Huntington Beach Independent
Ingersoll Publications, which owned the Orange Coast Daily Pilot, bought the paper from Knight Ridder in 1985. Adams Communications bought the Pilot in 1988, but sold it to Page Group Publishing the next year. Page also acquired the Glendale News Press.
In late summer 2016, the Los Angeles Times folded the newspaper's staff in with the Costa Mesa-Newport Beach-focused Daily Pilot. While the Daily Pilot retains a reference to the Huntington Beach Independent on its masthead, this move ended its existence as an independent newspaper.
The Independent was founded in 1964 by the Ridder chain to serve the expanding areas of Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley as part of the West Orange Publishing Group. It briefly was published as a daily in the late Sixties, then as a twice-weekly paper through the end of 1982 when it went to once-a-week publication.
