Revision as of 10:37, 24 October 2010

Welcome—request protection of a page, file, or template here.

Before requesting, read the protection policy. Full protection is used to stop edit warring between multiple users or to prevent vandalism to high-risk templates; semi-protection and pending changes are usually used to prevent IP and new user vandalism (see the rough guide to semi-protection); and move protection is used to stop pagemove revert wars. Extended confirmed protection is used where semi-protection has proved insufficient (see the rough guide to extended confirmed protection)

After a page has been protected, it is listed in the page history and logs with a short rationale, and the article is listed on Special:Protectedpages. In the case of full protection due to edit warring, admins should not revert to specific versions of the page, except to get rid of obvious vandalism.

Request protection of a page, or increasing the protection level

Request unprotection of a page, or reducing the protection level

Request a specific edit to a protected page
Please request an edit directly on the protected page's talk page before posting here

Place requests for new or upgrading of article protection, upload protection, or create protection at the BOTTOM of this section. Check the archive of fulfilled and denied requests or, failing that, the page history if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

    Current requests for protection

Requesting Semi-Protection for 3 months for Actress Wikipedia:Susan Hannaford (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) High Media Coverage over upcoming weeks. High level IP vandalism. May require permanent semi protection at later date due to endemic/endless vandalism.

Declined, You won't like this, but article deleted as a copyright violation. Courcelles 10:24, 24 October 2010 (UTC) - WHAT COPYRIGHT VIOLATION? BE SPECIFIC?. Making a false claim of copyright infringement is a serious offence. You wont like this, but I have your IP address and intend on suing.[reply]

Requesting move protection for a week, maybe two (advice welcome). This kicked off at RFD, with a number of very new editors all requesting the move of Muhajir (Caucasus) to Circassian Genocide. The article had been long-term stable before this, but with many redirects under a variety of partisan names. For the last few days there has been no opposing view (no discussion to be honest, as there were no opposing editors visible) and the article did move to Genocide and deportation of Circassians. Although "Genocide" is an obviously emotive term, it doesn't seem unreasonable here and is used directly as a title by at least one Reuters ref. "Muhajir" is apparently a pejorative term, which the editors at RFD took some offence too (It implies that they left voluntarily, and also that they're Arabs or Muslims who would have been delighted to go elsewhere anyway). I tried to start discussion at Talk:Deportation_of_Circassians#Rename_to_Circassian_Genocide, but editors have so far tended to act first.

Today the move warring started. A Russian editor (with a huge number of WP edits and a long history at this article) moved it back to Muhajirism (Caucasus) (different spelling, so that's yet more redirects to manage), then one of the original "pro-Circassian" editors moved it rapidly to Deportation of Circassians (eight redirects now). Clearly there's another Balkan / Armenian issue brewing, and that's a bad thing for WP.

Personally I'm just an experienced editor who bumped into an article on a topic I know nothing of, where new editors were clearly having problems. I cannot claim to understand the virtues of either naming, but I can see justification for using "Genocide", reason to regard "Muhajir" as defamatory, and I'm not surprised at all that an editor with a Russian background takes a quite opposite view of this. It will undoubtedly become messy, once the meatsocks are on the march. Andy Dingley (talk) 09:24, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Move protected. I've added move protection but it should probably be moved back to the title it was at before the current dispute began. I'll take a closer look in case that would cause even more confusion. SlimVirgin talk|contribs 10:03, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think the original title would be a bad idea, and the complaints against had justification. I would hope to try and achieve some sort of consensus on the talk page before finalising the name, but that depends on the behaviour of other editors. To see an editor with >165,000 edits provoking an undiscussed move war isn't a hopeful sign. Andy Dingley (talk) 10:08, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protect. High level of IP vandalism and major BLP concerns. TM 05:54, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protected for a period of 2 weeks, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. Courcelles 06:02, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protection. Her biography should be protected. There has been a history of repeated vandalism, insertion of false claims of Chinese ethnicity (among other inappropriate slurs), and revert wars since January 3, 2008. Almost all of the twelve sources listed state that her mother came from Vietnam. As referenced in the NY Mag source, her father, who is American of Irish and Polish descent, met her mother when he was stationed in Vietnam during the war; she is not of Chinese descent, and just because she made Hong Kong films or etc. does not mean she is a Hong Kong actress or a Chinese actress and etc. Thanks, Pop goes the weasel (talk) 05:49, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Declined for now. What you're describing sounds like content disputes. Can you supply some recent diffs showing vandalism? SlimVirgin talk|contribs 08:29, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Indefinite move-protection No reason to be moved without a good reason. Removed a month ago. TbhotchTalk C. 04:08, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Move protected. Yup, it was removed unintentionally by Ged UK (talk · contribs · blocks · protections · deletions · page moves · rights · RfA) when he used TW, which has a glitch. Airplaneman 04:47, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    create-protection, Repeatedly recreated. Momo san Talk 04:00, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection vandalism, Heavy IP vandalism lately as album has been announced and released. Gross edits such as this one make me want to ask to have this protected for eternity. EnDaLeCoMpLeX (contributions) • (let's chat) 03:36, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protection. Article needs to be protected due to continuous edit war. The long dispute is about the language in the lead (Montenegrin or Serbian). Kebeta (talk) 11:39, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Declined for now as it seems to have settled down. Feel free to ask again if it resumes. SlimVirgin talk|contribs 08:32, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Current requests for unprotection

Before posting, first discuss with the protecting admin on their talk page. Post below only if you receive no reply.

    • To find out the username of the admin who protected the page, click on "history" at the top of the page, then click on "View logs for this page," which is under the title of the page. The protecting admin is the username in blue before the words "protected", "changed protection level" or "pending changes". If there are a number of entries on the log page, you might find it easier to select "Protection log" or "Pending changes log" from the dropdown menu in the blue box.
    • Requests to downgrade full protection to template protection on templates and modules can be directed straight here; you do not need to ask the protecting admin first.
    • Requests for removing create protection on redlinked articles are generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand.
    • If you want to make spelling corrections or add uncontroversial information to a protected page, please add {{Edit fully-protected}} to the article's talk page, along with an explanation of what you want to add to the page. If the talk page is protected, please use the section below.

Check the archives if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

Unprotect. Protected due to "Excessive vandalism". No evidence of vandalism on the page. The protection was 10 days after the last edit, also. 82.152.216.15 (talk) 08:09, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Unprotected SlimVirgin talk|contribs 08:25, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Current requests for edits to a protected page

Ideally, requests should be made on the article talk page rather than here.

    • Unless the talk page itself is protected, you may instead add the appropriate template among {{Edit protected}}, {{Edit template-protected}}, {{Edit extended-protected}}, or {{Edit semi-protected}} to the article's talk page if you would like to make a change rather than requesting it here. Doing so will automatically place the page in the appropriate category for the request to be reviewed.
    • Where requests are made due to the editor having a conflict of interest (COI; see Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance), the {{Edit COI}} template should be used.
    • Requests to move move-protected pages should be made at Wikipedia:Requested moves, not here.
    • If the discussion page and the article are both protected preventing you from making an edit request, this page is the right place to make that request. Please see the top of this page for instructions on how to post requests.
    • This page is not for continuing or starting discussions regarding content should both an article and its discussion page be protected. Please make a request only if you have a specific edit you wish to make.

    Fulfilled/denied requests

Temporary full protection dispute, We have a bit of a situation going on here and I think a Few hours of Full Protection would do some good for the guys arguing over some minor detail. Just a few hours though not a few days because this PPV event is tomorrow and none of our Project members are Admins that I know of. Nascarking 23:39, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protection. The article has a long history of IP vandals changing Kurt Cobain's referenced official cause of death, from suicide to murder. This is inaccurate, and it also potentially defames a certain living person. Mudwater (Talk) 22:45, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection, Continued removal of maintenance template from various unregistered users without a valid reason. Λeternus (talk) 22:17, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Declined If you want an ugly template at the top of the article, you're going to have to defend it. Consider putting a section on the talk page rather than disfiguring the article. Looie496 (talk) 22:33, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: That's one of the worst reasons I've ever heard for anything (not to mention it's extremely subjective). The template has existed for years; you're saying it shouldn't be used and the page shouldn't be protected because you personally think it's ugly? Some guy (talk) 23:34, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. A short lead is no excuse for disfiguring an article. An editor who thinks the lead is too short can always expand it. Looie496 (talk) 03:23, 24 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Temporary semi-protection - High level of IP vandalism possibly due to its WP:RECENTISM. Candyo32 22:13, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Declined – Not enough recent disruptive activity to justify protection. There are some good IP edits mixed in with the bad ones. Semi-protected for a period of 1 month, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. Looie496 (talk) 22:23, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Indefinite semi-protection, Persistent additions of unreferenced content by one editor who at one point has claimed (see Special:Contributions/75.61.129.200) to be Ly Tong himself. Example. While at first glance it may seem to be merely badly written but referenced, on close inspection the references do not actually back up the content they are paired with, and it is likely impossible to ever find references that will. This page has been protected in the past for this reason, but only for a short time. I don't believe this is a generic content dispute because the editor wishing to insert content has refused to discuss his edits with others and the substance of the edits has not changed in all this time, and appears to be copy-pasted directly from an older version of the article (hence the poor formatting). . Semi-protected for a period of 3 months, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. Looie496 (talk) 22:20, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection, Long-running campaign from what is likely a single person on multiple IP's to insert unreferenced slanderous statements into the article, usually with an edit summary of "larry". Article has been previously protected for this reason but only for a short time. My early attempts to get him to make properly referenced edits have been ignored and so I have just moved to reverting without discussion. I don't believe this is a generic content dispute because the nature of the dispute revolves around one person wanting to put in purely negative content and refusing to discuss with others or even defend his edits. Soap 19:25, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Question: Is there any reason that the IP in question can't just be blocked? Dabomb87 (talk) 21:20, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Semi-protected for a period of 1 day, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. This IP only seems to edit once a month or so, so a block would have to be very long to have any effect. Semi-protected for 1 day to get past the current editing bout. The alternative seems to be a year or so of protection, and it isn't clear to me that we've reached that stage yet, but other admins should feel free to change this if they wish.
