Template links

WP:NOPIPE and WP:NOTBROKEN aside, a redirect in a navbox is broken, as it does not display correctly on the target page. The link is supposed to be a bold 'non-link' on the page in question - if the link is a redirect, it doesn't do that, but instead is still is an active link, making it look like there is a different page for the subject. - The Bushranger _{One ping only} 10:59, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

Recent changes

• Wikimedia no longer uses visitor statistics from comScore. [2]
• You can make interactive graphs with the Graph extension. There is now a tutorial for how to do this. [3]

Problems

• Some pages do not turn in up in categories where they should be. This is because link tables are sometimes not populated. [4]

Changes this week

• The Nuke extension will work with Flow. This will make it easier to handle spam in Flow. [5]
• New file uploads will now be patrollable. [6]
• Internet Explorer 8 will no longer have JavaScript support. You will still be able to browse and edit Wikipedia if you use Internet Explorer 8, but will not be able to use some features. This can be solved by upgrading to a newer version or switching to a different browser. [7][8]

Meetings

• You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 12 January at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

• URLs in the recent changes IRC feed will no longer be rewritten to unencrypted HTTP. This could be a breaking change for bots dependent on the IRC feed. [9]
• The edit tabs for the wikitext editor and the visual editor will be combined to one single edit tab. You will be able to choose which one you prefer. If you are not logged in, your choice will be saved as a cookie in your browser. You can test the single edit tab. [10][11]
• There is a beta feature that adds links to the subject on other Wikimedia projects. This works much like the links to for example Wikipedia articles in other languages. It will go out of beta testing and be enabled for everyone in January. Wikis that don't want this can decide to have it disabled. [12][13]
• The difference between "alerts" and "messages" notifications is unclear to some. The developers want feedback at the Phabricator task or on MediaWiki.org so they can make this better. You can give feedback in your language if you can't write in English.

Recent changes

• You will be able to find or mark bugs and suggestions in Phabricator that are specific for your language or wiki. [14]
• Notifications have been upgraded with more detailed and easier-to-access information. See the documentation. Cross-wiki notifications will be available soon on the two test wikis. [15]

Changes this week

• The visual editor uses the TemplateData extension to make editing templates easier. You will now get a warning when you edit a TemplateData form and leave it without saving. [16]
• MediaWiki will get a new authentication and authorization system called AuthManager. This is planned to happen in a month or two. Some bots will need to change how they log in. Two new and more stable authentication methods will be available now: Owner-only OAuth credentials and bot passwords. You can read more about the change. [17]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 19 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 20 January. It will be on all Wikipedias from 21 January (calendar).

Ok, so one of them is still wrong.

I refer to this RV. "commenced construction of the plutonium semiworks, codenamed X-10" or "[X-10] was the world's second artificial nuclear reactor". The lede bounces back and forth. I don't believe the chemical extraction side was referred to as X-10, and since that is definitely part of the semi works then my edit was correct, or the rest of the lede is wrong. So which is it? The first one is right. X-10 was the codename for the plutonium semiworks, of which the reactor was part. So what do we have?

"One reactor of similar design to the X-10 Graphite Reactor is still in operation today"

G'day Hawkeye, I've been trying to reference the Salamaua–Lae campaign article this weekend, but have come up blank with the base development information in the Aftermath section of the article. Given the sources you were able to bring to the Battle of Milne Bay article, I was wondering if you might be able to check your library to see if you can add the last couple of references. Recent changes

• You can now follow when pages are added or removed from a category on German Wikipedia. The plan is to add it to Wikimedia Commons and other Wikipedias this week. [18][19]
• Administrators can hide individual entries of a page with RevisionDelete. There is now a button to choose "all", "none" or "inverse" in Special:Log. The article history will get the same buttons soon. Wikis that have done this locally with JavaScript will be able to remove that code. [20]

Changes this week

• You will be able to see the references when you preview a section you are editing. This will happen even if there is no <references /> tag in that section. [21]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 26 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 27 January. It will be on all wikis from 28 January (calendar).

Future changes

• There is now an extension called ArticlePlaceholder. It can automatically generate content on Wikipedia with data from Wikidata if there is no Wikipedia article. It will have a tag to remind the reader it is not an article and ask the reader to create one. The developer is now looking for smaller Wikipedias that want to try the extension. [22]
• The OTRS system will be upgraded. The plan is to do this on 3 February at 08:00 (UTC). It will probably take 6 to 8 hours. OTRS will be down during the upgrade. [23]
• Users will soon be automatically congratulated when they reach some edit count milestones. [24]

Thanks for that. In the wake of the Vietnam War, the educational authorities decided that the Cold War was lost, and that we should all learn Russian. I found it a difficult subject, not least because I missed a term as a result of a surgical operation. You could pass by passing the exam, or by memorising and reciting a Pushkin poem. Problems

• Sites with a wikimedia.org address were by mistake redirected to the Wikimedia Foundation wiki on 26 January. This included Meta and Wikimedia Commons. The mistake was fixed after an hour. [26]
• Some users had problems logging in and out around 22 January. Bots also had problems and edit previews did not work properly. This was because of problems related to the new component SessionManager. It was undone on 23 January. [27][28]
• Because of new problems with SessionManager the latest version of MediaWiki was removed from the Wikimedia wikis again on 31 January. The new version this week will be without SessionManager. [29]

Changes this week

• The page history will get a help link. This will go to Help:Page history on Meta. Wikis can exchange it for a link to their local pages. [30]
• Notifications will only show part of a page name if it is very long. You will also have another way to mark notifications as read. [31][32]
• The Universal Language Selector input methods are now available with the visual editor. This means many who write in non-Latin scripts can now use the visual editor. [33]
• The visual editor will now give you more tools to edit tables. You can move rows and columns in a table and copy parts of tables to make new ones. You can also copy and paste more than one cell at the same time. [34][35][36]
• The visual editor has a new warning message when you leave a page you are editing without saving. Non-English wikis might need to translate it. [37][38]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 2 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 3 February. It will be on all wikis from 4 February (calendar).

Working at DYK absent the full toolset

I don't know if we can do that, as the protection comes via the cascading protection from the main page. I don't know enough about such things? Not sure if that's appropriate

Maybe I'm being overly paranoid, I can see how this could have happened unintentionally. But I don't think it's entirely appropriate to notify/thank among others the 4 bureaucrats ([40] [41] [42] [43]) who were positive towards your nomination, because they are still in the process of deciding the result. Back in 2007, one RfA was basically not deemed successful with 201 supports and 71 opposes, but the usual RfA in those days had far more votes than any recent ones - even with auto-notification to editors. To cut the b.s., I think the reason for the failure was because you were in the lower half of the 65-75% discretionary zone, it's probably as simple as that. Whatever the 'crats might say it's basically a numbers game. A no consensus result means you could try again, and probably pass, in six months time. Now I do think you could answered the questions a little differently, please contact me if you like for my views on a strategy. Sorry to see it went the way it did. I didn't expect it to be plain sailing but I wouldn't have nominated you if I didn't think you had a chance, nor if I didn't think you'd be a good admin. Okay, you got a lot of opposition; some of it we foresaw, some of it we didn't. There is certainly a feeling that you haven't learnt from the evens of four years ago, or haven't moved on, or haven't shown enough contrition. But remember very nearly two hundred of your peers supported you. That's quite an incredible turnout. The lengthy and well thought-out rationales from many of those editors, among them some of the most respected editors on Wikipedia, show that you have the trust of a significant majority of the community. Beyond that, even most of the opposers spoke highly of you and praised your work and your dedication to Wikipedia. To me, it says a lot about you that even many of your detractors went out of their way to praise your contribution. Besides, most admin work is boring grunt work that's forgotten about in seconds whereas you article work will be around in one form or another for decades. People will remember Wikipedia as an encyclopaedia—not necessarily a perfect one, but one that could at least provide a decent overview of any subject imaginable—not for all the vandals that were blocked, and that's down in no small part to you. So my advice would be not to focus on the final tally, but to dust yourself off and do what you do best. And if you find yourself in Blighty, let me know and I'll buy you a drink. I've got an ~in use~ template at the top of the page but you can ignore it if you see anything that needs fixing. Oh, and what I'd like to do is establish a 5 person PAC = Project Accuracy Coordinators who will oversee the project, and vet the fact-check promotion candidates who apply. This project is actually the foundation for a much bigger plan I proposed to WMF during their current community consultation re: their "Reach strategy. My suggestion was in regards to protection and promotion of articles that have passed stringent reviews and accuracy checks (and will carry our project seal which you can see at the project page). I tested the waters a tiny bit at Drmies TP, and now I'm hoping to get a good team together comprising content creators/FA participants/reviewers for PAC. Let me know if you're interested. It is designed for clean and modern infoboxes that are driven by data from Wikidata, easily usable across different language versions, and easily extensible.
• The visual editor now follows the TemplateData format setting announced in November. When you edit or add a use of a template, the wikitext will be laid out in one of the two ways. [68][69]

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. Forty-seven competitors move into this round (a bit shy of the expected 64), and we are roughly broken into eight groups of six. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups.

Twenty-two Good Articles were submitted, including three by Cyclonebiskit (submissions), and two each by MPJ-DK (submissions), Hurricanehink (submissions), 12george1 (submissions), and Cas Liber (submissions). You can readily confirm that the book does not attribute the divorce to the car accident, but rather to Mariette wanting to party more: page 172 and following. Additionally, the book does not state that they had two parties per week, at least not on the pages cited.

Those are two examples of false claims that you have added to the article. An example of a true claim that you removed from the article is that von Neumann was fluent in Greek.[77] That von Neumann did know Greek is stated in the same book: page 48.

True, but the following sentence was about the professor of Byzantine history, and I couldn't find it in the reference given, or in Macrae. So I removed it while I went looking for it. Rather, Macrae says that the rest of the family denies that Johnny "converse[d] at the lunch table with his father in [Greek]" and the rest of the family did not understand; perhaps such conversations occurred only a few times and the rest of the family did not recall. The same page tells that his father instilled in him a love a Greek (and that Greek was a required subject in high school). • Files on Wikimedia Commons can now be 2 GB big. The old limit was 1 GB. [80]
• Welcome notifications now have a different symbol. English Wikipedia already had this one. [81]
• The Wikimedia memory cache servers in the Eqiad cluster have now been upgraded to Debian 8 (Jessie). Some users might have had to log in again because of this. [82]
• It is now easier to categorize images uploaded to Wikimedia Commons in the Commons Android app. [83]
• Bare attributes in tags now parse according to the HTML5 specifications. <pages from= to= section=1> will parse as <pages from="to=" section="1"> instead of <pages from="" to="" section="1"> as it used to. Please use <pages from="" to="" section=1> or <pages section=1> instead. This is mostly likely to affect pages on Wikisource projects. [84]

Problems

• Phabricator has been a bit unstable lately. This should be fixed now. [85]
• The PageView API shows wrong data between 23 February and 29 February for pages with special characters in their title. [86]
• The parsing change mentioned above caused a large number of pages to break, especially on Wikisource. [87]
• You may see falsely formatted edit links on both mobile and desktop devices. Mobile devices can also show incorrect formatted table of contents. This should be fixed soon. [88]
• Templates using TemplateData that were edited with the visual editor might have some problems in wikitext mode. This can be fixed by editing and saving the page by using the visual editor without making any changes. [89]

Because of a test, there will also be a couple of minutes where you can't edit the wikis on 15 March starting 07:00 UTC. You can read more about the server work. There will be more notifications and updates about this.
• Administrators and other users with advanced permissions will need to have an 8-byte long passwords. This change takes place on 15 March. Users with too short passwords will be asked to change password the next time they log in. This was decided in a discussion on Meta and is because they can use tools that can hurt the wikis. [97]

Take a look at Chicago Pile-1

Seen as you've done the lions share of work on the article, I thought it best to run this edit that I've made, by you. Essentially, prior to this edit, the article suggested that the rod removal was done by hand, however the reference below suggests that in the final moments it was not in fact done by hand. So I was wondering if you could clarify this ambiguity?

Richard Fox, who made the control-rod mechanism for the pile, remarked that the manual speed control that the operator had over the rods was simply a variable resistor, controlling an electric motor that would spool the "clothesline" wire over a pulley that also had two lead weights attached to ensure it would 'fail-safe' and return to its zero position when released.

• The visual editor can generate wikicode with image options in your language. Examples of image options are "thumb" or "left". You can ask to change to options in your language in Phabricator. [110][111]
• Wiktionaries and Wikisources can now use the visual editor. It is an opt-in beta feature. It still needs development to work better with these projects. [112][113]
• ORES is using new models. Tools that use ORES' predictions can behave strangely. ORES also has a new API. [114]
• The visual editor now supports classical Greek characters. [115]

Problems

• There was a bug when you used keyboard arrows in templates in the visual editor. This has now been fixed. [116]

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 April. It will be on all wikis from 14 April (calendar).

Lede structure

H, I don't think that saying "The Metallurgical Laboratory or 'Met Lab' was the code name ..." makes any sense. You need to either use the term or refer to it (see Use–mention distinction), but this mixes them up. You could say "Metallurgical Laboratory or Met Lab was the code name", or you could say "The Metallurgical Laboratory or 'Met Lab' was part of ...". Yes? Dicklyon (talk) 02:23, 19 April 2016 (UTC)

I get what you're saying, Dick, but I have a hunch it's not going to fly, because Wikipedians (at least the ones who write FAC-level history articles) aren't used to starting an article that way. Fortunately, the article is currently at A-class (Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/Metallurgical Laboratory) ... float the idea there and we'll see if it sinks or swims. (P.S. Agreed, Dick. What I'm saying is that "X was the code name" is a less common way to start one of the articles I normally copyedit, regardless of whether X is italicized or not. Problems

• Wikimedia tested a new data center last week. This meant that the wikis could be read but not edited for 45 minutes on April 19 and for 20 minutes on April 21. [124]
• When the data center was tested, new edits were not shown in the recent changes log for 20 minutes. They are in the logs now. You can read more about how to find the edits.
• Unread notifications were sometimes counted incorrectly. This has now been fixed. [125]

• Wikimedia Commons will have better access to Wikidata. They can use data from any page on Wikidata on any page on Commons. This will happen on April 26. [126]
• It will be easier to choose if you want to watch files you have uploaded with the upload wizard. [127]

WikiCup 2016 May newsletter

Round 2 is over and 35 competitors have moved on to Round 3.

Round 2 saw three FAs (two by Cas Liber (submissions) and one by Montanabw (submissions)), four Featured Lists (with three by Calvin999 (submissions)), and 53 Good Articles (six by Worm That Turned (submissions) and five each by Hurricanehink (submissions), Cwmhiraeth (submissions), and MPJ-DK (submissions)). Eleven Featured Pictures were promoted (six by Adam Cuerden (submissions) and five by Godot13 (submissions)). One Featured Portal, Featured Topic and Good Topic were also promoted. The DYK base point total was 1,135. Cwmhiraeth (submissions) scored 265 base points, while The C of E (submissions) and MPJ-DK (submissions) each scored 150 base points. Eleven ITN were promoted and 131 Good Article Reviews were conducted with MPJ-DK (submissions) completing a staggering 61 reviews. Two contestants, Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and Cas Liber (submissions), broke the 700 point mark for Round 2.

This is the article before I began updating it in May. It was already there. In fact, it was in the oldest version of the article from 1 June 2007. Adding attribution is not mandatory when copying your own prose from one article to another, but it would help me if you did so, as such copying can trigger a bot report, and it speeds up checking the items if the edit summary mentions the copying.
