Main Page error reports

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

• Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
• Offer a correction if possible.
• References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
• Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 23:44 on 8 June 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
• Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
• Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
• No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
• Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
• Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed, determined not to be an error, or the item has rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors in "Did you know ..."

Current DYK

The DYK on Fang Yi'ai states "his wife Princess Gaoyang was forced to commit suicide after their failed rebellion". However, there is no mention of suicide in the linked article on Princess Gaoyang, which states: "They stormed the palace but were stopped and captured. Gaoyang and her husband were executed by hanging shortly after." The only mention of a suicide on her page is the category: "Forced suicides of Chinese people". @PFHLai: I wasn't able to promote ALT1 because it hadn't been approved, but I was able to AGF approve it as it complied with WP:DYKHOOK.--Launchballer 22:16, 8 June 2024 (UTC)

The DYK on the Larmanjat guided rail system describes it as being "successfully demonstrated in England", but the demonstration system was actually built in France, according to the article itself. FourteenDays (talk) 16:29, 8 June 2024 (UTC)

The third paragraph in the Lisbon steam tramways section says Sharp Stewart delivered the first locomotive to Buckhurst Hill, Essex, in December 1872, where a length of demonstration track had been laid. Public trials were held ... Performance was satisfactory on the first day, ... Clark, Punchard were authorised to continue construction in Lisbon. According to Special:Statistics, we are nearing a billion edits as well (OK, it may take a while to make another 70 million edits - how long might that take at the current rate?). That may not be something to jump up and down about, but could be moderately interesting. Can anyone remind me if the 6 million 'article' total includes disambiguation pages? Carcharoth, if I understand correctly, any page which is A. in the main namespace and B. not a redirect counts as a content page, so disambiguation pages are counted. This is the first time I've seen animation on the main page. It is really annoying. Static images are less distracting as I'm browsing Wikipedia's home page. Androsynth (talk)

Do we really need the animation there? It seems like a waste of bandwidth and, as Androsynth said, a nuisance. Animating the eruption doesn't add anything to the image.--WaltCip (talk) 18:53, 14 January 2020 (UTC)

War On This Day

It is getting worse: today there are 2 entries on OTD relating to war.

No body is. The events are chosen more-or-less arbitrarily, with only article quality being the relevant issue. Remember, just because you notice a pattern doesn't mean there is one. Your presumption that someone has done this intentionally is a very odd assumption to make, and you've provided no evidence that it has so been done. --Jayron32 13:23, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

You can do something about it, if you choose. Take January 22 for example. You could improve the sourcing on the following articles to make them eligible for OTD:

• Republic of Mahabad
• Commonwealth of Nations
• Roe v. Wade
• R. Budd Dwyer

I concur that there isn't some hidden agenda that favours war-related items above anything else. There are a lot of articles on military history on Wikipedia, and hence plenty of quality articles related to specific days that are eligible.
