Summary

January

The new decade began as 2009 did, with many of the most popular songs of 2009 re-entering the top 40 due to the iTunes gift card effect, including Lady Gaga's "Poker Face", the biggest seller of 2009, which re-entered at No. 32. Lady Gaga's then-current single "Bad Romance" also reaped the benefits, climbing 2 places to reclaim the No. 1 spot it lost two weeks earlier to Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name" (which dropped from No. 2 to No. 40). This makes Lady Gaga the only female artist so far in British chart history to have number one singles in the 2000s and 2010s decades, as well as becoming only the second female artist in the 21st century to have two separate runs at No.1 with the same single. Kesha's "TiK ToK" also reached a new peak of No. 4, while the only new entry in the top 40 came at No. 22 for Wiley and Chew Fu's "Take That". The next week, the first sales week to count to the new decade, started on a high with a brand new top 2, both from débuting acts. Iyaz's début single "Replay" went to No. 1 on sales of over 106,000, with Sidney Samson and Wizard Sleeve's "Riverside (Let's Go!)" coming in second with 97,000. Florence + The Machine, as a result of a big boost in promotion, reached a career high in the singles chart, her cover of "You Got The Love" going to No. 5, as well as a belated new entry from Dog Days Are Over at No. 23. Her album also returned to a 6th week at peak No. 2, after a resurging Sunny Side Up by Paolo Nutini. Later in the month, a number of songs from newly imported American TV series Glee entered the charts, with signature song "Don't Stop Believin'" reaching a peak of No. 2 in early February, whilst the original version by Journey remained in the top 10, having peaked at No 5. Iyaz's two week reign at the top of the charts was ended by Owl City's debut single, "Fireflies" which had previously entered at #2 a week previously. Previous X Factor contestants Alexandra Burke and JLS both returned to the top 10 in January, with "Broken Heels" and "One Shot" peaking at No. 8 and No. 6 respectively. The Saturdays single "Ego" peaks at number 9 with the single later turning silver. On 12 January, Ringo Starr released his newest album, Y Not. On 27 January, Scottish Indie rock band The Shermans announced their split.
