    Wikipedia logging me out

    I have tried different methods to keep Wikipedia from logging me out on chrome as every time it does it crashes the browser. Is there anyway to keep Wikipedia from logging me out a couple of times a day?Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 04:00, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Yes thanks I saw your response. The clicking stay logged in does not keep me logged in for 30 days.--Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 07:24, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    You may be focusing on the wrong issues. Are you having the same problems logging out of other sites? I found several posts by other Chrome users who are also having issues with crashing on logoff (not just on Wikipedia). It seems to be related to Chrome's built-in Flash plugin conflicting with a manually installed Flash plugin. Here's a page detailing how to disable the built-in one. You might also simply try downloading the latest version of Chrome as it seems to have fixed the issue(?).-- Obsidin Soul 20:08, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    I was recently editing a page, and put a link to facebook (this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Styn) my whole edit was taken down by the bot. I undid it and took out the fb link, as that was the only thing listed. Is the rest of it fine? I was looking over the page of another favorite author, and saw that they had a link to a facebook fan page. Is linking to that okay? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pizzamancer (talkcontribs) 04:59, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Most but not all facebook links are inappropriate. See the guideline at WP:FACEBOOK. —teb728 t c 05:47, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    The rest of the edit looks fine, adding an infobox and some referenced information. I have removed the second external link, though; the Wikipedia content guideline on External links is stricter than many editors realise. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:42, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Inserting Umlaut and Accent symbols

    How do I insert the German Umlaut symbol or the French Accent above letters when editing English text? Lankyrider (talk) 11:39, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    When editing, click on "Special characters" which is just above the edit window. You can select accented characters from there. Alternatively, you can configure your computer to allow you to type them directly. For example, on my Windows 7 PC I can press ALT-CTRL-e to get é and, with the 'language bar' enabled and Japanese installed, I can switch to hiragana and type だいじょうぶ. The input methods will depend upon your specific computer software.  Chzz  ►  11:43, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    Hmm, I get €. But I have my keyboard set to US International. Typing accents is then automated, e.g. type an accent sign, then the letter will produce the right character. For example, typing ' then e gives é, and typing " then o gives ö. Edokter (talk) — 12:11, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    (e/c) You can access numerous characters like this by going to the drop down menu below the save page button when you are in edit mode. See the Latin menu especially. We also have article on many characters (e.g., É, Ě, Ë) and you could bookmark the category they are in, Category:Specific letter-diacritic combinations which contains many. Maybe better, try Category:Writing system templates which contains for example {{Latin alphabet}} and {{Diacritical marks}}. These can also be placed by looking up their HTML codes. See this site.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:21, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    The method I use is to learn the ALT codes. To use these, you hold down the ALT button, type the number with the numeric keyboard and then release the ALT button, and the desired letter appears. ALT+0252 gives ü, ALT + 0223 gives ß, ALT + 0246 gives ö, etc. Mjroots (talk) 19:49, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    If you have Windows, you can also go the Character Map program. Click the square that displays the character that you want to type, and then hit the "select" button. Next, click the "copy" button, and this will put the character into your clipboard; selecting the "Paste" command or typing "V" while holding down the Control key will paste it into your page. As well, if you want to do like Mjroots and I do with the ALT+ method, go to Character Map and select a character; if it can be typed this way, the program will have a message saying something like "Keystroke: Alt+____", where the + sign is followed by the numbers you need to type while holding down Alt. In Windows 7, that message appears in the bottom right corner of the window. Nyttend (talk) 02:24, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonshine partial undeletion request

    The reference list has been missing after two revisions after 12.35 GMT 16/12/2011. Can the page with previous reference list be restored? Many thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gobechara (talkcontribs) 13:28, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    I figured out that you don't mean the article Moonshine, you mean the article Moonshine by country.
    The problem was, you'd inserted a <ref> with no corresponding </ref> at the end of it.
    References should be placed directly after facts, within the main body-text. The system automatically lists them as numbered references. For example,

    Chzz is 98 years old.<ref> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref>

    See WP:REFB for help with that.
    I have undone your two edits, so Moonshine by country looks OK again now. Cheers!  Chzz  ►  13:39, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Labelling minors as drug addicts in Wikipedia Page

    Hi Wikipedia Help Desk,

    Reference: Vikram Varma profile page. (Advocate in Goa, India)

    Problem: User Reptozoid logged on to Wikipedia for the first time (Reptozoid has not created / edited anything in Wikipedia before) and created a very biased, libellous page for Advocate Vikram Varma who lives in Goa, India. You can see the very first page he created and contrast it with current page to see his biases.

    Today (Dec 16, 2011), Reptozoid logged on to Vikram Varma page and left the following comment

    " Fiona MacKeown and her children were recognized as regular drug users during the period of Scarlett's death and was reproached child neglect by the authorities.[4] MacKeown sold TV rights of the aftermath of Scarlett Keeling to Channel 4 U.K. for a sum of 15000 pounds.[5] "

    - Who has a right to call any children drug users on a public Wikipedia page? All these children are still minors

    - Also, why should any specific clients of any lawyer be discussed on any Wikipedia page?

    Please also check if Reptozoid is using a Proxy Server to leave such negative comments

    Please could someone fix this asap as calling children drug addicts is not only libellous, it is very immoral

    Thanks --GurgaonUser (talk) 17:51, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    You should discuss article contents on the article talk pages. Removing reliably cited information with no explanation is discouraged. (I would suggest that much of the material belongs in a possible article about the murder and not the the article about the lawyer, though.) Rmhermen (talk) 18:04, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Draft is User:Davescanlon/List of Placenames in The Meaning of Liff. – ukexpat (talk) 21:37, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    I haven't read the book, so perhaps I'm missing something, but why should this be an article? Conceptually, one could grab any one of millions of books, and make a list of all locations, or dates. I don't see much value. It is not uncommon to make a list of characters, but that seems quite different.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 16:46, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    Ok, thanks for the feedback SPhilbrick. The book is just a list of placenames, each with a humorous "definition". There are no characters (or plot), so to my mind the placenames themselves are of note in as much as the book itself is of note. Interestingly, the Wikipedia entries for some of the placenames I've already entered (e.g. Abercrave) include the Liff definition. Perhaps a Wikipedia Category might be a better fit? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Davescanlon (talkcontribs) 19:54, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    I suggest you don't create a category, as I can't imagine anyone wanting to use this book's entries as their guide for navigating the encyclopedia. Also I don't think that the "definitions" should be added to the placename articles unless, for a particular case, you can find a reliable source that has remarked on it.
    I think that a more worthwhile effort would be to improve the book article, The Meaning of Liff, since there's very little there to show that the book is notable - the guideline is at Wikipedia:Notability (books). -- John of Reading (talk) 08:36, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Is human voice contact ever allowed?

    A few specific questions follow. Over the years I have made some minor changes to Wikipedia data. You should have my IP address. I have always tried to be thorough and ethical. I need to get some initial guidance. A few minutes conversation with a human would save me hours of confusing data entry. Here are some basic questions:

    1. Is human voice contact ever allowed? Can I talk to a mentor on the telephone?

    2. Is face-to-face contact ever allowed? Is there a once a month coffee group anywhere in DuPage county, Illinois?

    3. Should I open an account? Am I signing my life away, if I do?

    4. For just one specific, I wish to add some references to the Junkers G.38 article. Is this allowed? Do you ever provide references to ink and paper books? I think you do. For me, this article is AWESOME! And you have a link to an article on the related Mitsubishi Ki-20. I have a detailed interest in this aircraft. (I don't know why?) I have a list of seven references, with page numbers. Does that type of data belong in Wikipedia?

    5. If someone would help me to get started, I think the process would be very easy. In return, a year from now, I could help others.

    Is anyone out there?

    Terry

    I don't know of any policy that would rule out 1 or 2, if you can find somebody who is willing to talk to in that way. I see banners advertising local WP get-togethers from time to time.
    As to 3: you don't have to open an account, but there are advantages in doing so.
    4: References do not have to be on-line, as long as they are in principle available to anyone who looks for them. So printed books are fine as long as they are published by reputable publishers (and not vanity presses, say, or by a company that is the subject of the article). See Template:cite book for a way to cite a printed book whether or not it is also available online. --ColinFine (talk) 00:58, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    1. If you can find someone who will talk to you there is nothing that says you can't talk to someone about WIkipedia.
    2. There are Wikipedia meet-ups where you can meet other editors face to face. I do not know if there are any near you.
    3. My thoughts yes, you should open an account. No you won't be signing your life away, you don't even need to tell anyone your real name if you don't want to. Here is some additional information, Wikipedia:Why create an account?.
    4. Not only is adding references to articles allowed, it is encouraged. And yes physical books are definitely valid sources for articles. I am not sure what type of data you are wanting to add but if you have reliable sources for the information you can either add it directly or you can discuss it on the talk page.
    If you need any help you can come back here and ask or you can ask on my talk page. GB fan 01:12, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    For #5, you may find Wikipedia:Mentorship a good starting point for general information. If you want to jump right in, see WP:AAU. You should be aware that long-term participation in Wikipedia, well after your mentorship is finished, will be expected of you. If you would prefer not to make such a commitment just yet, please be aware that mentor availability is limited, and we're trying to target users who will derive long-term benefits from them, so mentorship may not be for you. In that case, use {{helpme}} or this page as needed, and people will answer your questions. --NYKevin @897, i.e. 20:31, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Requested Article Assistance

    I would like to help at Requested_articles but I have some questions about the process. Are there any help pages or FAQs specifically for the Requested articles process? Is there anyone willing to help with my future questions about Requested articles or should I ask questions like the one below here?
    My specific questions right now are related to the request at Wikipedia:Requested_articles/Applied_arts_and_sciences#Communications for "LG Chocolate Touch (VX8575)". WP currently has an article for LG Chocolate (VX8575) with a redirect from LG Chocolate Touch. When I use the search function, typing "lg ch" is enough to show the main article in the results list. Typing further to "lg cho" gets the main article to fourth in the results list.
    I don't know how the search function works for other readers. Is there something I'm missing here? I could create a redirect to the main article but I don't know if it is needed. Also, if nothing is needed, should the request be removed from the list? class="wikitable" distorting userboxes?

    Hi all, I found something weird while playing with tables: see User:Ocirne94/Sandbox. Using class="wikitable" sends the text on 5 lines instead of four... any ideas about this strange behaviour? If it's normal, the question becomes: how can I create a table WITHOUT using wikitable, but with 1px borders just like wikitable, and without having to repeat code hundreds of times like it's repeated here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Tables#Simple_one-pixel_table_border? Thanks Ocirne94 16:02, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Dunno the answer to the alternative to wikitable question, but I found that adding {{nowrap}} around the link to the userbox fixes the distortion. - Purplewowies (talk) 16:37, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    It's purely the padding that constrains the horizontal space for text. Default padding to wikitable cells is 0.2em. However, you own padding of 4px didn't help either. Edokter (talk) — 16:42, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    The userbox is inheriting properties from the wikitable class. This also causes the vertical lines to appear in the userboxes. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 10:38, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    MiszaBot not adhering to instructions?

    On my talkpage, I set MiszaBot to archive anything older than 1 hour. Somehow it hasn't archived anything yet, although I changed the settings more than an hour ago. What could be the reason for this and how can it be fixed? Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 16:51, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Looking at Special:Contributions/MiszaBot III, it looks as if the bot is configured to fire up once a day at 12:35 (UTC) and it then spends about eight hours working its way through the alphabet, processing the letter "T" at about 19:30 (UTC). -- John of Reading (talk) 17:02, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    Okay, I didn't look at the bots contributions, but this does explain it. (Although I wonder how the bot can hit all the diverse archive settings across all pages it archives when working that way, but maybe that's just me). Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 17:08, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    User:MiszaBot/config#After you have set up archiving says: "The bot runs once a day". Archiving after 1 hour sounds odd anyway. You would often have to check the archive to see posts. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:43, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Request for feedback on new article Kalina_Yordanova

    Hi: I have created a new article about the Bulgarian athlete Kalina Yordanova and I want feedback about it; this is my first Wikipedia article and it is still on my userspace http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Ijazbof/Kalina_Yordanova

    Regards Ijazbof (talk) 19:09, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Nice start. It reads a little choppy, because there are so many short sentences and short sections, but that's not a major issue - if you can expand some of the shorter sections, it would be great. In some cases, consider combining some single sentences into a paragraph.
    Normal usage is to wikilink the first use of a term, but not subsequent uses (except in very long articles, so I removed some wikilinks, not sure If I removed all such instances. It is also usual practice to disambiguate (add a country name) when it isn't clear to the reader what city may be meant. This isn't always clear cut, but there is no need to add the country for Rome and Moscow. I thought there might be a list, but I haven't found it.
    We normally do not put a space between the punctuation and footnote, nor between footnotes. I think I cleaned all those up.
    Thanks for the contribution. --SPhilbrick(Talk) 20:41, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    You've included a number of references, which is good, but references need to be inline citations. In addition, bare urls are frowned upon, see Referencing for beginners for some help, proper referencing is both important and difficult, at first.
    You have a link to Twitter and Myspace. I think those are allowed as external links, but are not considered reliable sources so generally shouldn't be used as references (some rare exceptions, which may not apply here, but hard to tell until I see how you intend to use them.)
    You should read Notability While you have several references, a number of them do not qualify as reliable sources, so there may be need to add some.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 22:27, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Although Wikipedia:Primary Secondary and Tertiary Sources is a failed proposal, consult it for the differences between the three levels.I agree, SECONDARY is better. The division is not always clear, and it can depend on the use in some cases, but the stated concern is that you have too many primary sources, and not enough secondary. While one might think primary sources are better, they are not for our purposes.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 23:20, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    • Your first reference tells us something about "Inside Separate Worlds" but it doesn't support the claim that Max S. Gordon has been published in it.
    • The second reference is a primary reference. Possibly useful for the article, but doesn't help establish notability. We want to see what others say about Max, not what Max is saying.
    • the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th references are all articles by Max. Again, they may belong in the article to show what he has written, but they do not qualify as independent, secondary sources
    • The 7th reference is also primary and believe it or not, may be a copyright issue (I haven't looked closely, but I don't see an allowable license) However, it is worth a listen

    Tables with multiple consecutive conditional rows

    ω Awaiting I'm sorry if I broke etiquette by moving this to the bottom, but I didn't want to risk this being archived before I find a complete solution. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 02:49, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Hello, I can't figure out how to make multiple rows on a table conditional when the default for each of them is blank. In this example, Two/Three won't work because Two will have an extra line break whenever Three is absent and misalign the text. Five/Six won't work because Six won't recognize its first line break because it's before the text. Eight/Nine won't work because Nine won't recognize the line break in the default of Eight without any text in the parameter. What should I do in these cases? Thanks.

    {|class="wikitable"
    |-
    |One
    {{#if:{{{2|}}}|{{!-}}
    {{!}}Two|}}
    {{#if:{{{3|}}}|{{!-}}
    {{!}}Three|}}
    |-
    |Four
    {{#if:{{{5|}}}|{{!-}}
    {{!}}Five|}}{{#if:{{{6|}}}|
    {{!-}}
    {{!}}Six|}}
    |-
    |Seven
    {{#if:{{{8|}}}|{{!-}}
    {{!}}Eight
    |
    }}{{#if:{{{9|}}}|{{!-}}
    {{!}}Nine|}}
    |}

    Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 00:01, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    You should always start a result on the next line:
    {|class="wikitable"
    |-
    |One{{#if:{{{2|}}}|
    {{!-}}
    {{!}}Two|}}{{#if:{{{3|}}}|
    {{!-}}
    {{!}}Three|}}
    |}

    Edokter (talk) — 00:10, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    The problem with that is that it doesn't recognize that the result has started until the first character, ignoring all spaces and line breaks before the first character. It reads the {{!-}} as a pipe on the same line, and then a hyphen, giving me "|One|-", which resolves as a hyphen with the style "One" applied to the column. It then starts a new line with "|Two|-", and a third line with "|Three", resulting in this table:
    - - Three
    Is there maybe a null character that I could add at the beginning of the result that would have zero affect on the output would would let the software know to start reading the result, even if it's a space or linebreak? —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 04:12, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Template:Weather box/metrictoinch

    This template is adding an extraneous significant figure when converting millimetres to inches (for example, in the Freetown article, the rainfall figures are given to five significant figures in inches). This is mathematically and meteorologically unjustifiable. I can't see where, in this template, the extra s.f. is being added. It must be in one of the protected precision templates. Could a template expert possibly check this? Dbfirs 08:02, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    I tried to work it out but got lost too. It has something to do with {{Precision1}} which is used to decide the required precision for each row based on the precision used in the January figure provided in the city weatherbox. Now, whether this should be changed in {{Weather box}} or {{Weather box/metrictoinch}}, I couldn't tell (too many "{" characters and commented out bits to make much sense of it and no documentation for the deeper down templates). Perhaps your best bet is to bring it up at Template talk:Weather box. Astronaut (talk) 10:30, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Ah, yes, I see now that the template writers assume a fixed number of decimal places, even when this increases the number of significant figures. I can see the meteorological and metrological reasons, but it certainly looks odd to a mathematician. Dbfirs 12:46, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    A personal appeal

    To whom it may concern:

    Hi, I am a graduate student at Claremont Graduate University in southern California. I am studying social psychology and cannot help but notice your personal appeals that head every page on wikipedia. I noticed that a few months ago you had "personal appeals" heading various wikipedia pages, and the appeals would vary in size, font, words, picture, and source (author, founder, editor, etc.).

    As a social psychologist, I am very curious about these appeals. Are you conducting a study to determine which appeals people read more? Less? Are you just throwing together appeals and airing them randomly? Was the first round of appeals to determine the size and layout of the appeal (font, picture to the left, etc.)?

    This is only curiosity, but I'd love to know. I use your website a lot, and I would really appreciate just knowing if there is anything more behind the appeals. I'm not asking for specific information if you are conducting an experiment. I really just want to know if this is an experiment or not. Unfortunately, there's a good chance they'll refer you to the usurpation process, which basically entails creating an interim account (with a different name like "GrrlScientist2"), editing for a while (the process is not officially available to brand new accounts, to ensure that popular names are actually used), and then usurping the old account (the old account gets renamed to something else, and then your account is renamed to the old account). I do hope they're able to just give you the all-one-case name, and you should wait for official word from them, but they might not, and I'm sorry for that. --NYKevin @224, i.e. 04:22, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    What to do about persistant IP vandalism

    Earlier today I reported an IP editor for continuing their vandalism after being warned. They have been now been blocked, but the more I investigated the more I found. I was thinking of statring a sockpuppet investigation but it is now getting quite large. In all, I think I have identified over a dozen different IP addresses going back 8 months. They have a persistant methodology covering a small subject area (changing the heights of mountains, de-wikilinking some terms, removing references, and a few other things). They either wait for the block to expire or simply get a different IP address from their ISP and do another bunch of edits to waste the time of the dedicated volunteers here. Can a longer block be obtained covering an IP range, or could an edit filter be set up to combat this? Astronaut (talk) 16:09, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    If certain pages are regularly targeted they can be semi-protected to prevent IPs from editing them. Requests can be made at WP:RFPP. Mjroots (talk) 16:16, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    While the vandal has a liking for vandalising the I Shouldn't Be Alive article (408 edits from 48 different IP addresses since March!), they have branched out to mountains, tall buildings, lists of mountains, mountaineers, and some other areas - perhaps because I Shouldn't Be Alive has been protected 4 times since July. Article Edited - Removed Dup Section

    HI;

    I edited this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhubarb to remove a duplicate section "Pests" was listed twice, but must of the information in that section belonged in the Toxicity section. I moved the appropriate information to the Toxicity section.

    The article says it is part of the Wiki CD, so I just wanted to see if someone can take a look at the page and see if what I edited looks okay.

    Thanks Jamie --Jamiedolan (talk) 18:17, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Thank you for your correction and for pointing this out here. Another editor had made this inept edit. You repaired part of it, and I repaired the rest (and while at it removed the other editor's linkspam.) —teb728 t c 06:32, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    What did I do wrongly?

    In this edit, I attempted to give the Barnstar of Good Humor, so I copied {{subst:The Barnstar of Good Humor|message ~~~~}} from WP:BARN and then replaced "message" with my message. Unfortunately, nothing appeared that I'd typed in the "message" parameter appeared, so I had to add it separately. What did I do wrongly? Nyttend (talk) 21:43, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    It's because your message contained an equals sign. The parser thought that you were trying to pass a parameter with the strange name "For [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff" and the strange value "466472796 this] funny yet pointed reminder.".A workaround would be to write {{subst:The Barnstar of Good Humor|1 = message ~~~~}} so that the parser knows you are trying to set the value of parameter 1. A trap for the unwary. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:56, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Inclusion of source in an appropriate format acceptable in Wiki

    I inserted a website address as a documented source for verification purposes and it was rejected as inappropriate for an encyclopedia. How can this source be accessed for inclusion as a reference into the body of a Wiki entry? Papalinton (talk) 01:34, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    This appears to be the edit in question. The deletion was made by an automated account, User:XLinkBot. That bot automatically deletes edits by new users to web sites that are usually inappropriate as sources on Wikipedia. Since the website linked to, WordPress.com is a web hosting service that does not supervise the content posted by its subscribers, the contents of that site seldom meet Wikipedia's guideline on identifying reliable sources. Since the goal of the edit seems to be to show the subject of the article is notable, the citation should be to a reliable, independent source. How are we supposed to know if the apparent author of the web site, Steve Caruso, is considered an authority on anything? Jc3s5h (talk) 01:59, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Suggestion for a way to collect a lot more money

    You have to advertise or die. We get it. However, the ads at the top of every page searched soon become a screaming pain in the butt. I paid in a healthy sum right at the start of the campaign in the hopes the ads would then stop. They didn't. These are computers we are using, not televisions: Unlike PBS, you can do things like serving ads only to those people who have failed to donate. Let people know you will turn off the advertising if and when they pay, and a lot more people will donate money. They will do so early on, ending the campaign quickly and successfully. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Toghome (talkcontribs) 01:54, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Logged-in users can suppress the banner in My preferences -> Gadgets. If you aren't logged in we can't tell that you are only one person. Also we often use "ads" here to mean accepting commercial advertising which we have never done in our ten years. Soliciting for donations is something else entirely. If an article is referenced with a link(s) to pages that require membership, are they still considered to be reliable02:18, 19 December 2011 (UTC)02:18, 19 December 2011 (UTC)~~ sources? Is there a special tag that should be added to the article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pirhounix (talkcontribs)

    It depends very much on what source you're referring to. Is it a newspaper website behind a paywall, for example? Or a journal that requires membership to view the full article? We need more details. UltraExactZZ Said ~ Did 02:22, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    Membership requirements are irrelevant as far as our reliable sources guidelines go. Many freely-accessible webpages are considered unreliable, while pages from some membership-required websites, such as JSTOR for example, are pretty much always considered reliable. At the same time, of course, membership requirements don't make something more reliable; a membership-only section of a privately-hosted website isn't reliable, but this freely-available article from ABC News is surely reliable. Nyttend (talk) 03:11, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    Membership requirements are highly relevant. If "membership" means having paid a fee that any member of the public is allowed to pay, and the fee has some plausible correlation to the value of the publication, fine, it's essentially the same as buying a newspaper at a news stand. But if membership means espousing the views of the organization that operates the web site, then the information is not published and we can't use it. For example, I can't cite American Red Cross (ARC) internal web sites because one would have to volunteer for the ARC, submit a medical form, and sign a code of conduct before one could access the web site. Only registered users can upload files. You would have to sign up for an account, and furthermore, then make at least ten edits and wait four days before you could do so. There is a link for uploading files in the toolbox dropdown menu on the left hand side of the page in the awful default vector skin that was foisted on us all about a year ago (it used to be unhidden). Having said this, if the image you wish to upload is under a free-license (even for commercial use) or is in the public domain, you should upload it instead to the Wikimedia Commons, so that all projects have access to the image (sign up). User Reptozoid violating Wikipedia Biography of Living Persons policy

    Hi,

    A few months ago user Reptozoid created a Wikipedia page for Advocate Vikram Varma in Goa, India

    If you check the profile

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vikram_Varma

    You will see Reptozoid has discussed and made allegations against one of Vikram's clients that totally violate Wikipedia policies of Biography of Living persons. He has left the following comment about a British Mother Fiona who currently has 3 minor children

    " Fiona MacKeown and her children were recognized as regular drug users during the period of Scarlett's death and was reproached child neglect by the authorities. MacKeown sold TV rights of the aftermath of Scarlett Keeling to Channel 4 U.K. for a sum of 15000pounds. "

    Separately, Reptozoid has used words like 'death' and 'mistress' in another case

    " Tourism Minister Micky Pacheco's involvement in the death of his mistress Nadia Torado "

    Note Reptozoid has never made any contribution to Wikipedia other than this profile page. He has specifically picked up a few legal cases and published what he thinks could harm the Wikipedia profile.

    Please could you get one of your Editors in India or UK to look into this asap

    Cary Capparelli/Mike Quigley

    Last week I asked for a correction on the public interest page named Cary Capparelli. The photo and copy information was changed to a photo of Congressman Mike Quigley and associated copy about his election.

    Wikipedia made an almost immediate correction.

    Now the photo and copy information was replaced again.

    The photo on the page named Cary Capparelli is not Cary Capparelli but Mike Quigley. The copy information is not about Cary Capparelli.

    Please Wikipedia please correct and change back to its original correct format or do away with this page completely. Illegible graph

    In Kansas#Demographics, the code [[File:USA Kansas age pyramid.svg|thumb|300px|[[Population pyramid]]]] displays a double bar graph that is difficult to read, because the text between the two columns of bars is not properly scaled down. However in pl:Kansas the same image is used in an infobox, where it displays correctly. You've not created an article. All that you have created is your user page. Before you try to move that to mainspace as an article, it would need some improving; in particular it doesn't currently include any references. Try reading WP:Tutorial, WP:1st, and WP:Referencing for beginners. Each of those has links to other useful pages. You have a number of inline external links, so they will need removing, and perhaps replacing by references, see WP:EL. - David Biddulph (talk) 18:04, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    More importantly, some (at least) of the material on that page appears to be a copyright violation from http://provincialadvocate.on.ca/main/en/what/ . If that isn't addressed immediately, the material (and perhaps the whole page) is liable to be deleted, as copyright violation is a serious legal matter. - David Biddulph (talk) 18:10, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    I agree that the template would be better with less visual overkill. (I remember the fierce TfD discussions we had a couple of years ago, when equally small smiley pictures for talk pages were deleted with the argument that they used up too many resources.) But for consistency reasons, there shouldn't be different versions of what's essentially the same template. This needs to be changed in the template itself. If you bring it up at Template talk:External media and you can get consensus there, then I'd be willing to implement the change there. — Sebastian 09:03, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    How do I create a table for a collegiate athletics team on the right side of the page similar to UNC Women's Soccer at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unc_women%27s_soccer#cite_note-mediaguide-1 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Abwsoc (talkcontribs) 21:39, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    That's an infobox, and in that article it is Template:Infobox College Soccer Team. There are similar boxes for other collegiate sports teams, see Category:American college sports infobox templates. – ukexpat (talk) 21:53, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Question on changing page name and more

    If i change a page name does it still keep all the number of watchers. And on the movie articles on the plot summary is there always a limit to adding new info to it on every movie or just certain ones. If it does not allow you to add more info to plot summary than maybe it should have a show more box like it always has on the bottom of articles so wikipedia won't be worried about it getting to big. Plus most people probably watched all notable thriller movies so by having a huge plot that contains spoilers wont hurt them especially on the see more box. A lot of movie articles have a lot more information on it than the plot like commercial analysis on Titanic (1997 film). I would love to add more plot info to King Kong (2005 film) and Mighty Joe Young (1998 film). What if I cant find any movie related plot references to back up the newly added plot info. Is it possible to list any info on the gorilla's physical traits and attributes of king kong or mighty joe young on how it could of got that colossal size like certain genome genes or hormones/ diet. Or add how fast regular gorilla monkeys move/swing and interact similar to joe or kong. Example some scientist proved that gorilla's can bench at least 2000 pounds now by comparing real gorilla's and kongs body weight and movie scenes of kong throwing stuff that that could be a clue of how heavy it was and it estimates how strong he is, is that aloud to be put into the article. The movie might not explain that stuff but what if another website did that is part of the movie makers and not just a random site. Shawn Worthington Laser Plasma (talk) 21:46, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    See Help:Moving a page. As for the plot summary, it is a good idea to keep it from getting too long, so that a reader can scan it for major points rather than all minor details. Make sure to avoid original research concerning such "facts" about a movie, as they must be sufficiently relevant and cited. ~AH1 (discuss!) 02:21, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Feedback

    I have created a new article in my draft area but I would appreciate some feedback before thinking about going live.

    You're more likely to get feedback if you tell us where the article is, or even help us find it by signing your question (use four tildes - ~~~~ - and Wikipedia will replace that by your signature. --ColinFine (talk) 23:45, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    I assume you mean User:MickPhillips/Joseph Phillips (English Actor)
    It has zero references. All new biographies of living people require at lead one reference.
    You might want to start with Wikipedia:Your first article in particular, Notability, as it is very important. You might also want to read WP:COI, but that's just a guess.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 00:59, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Colin,

    thanks, yes your assumption was correct about my new article being User:MickPhillips/Joseph Phillips (English Actor). I have replied to the other, more extensive feedback you gave me on my other questions. I think I've added appropriate references but I've put them in the External links area, not sure how to put them in the References area.

    Regards, Mick. MickPhillips (talk) 13:32, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    It's coming along but at the moment, among other things, there are too many bare external links within the text of the article. If you want to use these as references, please read WP:Referencing for beginners for assistance with correct formatting. – ukexpat (talk) 14:18, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Hi
    I am kumaran thirunavukkarasu and the information about me in your article his incorrect. your article says i left cricket after one year after my injury. i continued playing and even played in the ICL for the chennai superstars and got a record 6 wickets against mumbai champions in my debut.I was the best bowler for the first two ICL tournaments.so kindly do the needful to change my article.

    United States Youth Volleyball League

    Why do you have AYSO, Little League, but you keep deleting USYVL? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.80.56.210 (talk) 00:41, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    The United States Youth Volleyball League article had zero references. The Little League Baseball is richly referenced. The American Youth Soccer Organization wouldn't be a good model. While it exists, it has multiple problems, and if not addressed, it may go away. There's more to it than that, but the United States Youth Volleyball League article is a long way from being acceptable. --SPhilbrick(Talk) 00:56, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    A problematic move

    An editor moved Thai basil to Asian basil because "Asian is more neutral". The vast majority of references to this plant call it Thai basil (1,330,000 ghits as compared to 71,000 for Asian basil). Thai basil has been here since 2005. As far as I'm aware, there has never been a discussion about moving it until this move was done. WP:Bold aside, this was not an appropriate move. Would an admin revert it, please? A suggested RM would probably be in order thereafter. I'd be happy to make the suggestion to the editor who did the move unless someone else prefers to do so. Waitak (talk) 04:44, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

     Done Going against WP:COMMONNAME like this is clearly a contentious move, so I reverted it and left a note on the editor's talk page suggesting following WP:RM. --Born2cycle (talk) 04:50, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Welcome to Wikipedia. Our guidelines for biographies of living people are quite strict, and require adequate third-party sourcing. Since your website is a primary source, its content is not suitable for inculsion on Wikipedia. In addition, you should read WP:Autobiography for an explanation of why we rarely accept biographical details supplied by the subject.
    Furthemore, unless your website is published under a Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License, you would need to follow the instructions at Donating copyrighted materials in order for its text to be included. Yunshui  12:32, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    If an image is at Wikimedia commons then it can be used by all the language-specific Wikipedias; it doesn't need to be moved or copied. -- John of Reading (talk) 14:13, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    New users sometimes confuse Wikipedia ("p" in the middle and cannot have "Commons" at the end) with Wikimedia Commons ("m" instead of "p"). Images uploaded to a Wikipedia language can only be used at that Wikipedia language. Some images have licenses which don't allow upload to Wikimedia Commons. Where is the image? Linking

    Is it kosher to have a wikilink that takes you to a different section within the same article? WP:LINK, which I quickly looked at, doesn't really address it except possibly "Do not link to a page that redirects to the page the link is on." The link is here at the phrase "continued his education". It's sort of helpful but could cause problems later if the article is changed and the link is impacted.--Bbb23 (talk) 16:56, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Problem with WCQL-FM article

    To whom it may concern, My name is Darrin Anderson and I work for Regional Radio Group in Glens Falls New York. Our small cluster includes WCQL-FM Queensbury NY. We are still known as HITS 95.9, but our slogan has changed from "Your Music, Your Station" to "Your Music Station" We are no longer affiliated with Dial Global who owns the "Your Music, Your Station" slogan. Our owner was just informed that because the "Your Music, Your Station" still shows up on various websites, we are committing a copyright violation. Dial Global has fined our company and is threatening further legal action unless we fix this issue. I tried editing it myself, but I couldn't. Please, if you could correct this ASAP it would be much appreciated. Here is the link to your page about our station:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WCQL

    It is right in the info bar on the side, under the slogan. If you need further proof of this before you make the change, here is the link to our website for the station:

    http://www.radiowins.com/wcql/INDEX.ASP

    I cannot stress enough how important this matter is. We need this fixed as soon as you can. Thank you for your cooperation

    |format= in cite report

    In Hurricane Debra (1959), should the usages of {{cite report}} use the |format= parameter for GIF images even though the reports were originally published in 1959? Thanks. HurricaneFan25 — 17:43, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    I think so. Looking at the ordering and indentation of the fields at Template:Cite report/doc#Description of parameters, it's clear that the writer of the documentation intended "format" and "accessdate" to describe the "url" parameter. So if the URL is a GIF then you should say so. -- John of Reading (talk) 19:03, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Chzz whinging again

    A personal appeal from Chzz

    Hi, helpdeskers. Please please help with articles for creation. I'm begging here.

    This morning, at about 6AM, there were about 350 AFC's. I dealt with those plus the new ones, and got the backlog reduced to zero. That's good, because when there are so few, users get timely feedback - and that makes a huge difference. But, it's creeping back up...

    AFC is easy; If the article isn't likely to be be deleted - make it live. Just move it, and tidy it up.

    If it's not good enough but could be fixed - fix it, or tell 'em what is needed.

    If it's unacceptable, edit the page and add a letter "d". Change {{AFC submission|| to {{AFC submission|d| - that's it. And please tell the creator why.

    Of course, more help to the new user would be great, but, that's the essence of it. Please help out. Thanks!  Chzz  ►  18:46, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Feedback on draft page

    I published a page on the Bourne Society that was promptly deleted because of copyright infringement. Quoting the log message: "20:23, 19 December 2011 Fastily (talk | contribs) deleted "Bourne Society" ‎ (G12: Unambiguous copyright infringement of http://www.bournesociety.org.uk/bournesoc/about-us.html)"

    I understand why the deletion was made so have now recreated the page afresh in my user space (User:Inspeximus/Bourne Society) doing my utmost to avoid any copyright infringement and my best to adhere generally to other guidance on first article creation.

    I would now like to have your feedback on the draft - I see that the standard "Requests for Feedback" process is now inactive so am submitting it here for review.

    Inspeximus (talk) 21:17, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    My initial view is that the references that you have cited do not demonstrate the notability of the subject. Please take a look at WP:ORG and WP:RS for guidance on notability and the kind of sources that are required to show it. – ukexpat (talk) 21:24, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    The page does not comply with some guidelines in spots, including: WP:CAPS, WP:LOWERCASE, WP:MOSHEAD, WP:LEAD, and WP:REFPUNCT. Specifically:
    • A reference should generally come after any punctuation, without any intervening space or hard returns.
    • Section headings should follow the same letter case convention as article titles (second and following words should begin with lowercase characters except when they would normally be capitalized; e.g. Other Publications should be Other publications).
    • In the lead section, bold the first instance of the page title that appears in a sentence. Do not repeat the title separately as a pseudo-title followed by an ellipsis.
    • Don't type the name in all caps (THE BOURNE SOCIETY) in context unless that is how it would always appear.
    • I agree that the references might not establish the notability of the subject, and a search with Google for: Bourne Society does not produce many high-ranked results that might meet Wikipedia's criteria for reliable sources that are independent of the subject. You could help by persuading some journalists to write about the society in their publications.
    Also read WP:LAYOUT carefully. That's one of the most important guideline pages when you're writing a new article from scratch. --Teratornis (talk) 22:05, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
