TV One is an American cable and satellite television channel based in Silver Spring, Maryland and primarily owned[clarify] by Radio One and NBCUniversal (network was originally owned by Comcast prior to its acquisition of NBCUniversal). Launched on January 19, 2004,[citation needed] It targets African American adults with a broad range of programming, including original lifestyle and entertainment-oriented shows, documentaries, movies, and concert performances. It also shows sitcoms from the 1970s through 2000s, such as The Jeffersons, Amen, A Different World, Good Times, Living Single and Martin.

TV One is available in over 38 million homes as of 2007[1] via DirecTV, Comcast, Cox, Charter, Time Warner Cable, AT&T U-Verse, Insight, and other smaller cable television providers.

History

On July 7, 2008, Johnathan Rodgers, president and CEO of TV One, announced that the network planned to break from its usual entertainment programming to provide extensive coverage of the Democratic National Convention in August. However, the network didn’t plan any coverage of the Republican Convention. Rodgers explained:

"Sen. Barack Obama running for president is a huge deal for TV One as it is for the African American community," Rodgers was quoted saying to the Associated Press. "African Americans have fallen in love with his candidacy, his family ... we will be covering the Democratic convention all the time. My audience is 93% black," Rodgers added. "I serve my audience."[2]

In August 2012, TV One updated its on-air look and logo, as part of a plan to "tell stories about how African-American life unfolds and to distinguish it from a growing number of competitors."[3]
