Category question

John Mark Ockerbloom article

Hi again, LadyofShalott. I'm finished with the John Mark Ockerbloom article for today. I'm going to spend one or two more days on it. I suspect you already know, but just in case... I found the article from the recent edition of the Signpost (see Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2013-03-18/Interview#A new platform). I've been trying to help John work his way around Wikipedia. Anyhoo, I see you have a number of DYKs under your belt. I do some DYK-like work myself such as Our Mr. Sun (before and after), but I don't have any interest in getting a DYK or going through the process. Since you are also working on the article I figured I should encourage you to submit it, that is if you want to. Please feel free to rewrite anything I've added. I don't have any ownership issues, although I do prefer the WP:LDR format for references. I should also mention the first 4 references that were already in the article are all non-RS and should be removed. I just can't bring myself to remove stuff from articles unless they are BLP vios or copyvios. I'll use the {{inuse}} tag tommorrow when I work on the article, so we don't get edit conflicts. Hey Aleta, Just wondering.. who decides to delete articles? Must it be an Admin.? Well, whatever the case may be, I keep running into articles with maybe two or three sentences total, and no references. Can you help, or do you know someone to whom I can send the article names who can make those decisions? Here's an example: Indivised. Did you ever guess that I was/am computer challenged and without your kindness and attention, I never would have lasted? :) Thus far, I've only gone to Admins. to delete or help fix articles which are merely promotional vehicles and so their WP:NPOV goes right out the window! I removed the Star of David against a couple of names in your post on Drmies' page, in the quotation of some choice bits from a certain online encyclopedia the name of which I don't like to mention unnecessarily (WP:IGNORE). Perhaps I shouldn't have; the stars contain a certain amount of information, in that they tell you much about the style of that site; but, well, one can tell anyway, and I just didn't like to look at them. Hi Bishonen, Those came from copying and pasting the quotes directly, along with the fact that they didn't actually display on the computer I was using at the time (so I didn't realize that's what the boxes I was seeing were supposed to be). Hello! You did a very good job at turning down the overpromotional tone of the AKB48 article. It was nice how you changed a word or two here and there and the whole sentence became more neutral and more more serious in tone. Could you please do the same with Momoiro Clover Z? I am having problems at Template:Did you know nominations/Momoiro Clover Z, where I was asked to "curb" the sentences that sound promotional, but it is too difficult for me to do it myself. I changed or just deleted most of it, but then there was some info that I didn't want to be deleted and it was too hard for me to rephrase it. By the way, I had to change the words "the group announced" back to "it was announced". I don't know much to tell the complete story, though. The Wikipedia Library now offering accounts from Cochrane Collaboration (sign up!)

Cochrane Collaboration is an independent medical nonprofit organization consisting of over 28,000 volunteers in more than 100 countries. The collaboration was formed to organize medical scholarship in a systematic way in the interests of evidence-based research: the group conducts systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials of health-care interventions, which it then publishes in the Cochrane Library.

Cochrane has generously agreed to give free, full-access accounts to 100 medical editors. Individual access would otherwise cost between $300 and $800 per account. Thank you Cochrane!

Request for input in drafting potential guidelines

Hi. There are, at present, no particular clear guidelines for religious material here, or, for that matter, guidelines for how to deal with ideas in general, particularly those ideas which might be accepted as true by individuals of a given religious, political, or scientific stance. There have been attempts in the past to draft such guidelines, but they have quickly been derailed. I am dropping this note on the talk pages of a number of editors who I believe have some interest in these topics, or have shown some ability and interest in helping to develop broad topic areas, such as yourself, and asking them to review the material at User:John Carter/Guidelines discussion and perhaps take part in an effort to decide what should be covered in such guidelines, should they be determined useful, and what phrasing should be used. I also raise a few questions about broader possible changes in some things here, which you might have some more clear interest in. I would be honored to have your input. Solid State PLC

It needs to be the other way around: move it to mainspace first, and then we can add the logo. The reason for that is that non-free images, such as logos, can only be used in mainspace, not userspace or anywhere else. Do you need help moving it to mainspace, or only the logo addition? Bibliography articles and copyright

I stumbled across the WikiProject Bibliographies page (where I found your name) a while back and thought I could contribute a few bibliographies of notable but not particularly well-known authors. My first substantial effort, a bibliography of Edmund Beckett, 1st Baron Grimthorpe is about as complete as I can make it and will be ready for mainspace after a bit more polishing. The article is based on Ferriday's biography but much of the information has never been collated in one place before; as best I can tell there are no copyright issues.

Here's a harder case: I'd like to write a bibliography on bibliographies, starting with G. Thomas Tanselle's book-length syllabus "Introduction to Bibliography". There's enough information here for a dozen articles, but I would be copying large swaths of text; there's just not too many creative ways to make lists of citations.

Obviously I'd cite Tanselle and ideally I'd be adding (and perhaps omitting) a few other books based on other sources. Despite this I'm concerned that there's not enough of a difference to avoid questions of copyright infringement.

Any guidance? How can we use scholarly bibliographies to write bibliography articles, and how can we avoid WP:OR if we don't use them?

After a bit of googling, I found Adelman v. Christy, which says in part:

Adelman's Bibliography appears to be the printout of a computer research query or database, arranged in chronological order. See Pl.'s Statement of Facts Ex. D. Although Adelman may have invested time and money in compiling this list, the Bibliography is only subject to minimal protection under copyright law. "[T]he copyright in a factual compilation is thin. Notwithstanding a valid copyright, a subsequent compiler remains free to use the facts contained in another's publication to aid in preparing a competing work, so long as the competing work does not feature the same selection and arrangement." Feist, 499 U.S. at 349, 111 S.Ct. 1282.

I'm going to read that as a combination of Tanselle's bibliography with others is sufficiently novel to not infringe Tanselle's copyright. If you think a stricter interpretation is warranted, please let me know. Lesser Cartographies (talk) 20:00, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

• I seem to recall that lists require some creative input to be copyrightable. Something like List of songs recorded by Chrisye or list of works by Amir Hamzah, if complete, would not be copyrightable in and of its own. However, something like Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time would certainly be copyrightable as selection had creative input. For a bibliography of reading material related to a subject (as opposed to a bibliography of works produced by a subject) I'd expect there to be some creativity involved, as different works are included and excluded based on the compiler's reasoning (a form of creative input). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:44, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

• While IANAL (and cannot give you legal advice), I believe that using elements of Tanselle's select bibliography in combination with others may be sufficient to avoid infringement, as long as you are careful not to simply pay lip service to combining bibliographies. :) To avoid substantial similarity, I would really recommend blending liberally so that in the end you actually do create something novel. For an off-the-cuff example, if you created a list of "50 most important books of the 20th century", and it deviated by one or two entries from Time Magazine's list of "50 most important books of the 20th century", they'd have a stronger change to demonstrate infringement. Likewise, if Tanselle were able to demonstrate that you have reproduced his list (and his criteria for selection) with an insignificant amount of variation, there could be more of an issue. In essence, I am agreeing with Crisco - a select bibliography of this sort is likely to be creative. I don't think it's impossible to use it in creating a new list (or lists), but I think it will require great care. --Moonriddengirl ^(talk) 23:58, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

Purpose and pain and penguins

Hi Lady. I was saddened and disturbed to see this, which they undid with their next edit. I was concerned, until I saw that a few minutes later they seemed to be okay, enthusiastically praising penguins. In general, do you think anything should be done when encountering an edit such as that first one? If someone feels that way, I would like to think that some encouragement might help, but it's also quite possible that bringing it up could make things worse. Oh, wow, Mandarax. I don't know. It sounds at least borderline suicidal, but they are not threatening imminent self-harm (in which case, there are channels for contacting local officials). There's no way to know if they are really feeling that way, or are just trolling. I honestly don't know what the best thing to do is. Anyone else want to chime in with thoughts? I've left them some cookies - I also considered the "welcome but your edits were not helpful" template, but in the circumstances it seemed unwise. Just to ramble on a bit, the IP is in the UK, and today is a school day for most some secondary schools there, so posting unhappy edits on an early secondary syllabus related topic just before 6pm local time may indicate that the editor was doing homework and grew sufficiently bored to try out the "anyone can edit" thing. Which is slightly intentional I suppose. It's not quite trolling as such (by my definition), since it's entirely possible they had no expectation anyone would ever see the edit or react to it. The more I thought about it, the more I felt that the comment, although crudely constructed, was a bit poetic. I looked around, and I suspect it may have been derived from the Bright Eyes song "Waste Of Paint": "I have a friend, he's mostly made of pain ... I am a waste of breath, of space, of time". Most Wikipedians are volunteers, the "benefit" is psychological. You get a feeling of importance and can exercise control, a fundamental human drive which can be hard to satisfy in modern society. I don't know your background, but all I see on your userpage is a bunch of Wikipedia bullshit. If Wikipedia were run correctly, according to established scholarly norms, you and I would both be invited to contribute to and sign articles, under our real names, in our respective areas of expertise. That is, work not play, with direct personal responsibility for outcomes. Sure, I'll grant that I get personal satisfaction out of the work I do on Wikipedia. You said, though, "at Wikipedia readers' expense". That is what you failed to answer. How is anything I have done at the "expense" of our readers? In working to improve the content of Wikipedia, I (and many others, of course) make something that is to the benefit of the readers, not their expense. Wikipedia is not a game to me; I merely said that the people making a training game should have the chance to see it it will be a useful tool for teaching new editors. Went/Gone Under

On the WBSC (AM) page, I used the way it was quoted in the reference. The former employee was quoted as saying the station had "went under". In the direct quote, the foremer employee says that the "station went under", using the simple past. You rephrased it to use the past participle, which is gone, not went. Shouldn't there have been discussion before this name change? Are you happy with it? The editor changing it did the change on the basis that it is an academic name, but I can't find any sources for it. I would have moved it back if you hadn't edited it. It is correctly tagged as "redirect-class". That is different from whatever class assessment (start- B-, whatever) the actual article has. They are separate (but related) items that should both be tagged with the distinct assessments appropriate to them. LadyofShalott 21:25, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia, including its back-end, is a work in progress. Just because nobody has gotten around to tagging those many other redirects is no reason to undo the work that has been done to tag this and others. Merging articles

Dear LadyofShalott, I have just finished to improve the article of Buddhism in Africa. Although Buddhism is a world's religion but it's very tiny in Africa, not so much information to create separate articles for each country. Can you please help me to merging them, I don't know how to make it. There were someone merged some articles before such as Buddhism in Central Asia, Buddhism in Central America or Buddhism in the Middle East. Thank you so much. Hey Lady, there's great interest these days in textiles (clothes, etc) and their cultural meaning. This article is an example of it. Can you find an appropriate category, maybe? Hmmm... for now I've just stuck it in Category:Textile arts, which isn't ideal. If there are other articles that would fit, I could create something along the lines of Category:Cultural depictions of textile arts. I'll have to work on that and the see also possibilities. Tony Ortega BLP

Hello LadyofShalott. I'm a noob editor up here and I noticed you recently made a minor edit to the Tony Ortega article that I had spent several weeks drafting offline, and then finalized on my user sandbox page before replacing the original stub article. But once I posted it, the majority of my work got ripped down and clobbered almost immediately for reasons I don't quite understand. Although I don't dispute that there was room for improvement and cleanup in the work I did, the edits that were done after the last version under my username seemingly left the article in a sorry state that you attempted to improve upon. So I was wondering if you would be so kind as to revisit the article when you have a chance, take a look at the version history and see if there is any legitimate reversals that can be done for the sections that have been completely removed? Actually, glancing over what was cut, I generally agree. I admit that I did not read all of it because there was way too much and sounded very promotional. Thank you for taking a look and my apologies for being a noob up here. It was not my intention to write a promotional article and I appreciate this opportunity to learn what I did wrong. Despite the other editor's accusation that I must have a personal connection to the subject, I have never actually met him. I am merely a newsjunky who has been fond of the various Voice Media Group altweekly newspapers ever since the Phoenix New Times staff went to jail over the Joe Arpaio coverage that this subject also worked on and won awards for. Thus, my knowledge of his career runs deep and stems from being an avid reader of the outlets he has worked for over the years as well as his current freelance blog.

The one section that has been completely removed that I struggled with the most was the "Recognition" heading. I tried to mirror what was done under that same heading (or similar alternatives such as "Awards," "Awards and recognition" or "Awards and honors") on many other journalist/editor articles. I even attempted to go the extra mile and use two sources on the awards list I posted for the sake of having secondaries where the norm seems to be only citing the primary source for the organization granting the award. Some of the articles I followed as an example for this included John Dougherty (journalist), John Sweeney (journalist), Barbara Demick and Robert Kovacik.

I was also perplexed at the photo being removed from the infobox. I had personally gotten permission from the photographer to use it up here after tracking down the proper ownership. It has been used on several past interviews the subject has done for various outlets as well as his own social network profiles prior to the professional headshots he currently uses (which are copyrighted by the photographer and I was unable to get permission for reuse on those). I had seen another editor upload a BLP photo in the American investigative journalist category, on behalf of some other owner under a similar "permission granted for reuse" scenario, where the actual owner is not who uploaded it but was acknowledged on the file metadata. I thought I used the same licensing classification as was done elsewhere in that type of situation. However, when I uploaded the photo to Wikimedia I didn't realize my WP user login credentials would carry over there so I mistakenly registered a second user name. And lastly, the resurrected use of Reference No. 14 on the current article version from the New York Observer that quotes unnamed sources regarding the subject's resignation last year has me dumbfounded. This questionable cite and related text was included in the original stub article and is what inspired me to attempt writing a better article in the first place. I had replaced that source with one from The New York Times (Ref No 42 on my last version) covering the subject's departure from The Village Voice that quoted the executive editor of the newspaper chain and did not confirm the allegations surrounding his resignation that The Observer and other tabloid outlets ran. Even more alarming, there are now additional cites recycled from my work that have been tapped onto those unnamed staff member quotes (Refs No 15 & 16) that do not support those claims and have nothing to do with the content under the "Criticism of Scientology" section. So it looks as if the other editor is trying to ensure the questionable tabloid fodder that was quoted in the current version (and was the basis of original stub article with only the Observer cited) would look more legitimate than it actually is. Unitarianism

Hi Aleta. Someone recently changed the title of "Unitarianism" to "Christian Unitarianism." We've had endless talks about this in the past and decided that "Unitarianism" is best, as it is the name that is most frequently used to refer to the subject in English-language reliable sources. The article title has been stable for a long time. The person changed it without reaching any consensus first.
