Links in an email of a change in an article

Don't know if you can help. When a notice is emailed and it's involves a Disamb name, in this case Kevin Ware (basketball), and you click on:

See http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kevin_Ware_(basketball)&diff=0&oldid=548058195 for all changes since your last visit.

I think these links should take you to the right page and NOT

Kevin Ware

I am sure this a just a glitch in the system and can be fixed easily. Thanks for looking into. Kennvido (talk) 00:10, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Clicking on http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kevin_Ware_(basketball)&diff=0&oldid=548058195 takes me right to the "show changes" page for that page (Shows quite a few changes, of which some are details being removed and others are questionable things being added without a lot of references). Wikipedia sends plain text mails and not html mails. There are good reasons for that. A plain text mail can only contain a plain text url with no link formatting. If the url is clickable for you then it is your mail software which tries to indentify url's in plain text and make them work as links. Your mail software probably guesses that url's end at parentheses so it shortens http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kevin_Ware_(basketball)&diff=0&oldid=548058195 to http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kevin_Ware. You can copy-paste the url to your browser instead. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:26, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Selfridge ANG Base Air Show in 1979

I am a retired USAF Vet. and I am trying to find out what month the Air Show was on at Selfridge ANG Base in 1979?. I have been looking for a long time and I have yet to find an answer. Please help me with this.

Thank you very much in advance.

There's an on-base museum. You could contact them and see if one of the volunteers knows. http://www.selfridgeairmuseum.org/. Next time, ask at WP:RD. The help desk is for questions on how to use Wikipedia. RudolfRed (talk) 05:25, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You might also ask (email) <ruchniat@comcast.net>, who has pictures from the show on his site here. That was just the first of a ton of results from this Google search. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 05:32, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Editing templates

So I'm here just want to ask how I edit Singlechart because I wanna add Creative Disc to it. Can I? Ggdlmnt (talk) 08:04, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You would need to ask Kww; it is a grotesque template.--Launchballer 14:09, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
According to the editnotice for the page (at Template:Editnotices/Page/Template:Singlechart, it is *not* grotesque, it is hideously complex. There *is* a difference. (I just don't know what it is. :) :) :) ).Naraht (talk) 15:23, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It might be better to leave a note in Template_talk:Singlechart and then put a Template talk:Singlechart on kww's talk page. He's added new countries in the past, there is a thread on the template talk page about adding in Poland.Naraht (talk) 15:28, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Using Text from or Own Organization's Web Page

Hello,

The Sophia Smith Collection, a women's history archive, would like to create articles on Wikipedia about the notable women whose papers reside in our collection. We wanted to do this by using the text from our finding aids - which we own the copyright to - as text for the article.

However, when we recently attempted to save an article on Dorothy Hamilton Brush, we were told we could not copy-paste information from other website. We understand and respect the need for articles to be original. However, since we own the copyright information to the text that we have copy-pasted, we were wondering if we could make it clear in some way that we are not plagiarizing, but publishing our own original information.

Thank you, The Sophia Smith Collection — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sscwmhist (talkcontribs) 14:42, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:Donating copyrighted material. - David Biddulph (talk) 14:45, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And also note that even if the copyright issue is resolved, the material may still not be suitable for Wikipedia if, for example, the tone is too promotional. And, notability is determined by references to multiple reliable sources.--ukexpat (talk) 15:21, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'll note that this is an apparently scholarly, curated collection of documents and photos in support of women's studies at Smith College, which, on spec, would be considered a reliable source, IMO. If the copyright issue is resolved, it would seem to be of substantial benefit to Wikipedia to not only have access to the images, but also some dedicated historians in the field working on our articles. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 17:42, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I agree it would be a valuable addition to Wikipedia. I was merely cautioning that fixing the copyright issue isn't necessarily the end of the possible issues.--ukexpat (talk) 18:57, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Now admins have blocked the account per WP:ORGNAME (instead of maybe negotiating a new name to be moved to ).
@Sscwmhist: please see my comment at User_talk:Sscwmhist#Ruth Frances Woodsmall. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 06:02, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I thoroughly agree on the issue of the collection's websites being reliable sources. Archivists at my university have the authority to give permissions and release rights; if Smith College's archivists have the same authority, I expect that we would be satisfied with something like "The people using accounts ___, ___, and ___, have the authority to copy content from any of our web pages and release them under CC-by-sa-3.0 and GFDL". I've left some comments about the WP:GLAM process and asked them to do their best to be unblocked properly. Nyttend (talk) 14:48, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think this would be an ideal case for a template specific to this organisation acknowledging the license pursuant to which the material is being released. If the permission is communicated to OTRS we will review it quickly to avoid any copyvio problems. There are a few donation-specific templates that someone could use as a model for something similar here.--ukexpat (talk) 15:15, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

First time edit/problem with ; see the help page. Can u advise where I put <ref>??

For example,'After they broke up in June of 2007, Jodi Arias moved to Mesa, Arizona. <ref>http://www.hlntv.com/article/2013/01/01/jodi-arias-travis-alexander-killer-romance<ref>

This right? Your help is greatly appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SrGertrudeHarmon (talkcontribs) 17:50, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've put some nowiki tags in here to make this question & subsequent ones visible. Without the nowiki tags, the unterminated ref tags make further material unreadable. - David Biddulph (talk) 18:29, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nacho Cano

Nacho Cano

I am the personal assistant for Nacho Cano of Spanish pop music band Mecano. We are trying to update his article and have been thwarted several times because we lack references. Is there a way to reference things in his article that are from interviews I've had with him or are things that are not in published articles elsewhere? The article has gone through various phases of authenticity and we would both like to have a valid and verifiable article on Wikipedia. Any suggestions, comments or further questions would help me right now as I don't even totally know what I should be asking in order to accomplish this. Thank you for your help! Lcblock (talk) 18:33, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No. All your references must be published and verifiable. See WP:RS RudolfRed (talk) 18:43, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Text for a reference

I have been working on a stub article about Stanley Spencer (aeronaut). An editor on the Humanities Refdesk very kindly found a reference for me, from an old magazine at the National Motor Museum and transcribed the text onto a Userpage - User:Tevildo/MotoringIllustrated. When I quote the reference in my article, is it possible to link to the text on the Userpage, and if so, what is the best way of doing so? Alansplodge (talk) 19:47, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

First, understand that a link is not required for a published work; such a link is considered a convenience. You cannot use another Wikipedia page, especially a user page as a source. Since this particular work was published in the US before 1923, it is now in the public domain and can be transcribed to Wikisource and then linked. --  Gadget850 (Ed) talk 20:05, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And to cite it you don't even need to link to the text. Just use the appropriate cite template, in this case Cite journal.--ukexpat (talk) 20:26, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ok many thanks. I thought it would be useful to have a link to the text, as somebody trying to follow this up probably wouldn't want to visit a museum in rural England to read it. The Wikisource idea is a good one. Alansplodge (talk) 20:46, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Element Mobile

Hello,

I recently posted a request for edit to Element Mobile's talk page but my request was denied with no explanation. I am wondering if someone can assist me in finding out why this was denied and what I can do to get my changes approved.

Thank you Akbemis (talk)

You put this question at the top of the page, where few people will read it and it will soon be archived. I have moved it to here. Maproom (talk) 20:01, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
On March 7th, User:Fox Wilson replaced your request edit tag by declined Edit request content. He did not give a reason. This strikes me as unhelpful of him - rejecting a request often makes sense, but hiding it does not. I suggest you discuss it with him. Maproom (talk) 20:14, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see now why he denied your request. You wanted to downplay the company's failure to provide an adequate service, and rewrite the article in a more promotional way. He was right to deny it. But his use of Hidden still seems unhelpful. Maproom (talk) 20:27, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re-asking a question from User_talk:Sundogs/Archive_7

I have asked if it is appropriate to have a user created navigational box for user sub-pages like I have right now (see my sandbox for all pages that I am working on) and I would love to have a navigational box for these sub-pages on my user tag on Wikipedia to use for the pages that I, or anyone, is working on? Is this okay by Wikipedia standards? The replier said that there wouldn't be any objections, but, I would like an Administrations concise approval or denial of this request. Thanks Sundogs UserPage My sandbox 00:05, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As Huon (talk · contribs) explained, this is fine, provided you create the navbox as a subpage of your user page. This is an allowed use of your user space, as explained at WP:UPYES. You do not need administrator approval. For example, you could create User:Sundogs/My navbox and then use it as . There's an example at User:Sun Creator/Typos. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:08, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Question about the Novel Clean Up tag

I was on The Bourne Identity (novel) and saw the clean up tag for a novel. I stated in the talk page as I am now on this for general purposes, I have read the book many times over and came back to Wikipedia and started to look around and I saw The Bourne Identity novel has this clean up tag for a novel stating it is unclear for the reader about the plot or novel. As stated in the talk page, the plot is perfectly find and accurate and best summarize the book after re-reading the book for the upteen time. So, basically saying, may I remove the clean up tag? Feedback 03:18, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have temporarily restored them, but they will need some action from you to remain online. For the first two, are you <removed>? If not, then you will need to have them send a statement of permission to WP:OTRS. For all three, they are low-resolution and blurry, so unless they are used in articles, they are subject to deletion. Please add them to articles where you wish for them to be used. -- King of 04:48, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Toledo Mud Hens

I was reading the article about former players for the Toledo Mud Hens. I am positive that my grandfather, Kenny Grimes, brother of Ray and Roy, cousin of Oscar, and relative of coach, Burleigh, played for the Mud Hens. The best place to ask this question is the article talk page. Users who know this subject would be editing there and not necessarily see this post at all. Mlpearc (powwow) 05:31, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
A Google search finds three entries one of which indicates he played short stop. The results are to articles at newspaperarchive.com which are by subscription. Not all people see the same text when they use Google so the shortened entry says "Kenny Grimes at short" and cuts off there, going on to other text. I can't imagine what the next word might be but "stop". Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 05:52, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The other two of your Google results, however, suggest that he was a pitcher ("Kenny Grimes did the flinging" and "Kenny Grimes did the hurling"). Perhaps he was a good enough hitter that he played shortstop on days when he wasn't pitching. Deor (talk) 15:36, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

adding omitted name to infobox re: movie Percy Jackson :Sea of Monsters

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

I added a name, but it doesn't display like the others & the message says "template does not exist." I've tried to figure out what to do to fix it, but it's beyond me. Is this something that you fix, and if not, what do I do? Esdras2 (talk) 06:15, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't show up because "visual effects" isn't part of the infobox film template. You can't just add any random field to an infobox. It has to be in the original template as an available field first. If you'd like it added to the template, the place to take up that discussion would be at Template talk:Infobox film. Dismas|(talk) 07:29, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I would venture to suggest that a proposal to add such parameter would not succeed. We would be in danger of requests being made for every single production role which would make the ibox look like a movie's closing credits.--ukexpat (talk) 16:51, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the first thing is your username is promotional. Since you are closely related to the subject, any edits made on that "page/article" would be a conflict of interest, which requires special attention for involved editors. Out side of these issues the most common answer to your question is, If the subject is notable enough someone else will write about it. Mlpearc (powwow) 16:01, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia does not have anywhere in its purposes helping you get your product's name out: indeed, that would be seen as promotional, and specifically excluded. Is there any way other than Chick skin to have a Wikipedia article take up the whole page width?

So today this message popped up "You are using the Chick skin, which is being removed beginning on April 15, 2013. More information." I really enjoy chick skin, and use it on all my wiki sites. The main reason is that I find it much simpler to read articles, when the text takes up the width of the entire page. I don't like having reading space wasted with menus and other distractions.

I also greatly enlarge the font, which creates problems with menus bleeding into article space.

IS there any way to have articles take up the entire width of the page on one of the approved skins- Vector, MonoBook, Modern and Cologne Blue?--Gary123 (talk) 16:16, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Letter to an Anti-Zionist Friend

Hello,

I read the Martin Luther King: Letter to an Anti-ZIonist Friend article on here, and I believe it is inaccurate. Here's an article I've read debunking what's written on wiki about that.

Resolved

In the article about Eduardo Galeano biography, there is a paragraph that, next to his last name, it said Galeano "cara de ano" which is considered an insult. Replacing a .jpeg image with a .svg file

Recently, my attention was drawn to Category:Images_that_should_be_in_SVG_format, and I decided to help out. I converted a few images to svg, but when I went to upload them (file page-> file history -> upload a new version of this file-> choose file -> upload image) I received the error message: "File extension ".jpeg" does not match the detected MIME type of the file (image/svg+xml).". I tried editing the name of the file to xyz.svg instead of xyz.jpeg, but it wouldn't let me. How can I upload a new version of an image that is in a different format? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Platysvg (talkcontribs) 02:53, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If it is in a different format, then it must have a different name, and must be a different file. Upload the new version as a new file. --ColinFine (talk) 14:47, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Extremely long list in an article

Resolved

The list of notable alumni at Hollywood High School is extremely long (the actual length, not the amount of names); you'll see that it's more than twice as long as the rest of the entire article. (I'll bet it's Wikipedia's longest notable alumni list for a high school article.) I assume if it were a table, it would just need to be collapsed (with a show/hide button). But it's not a table; it's just a regular list. So can someone please turn the list into a collapsible table? I have no idea how to do it. Thanks! --76.189.111.2 (talk) 07:33, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Something has to be Wikipedia's longest notable alumni list. (I have no idea if this is or not.) Do you have a problem with who is included, or do you just think the section is too long? I don't understand why it needs to be collapsed. --OnoremDil 07:44, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(Original Research) It might well be that the most notable thing about the school is the number of notable students. (Not hard to imagine given the number of high schools that have articles just for existing.) --OnoremDil 07:47, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hollywood High is one of the most "famous" high schools in the country, but my request has nothing to do with the the names/content of the alumni list; it's solely about the length of the list; it's way too long, particularly in relation to the length of the rest of the article. And MOS says to collapse a table that's too long. I'm simply looking for an editor who knows how to transform the list into a collapsible table. --76.189.111.2 (talk) 08:29, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I know that extremely long alumni lists for large universities, for example, simpy redirect to their own articles with something like "Main article: List of ABC University alumni" in its place. But again, those are lists, not tables; and they usually are extremely long. I don't think a high school alumni list should have its own article. I just think this one just needs to be collapsed so it won't overwhelm the rest of the article, which is pretty minimal. 76.189.111.2 (talk) 08:53, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Collapsible tables are pretty easy to create, but frankly, I have neither the time nor the inclination to do so with such a huge list. However, if you fancy doing it yourself, here's the formatting you'd need (with just the first four entries):
Code entered Output produced
Click "show" to view list
Arthur Alber
Los Angeles City Council member (1912)
Anthony Anderson
actor (1988)
John Archer
actor (1933)
Meredith Baxter
actress (1965)
Mary Kay Bergman
actress (1978)

Hopefully that's fairly self-explanatory; each new addition should be formatted as:
Name of alumnus
occupation and graduation year
and don't forget the |} at the bottom. Have fun! Yunshui  09:13, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much, Yunshui. I'll do it. See, I told you it's extremely long! Haha. 76.189.111.2 (talk) 09:51, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I recommend putting the household names on the article and the rest in a separate list article.--Launchballer 10:28, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The usual procedure is to split such lists off to a separate page List of Hollywood High School alumni. Roger (talk) 11:23, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all the input. I took the guidance of the admin (Yunshui) and just spent a couple hours creating the collapsible table after marking this thread as resolved. So I just saw the additional comments. Leaving the "household" names in the article and then having a separate list elsewhere seems unnecessary and inconvenient, considering the rest of the article has so little content. And having a separate article where the list would be two or three times the length of the high school article itself doesn't seem as logical as simply having the collapsible table so that all content can be in one article. Again, this is an odd situation since there are probably very few (or no) other high schools that have as many notable alumni as this one. Obviously, some of the alumni are far more prominent than others, but all of them have their own articles and are therefore assumed [[WP:NOTE|notable]). Perhaps there are a couple whose notability might be challenged (as is the case with any long list of people), but I did a quick check of each article and did remove a couple bogus listings. Thanks again for everyone's feedback. 76.189.111.2 (talk) 12:08, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Walking distance

A number of articles state that various landmarks 'are within walking distance' of various stations, for example Benhilton church is within walking distance of Sutton Common railway station. Is there a hard and fast rule of what 'walking distance' curtails? My idea of walking distance is from my house in North Cheam to the Aldi in Selsdon.--Launchballer 10:31, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I used to do my shopping in North Cheam, many years ago... AFAIK, there's no offical measure for "walking distance", it's highly subjective. We shouldn't really be using it; it would be far better to state "landmark x is 700 yards (640 metres) from railway station y", if such a precise measurement can be sourced. Walking distance for me is about North Cheam to Ewell... Yunshui  10:37, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

HMS Waterwitch 1892

Not sure if you can help. HMS Waterwitch 1892 has been edited by persons unknown. It is major and has deleted much of context related to ships early history and to her career. Obviously if I knew who the person was I could discuss via TALK but because they do not have a logon name it is not possible. Any suggestions? I have left a message on the HMS Waterwitch TALK hoping they will correspond.

Sidpickle (talk) 13:02, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's still possible to communicate with IP editors via their talkpages (User talk:2.101.37.82 in this case); I'd suggest leaving a message there asking him to come back to the article talkpage and discuss the matter - he's already left some comments. Whilst a lot of cited content was removed, it looks as though this editor was genuinely trying to make improvements by removing what he saw as a lot of extraneous material. The focus now should be on whether any of that material merits restoration; talk it through and see if you can't reach a compromise. If you're struggling, you might want to ask for a third opinion or even take it to dispute resolution - hopefully, though, simple discussion will suffice. Yunshui  13:20, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I expect he has reverted the article to his (or her) original version. I agree it was not vandalism but a difference of what should be in the article. I tried to put in the historical context of the vessel; she was one of the first ocean going steam yachts and she was 13 years old when the navy purchased her. The history of the ship during the survey career has also been taken out and a postcard cited as source data and even the web link to this is missing. I cannot really be bothered getting into discussions with whoever. I did look for his talk page but could not find it. The work I put in was to dispel the myth (published in the original article)that the ship was the White Ladye and he seems to have accepted that this is the case so some good came out of it. Thanks Yunshui. Hope you have some sunshine. We are cold and miserable in the UK. No sign of Summer! Sidpickle (talk) 16:42, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Wikipedia:Template messages/Deletion

A tag has been placed on Wikipedia:Template messages/Deletion, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

reason

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. It looks from the above as if you are somewhat confused. If you are saying that you want the article Joe Terranova deleted, that was already done earlier today. - David Biddulph (talk) 13:57, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No, I think he's bickering about it being deleted. Mr Terranova, the article was deleted because it was a copyright infringement, it didn't indicate its importance/significance and you shouldn't be writing about yourself.--Launchballer 15:22, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Confusing indeed. The article had been around for ages and recently came up at COIN. I stubbed and tagged it as it had been a copyvio for years. Joeterranova had already blanked it and tried to place a deletion tag on it, so I felt that deletion was perhaps the best option, since there were no non-copyvio versions to revert to (other than an unreferenced stub). Subject deletion

I don't understand why my post about Bartech was deleted on April 2nd. It was written as an encyclopedia entry, was neutral in tone and mirrored another posting that Wikipedia has accepted: Manpower Inc.. Ccooper36 (talk) 13:59, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

According to the deletion log, it was deleted due to unambiguous advertising or promotion. Perhaps WP:N and WP:CORP would help you. Dismas|(talk) 14:08, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you sincerely believe that what you had added was neutral then I am afraid that you are very much mistaken - it read like a company website, which is hardly surprising seeing that large chunks were in fact copied directly from Bartech's website. As well as being unambiguous advertising, it was therefore also a copyright violation. Please do not post copyrighted material or advertising to Wikipedia again. Yunshui  14:11, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Would you please review my new submission and let me know if it meets the acceptable standards? Ccooper36 (talk) 15:02, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Here is a link for convenience: Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Bartech. Dismas|(talk) 15:05, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And again, it's too promotional in tone and most of the text is copied verbatim from sources such as this. Dismas|(talk) 15:13, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's not copywrite infringement because I was also the writer of that press release. Those are the facts - what Bartech is, when founded, number of work assignments, etc. Also, how is this entry too promotional in tone and others like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manpower_Inc. are accepted? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ccooper36 (talkcontribs) 15:45, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It is copyright infringement since the terms of that very page say it is. Copying it word-for-word is a copyright violation. Thanks and good luck Jenova20 (email) 16:04, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Statements like "has led the industry for over 35 years", "Bartech improves clients’ market position through greater quality, efficiency, cost savings and transparency" and "That vision and ambition have made Bartech into a trusted global provider and manager of large-scale teams of skilled contingent professionals", among others, are all obviously promotional in tone. They might be allowed to stand if third party, independent and reliable sources had made them, but are unacceptable as they stand. The Manpower Inc. article has one unreferenced claim that may be considered propotional (about its Employment Outlook Survey) and even that is tagged as "citation needed". Rojomoke (talk) 16:53, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Although there undoubtedly are articles which are over promotional, that is no argument for everyone else to break the rules - please see Wikipedia:Other stuff exists. If all articles are reduced to the lowest standard, we will spiral into total chaos. Arjayay (talk) 17:07, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If I delete these statements - can the rest of the submission be posted or are other corrections/edits needed? Ccooper36 (talk) 17:42, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In one word - no. Have you read 'my first article'? You need to find sources (like newspapers) that talk about the company, and it has to be neutrally written. Based on your comment on the talk page before I deleted the article, you work for the company so this is likely to be difficult for you. It might be best to consider creating a short stub only referencing independent sources first of all. As for the current draft - due to the copyright violations it needs to be deleted. If you would like any of the text back drop a note on my talk page and I can email it to you. Thanks SmartSE (talk) 19:05, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Understanding of articles

Hi. I was just wondering if there was a way that people who write these articles could write them in lay-mans terms. I can tell they are full of information, but i lose my head when I'm trying to understand what it is I am reading. So if people could please start taking into consideration the "HOW" of how to write their articles then I think Wikipedia could be a lot more useful to people from ALL blocks of life. Thank-you.

Or any of the other languages if you're not fluent in English. Roger (talk) 17:28, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You are right, but there is probably no way to achieve this. Wikipedia is edited by thousands and thousands of people, some of whom are good at writing clear jargon-free text, and others who are not. Also, many articles are on subjects which are rather specialised, and it is very difficult (and possibly unhelpful) to write them in a way that the non-specialist can understand - I would hope that an article which was an overview of a subject would be clearer, but if you're describing a very specialised and details aspect of a field, it might make the article very long and repetitive to explain every time in layman's language, rather than linking other articles.
But more can probably be done, particularly in making the lede of articles more approachable. You are welcome to simplify articles if you think you can, and you are not losing anything important from an article. --ColinFine (talk) 17:54, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I tagged this article: GNU C-Graph for CSD and now one of the two creating users (who I have reason to believe are the same person) is accusing me of having some sort of agenda. The two users are clearly affiliated with the company, the usernames are User talk:Visionat, User talk:Adriennegt, and IP 72.252.229.15. All three appear to be the same person, the creator of the software, Adrienne Gaye Thompson, as listed on the article itself. "adriennegt" is clear enough and "visionat" is the word "vision" followed by the initials of her first and last names. The IP is assumed to be associated since those three are the only contributors to the article. The accusations against me can be found at Talk:GNU C-Graph and User talk:Visionat. Why are women being moved into a women's sub catgory but therre s no men only category

Novelists categories Category:Scottish women poets and Category:Scottish women novelists seem to be created so that the main categories are men only . What message is that supposed to give out to schoolchildren using wikipedia - novelist = male? Surely Wikipedia isn't really meant to that sexist? --FDent (talk) 19:56, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Historically, many fields have been men-only. Women partaking in these fields are cause for separate categorization. When men partake in historically women-only fields (though there are few), they are cause for separate categorization, Category:Male ballet dancers for instance. I don't view it as sexist, I view it as quite the opposite. Scarce2 (talk) 20:05, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Novelist is clearly not such a "traditionally male" field. Roger (talk) 20:14, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) If you are interested, WP:Cat/gender has some more details regarding this specific issue. Also remember that categories themselves are solemnly intended for easy access of information - If was looking for information on female Scottish poets i would have to wade trough the 334 entries listed in the Scottish poets category in order to locate the 34 women in there which is quite a pain. Note that categories are often not entirely complete - there are quite likely more female poets in that list. For the same reason categories sometimes don't exist. If someone were to look for female poets they would notice the missing category and end up creating it. Since male poets are much more common it is likely the "We really need that category for this" reaction would not occur. If you feel something is lacking though, feel free to fix it yourself. This can give rise to apparent incongruities though. For example, Elisabeth Moss refers to herself as an "actor" so that is, rightly, how we describe her in the body of the article, yet we categorise her in "actresses" categories. I am not saying this is wrong, but it can look odd to the casual reader.--ukexpat (talk) 20:23, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

article for creation is stuck

sbeattie — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sbeattie (talkcontribs) 19:57, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The article itself was never up for review - due to an incorrectly closed reference tag the review request template was never added and as of such the article was stuck in the limbo (Or rather: never waiting to be reviewed). I've corrected that issue, and it is waiting for review now. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 20:02, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nobody at Wikipedia created the page on Facebook. It is Facebook's users or administrators who create such pages by copying some information from Wikipedia. You can ask for advice at the Facebook template missing ID and not present in Wikidata.. Roger (talk) 20:52, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You could also edit whichever page on Wikipedia you're talking about - perhaps Portishead, Somerset or some other page - and improve it by adding information supported by reliable sources (see WP:REFB for how to start on that). Probably Facebook's page will update to reflect those changes, either immediately or after some time. But that's up to them, not up to us. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 20:57, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Repeated vandalism of the page covering me

Steven Kropper (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

The wikedia page about me has regularly been vandalized. It happens every six months. Can you advise how I can prevent this. Thanks.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Skropper (talkcontribs) 22:56, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Every six months is very infrequent compared to some articles. If it was continuing currently we could request that the article be locked, but that would be inappropriate in this current circumstances. Many of our editors monitor recent changes specifically for vandalism and it it usually caught and reverted pretty quickly.--ukexpat (talk) 01:21, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Steven! I'm sorry to hear that you have been having vandalism issues with the article about you. I've taken a quick peak at the revision history, and noticed that you have edited the page about you. This is sometimes seen as an issue although I'm sure it was with good intent. The first thing I recommend you do is add COI to the top of the article, which basically says that a non-neutral party (you) have edited the article. It also says that someone else may want to verify the changes that you have made, and add reliable external sources to back up the changes. I notice that your page also has an "issues" banner which says that it lacks reliable references. I'm sure that there is no-one that knows better than you what journals, papers, articles, tv interviews, or whatever that you have been featured in. I would include a list of those references on the talk page to give any neutral party the best chance of improving the article and preventing it from being nominated for deletion. If you feel that the general consensus of other people of the content of the vandalism would be considered incredibly offensive, a personal attack, abusive, or threatening you may request that the page be semi-protected by Requesting page protection. I would request it be a semi-protection to block all unregistered users from editing the page. I hope this helps! Technical 13 (talk) 16:08, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

YouTube

What is the copyrite policy of Wikipedia related to YouTube materials? Is it allowable to place references to YouTube in the lists of external references?Сергей Олегович (talk) 03:34, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

YouTube is seldom a viable reference. Partial exceptions are made when the links are to YouTube videos placed by known reliable sources and do not violate copyright. It is seldom that a YouTube video tells us anything which could not be more usefully conveyed by sourced text. --Orange Mike | Talk 03:45, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your detailed answer.
Re: Reliability. In general, I agree with you. But in this particular case I am speaking about documentaries of BBC, National Geographics and similar establishes sources. In particular, the documentaries on history of USSR, WWI&WWII, Cold War etc. This sources often provide much more wide picture then written texts available in Russian at the moment. So I see it as consistent with the POV principle to list references to such materials in the lists of Exernal links (NB: not as references) in corresponding articles.
Re: Copyright This issue is the most important for me at the moment. The said above links sometimes get deleted on the basis of supposedly copyright breach reasons. Most frequently this happens in articles on history episodes which are still highly controvercial in Russia (Stalin's legacy, Gulag, Communism, etc.). I consider this as POV breach on formal pretext.
My question is: is there any copyright policy of Wikipedia that prevents using links to YouTube. Сергей Олегович (talk) 04:48, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You should not link to any content that is itself a copyright violation and many YouTube videos are. Basically, if you see a BBC/National Geographic video etc. on YouTube and its not uploaded by the channel itself, you should assume it's a copyright violation unless you have good reason to believe otherwise. See Viacom International Inc. v. YouTube, Inc. for an indication of how widespread it is. For the policy statement, see WP:ELNEVER.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 05:22, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Footnotes, but not for sources

Is there a specific order in which we should use footnotes on Wikipedia? I'm not referring to <ref> tags, but rather the use of *, †, ‡, ^ or other typographic symbols, in lists. Buttons to Push Buttons (talk | contribs) 08:11, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Such symbols are not used at all, typically such notes would be "referenced" by a superscript Note 1 which links to the footnote. See method D at WP:EXPLNOTE, it is the most commonly used method to sort references and explanatory footnotes into separate lists. Roger (talk) 09:22, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I need to add efn to that section: they are very useful for tables. --  Gadget850 (Ed) talk 09:54, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps I didn't mean footnote, I'm not sure what the right term is. They're used in keys for lists. Regardless, these absolutely are used when the MOS is adhered to, per MOS:ACCESS. In order to comply with this subsection, they are necessary for accessibility for blind readers. Take a look at recently approved featured lists such as List of songs recorded by Cheryl Cole (dagger and purple bg colour), or List of international cricket five-wicket hauls by Chaminda Vaas (asterisk, dagger, double dagger, and which uses them instead of colour) and you'll see what I mean. But I'm not sure which to use, and in which order, is the issue. Buttons to Push Buttons (talk | contribs) 09:45, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Typographic footnotes are rather quaint; the order and symbols depend on which method you use. One method uses:
* ⁑ † ‡ ** ⁑⁑ †† ‡‡ *** ⁑⁑⁑ ††† ‡‡‡
Other methods include the use of parallels ||, the pilcrow ¶ and other symbols.--  Gadget850 (Ed) talk 09:54, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Shakespeare's first term 'strange bedfellows' in "The Tempest"

Hello,

I was looking up the original source of Shakespeare's term "strange bedfellows" and did not see it in your lengthy list; however, could you please add the reference (a shortened version, of course)-The Tempest--Act 2:

As the storm resumes and thunder sounds, Trinculo is forced into the nearest shelter, which happens to be Caliban's gaberdine (a loose-fitting cloak). As Trinculo famously puts it, "misery acquaints a man with strange bedfellows," and he uses the phrase more literally than we do. He must, to avoid the storm, actually lie down with the petrified Caliban (who thinks Trinculo a tormenting spirit) and share his garment as bedclothing. Trinculo's "strange" can mean either "foreign," "unknown," or "odd," while we use "strange" only in the last sense. We've also adapted the phrase to more metaphorical uses, meaning by "strange bedfellows" unexpected partners.

OH! I just figured out what you are doing... That is not the fullscreen button. That is wikimedia's thumbnail enlarge button, I know, it is confusing. What is the difference, right... The "fullscreen button" only appears if you mouse over the video, and it appears as an "X" with arrows at all four points. The thing you "thought" was full screen that looks like a window nested inside of another window is actually just a link to take you to the page that the file is located on. There is a full screen icon with a four-way arrow. That works for me. But if I double click an image from a video then I get full screen for the latest video I had played, regardless whether it was that one I double clicked. I don't know whether this is a bug or expected behaviour. I also use FF 19.0.2. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:53, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I just double-clicked for full-screen - which is pretty much standard, for YouTube, BBC iPlayer, VLCPlayer, Windows Media Player, and various others.

Editors must take particular care when adding information about living persons to any Wikipedia page.[1] Such material requires a high degree of sensitivity, and must adhere strictly to all applicable laws in the United States, to this policy, and to Wikipedia's three core content policies:
Neutral point of view (NPOV)
Verifiability (V)
No original research (NOR)

We must get the article right. Be very firm about the use of high-quality sources. All quotations and any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be explicitly attributed to a reliable, published source

I just created Ɛ́ as a redirect to Latin epsilon; it's an accented version of Ɛ, which already redirects there. The time of its creation was 20:12, 4 April 2013, but to my surprise, it didn't appear at Special:Newpages. Here are four consecutive entries on Special:Newpages:

20:13, 4 April 2013 ‎Dahaneh-e Zurak (hist) ‎[1,817 bytes] ‎Carlossuarez46 (talk | contribs | block) (create)

20:11, 4 April 2013 ‎Save, Rwanda (hist) ‎[5,150 bytes] ‎Aymatth2 (talk | contribs | block) (initial stub)

Why wouldn't it appear? Is it perhaps because it's such an unusual title? I notice that Ɛ́ takes longer to load than most pages (especially redirects!), so I wonder if the software can't treat it normally. Nyttend (talk) 20:19, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure what to do re: upset new editor wanting to own an article

I'm not sure whether this is serious enough for ANI so I'll ask here first. Yotsume (talk · contribs) is a new editor and has added a lot of content to the Anma article. He appears to have a conflict of interest, since he runs a website on the topic and has pasted text from said website to the article, as well as adding it as an external link and using a book he wrote as a reference for the article. When I made some minor edits to the article, he left me a message that indicated he wished to own his contributions (e.g. "Being that I am one of only a handful of fully certified "Anmashi" (anma practitioners) in the USA certified in Japan I would like to ask that you consult with me before altering my hard work"). I left a polite message in reply on his talk page, and he responded by deleting most of Anma, saying "due to the continued destructive edits being done I have now taken down all the info I had posted and no longer support the use of my info about Anma on wikipedia." When I reverted the deletion, Yotsume, now editing as 24.251.176.159 (talk · contribs · WHOIS), said "What the heck do you think you are doing restoring info I deleted to the anma wiki!!! I posted it first and now have decided to no longer support wikipedia. I am no longer going to allow the info to be posted. I will have the owners of the info including my self pull their copyrights and contact you directly to have the info removed permanently!!!" Furthermore, he blanked his user talk page and re-deleted the sections from Anma.

If someone could advise me on what to do, I'd really appreciate it. I'm thinking that Anma should be semiprotected until this situation calms down. --Atlantima (talk) 21:59, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You need to be more selective with your own edits;
When you did this, you added unreferenced information like, Anma is one of the oldest forms of massage in the world and it is the oldest form of bodywork in the orient.
You can't do that = see WP:BURDEN.
However, you are totally right to remove the copyrighted text; and if the user adds it back they should be warned/blocked. 88.104.28.176 (talk) 22:06, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
