Wikipedia:Requests for page protection

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Triggafinga (talk | contribs) at 18:37, 30 July 2010 (→‎Current requests for protection). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Welcome—request protection of a page, file, or template here.

Before requesting, read the protection policy. Full protection is used to stop edit warring between multiple users or to prevent vandalism to high-risk templates; semi-protection and pending changes are usually used to prevent IP and new user vandalism (see the rough guide to semi-protection); and move protection is used to stop pagemove revert wars. Extended confirmed protection is used where semi-protection has proved insufficient (see the rough guide to extended confirmed protection)

After a page has been protected, it is listed in the page history and logs with a short rationale, and the article is listed on Special:Protectedpages. In the case of full protection due to edit warring, admins should not revert to specific versions of the page, except to get rid of obvious vandalism.

Request protection of a page, or increasing the protection level

Request unprotection of a page, or reducing the protection level

Request a specific edit to a protected page
Please request an edit directly on the protected page's talk page before posting here

    Current requests for protection

Place requests for new or upgrading pending changes, semi-protection, full protection, move protection, create protection, template editor protection, or upload protection at the BOTTOM of this section. Check the archive of fulfilled and denied requests or, failing that, the page history if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

    Tracy McGrady (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Temporary semi-protection. I'm surprised this hasn't been done since he's a relatively big-time NBA star, but recently the IP edits have gotten out of hand. There have been a few nonsense edits, but most are speculation about where he may end up. I suggest a temporary semi-protection, until at the very least he signs somewhere and the speculation ends. Triggafinga (talk) 18:37, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

List of Pakistani musicians (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Temporary semi-protection, Because somebody has to, I generally try to keep List of Pakistani musicians free of random non-notables, which it attracts a couple of times a week. Last night an IP added a huge number of non-notable unexplained redlinks. I've reverted twice with appropriate comments, been undone twice without any remark by changing IPs (obviously the same person), and have just used my 3rd revert. Requesting a week or two of semi-protection to help keep this article clean.  Glenfarclas  (talk) 18:00, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-Protection Most of the edits that I do this page is reverts. Reverting of blatant unsourced info. Requesting semi protection for at least a month or 2. QuasyBoy 16:46, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection vandalism, Excess vandalism still occurring. It's been protected about three times within this past season and when it's not sometimes I'll just pop up on the page every now and then and do huge reverts just to get rid of it all. The vandalism to this article just doesn't seem like it will ever end. . GunMetal Angel 13:31, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unprotect. Protected in contravention of the protection policy and the administrators' policy. Sceptre (talk) 14:44, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please discuss this with the protecting admin, Deb (talk · contribs · blocks · protections · deletions · page moves · rights · RfA), or at WP:ANI. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:48, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I guess you are objecting to the move and then the protect by Deb (there doesn't seem to be a move war in progress so I'm not sure why he/she protected it). Your best course of action is to discuss this with Deb (which you seem to have done) before taking the matter further. Regards.--RegentsPark (talk) 14:56, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Except, y'know, we shouldn't enforce incorrect administrative decisions. There was no move warring in the article's history, and protection should not be used to "enforce naming conventions" unless there's a history of edit warring, of which there isn't. Sceptre (talk) 15:00, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't disagree. But, it is polite to give the protecting admin the chance to reconsider his/her decision or state a reason first. Like I said above, I don't see a move war in progress so perhaps the admin will reconsider anyway. --RegentsPark (talk) 15:33, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The last move on this article was a year ago, and we seem to have a reliable source in the talk archives stating that he added the T to his name without it standing for anything, so this would appear to be a case of protection to enforce a content opinion, unless there's history I'm missing. --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 15:08, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Current requests for edits to a protected page

Ideally, requests should be made on the article talk page rather than here.

    • Unless the talk page itself is protected, you may instead add the appropriate template among {{Edit protected}}, {{Edit template-protected}}, {{Edit extended-protected}}, or {{Edit semi-protected}} to the article's talk page if you would like to make a change rather than requesting it here. Doing so will automatically place the page in the appropriate category for the request to be reviewed.
    • Where requests are made due to the editor having a conflict of interest (COI; see Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance), the {{Edit COI}} template should be used.
    • Requests to move move-protected pages should be made at Wikipedia:Requested moves, not here.
    • If the discussion page and the article are both protected preventing you from making an edit request, this page is the right place to make that request. Please see the top of this page for instructions on how to post requests.
    • This page is not for continuing or starting discussions regarding content should both an article and its discussion page be protected. Please make a request only if you have a specific edit you wish to make.

Yes, but that shows when they were deleted, not when they were made (for example, the most recent deletion was for an edit made in March 2010). There's only been one since pending changes was added, on the 28th. I've watchlisted, but I can see there's at least one other admin who seems to be covering. If it picks up, I'll protect. GedUK  12:21, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, okay. I (foolishly) assumed because I couldn't see the deleted revisions in a casual glance at the page history that it was a software thing hiding them from immediate view, not an age one. --Andrensath (talk | contribs) 12:38, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Bulbasaur (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Indefinite semiprotect: This redirect spends 99.9% of the time peacefully existing. Every once in a while, the people that feel that poor Bulbasaur is getting a raw deal log out and undo the redirect so they can deny responsibility for the edit war that invariably breaks out until the redirect gets restored. It's getting old.—Kww(talk) 04:34, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I was going to come here and support Kww, but I've never heard of this people logging out and undoing the redirect. Usually it's just me, and a couple of other hard core inclusionists from the old (and I mean old, like 2008 old) WP:FICT discussion. So, if it really is people logging out and then being nefarious, that's fine. But I don't think it is. Or maybe my non-admin tools are keeping me in the dark. Not sure. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) 04:46, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
AFAICT, the last edit to the page by an IP was back in March this year, so I don't really think semi-prot will do anything. --Andrensath (talk | contribs) 04:53, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are looking at the edit history of the wrong article or something. Today's flurry of reversions was sparked by this anonymous edit. On the 27th of March, it was this anonymous edit that sparked the flurry. That was preceded on March 9th by this anonymous edit, which sparked yet another edit war. The pattern is clear: someone that thinks the redirect should be undone logs out, undoes the redirect, and then an edit war ensues.—Kww(talk) 05:42, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure. Those IPs come from different geographic areas.[3][4][5] The edit summaries do seem to indicate some knowledge of WP, but I'm not sure a case can be made that they weren't just IP edits in good faith, who disagree with the redirect. It is kind of a famous article, being Pokemon number 1 or whatever. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) 05:57, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
