Congratulations to our 225 new members |
The newsletter is back! Many things have gone on during the past few months, but many things have not. While the assessment drive helped revitalize the assessment department of the project, many other departments have received no attention. Most notably: peer review and our "workgroups". A day long IRC meeting has been planned for October 13th, with the major focus being which areas of the project are "dead", what should our goals be as a project, and how to "revive" the dead areas of our project. Contribute to the discussion on the the new channel (see below) We decided to deliver this newsletter to all project members this month but only those with their names down here will get it delivered in the future. This is your newsletter and you can be involved in the creation of the next issue. Any and all contributions are welcome. Simply let yourself be known to any of the undersigned or post news on the next issue's talk page

Lightning Talks at the NYC Meetup
I started on the NYC Meetup page by clicking on your user page, with {{User wikipedia/Uncat}} mentioning the Uncat task force. That seemed interesting to me, so I tried Wikipedia:WikiProject Categories/uncategorized and then, randomly chose Paul Schattel. I added two categories using Wikipedia:HOTCAT, and I placed three appropriate templates on the talk page. That was easy enough, so I would encourage you to consider doing a lightning talk at the NYC Meetup on the Uncat task force. I did one last year on the Article Rescue Squadron on the spur of the moment. CC or PD Licensing Images from Yale Center for British Art
I'm requesting peer review on a decision I made for licensing images from the Yale Center for British Art. I chose to use Creative Commons (CC), but I'm wondering if it would be permissible to use the Public Domain (PD) instead. When I read statement from Yale on unrestricted rights, it mentions both being in the public domain and under a CC license. Any words of advice before I continue to upload more images from this large (100,000+) collection? Thanks DutchTreat (talk) 09:49, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

- When I click on the source links now (i.e. this one, for example, it says "Public Domain" right under the thumbnail. The Yale link you supplied above states that they are releasing things under the CC-0 license (essentially PD on steroids), so I would release everything under that template. Seeking Diagram Sketch from Wikimania 2012 Grand Ballroom
At Wikimania 2012, I witnessed a a hand drawn diagram on a table at the back of the grand ballroom. I believe it was the work of several hands in a burst of creative, problem solving. I'm seeking more information on the substance and conclusions resulting from this great expression of the spirit of the Wikipedia movement. - Hi Dutch, I spoke to the guy who did it. It was just one guy and he started by doodling during the GLAM talks. As the talks went on, he just continued. I have a bad pic of it, but on Flickr there are several nice pics (none of course were able to capture the entire sketch). BACKLOG OF THE WEEK Category:Pages with broken reference names
Hello - some editors fight off the vandal hordes, as I do repairing pages with citation errors. If I didn't - there would be a large backlog in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting and in Category:Pages with missing references list as in Category:Pages with broken reference names (more than 1500 yesterday). But it is impossible to work it alone. Do you know how to do a "Blitz" (excuse the comparision) to find willing editors to work on it. It is much more easier to repair references if you do it one hour, one day or one week ago after the errors were made instead of months and years after the error was done. Very, very difficult to find these errors.
Only with WikiBlame Search it is possible to find and repair such errors.

Hello, I would like to add a picture of Howler the Coyote, the mascot for the Arizona Coyotes. The image was posted via twitter tweet from multiple sources (Arizona Coyotes, USA Hockey, as well as many twitter users) and was posted to FaceBook by multiple sources (Arizona Coyotes, USA Hockey, as well as multiple FaceBook users). I believe considering the wide proliferation of the image it must be fair use. This would be the first image i have sought to be added to Wikipedia, and would like to follow the guidelines and make sure i am uploading and adding this to Howlers information correctly. I would also like to create an separate Wikipedia entry (page) for Howler, to provide a page for those interested in learning about Howler to locate in a search, separate from the List of NHL mascots entry.

 You are invited to join us for a full Saturday (drop-in any time!) of social Wikipedia editing at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) for our upcoming "WikiArte" Latin America Edit-a-thon, for Wiki Arte y Cultura Latinoamericana, a communal day of creating, updating, improving, and translating Wikipedia articles about Latin American art and culture.
All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. We will provide training sessions and resources for beginner Wikipedians, WiFi, reference materials, and suggested topics, as well as childcare and refreshments. Please bring your laptop, power cord, and ideas for articles that need to be updated, translated, or created.
