Chronology
Predecessor

The Toyota Corolla (E210) is the twelfth generation of the Corolla. It is based on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform.

Variations

Hatchback

The twelfth generation Corolla in hatchback body style was unveiled as a pre-production model in March 2018 at the Geneva Motor Show as the Auris.[6] The Auris nameplate was discontinued across Europe in January 2019,[7][8] but the nameplate has been used in Taiwan from September 2018. The Taiwanese Auris is propelled by the 2.0 petrol engine and CVT transmission. It is equipped with VSC, TRC, HAC, Head-Up-Display, Push Start, and Smart Entry.[9]

USA

The North American production version of the Corolla Hatchback was unveiled on 28 March 2018 at the New York International Auto Show for the 2019 model year.[10] Model grades are SE and XSE. The North American Corolla Hatchback is powered by the new 2.0-litre Dynamic Force engine mated to 6-speed intelligent manual transmission, or CVT with physical 1st launch gear and 10-speed simulated gear. The US market SE and XSE models[11] are equipped with Entune 3.0[note 1] infotainment system and standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.0.[12]

UK

The twelfth generation Corolla Hatchback is built in the UK and features a new 2-litre, 134 kW (180 bhp) hybrid drivetrain along with a less powerful 1.8-litre, 91 kW (122 hp) drivetrain. Standard petrol engines are also available, one of them will be a 1.2-litre turbocharged engine. However, diesel engines will not be used. It has a rigid Toyota TNGA platform. Production of the European market Corolla Hatchback began on 14 January 2019, and sales began in the UK in February 2019.[13]

Japan

The Corolla Hatchback is sold in Japan as the Corolla Sport, which was launched on 27 June 2018.[14][15] It is sold exclusively at Corolla Store dealerships equipped with T-Connect available with the 2018 Crown. Motive power for the Japanese Corolla Sport comes from the 1.2-litre turbo gasoline engine, or 1.8-litre Hybrid motor. Trim levels are the base G"X", G, and G"Z".

Australia

The Corolla Hatchback was launched in Australia on 7 August 2018 and is available in three model grades, Ascent Sport, SX and ZR. All models are powered by a 2.0 L engine. The 6-speed manual transmission is only available as standard on the base model Ascent Sport, but it is also available as a CVT, while CVT is standard on the mid-level SX, and top-of-the-line ZR. The 1.8 L engine with hybrid drivetrain is also available for all model grades.[16] Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa are not available.

Station wagon

The station wagon variation of the Corolla, called the Corolla Touring Sports, was unveiled at the 2018 Paris Motor Show.[17][7][8] The official images of the Corolla Touring Sports were revealed on 4 September 2018.

Sedan

The sedan variation of the Corolla was unveiled simultaneously on 15-16 November 2018 in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, United States and in China at the 2018 Guangzhou International Motor Show. The model is sold in 2 versions: Prestige and Sporty.[18][19][20][21][22][23]

Prestige

The Prestige model uses a different front fascia, which is more similar to the XV70 Camry. This version will be sold in China (as the Corolla), Europe and other countries. The first Prestige model sedan rolled off the assembly line at Toyota's Sakarya plant in Turkey on 28 January 2019.[3] The Prestige model sedan was launched in Turkey on 13 February 2019, and sales began on the following day.

Sporty

The Sporty model uses a similar front fascia to the hatchback and wagon versions. This version will be sold in North America, Japan, China (as the Levin (Japanese: トヨタ・レビン, Toyota Rebin)) and other countries. The Chinese-spec model will get an onboard Data Communication Module, one of the features under the Toyota Connected suite, as standard which is also available on the Corolla Sport hatchback and Crown in the Japanese market.[24]

Sales will begin in the United States and Canada in the second quarter of 2019 for the 2020 model year. Model grades for the North American Corolla are L, LE, and XLE with 1.8-litre motor, as well as the SE and XSE with 2.0-litre engine. The only gearbox for the smaller engine is CVT with physical first gear, while the bigger power source can be paired with either CVT or 6 speed manual. The Hybrid model is also equipped with CVT.

Hybrid

Europe

The Corolla Hybrid in the European market was unveiled as a pre-production model at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show as the Auris Hybrid, with the Auris name later discontinued.[25][26] The production version of the European market Corolla Hybrid in hatchback and estate (Touring Sports) variants were later revealed at the 2018 Paris Motor Show.

United States

A hybrid version of the Corolla sedan will be offered for the first time in the United States. It was unveiled at the 2018 LA Auto Show.[27] The hybrid Corolla drivetrain is mechanically almost identical to the Prius. The choice of adding a hybrid version of the Corolla in the US was to help Toyota meet CAFE standards by using a higher-volume car and that Hispanic customers prefer the Corolla to the Prius.[28]

Safety

ANCAP

The Corolla Hatchback got a 5-star safety rating by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program.[29]

  • 2018 Toyota Corolla (ANCAP):

IIHS

On October 2, 2018, the Corolla Hatchback received[30] a "Top Safety Pick Award"[31] but not a "Plus" award because of its lack of good-rated headlights.

    • Small Overlap (Driver)- Good
    • Small Overlap (Passenger)- Good
    • Moderate Overlap Front- Good
    • Side- Good
