there are any such characters. Afaik, category names basically follow the same rules as article titles. They should simply be a descriptive phrase, so there's no need for any characters other than letters and digits anyway. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 15:26, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I'm particularly interested in using a colon so that the category name is short and clear. The colon will help. Technical restrictions for article names are listed at WP:NCTR.
    Trappist the monk (talk) 16:19, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Category names are page names and the same limitations apply. Colons are possible, for example in Category:Avatar: The Last Airbender. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:33, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Without knowing what article you are referring to I can only speculate - I think at least part of the problem stems from your misconception that Wikipedia has "company profiles" - we most definitely do not do "profiles" - we have encyclopedic articles about notable subjects. International broadcast

Heya, I lurk on a bunch of television articles, and was hoping to get some clarification on the inclusion of International broadcast tables, preferably from someone with some familiarity editing TV articles. WP:MOS:TV seems to say fairly unambiguously, albeit briefly, that listing every channel a show is aired on, is discouraged. And when I see a list like this I shudder. If the show is produced in an English-speaking country, should we be chopping these lists down to include only English-speaking countries that air the show? It seems that WP:MOS:TV is specifically encouraging this. Thanks! Cyphoidbomb (talk) 18:20, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I can't think of any valid reason to "privilege" English speaking countries over others like that. This is the Wikipedia written in the English language, it is not the Wikipedia only for stuff that happens in English speaking countries. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 18:29, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've purged the whole damned thing, with a wikilink to WP:MOS:TV. You'll have to monitor it to make sure the mess doesn't re-appear. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:33, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate the assist. Do you by any chance know where I could find dialogue about this subject? Need help in resolving an issue.

Greetings, I'm trying to help an established Russian theater director edit his wikipedia page. Since my English is better than my Russian, I have decided to post my question here. Basically, the article contains a "Proposed deletion process" tag. In the discussion, person A states, "Relevance?", and person B responds with a link containing a great number of online articles, etc, suggesting that the person in question is indeed important enough to have his own wikipedia page. This discussion took place last year, but the tag is still there and no further progress has been made. How would I go about removing this tag? Thanks! Ikalnitsky

I'm a highly experienced editor, but here's something I'm unclear on. I know that interwiki links are now supposed to be handled using WikiData, but if somebody adds such a link to an article in the old way, what should I do about it? Revert it? Leave it for a bot to handle? Fix it somehow? Looie496 (talk) 19:57, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If the interwiki link is already contained in the Wikidata item, just revert/remove it and notify the user who added it. If it isn't, you should first ensure that it's a correct link, and then add it to the Wikidata item before removing it. FrigidNinja 20:14, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Need for references within section that has a main article

Ok another question, when a section of an article has a main article (e.g. with Template:Main), assuming this main article covers the same material and is well sourced, is it acceptable to omit references? I'm almost certain I read a WP namespaced article stating this is NOT ok, but I can't find it... Personally, as a reader I think it looks bad to omit references under any justification. Thanks! — MusikAnimal talk 23:20, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Definitely not okay. Each article and its content must stand on its own. This was discussed recently (or close enough) here: Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)/Archive 103#Citations on linked pages. Note that every person who was on the other side didn't have a leg to stand on, though they might not agree:-)--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:47, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cool that's what I thought. But isn't there an article from Wikipedia that covers this? For example a page similar to Wikipedia:Citing_sources? I've seen it before, searched around and could't find it. I was recently in this debate, and linking to an official WP article would have put an end to it. E.g. edit summary adding ref per WP:SOMETHING. Thanks again — MusikAnimal talk 14:56, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If there is I haven't found it but the clear implication of WP:INTEGRITY speaks to the issue. If we need to be careful in a single article that the placement of the source allows our readers to verify the content, then perforce, the extreme remove of hoping a reader somehow will find the sourcing of the same or similar content in a separate article is woefully inadequate to maintain source integrity.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 19:08, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Or put another way:
    • If you want to upload an image from your computer for use in an article, you must determine the proper license of the image (or whether it is in the public domain). If you know the image is public domain or copyrighted but under a suitable free-license, upload it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of here, so that all projects have access to the image (sign up). If you are unsure of the licensing status, see the file upload wizard for more information. Please also read Wikipedia's image use policy.
    • If you want to add an image that has already been uploaded to Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons, add [[File:File name.jpg|thumb|Caption text]] to the area of the article where you want the image to appear – replacing File name.jpg with the actual file name of the image, and Caption text with a short description of the image. See our picture tutorial for more information. I hope this helps.Template:Z40--ukexpat (talk) 13:27, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know what is making this happen, but there is a "wikilink embedded in URL title" error appearing in Administrative divisions of Murmansk Oblast even though there is no explicit wikilink in the reference. There is a {{lang|ru}} template in a reference, which appears to automatically insert "[[Category:Articles containing Russian language text]]" into the reference's URL. I don't know how to fix this. It looks like this category insertion is done by Template:Lang. I'm guessing that someone needs to tell the Category to attach itself to the article but not display in the reference. Or something. Jonesey95 (talk) 04:30, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

More examples of this problem in articles tagged with other languages using template:lang: Ah Boys to Men, Aappilattoq, Kujalleq, Brandenburg Gate, Bozdağ. This problem spans many, if not all, languages. Jonesey95 (talk) 05:30, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
{{lang}} should not be used in |title= when |url= is used in the citation because |url= and {{lang}} are competing to the same resource (|title=). Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, the contents of |title= are passed out of the citation in WP:COinS metadata for use by external referencing tools. Including {{lang}} in |title= corrupts that data because Category:Articles containing Russian language text is not part of the cited work's title. The |title= parameter of that particular citation should be rewritten from:
    |title={{lang|ru|Население отдельных национальностей по возрастным группам и полу по субъектам Российской Федерации}} (''Population by nationality, by age group and sex, by the federal subjects of Russia'')
    to:
    |title=Население отдельных национальностей по возрастным группам и полу по субъектам Российской Федерации
    |trans-title=Population by nationality, by age group and sex, by the federal subjects of Russia

Thanks, that is helpful. I edited the error explanation and instructions for fixing the error. The downside to losing {{lang}} is that the article drops out of the Category:Articles containing Russian language text. I suppose that's not the end of the world. Jonesey95 (talk) 16:09, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Hi,

I believe that allowing users to toggle drop-down-definitions for all links, would save energy and time spent researching. "Drop-down-definitions" would alter all links to other pages on a page so that a short 1 sentence definition drops down and allows the user to read it, then open the link to learn more if they want to. If this were in place, time would not be wasted waiting for the new tabbed webpage to open.

    Thanks,

    Pornography in Ecuador

The Information of this page: Editing Pornography by region (section) in Latin America, about Ecuador it is wrong, since The National Laws in Ecuador is encouraging about mental health of people. And prohibites those kinds of acts. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.7.109.241 (talk) 09:33, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you have information cited to a reliable source that can improve an article - in this case Pornography by region#Latin America, you are welcome to edit the article and add it. The current claim in the in the article cites a report from 2007 which says "Según la legislación Nacional la pornografía no es ilegal siempre y cuando no se vean inmiscuidos menores de edad." Are you saying that this is no longer true? If so, you need to cite a reliable source that says that the law has changed. In any case, the talk page Talk:Pornography by region is a better place to discuss it than here. --ColinFine (talk) 12:18, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In particular, please don't post copyright violations either at the help desk or elsewhere. I have deleted the talk page for that and other reasons, and echo David Biddulph's suggestion that you work at improving Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Born Freak instead. I would like to add that the content you (editor at IP 82.1.248.235) are attempting to submit is full of promotional language and "peacock" phrases that make the article unsuitable for Wikipedia. (edit conflict) I don't know what you mean by "launched a page". You have created a user account User:ServeProtect, and used it to ask the question above. You have not created a Wikipedia article, and there is no Wikipedia article named ServeProtect.
As you are connected with "Serve & Protect", you are strongly advised against involvement with any article about it: please read Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest. Maproom (talk) 16:15, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The various replies above, though all follow Wikipedia policies, may come across as a bit hostile, so I wanted to explain what is going on in a slightly more friendly way. It sounds as if what you are trying to do is to promote your organisation on Wikipedia. Doing so, in any form, is not allowed (and it makes no difference whether the organisation is commercial or not, or whether it is worthy or thoroughly objectionable), and denizens of Wikipedia sometimes get annoyed when people try to do it. So corporate usernames, articles that are promotional in tone, articles edited by people closely associated with the topic, and articles on subjects which are too new to have earned much recognition in reliable sources such as newspapers, are all unlikely to be accepted. You are very welcome to stay and contribute to Wikipedia on other subjects, using a different username. --ColinFine (talk) 22:53, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I assume you are talking about Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Crawford Alchemy Blueprint for Operational Excellence. The submitted article was declined because it did not establish its subject's notability. Notability is established by providing reliable sources that are independent of the subject - your own publications and website do not meet this requirement. Also, if you are the creator of the methodology described in the article then you almost certainly should not be writing a Wikipedia article about it - see our conflict of interest guideline. It might be an error generated by the MediaWiki Authentication System. I can't say anything more specific, since I've never seen that error myself and cannot find the displayed tag on MediaWiki. I don't know whether this is documented somewhere. It might be the error message displayed described at the 8th bullet point, where the session referenced by the token doesn't match the actual session, though that is just a guess on my part. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 19:09, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Kahil EL Zabar

Hi Wikipedia, I noticed as a explored your page of African American Drummers you seem to miss or over look the esteemed Kahil EL Zabar from Chicago. Please research this music icon,as he should be added to your list. He has made many major contributions to music in his almost 60 years of age and it needs to be recognized. Regards,

Don Albinson From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

(on right side with photo): Don Albinson Photo Born November 17, 1921 Sparta, MI Died November 17, 2008 Minneapolis, MN Nationality American Industrial Design Career Contributed to multiple significant Herman Miller projects while in the Eames office, 1946-1959 Knoll 1601 Stack Chair, 1965 Westinghouse Office Seating Line, 1974 DoMore Neo 7 landscape system, 1984 Albi stack chair, Fixtures 1987 Stylex Bounce stack chair, 1997

Don Charles Albinson (November 22, 1921 – November 17, 2008) was an American industrial designer who made many contributions to the world of modern furniture. He worked with Charles and Ray Eames for 13 years, helping develop many of the seminal Herman Miller furniture pieces from the mid century – the bent plywood chair, the fiberglass shell chair, the aluminum group set, and the Eames Lounge chair, to name a few. He later developed the Knoll Stack chair, the Westinghouse office line, an update to the DoMore Series 7 landscape system named Neo 7, the Albi stack chair for Fixtures, and the Bounce chair for Stylex.

    Biography

Albinson was born in 1921 in Sparta, MI and raised in Detroit, MI. He attended Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1939, where he met Charles Eames, Ray Kaiser, Harry Bertoia, Eliel and Eero Saarinen, Ralph Rapson and other luminaries. He also met his future wife, Nancy Blair Wilcox, at Cranbrook as well. He worked with Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen on the prototypes for the award-winning Eames – Saarinen designs for the 1941 Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. He was drafted and served as a pilot in World War II. Upon returning from the war, he moved the family to Los Angeles to work in the Eames office. He worked in the Eames Office from 1946 – 1959. He was the lead designer for the 13 years he worked in the office. During his years with Eames, Albinson was directly involved with the development and production of iconic Eames furniture designs such as the molded plywood screen, the dining chair with metal legs (DCM), the Aluminum Group Chair, and several other products on which he shared more than a dozen patents with Eames. He also helped with the construction the Eames Case Study House in Pacific Palisades in 1949, as well as the Max DePree house in Zeeland, MI, along with numerous other furniture and film projects.

In 1964 Albinson moved the family to southeastern Pennsylvania; he had been offered the position of Design Director for Knoll, in East Greenville, Pennsylvania. He was tasked with getting a number of challenging projects into production, as well as given the opportunity to shepherd his own chair design into production, the iconic 1601 stacking chair. Knoll introduced the stacking chair in 1965 and it won the AID Award in 1967. He was Design Director from 1964 - 1971; during his tenure he put into production such seminal furniture pieces as the Pollack Executive chair, the Platner steel wire Lounge collection, the Don Petitt chair, and many others. He was the Design Director at Knoll until 1971. After that time, he became an independent consultant, designing projects for Westinghouse, Domore, Stylex and Fixtures.

In 1974 Westinghouse introduced the ASD Group of office seating, and it remained a very successful line for many years. In 1984 he redesigned the DoMore Series 7 landscape furniture system, rebranding it the Neo 7 System. The Albi stack chair was introduced by Fixtures in 1987, and continued to be in production some 25 years later. The final contract furniture project was a stack chair for Stylex, the Bounce chair, introduced in 1997 and still in production through 2013. In 1977 the Allentown (Pennsylvania) Art Museum featured an exhibition of Albinson’s furniture designs. In 2005 he donated his design archive to the Special Collections Department at Stanford University.

Don was always curious about the mechanics of things, and approached each project with an element of curiosity, research and engineering, ultimately weaving those elements into the aesthetics of the specific challenge. He mentored and influenced many young designers, and his legacy touched many lives, in a truly positive way. A scholarship was set up in 2013 at Cranbrook Academy of Art, in Bloomfield Hills, MI, rewarding a deserving 3D Design student in the MFA program with a scholarship each year to provide financial assistance. It was the final and fitting gesture to bring everything full circle.

His career efforts have been highlighted in a growing number of books. The following are just a few of the books in which he has been featured:

Eames Design; Marilyn and John Neuhart and Ray Eames, 1989 The Story of Eames Furniture ; Marilyn and John Neuhart, 2010 Eero Saarinen, Furniture for Everyman; Brian Lutz, 2012 The Eames Lounge Chair: An Icon of Modern Design; Martin Eidelberg, Thomas Hine, Pat Kirkham, David A. Hanks, C. Ford Peatross, 2006 The Story of the DePree House, Designed by Charles Eames; Max DePree, 2012 Charles and Ray Eames, Designers of the Twentieth Century; Pat Kirkham, 1995 Knoll Design; Eric Larrabee and Massimo Vignelli, 1981

Hi. Thank you for contributing, but this isn't the place to create an article, and Wikipedia has a lot of requirements before an article is acceptable; it also has its own way of formatting information, called Wiki markup, that must be used. I can see that you have put some effort into writing an article, but Wikipedia requires everything in an article that isn't common knowledge to be referenced to reliable sources. Please start by reading WP:Your first article, and follow the advice there. And judging by your user name, you also need to read about our policy on conflict of interest. Sorry. --ColinFine (talk) 21:46, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is it possible to automatically show a table which is by default collapsed upon clicking on a reference linking back to the hidden text? For example, in the article European Patent Convention, there are four notes in the "Notes" section. These four notes originate from a table which is by default collapsed. It would be nice to automatically "open" the collapsed table when clicking on the links from the "Notes" section. Thanks for any hint... --Edcolins (talk) 19:43, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am not aware of any way to do this, and is one of the limitations of using collapsible tables. It might be something to submit to Wikimedia as a feature enhancement. Tiggerjay (talk) 14:52, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Verifying permission to use uploaded images ?

I have found some images on Flickr which I want to add to the Wellsville,Ohio page. I have contacted the owners of these images via Email and I have been given permission to use them. When I upload them to Wikipedia:En how do I verify that I have permission to use them ? Thank you FDLeyda (talk) 20:27, 24 April 2013 (UTC) FDLeyda[reply]

It is not sufficient that they give permission to use them on Wikipedia: they must agree to license them under one of the copyleft licences that are acceptable to Wikipedia (which allow them to be used for any purpose as long as they are properly attributed). The details, and the procedure they should follow, are at WP:Donating copyright materials. --ColinFine (talk) 21:51, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    How do I flag?

Hi there. I was wondering how to flag an article for deletion. I came across a page called 'National anti pudge association' and it does not seem to meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability. Any advice for how to handle this sort of thing?Dignifiedrice (talk) 21:13, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There are several different procedures, depending on how likely anybody is to contest the deletion. The details are in WP:Deletion policy. There is a tool you can install called Twinkle, which makes the process much easier to initiate. --ColinFine (talk) 21:54, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any way to have a collaped section link the table of contents of an article? I've been working on alcohol laws of New Jersey, which is today's feature article, and there is a section with collapsed tables that we want to link to the table of contents. The TOC list the tables, but it's a dead link. DavidinNJ (talk) 22:09, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey David. I added {{anchors}} in between each collapse segment, using the same name as the section header collapsed below it (diff). Looks like it's linking fine now. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:23, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Humble Request

I am writing about something really concerning on your Soka Gakkai Page. Link: Soka Gakkai

The issue I want to bring up has nothing to do with the text content, but with the photo content.

Before I jump in, I just want to say I have been an SGI member since I was 16.

Under the "Object of Devotion Section" there is a photo of the Gohonzon. Only thing is, it is not looked well upon to take photos of it.

It might sound cooky, but it is a special meditation tool that is supposed to represent your life. To show it is similar to letting someone see you naked.

I would be happy to write a really detailed explanation of it want it means and draw it out with words. I am a poetry writer so painting pictures with words is not a foreign thing to me.

    Thank you.

Dear Shawnee, I feel you may understand the response above better if you know some of its background. What I am going to say is entirely my own opinion, it is not supported by Wikipedia policy, and is in no way "official".
Your request seems to me entirely reasonable. Indeed, as I cannot read Japanese, I would prefer to read a detailed description of the Gohonzon, rather than see a picture of it. However, in the past Wikipedia has received requests from Muslims, many of them less politely expressed than yours, demanding that depictions of the prophet Muhammad be removed. After much discussion, it was decided to ignore these requests. Wikipedia still has depictions of Muhammad, with the justification that "Wikipedia is not censored". The same logic is likely to be applied to your request. Maproom (talk) 13:21, 25 April 2013 (UTC) [reply]

    Hi, welcome to Wikipedia!
If you mean writing a new article on Wikipedia then of course you can – anyone can contribute to Wikipedia. However check carefully if it is already described, it's much easier for beginners to can add some contents to existing pages than to write new page from scratch.
Before you decide to make new page I would encourage you to read Wikipedia:Your first article first, to know how to write an article. Also see Wikipedia:Notability to find out if the mountain should be described here. --CiaPan (talk) 06:03, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Stupendous contradiction - deliberation is highly suspected.

    Hello,

I was just going through the WikiPedia page on Indian Mujahideen, an alleged terrorist outfit of which there are lots of contention. The way some series of incents were attributed to them and later found it to be perpetrated by somebody else rendered me to find out information about them as to whether it's a media baby.

Nevertheless, Indian Mujahideen#Suspects and arrests shows that the blasts at Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad was plotted by IM which was later proven to be otherwise. The article on WikiPedia Mecca Masjid bombing itself shows that it was perpetrated by some other outfit. Neither would I want to believe that all these came up fortuitously. There are enough reasons to believe that it's part of a larger conspiracy.

I am a Muslim who go by the books. Islam strongly denounce any sort of violence. You may be surprised to know what Qur'an suggested how to deal with blasphemers; just to go away from the discussion and get back in only once it's stopped.

    Mr. Shadow wikipedia page

The history of the Mr. Shadow page shows that it was created as a redirect to The Fifth Element and except for a few instances of vandalism never had any other content. Are you sure of the exact title of the article about the rapper? Even "minor" differences such as capital letters and punctuation would cause it to link to a different page. I just skimmed the content that you're trying to add to the article for James Fanshawe and see two glaring problems with it and then a concern. For one, it's much too promotional in tone. An encyclopedia entry should be neutral in its wording. We're not here to advertise for someone, nor to deride them, but tell a balanced account of their life and work. Second, if you're getting this directly from your company's web site, then there are copyright concerns to be dealt with. Just copying direct from the site is copyright infringement and is illegal. And lastly, editing of articles on a topic that you have a financial connection to is not advised. You have a conflict of interest. It's best to bring up concerns that you have with the article on the article's talk page. The relevant policies and guidelines are here: WP:TONE, WP:NPOV, WP:COPYVIO, and WP:COI. American Novelists

I am rather confused and offended that Wikipedia has decided that women are no longer going to be included on the "American Novelists" page—that they are being moved to a new category: American Women Novelists. As an American woman and soon-to-be-published novelist, I would consider any American-born woman who writes a novel to be, by its very definition, an American novelist. That the writer happens to be a woman is incidental.

Were there to be two categories—American Women novelists and American Men Novelists—it would be more logistically acceptable. However, this does not seem to be the case, and in this day and age, that is extraordinarily sexist. As a donor to Wikipedia, I expect more from this site. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lbndonahue (talkcontribs) 12:02, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Please check Evelyn Mase

The biography of Nelson Mandela's first wife, Evelyn Mase, seems to me to be written in a rather unusual style or tone. I can't quite put my finger on it but the language just seems "a bit off". I'm also not entirely convinced that she is in fact independently Notable, she is known only as Mandela's first wife and they were divorced before even he became notable. I have left a comment on the talk page of the user who removed the PROD because I believe it was done in bad form. Now that it is in AfD, we can let that process take place. I will go ahead and place my own comments on the AfD regarding this. Tiggerjay (talk) 18:39, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Actually there is nothing wrong with simply removing a PROD, no "form" is required. Removing a PROD is how an editor makes it known that they do not agree with the proposal - any objection cancels a PROD, the next step is a formal AFD discussion. • I have no problem with the latest Firefox (20.x) on Windows 7. Just a few quick ideas off the top of my head: clicking on "edit" for that page shows a mathematical formula description language that may well be W3C MathML. Quite probably the browser uses symbol fonts to display symbols like the integral symbol. The problem could be that (1) you are using an old version of Firefox that does not support MathML so well, (2) the symbol font in your computer is missing or damaged, or (3) you have changed the default font settings in the browser. Does that help? LittleBen (talk) 17:28, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Another possibility: Windows has (or had) a setting which, if enabled, makes characters in some fonts look blurred or out of focus. Maproom (talk) 19:43, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What you say would make sense if *all* the formulas were fuzzy. But there is one that isn't fuzzy. The same integral sign that is fuzzy in the formula above is clear and crisp in the one that displays. I would agree that it was a missing font, or some incorrect setting in the browser, if every formula was the same. The windows suggestion probably doesn't apply since I'm using linux, and the Firefox is 20, so also probably not the issue. I'll keep looking. Thanks for trying to help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.124.101.38 (talk) 21:16, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

(Windows has ClearType, and the Mac has something similar). But maybe the problem is that you don't have the usual scalable symbol fonts that Firefox is looking for, and so Firefox is scaling up a bitmap font. You could do a Google site: search of the Mozilla Help forums, I found very useful information about how to recover a Windows 7 shadow copy backup of the Firefox session file (that stores the database of tabs and tab groups) there. LittleBen (talk) 03:12, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This resolved the problem. When I filter firefox in about:config for mathfont, it has a string of fonts that it can use. I have most of those installed, in particular stix and asana math. Just in case, I downloaded the mathML font zip from mozilla, and installed it according to their instructions. Firefox still doesn't display formulas properly. I fired up the midori browser, and it works perfectly. As does the Seamonkey browser. So, this is strictly a configuration issue in Firefox on my system alone, since I seem to be the only one having this problem. Daunting, since firefox is almost as complex as emacs. :-) But it's clear that it isn't a problem of Wikipedia. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.124.101.38 (talk) 08:35, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In pracically all cases the videos would be copyright violations, a serious offence in the United States where the Wikimedia Foundation is a registered non-profit company. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 17:44, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We do, however, very strongly encourage people to create their own videos (for instance, of a notable park or a traditional dance) and upload them to the Wikimedia Commons. Students at Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin have made something of a specialty of this, and their videos are in use globally throughout Wikimedia projects. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:20, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    jewish actors

how did you leave out KIRK & MICHAEL DOUGLAS?? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.228.231.231 (talk) 19:28, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia has articles on Kirk Douglas and Michael Douglas, both actors. Are these the men you mean? Maproom (talk) 19:40, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I believe the OP is referring to Category:Jewish actors which does not list either Douglas. OP, in order for someone to be listed in many of the categories related to religion, they must self identify as being part of that religion. In the case of Michael, his article states, "Douglas... has declared no religious affiliation". And Kirk is listed in Category:Jewish American actors which is categorized under the parent category of Jewish actors. We don't list items in the parent category if they are in a sub-category already. Dismas|(talk) 19:56, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Jewish can refer either to ethnicity or religion. Since the category is a subcategory of Category:Actors by ethnicity, then the former seems to apply here. On the other hand, it's also part of WP:Judaism, which would suggest the latter. MChesterMC (talk) 15:47, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like it. When you are putting images in to infoboxes, you only need to have the name of the file, not a full link to it. Otherwise, it will just show a link to the picture rather than the picture itself. Uhhlive (talk) 21:05, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You can't say that about all infoboxes. Let's say that you want "File:Example.jpg" to display in multiple infoboxes. Some will require you to type Example.jpg; some will require File:Example.jpg, and some will require [[File:Example.jpg|thumb|right|250px|Caption]]. As a result, when you're confident that you have the right filename, just play around with the filename; you'll probably get it right before long. Nyttend (talk) 04:25, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Threshold of WP:ORIGINALSYN: Vague dates

Regarding vagueness of dates. Let's say a source says: "In 2013, his creativity blossomed. On January 10, he published his first creation, which was two years in the making, which was only announced three months prior to its publication."

Would this be synthesis? "He began the creation in 2011. Its existence was made public in October 2012. It was published on January 10, 2013." I would not have a source that specifically stated the 2011 or the 2012 dates.

    Thanks! – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 21:36, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This is a situation where WP:CALC is applicable. Nobody's going to dispute that 2013 - 2 = 2011 or that October is three months before January. Nyttend (talk) 04:22, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
However, in this case they may dispute that the "2 years" was intended to be that accurate, especially since if it was in fact 2 years and 11 days in the making, then the project was started at the end of 2010, not in 2011. MChesterMC (talk) 15:43, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Portions of formula rendering at different sizes

Something's wrong with this userpage of mine. Even though I've added no formatting to the radicals and fractions in the 1° box (which I intend to do to decrease the expression's width), they're displaying at different sizes. And if you don't have your browser set to render as MathJax, then you get a parse error and the expression won't display at all.

Also, how can I centre the expressions in the tables? Pokajanje|Talk 01:33, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know anything about math markup nor do I know what the equation in the 1° box is supposed to be or look like. I guessed that, with such a long equation, the likely reason for the parse error is a typo. I discovered that the double backslash \\ at the end of the first frac may be causing the parse error. When I removed it the equation displayed without a parse error.
As far as I'm aware, the only way to center text in a table cell is to add css styling or <center>...</center> html tags. The css markup to center the 3° equation cell is:
    | 3 || style=text-align:center | <math>\frac{\sqrt{30} + \sqrt{10} - \sqrt{6} - \sqrt{2} - \sqrt{80 + 16\sqrt{5} - 40\sqrt{3} - 8\sqrt{15}}}{16}</math>
    and the html markup:
    | 3 || <center><math>\frac{\sqrt{30} + \sqrt{10} - \sqrt{6} - \sqrt{2} - \sqrt{80 + 16\sqrt{5} - 40\sqrt{3} - 8\sqrt{15}}}{16}</math></center>

How should I go about sending this through?

    Tammy Shephard (talk) 10:07, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What you have done is the correct way to go about it. The advice you recieved is a standard "boilerplate" text which is more relevant for completely new articles, not for changes to already existing articles, so don't worry about it. Please note that it is an encyclopedia article, not a company profile. The text would most likely be rearranged and modified to fit Wikipedia's standards. Thank you for providing references - although many originate from the company itself and should be used with caution - you have included a number of good ones from mainstream business news sources. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 10:30, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'd like to add more specifically that the timeline could maybe incorporated into the history section, and only include the most significant events, not significant as deemed by the company employees, but significant to the general public. And for the article in general, it would be great to include less jargon such as "collateralised exchange-traded currency securities" without explaining what it is, or linking to an existing Wikipedia article which explains what it is. Kinkreet~♥moshi moshi♥~ 12:15, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Lifetime of talk page contents / cleanup of talk pages

    on the page

    Talk:Jenna_Marbles

What is the lifetime of comments? Some comments are ill constructed and were obviously written in haste. I think it is silly to have most negative comments preserved in their uneducated form while positive comments are usually written by people who sound educated and thoughtful.

Look at the atrocious spelling error in the beginning sentences of the paragraph below, the person sounds like a total tool. This subtracts from the credibility of anybody contributing on the same page who agrees with the negative argument, due to association with the less cultured people. I tried to correct the spelling error below, and was immediately reverted.
