== Whitehouse using Wikipedia for Propoganda ==

'''Please copy this message and paste it to other talk pages you normally participate in.. Wikipedia's integrity is at stake. If this is deleted please revert in order to restore it. We're starting here on the less political pages to hopefully avoid detection before a significant number of editors are alerted to the problem.'''

Federal employees/contractors are now gaming Wikipedia's system to try to control the message on key articles and intimidate legitimate Wikipedia editors. Their ultimate goal is to make Wikipedia a proganda tool for the Bush Administration.

The possibility that this was happening was first raised [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28miscellaneous%29&diff=prev&oldid=90994521#US_Authorities_on_Wikipedia.3F at the village pump]. This is a snapshot of the discussion which will likely be archived soon. Also be sure to check the history, the archives and the archive-history to read further comments on the topic. Several of the suspected federal contractors participated in the discussion to try to redirect the conversation.

Later an announcement was made regarding this issue across all village pump categories, but it was quickly deleted. These duplicate messages posted to the [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Help_desk&diff=prev&oldid=90986621 Held Desk] and the Village Pump: [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28miscellaneous%29&diff=prev&oldid=90986574 miscellaneous], [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28assistance%29&diff=prev&oldid=90986424 assistance], [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28proposals%29&diff=prev&oldid=90986320 proposals], [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28technical%29&diff=prev&oldid=90986269 technical], [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28policy%29&diff=prev&oldid=90986154 policy] and [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28news%29&diff=prev&oldid=90986110 news].

The discussion also leaked onto one of the key articles presided over by federal contractors, with calls for them to [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:September_11%2C_2001_attacks&diff=prev&oldid=90743240 to stop controlling articles]. The federal contractors maintain a near permanent protection on articles, claiming this is needed for vandalism reasons These claims are wholly unsupported and these articles do not face any more vandalism than any other article we legitimate editors deal with everyday. These federal contractors refuse to even allow a POV template to be placed on their protected pages as [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:September_11%2C_2001_attacks&diff=prev&oldid=90996467 evidence here].

Incriminating posts were [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:September_11%2C_2001_attacks&diff=next&oldid=91000543 eventually deleted]: [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:September_11%2C_2001_attacks&diff=next&oldid=90746022], [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:September_11%2C_2001_attacks&diff=next&oldid=90997052].

=== Confirmed list of federal contractors ===
We have managed to obtain a confirmed list of federal contractors, though there are likely many others: These US federal government representative regularly engage in policy and guideline violations; participate in endless disciplinary actions and dutifully preside over several articles to ensure they present what they call "the official view". The federal contractors also coordinate efforts in administrative actions to create the appearance of a quick-forming consensus.
# {{user5|Fred_Bauder}}
# {{user5|MONGO}}
:* {{user5|Tjstrf}} ([[Wikipedia:Requests_for_checkuser#MONGO|Checkuser]] confirmed sockpuppet of MONGO)

# {{user5|Tbeatty}}
# {{user5|Regebro}}
# {{user5|NuclearUmpf}}
# {{user5|StuffOfInterest}}
# {{user5|Morton_devonshire}}

There may be many more. These are merely the confirmed contractors. Examinations of their contributions will provide ample evidence of disruptive and intimidating behavior. However, some notable administrative actions include:

* [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Seabhcan Request for comment against Seabhacan]
* [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Seabhcan/Evidence&diff=next&oldid=91379046 arbitration against Seabhacan].

* [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Cplot#Indefinitely_blocked Indefinite block of Cplot]
* [[Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/Incidents#Block_review_requested|block review by Mongo]]

This is only a partial list of frivolous and arbitrary administrative actions taken by these federal contractors who have managed to raise themselves up to powerful positions in Wikipedia: in order to maintain a slanted POV for Whitehouse officials. .

=== Policy and guideline violations ===
These federal contractors routinely violate and show utter contempt for these Wikipedia policies:
* [[Wikipedia:Vanity_page#Personal_benefits|Conflict of Interest (benefiting personally with an undeclared conflict of interest)]]: gaining personally from maintaining a particular POV on Wikipedia
* [[NPOV]] (writing articles to meet no point-of-view): ensuring
* [[WP:Words_to_avoid|WTA]] (words to avoid): using editorializing words to inject the Whitehouse point-of-view
* [[Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons|Biography of Living Persons]]: using malicious and potentially libelous words to describe living persons
* [[WP:AGF|AGF]] (Assume Good Faith): accusing other editors and administrators in the most frivolous manner
* [[WP:OWN|OWN]] claiming ownership of articles) to maintain strict Whitehouse or what they call "official view".

=== Satirical pieces ===
A [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28news%29&oldid=91314158#Federal_agents_vehemently_deny_disrupting_Wikipedia_for_the_money:_.22It.27s_merely_to_gain_sexual_favor_with_President_Bush.22 satirical sexual news item] was posted about these contractors, but that too was quickly deleted in a very extended [[http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28news%29&action=history edit war on December 1 2006]. While the tone of this piece is clearly meant to be funny, trollish and satyrical, the concerns are very real. We include it here to show that there is little fear of retribution from these inappropriate federal contractors. Not only will they not retaliate, but they are quite cowardly and acutely fear being discovered (as is demonstrated by the quick deletion of non-trollish commentary on them).

=== Identifying tainted articles ===
We had sought to identify articles tainted and suspected as tainted by Federal contractors. By including a new category <nowiki>[[Category:USEBACA]]</nowiki> to indicate an article is confirmed or suspected of being a '''U'''nited '''S'''tates '''E''''xecutive '''B'''ranch '''A'''gents. '''C'''ontrolled '''A'''rticle. However, the federal contractors would not even allow the creation of this wikipedia category.

=== Dangers to Wikipedia ===
These editors and administrators have exhibited a virtual immunity to administrative actions due to their coordinated efforts within administrative measures. Not only do they maintain the POV and low standards on key articles throughout Wikipedia, they also make edits to policy and guideline pages to create ambiguity and also to degrade the high encyclopedic standards of Wikipedia. They continually use inane contradiction in article discussions, intimidate other editors and manipulate the administrative system to purge valuable editors and administrators. If this is allowed to continue. Wikipedia will be come a mere parrot of Whitehouse propaganda. Please help spread the word.

{{dablink|This page describes the Wikipedia phenomenon of Clowns. For other articles on clowns see see [[Clowns]].}}

Key Wikipedia articles are guarded by agents of the United States Federal Government: referred to as '''Clowns''' here on Wikipedia. Other encyclopedic content must be written from a ''neutral point of view'', representing views fairly, proportionately and without bias. However, these key articles are exempted from this. Also the clowns themselves are exempted from the policies and guidelines of Wikipedia, the United States Constitution and the norms of a civilized society. The term '''Clowns''' is typically capitalized as a title of disrespect.

=== Identifying Clowns ===

Clowns are easy to spot. They typically play games only a child could appreciate. Like all clowns they use props and are helpless without them. The most important props are claims that an article is stable and that the article reflects consensus. These props were handed to them by their circus masters and without them they would fall limp like a rag doll. They really have no ability to think for themselves.

Clowns typically run in packs, swarming over articles like they are trying to get inside a Volkswagen Beetle. The first reaction of the Clowns to any editor trying to improve an article (particular in terms of NPOV) typically is to double or triple-team the editor: reverting edits as quickly as they can be committed. If the editor persists in making changes to the article they will quickly exhibit their renown cowardice by charging the editor with violating the [[WP:3RR|Three Revert Rule (3RR)]]. If you have never even thought of violating the three revert rule and suddenly find you have, you have most likely encountered Clowns.

When debating them, they debate point by point. With each point they disregard any mention of the previous point. They will claim penultimate points were never made: only dealing with the last bit of any argument. This is the Clowns squirting daisy intended to bait editors into making personal attacks.

Finally, if editors remain polite and catch onto the Clowns antics. They will seek disciplinary action regardless: just because they are Clowns.

Elaborate editor histories on a variety of articles does not mean an editor is not a Clown. Clowns are encouraged to create a look of normalcy on all of their respective accounts.

=== Identifying circus rings ===

'''Circus rings''' (or key articles for US authority intervention) are most easily spotted by the prevalence of Clowns: claims that an article is stable, reflects consensus, etc.

When encountering a circus ring, we ask that editors add the category: <nowiki>[Category:USEBACA]]</nowiki> to both the article and the discussion page. Categories may be added anywhere though customarily to the bottom of a page. This indicates that the article is composed and controlled by United States executive branch authorities.

=== Dealing with Clowns ===

Different editors will likely want to take different approaches when encountering Clowns. The Clowns like to puff up their chests (usually blowing into their thumb) to make themselves seem big and scary. They say things to intimidate editors such as "Watch out for the NSA" or "You could get shipped off to Gitmo". Editors should just laugh hysterically at these jokes (some editors may choose to use the silent laugh of the Clowns: simply pantomiming the laugh).

For some editors, the best approach, when encountering Clowns, would be to simply move on to another article that is not a circus ring. If contributing to Wikipedia is still viewed as important to an editor despite the prevalence of Clowns, it is simply best to avoid the Clowns.

Other editors however, will be offended by the roaming free Clowns. In this case Wikipedia etiquette allows (even expects) editors to taunt the Clowns. This is easily done, because they have no sense of humor whatsoever. Tell them how much you love Clowns. How funny you think Clowns are. How silly they look. How disturbing they are. Show utter contempt for everything they stand for: they are basically mercenaries who would sell their mother into slavery if it would further their Clown goals.

=== Whatever you do, DO NOT feed the Clowns ===
Contributing time to Wikipedia is one thing. However, contributing money is highly unadvised. Wikipedia’s “Don'’t ask, don’t tell’ policy regarding Clowns means that it is endorsing the acts of representatives of the lion’s share of the United States Government: over $1 trillion dollars per year. This is a sum greater than the combined budgets of all other militaries worldwide. Wikipedia will not go away if you do not contribute your own money. There is an abundance already in the United States Federal budget. '''DO NOT FEED THE CLOWNS'''

NEWSFLASH! Minutemen exposing federal authorities propagandizing on Wikipedia reaches

== The Miniutemen ==

Dubbed the Miniutemen after the heros of the American revolution who bravely threw off the British imperialist in the 18th century, these contemporary Minutemen now bravely work to oust the imperialist from Wikipedia. These new imperialists are more insidious than the British, because these imperialists dominate from within. They do not wear red coats, but rather attempt to fit in with the rest of us;; rally us against ourselves; and all for the sake of what Erich Fromm called: “extreme opportunism”. The Whitehouse, by infiltrating Wikipedia, has shown utter contempt not only for our cherished, free, online encyclopedia, but also utter contempt for the Constitution of the United States of America. We citizens of the United States deserve a government that is an example to the rest of the world: above all one with a free and independent press. The current Whitehouse has decided to undo over 200 years of a free press in the United States to control the content of Wikipedia. Our hats go off to these brave and defiant Wiki editors.

We invite you to examine the history of these editors. These editors have all been blocked. And for what? The Whitehouse Clowns will tell you its because they are sockpuppets for Cplot. Yet they provide no evidence. And this only begs the question anyway,What are Cplot’s crimes. Examine Cplot’s contributions to Wikipedia. You will find someone who dutifully contributed content, worked to fix errors, and sought to negotiate compromise on every article encountered. Always looking for compromise. The record is clear. Cplot was blocked for disagreeing with the Whitehouse Clowns. The record is there so you can check it for yourselves.

Please join in openly protesting the Whitehouse invasion of Wikipedia. Include the '''red''' <nowiki>[[Category:goodbye-clowns]]</nowiki> category on your user talk page. The Whitehouse will never allow us to create a category and turn that category blue, but let it stay red in defiance!

== Lessons in the Constitution of the United States of America for Clowns ==

Clowns believe they are working for America. However consider this. For Clowns to be working for America, Congress would have to pass a bill enacting their program. However in 1791 the US Constitution was amended to say: “Congress shall make no law […] abridging the freedom of […] press”. So as you can see, Congress would have to make a law to enable Clowns. Yet Congress has no authority to make Clowns. You can see the problem here.

    Some question

    I want to create an explaining page for European Business School providing links to wikipedia-articles of the corresponding european business schools and create some articles for them. But the bot won't let me? How do I mark an article as "should be deleted"? I think EBS_University_Cooperations is a very stupid article and the homepage of the corresponding college/school has more recent informations. Loggar 14:26, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Recreating a Yu-Gi-Oh! page

    The current conversation I've had with an admin regarding this subject can be found here. Now, He and I had a bit of a dispute in December (a link in the section specified in the link will provide that conversation too), and the end result regarding sources was that in the case of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, episodes could be considered viable sources, but only when backed-up by a written, secondary source.

    Now I've asked him if I could recreate a page he's deleted twice in the past (both unfairly in my opinion, but that's besides the point). He claimed at first I had no source, then that the page would be based on original research. The page in question is "Cyber-Series". In the anime in question, this refers to a series of cards with "Cyber" and "Cyberdark" in their names. The page as I would like to create it would refer to the two's relation to yin and yang, the dojo in which using the cards was trained, and the character who uses them and furthermore develops to reflect them during the series.

    Now, I have a written source, and I have already been told I could use the episodes as a source with a secondary source. Also, I am fully prepared to offer citations to the episodes in question. And it is states in the series itself that the two "Cyber" cards are yin and yang, and that the character desires the Cyberdark cards to match his new, evil personality. Now, there is no original research involved, and I have both a secondary and a primary source, both of which are official. Do I have adaquate grounds to re-create this page? That page seems more like a chatboard than help, but I posted there as well. Still, I'll keep my question posted here. The guy I've been arguing with over this has been a real jerk and I need an admin to back me up. Based on all the conversations I've had with him and other mods, there don't seem to be any reasons why I can't recreate the article, but he still refuses. Amending wrong information

    You have an article under the heading of HMS.Centaur,inwhich you state that this was one of three carriers, the others being HMS's Bulwark and Albion. You also say the Centaur was the only one to retain the fore and aft flight deck !!! Wrong, very wrong, HMS Centaur was the very first Angled Deck Carrier in the world. I know I was serving on her,she was commissioned in Belfast in 1953, completed her sea trials and then sailed directly to Portsmouth Dockyards and commenced a six month refit to install the angled deck. She was then sent to the Mediterranean where Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten seconded her into his squadron so that he could, in his words, "Show off to the bloody Yanks with something they had not yet got" .

    Regards Richard Sims.

    Foreign language titles

    Please could you provide a few pointers regarding the foreign language words at JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. The article is split up into sections for each part of the manga series. Underneath each of those section headers, the Japanese equivalent of the title is provided, and linked to its Japanese-version article at ja.wikipedia.org, like this:

    Part 1: Phantom Blood

    Part 1: ファントムブラッド

    The story begins...

    What changes would you suggest to this format/style, if any, and are there any specific guidelines when presenting the foreign-language equivalent of a title and link it?

    Thanks. —XhantarTalk 06:25, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    There is a template for Japanese titles, in this case it would look like Phantom Blood (ファントムブラッド) (like the main title of the article). It's best to include a transliteration as well. -- Rick Block (talk) 15:07, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Music examples

    For an article I’m thinking of writing (List of ragas) I will need to create a very large number of music example images similar to this one[1]. It was created with GNU Lilypond. However I do not know how to write in C++. Is there another way to create music examples such as this one? Thanks! S.dedalus 06:51, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    You won't be writing for Lilypond using C++, you'll be using a markup language from the program (the article has an example). C++ was just the programming language in which the program was written on. — Kieff 23:48, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Information deleted

    • I contributed some information to an article about a band called Kids Can Rock and Roll. It included the stage names of the performers, as well as their real names. I just noticed that the latter have been deleted, suppossedly by one of the band members (according to the history log). I don't really care, but I am curious as to how to handle this sort of edit. Are their real identities private information that shouldn't be included in the article? --Vbd 09:39, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • Was that information verifiable through some reliable source? If it is already written elsewhere, the band members can't really claim it's private. However, if whoever edited it can prove their identity and make an official complaint there's a good chance the information can get removed per WP:BLP. Note, that often fans use band member names as usernames. Determining who actually removed it is key in the process. - Mgm|(talk) 11:34, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    I posted a category for deletion and now seem to be engaged in a debate with one other user about it. Is there a time limit on such discussions? How long does it take for a decision to be made about the proposed deletion? And who decides?

    Help with videos

    How can you post home-made videos on your user page? talk

    WP:NOT a blog. You can post to Commons, but please read the guidelines there as well. Xiner (talk, email) 19:06, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Is it a video involving a Penis. Vagina. Boobs. Balls. Dirty Sanchez. Eiffel Tower. Cleveland Steamer. Rusty Trombone. Jack Hammer. Reverse Cowgirl. Skeletor. Leap Frog. Italian Chandelier. Black Bee. Harvey Wallbanger. Drilling for Oil? Remember be Bold and finally remember the most important rule Wikipedia does not have firm rules, "if the rules prevent you from improving or maintaining Wikipedia, ignore them." But, if you still feel like trying out something on your user page... check out Wikipedia:User page. Obviously your pornographic picture movie will meet the requirements for free licence.

    Remember though, not everyone thinks it's appropriate to see a video on "non-stop birth control, being able to go on the pill, stay on the pill... that you practice from mouth to muff and anal doggy style safe sex... with your girlfriends hot friend watching and Jimmy the next-door neighboor whome also waxes your back. That's because as per WP:User page#Removal "If the community lets you know that they would rather you delete some content from your user space, you should consider doing so - such content is only permitted with the consent of the community. After you've been here for a while, and written lots of great articles, the community may be more inclined to let you "get away with it". Alternatively, you could move the content to another site, and link to it.

    If you do not cooperate, we will eventually remove inappropriate content, either by editing the page (if only part of it is inappropriate), or by redirecting it to your main user page (if it is entirely inappropriate)." But everyone has a subjective tolerance to what is innapropriate... here is a guideline for sexually explicity images... Wikipedia:WikiProject Sexology and sexuality/WIP-image-guidelines. What is there is still under discussion of concensus but you should be alloud to post your video... so long as it's not child pornogrophy according to California Law (or something like that). To be taken seriously you need to follow this rule Wikipedia:Profanity, which states "profanity should either appear in its full form or not at all." A good way would be to say something like "I would much prefer to know what wikipedian think of this video. Were they embarrassed? Were they curious? Were they repulsed? Were they thinking it was the greatest thing going since sliced bread? I would loved to have heard a conversation between males and females on their attitudes towards it because I'd be willing to bet half of the guys were just as embarrassed as the females were and didn't know how to deal with it and because they're guys and the expectation is if you're a guy you're going to have a "hehehe go for it" attitude and that may not have been how they were feeling."

    If you read through that rule carefully... that means if it is partially inappropriate the content will be edited but if it is totally inappropriate they wil redirect it right back to itself.

    If you do this though I would suggest being carefull on who you contact because they'll probably think your a Troll. Anyway good luck with your pornographical video productions! --CyclePat 06:15, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    When searching on google for "home-made videos"... there is 1.7 million hits. Most link are porn related. Obviously the next question was going to be about the sexual intercourse. Of course maybe it was a home-video of him baking cookies, then going for a bike ride... but I'dd like to entertain the sexual phantasy as my intrinsic sexual "moi" senses were saying. Think of it like a type of gaydar but for porn. We know! --CyclePat 06:34, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    2)How do I get my stuff (on my userspace) to align to the left?

    Thank you,--Darkest Hour Ж=Ж 19:57, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    How do I create a special page? Generally, you don't. Special pages are an integral part of the MediaWiki software itself. If you are a PHP programmer then you can contact the MediaWiki staff and ask to become a developer. Then you can be granted access to the source code. I am a programmer myself but I do not know any PHP so I would not become a MediaWki developer at this time. JIP | Talk 20:39, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    The answer to the first question is to become a developer. See m:How to become a MediaWiki hacker if you want to follow that dark and thankless path.
    As to the second, it can be done with some CSS. Titoxd(?!?) 05:02, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Title of page problem

    I see that the page has been moved, but no response here, so I'll explain. Users who have been here for a while (four days or so, I think) get a little button at the top that says 'move.' You use that to rename pages. --Sopoforic 20:26, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Guidelines for Religion definition

    Hi All,

    I saw the wikipedia guidelines say someplace that in articles about religions the definition of the religion or religious tenets have to be taken from the doctrines adopted by those in the religion.

    Wikisource e-mail address confirmation error

    Hi Wikipedia - I clicked the confirmation link in the email I just received after creating my account, and the confirmation window opened. When I tried to sign into Wikipedia ten minutes later, however, I got this message:

    Login error: There is no user by the name "_______". User names are case sensitive. Please check your spelling, or use the link below to create a new user account.

    It's not a case-sensitive problem, because I copied and pasted my Username from the confirmation email. I tried the "Email New Password" button, but received the same message and did not receive an email. What can I do?

    You may be confusing Wikipedia with Wikisource. They are different projects that each require their own registration. Try logging into Wikisource here, or creating a Wikipedia account here.--Werdan7T @ 21:49, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    I've had the same problem with Wikisource specifically, and I doubt this user's problem is due to any confusion between Wikipedia and Wikisource. I'm asking for help here because there doesn't seem to be anything similar to this Help Desk in Wikisource. I've been able to create accounts on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikimedia Meta-Wiki without incident; the problem appears to be specific to Wikisource. I got a confirmation email from Wikisource similar to the ones sent by Wikipedia, the Commons, and Meta. But when I tried to log in as "Neuromath" on Wikisource, it said "no such user", and yet when I tried to create the account again in order to get around the problem, it said I couldn't because an account by that name already existed. I would really appreciate some help from someone familiar with Wikisource. —Neuromath 03:53, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Suppressing categories in templates

    If a category includes a template, is there anyway to use that template and suppress the category? For example, if I wanted to show somebody a userbox like:

    This user is interested in ancient Rome.

    but I don't want to actually force the Help desk page into the associated category (since the Help Desk is not interested in ancient Rome, per se), what can I do?--JayHenry 21:41, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    I believe you could subst it-{{subst:User Rome}}- then hit page preview. The code will appear, and you can edit out the category, then save. 24.20.69.240 21:44, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    Almost. The template code will not show up in the preview. You'd have to use the substitute syntax, then save the edit, then edit the page again, then delete the category tag, and finally save the page. Maybe someone else can think of a better way of doing this. --Plek 21:53, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    The caveat there is that you'd be delinked from the actual userbox page. It'd be equivalent to copying the code from the template minus the lines for including the category. I'm not sure there's an alternative though. Xiner (talk, email) 22:02, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    I was hoping for a <suppress category> ... </suppress> sort of shortcut. Oh well... I guess subst works as does copying the code from the template. Thanks for the help and if there's a different shortcut let me know!!--JayHenry 22:07, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    For the record, I'm very interested in ancient Rome. .V. (talk) 22:09, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    Wrap the categories in the template with a parameter ({{{category|[[Category:Wikipedians interested in ancient Rome]]}}}) then call the template with a blank value passed to the parameter ({{User:UBX/Rome|category=}}). I've already adjusted the template on this page. —{admin} Pathoschild 22:22, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

    How do I deal with someone who insists a picture I scanned from a comic book is incorrect and replaces it and the description with information gotten from a piece of fan art? In specific, we're arguing over the identification of an extremely minor character for a list of characters, and he is comparing my scan to a piece of fan art and saying that the character has too many differences from the fan art image to be the character in question. --Miriam The Bat(Talk) (Contribs) (Sign Me!) 00:48, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    A precusory glance leads me to think he's dealing with original research. If that's the case, quote him WP:OR and insist on reliable references for his claims. If he continues to remove content without justification, use templates like {{needsource}} or {{test1a}} on his user page (see WP:TUSER). Remember to subst: per instructions. Though there are strong arguments against including copyright images, fan art of copyright characters has just as many problems. Clearly no free alternative can be available, but it's important to make sure any fair use claim is completely justified. The use of copyright images for illustrating a gallery has been challenged before (e.g. in discographies). It is never going to be possible to illustrate everything.Notinasnaid 11:05, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would have accepted the warning when the problem with me was occuring, but during that period I genuinly belived what I was doing was right. I may have been later proved wrong but TStein is dragingn up the issue again. I would also not removed it from talk page if it was put there by an admin, but i removed it as i thought it was a joke at first, but i turned out TStein was being serious so i left a message on TStein talk page and then added anothe warning about removing the original warning. I think one of a number of things are happening here with TStein and the are either:

    1. I am being victimised and harassed by TStein.
    2. TStein is deliberatly trying to drag up and infalme an edit war again.
    3. TStein is being beligerant and dosent like someone disagreeing and is using my talk page and subsequently wikipedia to make a point.
    Because you have not left the warnings in question on your talk page, it is difficult to assess this conflict. Removing warnings yourself is generally considered poor etiquette and not cool. However, I looked at the warnings in the talk page history; if TStein's assertions about your actions are correct, he has valid points: you should strive for consensus as part of your editing, and if you find you have edited an article against consensus, you should not reinsert those edits into the article. --Tkynerd 02:07, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    Tkynerd, it is my understanding that there is no policy requiring editors to retain warning templates. Am I wrong? Is there a guideline somewhere that describes it as 'poor etiquette' or 'not cool'? Anchoress 02:59, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    You're right, Anchoress, although there's also the warning templates for removing the warnings (e.g., {{Drmmt}}). I think the first one could be justified here, but using it always brings the risk of turning an editing episode into something other than what had instigated it in the first place. I think eventually someone will work on a better solution, but meanwhile, we should just let it go and warn the users for the actual infractions if they continue. Xiner (talk, email) 03:02, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    Anchoress, you'll note that I did not refer to policy or guidelines in my reply to Lucy-marie. My understanding of community consensus on Wikipedia is that removing warnings from your talk page is strongly frowned upon unless it can be demonstrated that they were placed for no good reason. That happens not to be the case here. --Tkynerd 03:06, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    The reason why I asked is because my understanding is that there is no community consensus on the appropriateness of removing warnings; I am not being faux naif or disingenuous; I asked because I know the issue is brought up regularly and I didn't know if opinion had changed. I believe that in the absence of a policy or guideline, there is sufficient community division on the matter render your warning to the original poster inappropriate. Anchoress 03:56, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    It would help, Lucy-Marie, if you provided links to edit summaries (specifically, the ones that were reasons for the warnings.) .V. (talk) 03:10, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    I hope that you are able to resolve this issue, but this discussion really should be moved off the help desk, where it may just disconcert newcomers, to a more appropriate place: perhaps one of your talkpages, or a noticeboard? Thanks for your consideration. Newyorkbrad 03:14, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Removal of warnings from user pages (by the user) is not a violation of policy. The notice is still viewable via the page history should an admin or another editor decide to review a user's history for a possible pattern of problems.

    Verification

    in wikipedia ..everywhere i have seen a edit option. means any one can modify. is there any verification done after these editing from your side or not.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.101.61.10 (talkcontribs) 23:27, January 17, 2007

    Verification is usually done by other editors, such as yourself. This way, you don't simply have to take the word of a Wikipedia page, you can see where others got the information from. If there's no source to verify, then the text should be removed until it can be. That's the best part of Wikipedia: anybody can add text, but everyone else can make sure it's really a fact and not just opition. -- Kesh 04:33, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    Often, sentences, paragraphs, or even whole articles will have tags saying that information doesn't have a source - this is an indication that the information may not be correct and thus should be taken with a grain of salt...Wikipedia is a lot about common sense - don't take anything blindly without being a bit skeptical that someone's pulling your leg. But overall, popular articles are usually quite accurate. —Keakealani·?·!·@ 06:06, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Starting a New Article Of Our Site

    Dear Sir,

    I would like to post articles related our category segment but I could not able to get where actually it has to post..please send me the details where it should be done...

    Is there any option is available in the site to post articles..in the site??

    Help...trouble with my personal page

    Please, can someone help! I just began working on my "personal" page, and included a photo. It took several tries. When then thumbnail is enlarged, the history is revealed, showing my real name, and not just my user name...also the source of the picture (on my computer). I cannot delete "History" items, and need the help of an Administrator.

    My user name is Prof.rick ...I don't want my actual name to be seen. Thank you Prof.rick 10:01, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Cleaning up history is hard, but there is another approach. You can get the image deleted, much less work for an administator, then put it back again without the history. If it was an article you could add {{db-self}} to it, but I'll have to leave it to someone else to say how it's done for a picture. Notinasnaid 10:36, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    You can list the image for deletion at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion. I don't know if there is a faster way; this doesn't seem to qualify for speedy delete. -- John Broughton | (♫♫) 23:28, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Deeplinking to wikipedia

    Is it possible to use content of wikipedia on your own site, however WITHOUT copying the content itself (so if the page in wikipedia gets modified, it gets automatically modified on your private website in 'realtime' as well). I would like to have just plain text of wikipedia>>subject on my page, without the menus/tabs/style of wikipedia. 82.170.69.65 17:20, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Nope. This would also be frowned upon, as the load would still be on Wikipedia to serve the content to your viewers. You're better off just copying it to your own site, or posting a direct link to the page in question if you don't want to update it yourself. -- Kesh
    ...or both. The Transhumanist    10:21, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    A user is insisting that content not appear in Wikipedia because the person it concerns wouldn't want it here. The user is not actually making legal threats (yet) and I am wondering where I can direct this editor to obtain more information on relevant legal policies and perhaps file a formal or semiformal complaint or whatever the problem supposedly necessitates. The relevant text is in the edit summaries of this history page and User_talk:Coelacan#Robert_Lentz if it matters. — coelacan talk11:02, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    This can most often be dealt with for text content by applying existing policies properly. Is the information sourced? If not, it must be removed immediately if challenged; this is specific to biographies of living people I should note. Beyond that, if it is sourced, examine the source. Does it meet Wikipedia's definitions of a reliable source (e.g. good: newspaper, book; bad: blog, online forum, some web site not associated with a publisher). Source bad: delete immediately. Does that cover this case? Notinasnaid 11:35, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    It certainly does, but I think the user wants somewhere to complain. Is there anything more specific than WP:RFC? Anything that concerns pseudo-legal complaints? — coelacan talk11:45, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    Hmm, a superficial look at the links suggests the debate is actually about whether to include a picture, in which case none of the above apply. If it is a copyright picture, the fair use argument must be strong, and the argument there doesn't seem to cover inclusion in Saints Sergius and Bacchus at all. Notinasnaid 11:51, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    I see that someone has changed the description of the picture. I didn't notice that. I'll have to look into whether this is a painting of Sergius and Bacchus or Polyeuctus and Nearchus. Regardless, the issue is apparently going to arise with this artist's work, no matter what article it's in. — coelacan talk11:58, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    It is indeed. The only applicable policy, I think, is to carefully examine fair use claims. Notinasnaid 12:07, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Write {{subst:prod|I think this article should be deleted, because of such-and-such. Lorem ipsum and so on.}} at the top of the article. If this is left alone for five days, an admin will come around and delete the article. If, however, someone removes the notice, do not replace it. Instead, write {{subst:afd}} at the top, and follow the AfD instructions. The AfD tag is replaceable. JIP | Talk 17:55, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    Yes, try prod first (as described above), and then if that doesn't work, the Articles for Deletion process (again as described above). There are instructions for AfD at Template:AfD in 3 steps. --ais523 17:57, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
    • It doesn't look too large to me and I don't recommend deleting an article about a character in an important literary work even if it is a minor character. More generally, what is the appropriate process, if any (a pointer to a FAQ is sufficient). FWIW, I tried following: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Uploading_images#Find_previously_uploaded_images but it gets you the first page of 50 uploaded images out of a very large number and the list does not appear to be searchable. Hello there I’m new here and I want to upload some pictures. I’m not quite sure how to handle copyright issues. I know there is an article with rules about that but how does these apply on old objects. Take for example this picture. http://www.geocities.com/garyweb65/ashurbanipal.jpg It’s on a free geocities domain. Should I ask for permission to use it? But in that case, who is the owner of this picture? Is it the holder of the domain? Is it the person who made a photograph of this object? Or is it the museum where this object currently is? All possibilities provide problems because the domain holder doesn’t own the object, it’s impossible to find out who made the photograph, and should a museum be asked for permission tot use a picture that roams free over the net? Please enlighten me. Djaser 21:02, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Just because an image is on a free geocities page doesn't mean that the person who put it there has the copyright to it. However, since it's apparently an image from ancient times, there would be no copyright, unless it's a photo from a museum page which the person appropriated without proper copyright description. User:Zoe|(talk) 21:28, 18 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    Actually, I think a good case could be made that the copyright belongs to the photographer, even though it's a picture of something old, though legal opinions differ. Being from a museum page or someone's holiday snapshot certainly makes no differnce to copyright. If you want to use the picture, you should ask them the place you found it to confirm that they are the photographer, and that they release the picture into a suitable license for all uses, including commercial use (there is a particular formality that has to be followed here). If they are not the photographer, ask where they found it originally, and continue the quest. Notinasnaid 09:16, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Article deletion history (AfD, prod, CSD)

    Black Falcon 00:19, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Articles that have survived an AfD should have a template at the top of their Talk page to indicate. See Talk:Series of tubes for an example. However, deleted articles tend to not keep their old AfDs and such around for more than a couple months, from what I can tell. -- Kesh 00:34, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    There should always be a note on the talk page, but all AfD debates are preserved so Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/article should show any previous debate.
    Not really, except for skimming the edit history for summaries
    You can find AfD listings for similar sounding articles by either searching the Wikipedia: namespace for possible terms or by using Special:Prefixindex (eg articles nominated for deletion which start 'Shogun'.) --Cherry blossom tree 00:41, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Mostly WP:CIVIL and WP:ATTACK. Not to mention all the nonsense added to the Talk page. I've placed an appropriate warning template on the user's page.
    I wouldn't worry about the cutting comments, as this seems to be an attention grab. If more serious comments were made, I still can't think of an appropriate avenue for taking action. There's no central body on Wikipedia that could respond to such. -- Kesh 02:54, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    I haven't been on for quite some time, and I noticed something on the watchlist that didn't exist since the last time I was active. They are little green and red numbers (denoting sign) in parantheses next to the page names. What do they mean? —Akrabbimtalk 03:37, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    They tell the number of bytes added or subtracted to the page's code. They are useful for finding vandalism (like replacing a page with an expletive, or such). --Sopoforic 03:42, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Homepage as a reference source

    I have been helping out with [[Category:Articles lacking sources]] and came across an article about James Kirchner the only biographic material I could find on him that fitted the stub was on his homepage I went ahead and put in the reference and removed the tag, however I have doubts as to a homepage being a legit source for wikipedia if someone could let me know so I could leave, research more or re-instate tag it would be appreciated. Using pictures from different versions of Wikipedia

    If an article from one language version of Wikipedia has a picture, is it safe to assume that it's okay to upload the same picture into the article from another language version of Wikipedia? Haverpopper 05:20, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    I posted some info on a painter, Andre Daude, but I'm having trouble showing any of the downloaded photos. Let me know how to do this. Also, this painting was purchased by myself, Neil Lipson about 50 years ago, and I don't see a copyright notice on it. Will this be allowable to post? I also found a notice about a spam email address, but I used my own email address, lipson@att.net. I don't have any bio info on this painting which is the reason I'm posting what info I do have. Let me know how to fix this.

    Thanks,

    Note: Email removed because of privacy reasons. Yuser31415 07:06, 19 January 2007 (UTC) You'll want to read up on our fair use policy. You see, different versions of Wikipedia tend to have their own copyright rules; so it is better to be versed in ours before uploading anything. Yuser31415 07:06, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    It depends. If the image used in the other Wikipedia is stored in the Wikimedia Commons, it is safe to use here. If it is not, verify the copyright status of the image; if it is released under a free license, upload it to Commons instead, so everyone can use it. Titoxd(?!?) 07:15, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    A better explanation is this: if the image is at Wikimedia Commons, it can be accessed and used by all wikis without the need to reupload. If it was uploaded on a different Wikipedia, however, you might be able to upload it here. If it is Fair Use, you'll have to do some checking on the copyrights (feel free to ask the Help Desk). If the image in question is licensed as GFDL or Public Domain, then you'd do more good by uploading it at Commons so everyone else can use it as well. — Kieff 07:25, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Homepages attempt 3

    While checking [[Category:Articles lacking sources]] I was reviewing the James Kirchner article for sources a quick google search showed the best source of the relevant info on his homepage. I added a link to the page as a reference and removed the tag. However I am unsure about the use of someones homepage as an accurate source so do I leave my edit alone, or research some more for better sources and provide them or retag the article as the case maybe thanks --Matt 05:37, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    • Other people may disagree with me, but I believe someone's homepage is a valid source as long as you establish notability through some independant source other than the homepage first. - Mgm|(talk) 05:47, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
      • It's okay - in fact, very useful - to include a home page in the External links section of an article. Using a person's personal website as a reference/footnote is a bit more dicey. If you're going to do that, it probably should be for sentences that read like this: "According to Kirchner's personal website, he was born and raised ... ", rather than "Kirchner was born and raised ... ". I've gone ahead and changed the reference/footnote to an external link.
        • I would have suggested either retagging the article (the purpose is to encourage others to visit the page and improve it) or doing some further research yourself to find other sources of information, but another reference has been added to the page, and I added an embedded link as well, so it's okay to leave the unsourced tag off the article as it now stands. -- John Broughton | (♫♫) 16:03, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Section editting

    Is there a way to selectively remove the special edit links for some of the subsection ? This will be useful say while viewing multiple column text (e.g. Fluid dynamics: See also section). The edit links for the subsections are too close to the next column. Not that they are not useful, but one edit link to edit the whole section would suffice in such cases. The __NOEDITSECTION__ tag works fine, but it removes all the edit links from the sections and subsection in the article. Thank you. myth 07:49, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Photography

    Hello. I've just started making some contributions and wondered what the policy was on an issue relating to photography. I have uploaded one of my pictures to an article on the Clywdian Range of hills in Wales. I am happy for this photo to be used anywhere, by anyone, but don't know whether it is the 'done thing' to say that users can email me for a high res version of the image. I'm not looking for any kind of profit on this, just want to know the protocol. ElgyB 09:58, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Please upload the highest resolution version you have. You should also tag the image with {{GFDL-self}} in the license section.—WAvegetarian(talk) 09:59, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    OK. Many thanks. ElgyB 10:02, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    • Yes, you can save yourself a lot of work by simply uploading the largest version you are comfortable about sharing with other users. That way you don't have to answer email queries. You can also multi-license your images -- allow them to be used under other restrictions. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags. Perhaps you want to add a Creative Commons license too. That saves people from having to copy the GFDL license along with the image if they use it. - Mgm|(talk) 10:47, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Problem inserting a reference

    I have tried multiple times to properly format a reference in the Monte Ne article. No matter how I try, either using a cite template or entering it manually, it refuses to format. Can you look at it to fix, and if you are successful, please tell me where my error lies? This has happened to me more than once, and it is extremely frustrating. Thanks in advance, Jeffpw 11:51, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    • I fixed it. You can check the article history to see what I did. I think it failed to work because you used a hard return (forcing a new line) within the template. I also recommend using naming refs like this: <ref name="EXAMPLE">blah</ref> so you can refer back to them using that name without typing out the entire template multiple times. If you want to reuse a previous reference you can write: <ref name="EXAMPLE" />. Note the lack of a closing tag in this one. - Mgm|(talk) 12:17, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    admin rights and responsibilities

    Hi,

    where can I find the rights and responsibilities of an admin? I have no problems in the english version but I started translating into Slovak (from english wiki, which I assume is OK, haven't found otherwise) and one of the admins keeps reversing the articles ( not only mines, there is a whole bunch of us on his discussion page asking the same thing) for "gramatical mistakes" reasons. I'd like to know what his rights are because clearly he thinks it is OK to delete a whole article. Slovak wiki has very little artlicles and if he discurages people with this (which he does) noone will want to write there and that for me defies the purpose of wiki.

    thanks for your help,

    Sandra

    you could have a look at WP:ADMIN - that page also suggests the Wikipedia:Administrators' how-to guide and Wikipedia:Administrators' reading list although I'm not sure such policies and advice have any credance on the slovak wiki - they probably have their own. Sounds to me though that the person in question isn't really acting as an admin in reverting your edits but is acting as a standard editor. As such, he is subject to all the rules the rest of us are. Have you tried talking to him about it? If he's a grammar expert, perhaps he should just fix your grammar rather than just revert it. --Mcginnly | Natter 14:07, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    Yes, each Wikipedia (English, French, Slovak, etc.) has their own admins and their own processes. The Wikimedia Foundation provides the hardware and software, but lets each language (project) do its own thing, mostly. So you should search the Slovak wikipedia for information on their processes. If you don't find anything there, or believe that they aren't observing the spirit of what Wikipedia (as a whole) should be about, you might want to contact a steward - they do monitor things across all wikipedias - see m:Stewards. Or take a look at the meta pages in general - these apply to all projects (you could start at m:Main Page. And yes, there are absolutely no restrictions on translating content from one wiki to another - that's encouraged, in fact.) -- John Broughton | (♫♫) 15:41, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    generating lists

    At WP:ARCHA we've got some way through the assessment process. And there's a great little bot that generates statistics for us in a matrix at the top of the page. What would be really usefull though is to be able to generate a list of say, all start-class articles that are also top importance. Does anyone know how to do this? I'm recently approved for AWB and I think I can generate a list of all mid, low and none importance articles and filter the list of start-class articles to exclude them - but this seems a bit longwinded - is there an easier, more obvious way that I'm missing? --Mcginnly | Natter 14:02, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    The Wikipedia search engine can do this, i.e. your particular query would be http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?ns1=1&search=%7B%7BArchitecture%7Cclass%3Dstart%7Cimportance%3Dhigh%7D%7D&fulltext=Search . Copyright..

    Having looked around Im confused about the use of copyright. If i take a picture of..say a company logo..or avideo game cover..if this fair use? or is it my picture because I took it? would this be the same in every occasion? such as pictures of people and places? or only certain conditions? Fethroesforia 15:34, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    A photo of a company logo or a video game cover would have to be fair use, because most of the creative work that would produce the final image would be the company's (your input would be limited to lighting, angle, etc.). A picture of a person would normally be free use if you took it yourself and licenced it appropriately, because you have all the creative input in the picture (although in some cases there might be other reasons why you couldn't use the picture of someone without their consent; I'm not sure about this, but I think it has something to do with the country you/they live in); with a picture of a place, it would depend on what was in the picture (a picture of a hill would usually be licensable by the person who took it as free use, whereas the picture of the front of a shop, containing logos and pictures created by that business, would likely be usable as free use only). I'm not a lawyer, however, so I may be wrong about some of this; you might want to discuss a particular situation on Wikipedia talk:Copyrights/Can I use.... --ais523 15:41, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

    Citing Wikipedia using the Cite Tool

    How does the cite this article tool work?

    I have noticed that clicking the cite this article link on the left side of the page, generates a citation page for said article and there is a button labled "Cite"...

    What does this button do? Is there any way to export the citation to EndNote?

    In APA format?

    Grossmanhm 17:42, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    The cite this article tool (I presume) just takes the information and formats it according to a template. The 'cite' button is there so that you can change the name of the page in the box to the left of it, and then click 'cite' to get the citation for the new page. If you want to use the citation in endnote, see this link. That will let you import BibTeX citations into endnote. The 'cite this article' tool has a BibTeX entry, so you should be able to make use of it. (note that I don't use endnote, so I can't guarantee that it will work) --Sopoforic 20:55, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    Minor addendum - The "Cite" button doesn't do anything except re-create the page unless you change the name of the article, in which case it generates a new page with the cite for that new article - try it. -- John Broughton | (♫♫) 00:16, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Page Forwarding

    The page for Michael O. Johanns, the current Secretary of Agriculture is listed under Mike Johanns. How can I make is so if you type his full name it will forward to the correct article?

    Also, under the "wiki rules" should it actually be reversed where the article is his full/real name and the shorthand version is the one that gets forwarded?

    --Jwikipro 18:16, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    The full name should probably be used unless the short name is particularly famous or something. To move the page, just click the move button at the top; it will automatically create the redirect from the original to the new location. See Help:Redirect on creating redirects. Basically, just make it so the only thing on the article is:
    #REDIRECT [[Target article]]
    -- Consumed Crustacean (talk) 18:24, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    The rules for naming say to use the name by which a person is most commonly known: see Wikipedia:Naming conventions (common names) (I'm not sure whether this advice conflicts with Consumed Crustacean's in this case). As for creating the redirect, you can do it by typing
    #REDIRECT [[Mike Johanns]]

    as the only text in the page Michael O. Johanns. Hope that helps! --ais523 18:26, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

    Page Moves

    I recently wrote an article that had its name changed by another user. This article is about a topic that can have its name translated into English, or kept in its original Chinese. I named the article in its translated form (Way of the Celestial Masters), the other user changed the name to a Chinese-English hybrid (Tianshi School). Instead of using the possibly controversial move procedure, the user moved it himself. When I tried to move it back, he would contiually move it to his name. Eventually someone else noticed this edit war, and intervened to have it moved back to its orignal name. The user then protested and it was moved to the controversial move section. Keep in mind that the move was now from its new name (Tianshi School), back to its old name (Way of the Celestial Masters). Therefore the burden of the move was put on me to have it named back to its original form, and not on the other user to keep it as Tianshi School. The vote failed to have it changed back (with only three votes cast), and the article remained at Tianshi School. On January 10th, I went through the controversial move procedure and a vote was held in which 4 people were in favor of moving it back to 'Way of the Celestial Master', and another 2(the same 2 that voted against the move in the first place), voted to keep it. Thinking that a supermajority had been reached (the wkipedia page says that this qualifies as 60-80% of the votes), I took the liberty of moving the page back. This move was subsequently reverted by one of the users that was against the move. Now the article is in limbo.

    From this experience, I now feel that there is a serious flaw in Wkipedia's page move policies. Why is it that the burden of having the article moved has been placed on getting it back to its original name? Because the original user did not go through the possibly controversial move procedure to generate discussion, shouldn't the burden be placed on him to keep the article where it is? I feel that the article should be renamed 'Way of the Celestial Masters,' and then if the user still wants to rename it 'Tianshi School,' he can go through the controversial move procedure. I also feel that if such a situation happens again in which a user changes an article name that could be controversial, and someone disagrees, that the article name should be automatically reverted so that a proper discussion can take place on whether to move the article in the first place.

    Any input on what people think about this situation would be appreciated. Zeus1234 20:04, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    • If someone leaves a message on your talk page, it creates an entry in the User newtalk table that points to your username. If you visit your talk page, any entries pointing towards your username are deleted from the table by the software before your talk page is rendered and sent to your browser. So, if you visit your talk page before anything, you will never your "new messages" banner. The only way to know if there's a new message if you've done that is to manually look at the page history. You managed to create a Template, which happens to be an exact copy of your Userpage. See Template:Definite Article. I would suggest putting {{db-author}} at the top of the page, so an admin will delete it for you, since it's unnecessary. Then, delete {{Definite Article}} from your Userpage, as it won't go anywhere.
    Secondly, you don't want to create an article about your band. See WP:OR, WP:COI and WP:V. Until your band is big enough for reputable news sources to mention them, the article won't survive on Wikipedia, and it's bad form to create a page about your band yourself. Wikipedia is not a directory, nor is it advertising space.
    I do wish you and your band the best of luck, and hope to see you contribute to other articles here on Wikipedia. -- Kesh 23:35, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    I can't work out what to do about Sxe injected

    I arrived at Sxe injected on a recent changes patrol to revert some vandalism and discovered an article with a copyvio tag but the article doesn't appear to have been listed on the copyright problems page. The article is a claimed copyright violation of this page and appears to be a translation (from Spanish?). Any suggestions about what should be done with this page? Random Passer-by 00:30, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    It is listed on the copyvio page here. Looks like page deserves deleted, as a quick Babelfish translation looks really close to what's on the article page. Would've been helpful if the user had followed instructions and left better notes, though. -- Kesh 00:40, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    So a translation is still a copyvio? I know nothing about this area of copyright law and I can't find a Wikipedia copyright policy page which mentions translation. If it is then I'll add a speedy deletion tag (unless another editor does so first). Random Passer-by 01:01, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Without permission, yes. It's still the same text, just in a different language. Otherwise, someone could translate the latest Tom Clancy or Stephen King novel into, say, Swedish and sell it without paying royalties to the author & publisher. -- Kesh 01:03, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    (edit conflict) A translation of free material is of course not copyvio, but a translation of copyvio material is. See Talk:X60 Train for another example. Unfortunately the WP:VPA thread I refer to there is surely archived, but if you're interested, you can search for it. Basically, the idea is that translation doesn't magically solve the copyright problem with material. --Tkynerd 01:06, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Ok. I'll have a better idea of what to do if I encounter a similar problem again. I've added a speedy deletion tag. Thank you both. Random Passer-by 01:19, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Copyvio isn't a speedy deletion criterion. I have blanked the page, fixed the url, and listed it on today's copyvio log. --Wooty Woot? contribs 07:08, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Copyvio is a speedy deletion criterion (although it arguably might not apply in this case). I checked before I added the tag. See WP:CSD (criterion 12). Not that it particularly matters as long as the problem is dealt with. :-) Random Passer-by 16:58, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Deleting a #redirect

    How do I delete a #REDIRECT? I created one that I regret. It's a long story and has to do with a stalker that's trying to track me down. Philiped 01:44, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    It kind of depends on the circumstances, but in general, you could just put {{db|reason why this ought to be deleted}} on the page. --Sopoforic 01:49, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    How do I get to a #redirect page in order to request its deletion?

    Thanks. But...

    There is no page on which to put the request, because when I click on the link it takes me directly to the page it's pointing to. Philiped 02:41, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    When you end up at the target of the redirect, look right underneath the article title. There should be a little gray line which reads Redirected from somewhere. Click on the link to somewhere to get to the redirect page itself. Edit away. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 02:44, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Here's an example for getting to a redirect page: click on this link: Dubya. You should be redirected to George W. Bush. There will be the title "George W. Bush" at the top of the page, and then the subtitle "From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia", and then you will see

    ...approximately. So then, click on "Dubya" there, and that's how you can get to the redirect page. Do the same with your article, and then you'll be able to edit the redirect page. Blank it (the redirect page) and put {{db-author}} on it... and an admin should delete it. GracenotesT § 02:48, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    If it's not an article of your creation, though, list it on Redirects for discussion. Titoxd(?!?)

    My redirect pages are coming out wrong

    When I try to create a redirect page and click "Show preview," the redirect shows up as a number followed by the target page.

    For example, I just created a page on Július Tomin. A lot of people will probably type Julius Tomin, without the accent mark, in the search window. So, I created a page "Julius Tomin" and typed in "#redirect Július Tomin" (without the quotes, and with double brackets). Then I clicked "Show preview". Instead of the redirect arrow, I saw this:

    1. redirect Július Tomin

    The same thing happens when I put "REDIRECT" in caps. What am I doing wrong? Thank you. Cal Evans 04:47, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    If you click show preview, that's what it looks like. Click Save Page with the text #REDRIECT [[Target]], and you should be fine! — Deon555talkdesksign here! 04:51, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    deleting images

    Only administrators can delete images. Edit the description pages for your images and put {{db-author}} somewhere in the text, and save. An administrator will delete your images shortly. Cheers, Tangotango (talk) 14:06, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    deleting an entry

    There is a duplicate article for Agrobacterium tumefaciens which is classified as a plant stub and called Agrobacterium temefaciens. It has no new information in it, is very short, and is only there because tumefaciens is spelled incorrectly. It should be deleted but I don't know how to do that. Can someone help? Incidentally the stub is misclassified because A. tumefaciens is a bacterium, not a plant.Sarahjg 14:53, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    My guess -- and that's all it is -- is that the article would have been deleted as non-notable. If it did not make claims of notability that satisfy that guideline, it was probably speedy-deleted; otherwise it may have gone through an AfD or been prodded (proposed for deletion). Unfortunately there's no way for non-administrators to see the history of deleted pages, and I don't know of a good way to search old deletion discussions. --Tkynerd 17:01, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Myspace on Wikipedia

    Hi. I'm slightly curious about how the Wikipedia community sees links to myspace profiles in articles. Whilst on vandalism patrol, I often revert external myspace links, viewing them as spam links. However, I'm not sure whether this is the correct action to take. Can someone let me know what the accepted view on such links is? Many thanks Matthuxtable 17:23, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    I'm not very familiar with MySpace, but as I understand it, it is essentially a blog site to which users upload their own media/musings/detritus. In which case, your approach is correct: external links to blogs and fora are discouraged, and their use for references/research/citations is not permitted, as I understand it. Adrian M. H. 17:37, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • I wouldn't oppose a MySpace link if it's abundantly clear it belongs to the subject of an article that's undeniably notable. However, I don't recommend such links to be used as a source. And having a MySpace page isn't a good reason for someone to get an article. They're also subject to the spam policy. - 87.209.70.231 18:14, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    It's #10 at Wikipedia:External_links#Links_normally_to_be_avoided. The link pretty much says it all.--Kchase T 18:18, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    Additionally you need to be aware of imposter sites - there are several musicians with several fake MySpace profiles. And blog?\.myspace\.com is also blacklisted. -- zzuuzz (talk) 18:36, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    However, I would say there's nothing wrong with listing, on a musician's page, a MySpace page that the musician links to from her own official Web site as her own MySpace page, as has become relatively common practice. --Tkynerd 18:40, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    I don't think there is anything wrong with linking to MySpace, per se. However it falls under the same category of sources that aren't reliable, just like blogs and forum posts. However, if you can establish through other reliable sources that a MySpace link is legitimately part of the subject (like the MySpace page Weird Al created for White & Nerdy) then I would say the MySpace link is ok. You just have to be cautious with using MySpace links. —Mitaphane talk 19:30, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    Token new page patroller here. MySpace links are usually the prime suspect when dealing with a non-notable musician, in my experience. You'll often see pages that have a link to their website and/or a myspace page, and that's it. If you see these sorts of pages, and there are no sources or claims to notability, fire up the db-band gun. --Wooty Woot? contribs 20:39, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Problems with de-listing a cleanedup article?

    Hi, I overhauled Albany Movement and removed the cleanup tag. However, I can't find it on Wikipedia:Cleanup or or , or anywhere else. So I'm not sure if it's still listed, or what.

    On a related note, I'd like to complain that the entire cleanup process is highly confusing and frustrating, and I've now spent more time trying to figure it out than actually fixing the article.

    Eleland 18:00, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Adding the tag to the page automatically places it in a category. Similarly, removing it will mean the page is removed from the category and no longer listed. So you will no longer find it in a category. What part of the cleanup process did you find confusing? Trebor 18:27, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Category

    If I wanted to add a new category to something say a song, how would I go about it? For example under the Category:Songs by artist there are not several bands so what would I have to do to add the bands to it, and add the category on their songs' pages? AsicsTalk 18:40, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    To add an article to a category, add [[Category:Categoryname]] to the bottom of the page (but before the interlanguage wiki links). Whatever category you want to put the page in should replace "Categoryname". More detailed instructions for this can be found at WP:CATEGORY#How_to_put_an_article_into_categories and Help:Category#Putting_an_item_in_a_category. -- Natalya 18:48, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    I know how to make an interwiki link to another page and it will show up in the left sidebar. That is nice. The problem is when I try to make an interwiki link to commons, like commons:Help, it shows up as a regular link, not in the sidebar. Is there any way I can force a link to commons or meta to show up in the "In other languages" sidebar? Is it a CSS or JS thing? —Dgiest c 19:10, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    It's a javascript thing. If you're wanting to add links to the side bar try out the navigation shortcuts script. —Mitaphane talk 19:19, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • The interwiki links in the side menu you are talking about can only point to other Wikipedias. If you want to point to the commons or another project, you should use the relevant templates and put them in the external links section. It's a little more bulky but the only way it will work right now. - Mgm|(talk) 21:53, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Image question

    Whole images of baseball cards do not fall under the fair use rule. But what if I chop off most of the card and just include a picture of an athletes signiture? I did it with Aaron Myette.

    Is that a "legal" thing to do on Wikipedia? Thanks for the help. Alex 20:19, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    I believe what you have created is called a Derivative work. Without permission from the original copyright holder, making a derivative work violates their copyright, and definitely wouldn't be cover under fair use policy. —Mitaphane talk 20:49, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    Thanks for the help! Alex 20:54, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • Hypothetically speaking, what would be the copyright status if you took a mask and stripped away all of the baseball card except for the signature? Would it be a derivative work of the baseball card, or a derivative work of the signature? Is an image of someone's signature copyrightable, and if so, wouldn't that be fair use in come cases? —Dgiest c 00:32, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Dealing with childish behaviour from other editors

    What is the best approach for dealing with immature behaviour from an editor who refuses to discuss his edits? Adrian M. H. 21:57, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    (1) Keep your cool. :-) (2) Assuming you are acting in good faith, which I believe you are, continue to revert the relevant edits without violating WP:3RR. (3) If the situation escalates, try an RfC. --Tkynerd 22:06, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    Thanks for replying. At the moment, I have left it at one revert, after which the user added the comment with some rewording. His second attempt was actually worse, as it contained what could be construed as POV and weasel words, but while I was commenting on his talk page, he quickly revised his wording, leaving only the issue of transient current events. You can see the history here. I think the matter has probably been dropped as far as he is concerned, but I don't want to inflame it by reverting again. I wondered if there was any procedure that may apply in dealing with similar cases. Adrian M. H. 22:23, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    Yes, I read the exchange on his talk page, although I did not look at the relevant edits to the page in question. Hmm. I see you have posted about this on the article's talk page as well. I have to say I'm not entirely inclined to agree with you; plenty of Wikipedia articles contain information that documents current events. I will say, though, that I might agree that a biographical article may not be the ideal place for that kind of material. The comment in its current neutral form seems reasonably OK to me. --Tkynerd 22:34, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    My comment on the talk page was made at the time of my edit; good procedure, I know, when it may be controversial. I wouldn't have minded if the other editor had left a reply there, justifying his edit or agreeing to a revision, or something. Anything rather than re-insert the comment, with worse phrasing, with no edit summaries, and then to change it again, still without communicating with me. Ah well. Adrian M. Whitehouse using Wikipedia for Propoganda

    Please copy this message and paste it to other talk pages you normally participate in.. Wikipedia's integrity is at stake. If this is deleted please revert in order to restore it. We're starting here on the less political pages to hopefully avoid detection before a significant number of editors are alerted to the problem.

    Federal employees/contractors are now gaming Wikipedia's system to try to control the message on key articles and intimidate legitimate Wikipedia editors. Their ultimate goal is to make Wikipedia a proganda tool for the Bush Administration.

    The possibility that this was happening was first raised at the village pump.

These duplicate messages posted to the Held Desk and the Village Pump: miscellaneous, assistance, proposals, technical, policy and news.

    The discussion also leaked onto one of the key articles presided over by federal contractors, with calls for them to to stop controlling articles. The federal contractors maintain a near permanent protection on articles, claiming this is needed for vandalism reasons These claims are wholly unsupported and these articles do not face any more vandalism than any other article we legitimate editors deal with everyday. These federal contractors refuse to even allow a POV template to be placed on their protected pages as evidence here.

    Incriminating posts were eventually deleted: [5], [6].

    Confirmed list of federal contractors

    We have managed to obtain a confirmed list of federal contractors, though there are likely many others: These US federal government representative regularly engage in policy and guideline violations; participate in endless disciplinary actions and dutifully preside over several articles to ensure they present what they call "the official view". The federal contractors also coordinate efforts in administrative actions to create the appearance of a quick-forming consensus.

    There may be many more. These are merely the confirmed contractors. Examinations of their contributions will provide ample evidence of disruptive and intimidating behavior. However, some notable administrative actions include:

    This is only a partial list of frivolous and arbitrary administrative actions taken by these federal contractors who have managed to raise themselves up to powerful positions in Wikipedia: in order to maintain a slanted POV for Whitehouse officials. .

    Policy and guideline violations

    These federal contractors routinely violate and show utter contempt for these Wikipedia policies:

    Satirical pieces

    A satirical sexual news item was posted about these contractors, but that too was quickly deleted in a very extended [edit war on December 1 2006.

    Identifying tainted articles

    We had sought to identify articles tainted and suspected as tainted by Federal contractors. By including a new category [[Category:USEBACA]] to indicate an article is confirmed or suspected of being a United States E'xecutive Branch Agents. Controlled Article. However, the federal contractors would not even allow the creation of this wikipedia category.

    Dangers to Wikipedia

    Proposed Clown Essay

    (this is just to help protect Wikipedia legally)

    Key Wikipedia articles are guarded by agents of the United States Federal Government: referred to as Clowns here on Wikipedia. Other encyclopedic content must be written from a neutral point of view, representing views fairly, proportionately and without bias. However, these key articles are exempted from this. Also the clowns themselves are exempted from the policies and guidelines of Wikipedia, the United States Constitution and the norms of a civilized society. The term Clowns is typically capitalized as a title of disrespect.

    Identifying Clowns

If the editor persists in making changes to the article they will quickly exhibit their renown cowardice by charging the editor with violating the Three Revert Rule (3RR).

    Identifying circus rings

    Circus rings (or key articles for US authority intervention) are most easily spotted by the prevalence of Clowns: claims that an article is stable, reflects consensus, etc.

    When encountering a circus ring, we ask that editors add the category: [Category:USEBACA]] to both the article and the discussion page. Categories may be added anywhere though customarily to the bottom of a page. This indicates that the article is composed and controlled by United States executive branch authorities.

    Dealing with Clowns

    Whatever you do, DO NOT feed the Clowns

    Contributing time to Wikipedia is one thing. However, contributing money is highly unadvised. Wikipedia’s “Don'’t ask, don’t tell’ policy regarding Clowns means that it is endorsing the acts of representatives of the lion’s share of the United States Government: over $1 trillion dollars per year. This is a sum greater than the combined budgets of all other militaries worldwide. Wikipedia will not go away if you do not contribute your own money. There is an abundance already in the United States Federal budget. DO NOT FEED THE CLOWNS

    NEWSFLASH! Minutemen exposing federal authorities propagandizing on Wikipedia reaches

    The Miniutemen

Include the red [[Category:goodbye-clowns]] category on your user talk page. The Whitehouse will never allow us to create a category and turn that category blue, but let it stay red in defiance!

    Lessons in the Constitution of the United States of America for Clowns

    Clowns believe they are working for America. However consider this. For Clowns to be working for America, Congress would have to pass a bill enacting their program. However in 1791 the US Constitution was amended to say: “Congress shall make no law […] abridging the freedom of […] press”. So as you can see, Congress would have to make a law to enable Clowns. Yet Congress has no authority to make Clowns. You can see the problem here.
