The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, also known as IIM Ahmedabad or simply IIMA, is a public business school located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. It was the second Indian Institute of Management (IIM) to be established, after IIM Calcutta[9] and is consistently ranked as one of the best business schools in India and in the Asia-Pacific region.[10][11][12]

Established as an autonomous body in 1961, the institute offers Post Graduate Diploma Programme in Management and Agri-Business Management, a Doctoral (Fellowship) Programme and a number of Executive Training Programmes.[13] Research and Consultancy Services to industry form an integral part of the academic structure at IIM Ahmedabad, with several projects commissioned and funded by national and international organisations such as the Ford Foundation, UNO, World Bank, NCERT, Planning Commission, Central and State ministries etc.[14][15]

History

Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the founding director of IIM Ahmedabad

The Indian Institutes of Management were established in response to the growing need that was felt for nurturing professional managers who could efficiently manage India’s growing industries. They were established with the objectives of providing high quality management education and assisting the industry through research and consulting services.[16]

IIM Ahmedabad was the second IIM to be set up in the country. It was established on 16 December 1961 as an autonomous body with the active collaboration of the Government of India, the Government of Gujarat and the industry. Eminent physicist Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, a native of Ahmedabad, played a pivotal role in setting up the Institute.[17] Later on he went on to serve as the Institute’s Honorary Director for the first 3 years of its existence.[18] Prominent management educator Ravi J. Matthai and several other Ahmedabad-based industrialists also played a major role in its creation.[19]

The Institute was established in collaboration with Harvard Business School. This collaboration greatly influenced IIMA’s approach to education, as the Institute took up the case method of pedagogy which was pioneered by Harvard Business School.[20]

Academics

Similar to the other IIMs, IIM Ahmedabad currently offers diplomas in management and not degrees.[21] It offers the following full-time academic programmes:[13]

Post Graduate Program in Management

The Post-Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) is a two year, full-time residential programme. It is the flagship programme of IIM Ahmedabad, known for the depth and rigour in its pedagogy and is considered as the toughest MBA programme in the world to get admission into.[22] The first year comprises a core programme consisting of compulsory courses on the basics of every discipline in management aimed at developing a common foundation in management theory. The second year of the course consists of electives designed to cater to students' interest and to develop proficiency in the area of their choice. The coursework also requires the completion of an internship between the two years lasting for a total of eight to nine weeks.[23]

Post-Graduate Programme in Agribusiness Management

The Post-Graduate Programme in Agribusiness Management (PGP-ABM) is a two-year fully residential management programme. As India is largely an agricultural economy, with agriculture contributing nearly 13.9% of the GDP,[24] this programme has been designed specifically to cater to the requirement of management professionals in that sector. The first year of the programme is similar to PGPM, consisting of compulsory courses in a wide range of management theory and business practices. In the second year the students specialise in developing special skills required by managers in the agribusiness sector and its sub-sectors like emerging food, retail, microfinance and global supply chain. They are also allowed to take electives, giving them the opportunity to pursue areas of special interest to them.[25]

Post-Graduate Programme in Management for Executives

The Post-Graduate Programme in Management for Executives (PGPX) is a one-year full-time residential programme for executives who have substantial[note 1] work experience in the corporate domain. To gain admission into the programme it is necessary that the candidate should have a bachelor's or equivalent degree in any discipline and should have completed 27 years of age at the start of the programme. The course consists of five terms varying between 9 to 12 weeks in duration. The programme has a general management focus, with emphasis on cross-cultural and international exposure. One of the term consists of an international immersion programme where the students undergo two intensive weeks of academics at a foreign locale.[27]

IIM Ahmedabad offers a host of full-time & part-time programmes and short-term courses for professionals

Fellow Programme in Management

The Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) is the doctoral programme of Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. Being a research programme, the student becomes part of one of the ten functional/sectoral groups in the institute and acquires the basic theoretical knowledge and practical aspects of the area.[28] Students generally spend close to five years in the programme, with the first year being immersed in rigorous course work designed to imbibe knowledge and concepts in a wide array of management theory and education. In the second year, the students are expected to take courses in the field of their specialisation. The next two years are meant for doctoral dissertation, providing the students the opportunity to make original contributions to an area of management or one of its source disciplines.[29]

Post-Graduate Programme in Public Management and Policy

The Post-Graduate Programme in Public Management and Policy (PGP-PMP) is a full-time residential programme in public management and policy focusing on governance and policy formulation and implementation, infrastructure development, and public enterprise management. It is a rigorous programme meant for civil servants, managers of government, public enterprises, NGOs and executives of private sector firms engaged in public management.[30] The course is divided into four modules, each module focusing on different facets of public policies adding up to 800 hours of contact classes. The course also includes an international attachment module designed to provide exposure to public policies implemented in a different country.[31]

Faculty Development Programme

The Faculty Development Programme (FDP) is a four-month, residential programme, started to cater to the faculty members of management education and training institutes. Since the first FDP offered in 1979, the course has been continuously modified and re-structured to include new methodologies in management training.[32] The programme consists of discipline-based courses in Strategy Formulation and Implementation, Legal Environment, Information Technology for Management, Economic Environment & Policy, Management Accounting, Financial Management and Marketing all of them packaged into a 15 weeks period.[33]

Armed-forces Programme
