United States article nomination

I still would like a response or a change of vote. Thank you.--Ryz05 t 23:09, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The thing is that some are objecting because of the size while others object because of its comprehensiveness, so it is unfair either way. Also, just about every article (especially that on a popular topic) is vandalized. Finally, citations are important as references. I ask you to reconsider your vote. Thank you.--Ryz05 t 23:21, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism is a strong word...

[edit]

...so don't use it lightly. In this case, I think the anonymous contributor had simply been taught si instead of ti (I've heard it both ways), so we shouldn't call it "vandalism" or assume any malicious intent. —Keenan Pepper 22:18, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As I have pointed out, repeatedly, and will continue to do so, this user has a long history of calling ANY edit that he either does not understand or does not agree with vandalism. But, he's also very dilligent with correcting *actual* vandalism. But it does give one the appearance of crying wolf. Zero sharp 18:36, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

D-flat Minor

[edit]

No I can't unfortunately (I am not an expert in this area) which is why I suggested that such information be added to the article. But it must logically exist and this seems to confirm that it is at least recognized by people who know more than I do.

Looking on Google, music does exist in this key, for example: [2] and there is at least one Rachmaninov piano concerto [3]. Gwernol 18:25, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Missing Template

[edit]

I am temporarily adding a yet nonexistent template because I want to add the colors to the template that use that template. The template {{Shades of brown}} will be installed shortly after I copy the colors into it. Otherwise, I would have to go to each page, get the color, go back to the template and insert the color, finish and save the template, then go back to all the pages I just visited and re-edit them to add the link to the template. I might miss one of them the other way. This would seem to be more efficient. Paul Robinson (Rfc1394) 21:35, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Changing the spelling from 'color' to 'colour' is not "Vandalism".

see Wikipedia:Vandalism#What_vandalism_is_not: "Any good-faith effort to improve the encyclopedia, even if misguided or ill-considered, is not vandalism. Apparent bad-faith edits that do not make their bad-faith nature inarguably explicit are not considered vandalism at Wikipedia. For example, adding an opinion once is not vandalism — it's just not helpful, and should be removed or restated." Zero sharp 22:01, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fish

[edit]

Howdy, I saw your note in the Fish article. I was (at least if my memory serves me) the one who added the word "most" to describe fish. Specifically at issue are Lamiform sharks and some species of Tuna (I know less about the latter) which have the ability to raise their body temp above that of the water. At my fingertips (although not necessarily the best reference on the subject), see Goldman, Anderson, Latour, and Musick. 2004. Homeothermy in adult salmon sharks, Lamna ditropis. Environmental Biology of Fishes 71: 403-411. I can look around for a more general review if you'd like. --TeaDrinker 01:35, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bowser (2)

[edit]

I actually supported that straw poll/consensus gathering excercise on the talk page. Anyway, when I made this edit, I figured that there must have been a good reason to move Bowser to King Bowser, so I re-redirected that page to the disambiguation. And it was useless having Bowser redirecting to King Bowser anyway, as I stated in the edit summary. -- Steel 08:31, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bowser

Please provide evidence to substantiate your claim that the Nintendo is the most common usage of bowser. [edit]

You are in danger of violating the three-revert rule on a page. Please cease further reverts or you may be blocked from further editing. Naconkantari 23:14, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Stay cool. I agree that something ugly is going on with this page but don't overreact. This is good advice in general: No matter how badly a page is edited today, it can always be fixed tomorrow.
See if you can't find a few other editors who have been active on this page in the past; talk it over with them. If one editor opposes all of you together and insists on distorting the page to ridiculous lengths, an RfC may be required. If on the other hand, most of the other editors side with the ridiculously long page, then maybe you and I are wrong and it's just time to move on. Okay? John Reid 09:52, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

You just reported me on the 3RR Noticeboard, even though I didn't make more than three reverts. You did violate the 3RR, though. You also placed dummy links that look like reversion ones. This is pretty serious stuff.--Macaw 54 23:45, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The third is certainly a revert. The first was a reversion of my edits to the pronunciation section. Your framing of me certainly warrants a blocking, in my opinion. Perhaps I should post on WP:AN/I?--Macaw 54 23:54, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

False accusation of vandalism

[edit]

I was not engaging in vandalism and I resent the accusation. Vandalism would be adding profanity, nonsense or other graffiti to the page. I was making an editorial change on the grounds that it is ludicrous for Wikipedia to treat the American Georgia on equal terms with the country. You might disagree with it, but it wasn't vandalism. 86.134.211.242 17:26, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Grade skips

[edit]

Mentioning grade skips was to prove a point, though it's not entirely irrelevant. Presumably grade skips are less common than grade repeats, for whatever reason. The anon argued in his summaries that "let's be neutral here", which "we" already were sufficiently IMO. But if we're really being "neutral", as in "including all possible ages", we ought to consider advanced students too, shouldn't we? If I have time I'll see what can be dug up. - Keith D. Tyler (AMA) 20:31, 29 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've reverted your deletion of a large chunk of text from this article. Please review Wikipedia:Summary style and Wikipedia:Article size for proper guidance on how to split out sections into a separate article. In this particular case, I request that you discuss changes of this nature on the talk page. The group of us that work on Windows-related articles are very aware that the length of the article is beyond Wikipedia's normal article length, but the sheer amount of information that needs to be communicated warrants careful consideration as to how it should be done. Thanks. -/- Warren 03:25, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Help requested

[edit]

Hi

I'm writing to you - and others - because you are one of several people who appears to have experienced the same thing as I have noticed and experienced.

Namely a pattern of vandalism by an anonymous user. The IP # is 66.229.10.64

See this user's talk page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:66.229.10.64

This user has been temporarily blocked several times. I notice that the pattern is the same.

The person doesn't seem to respond to polite community requests to engage in dialogue - or to desist from repeatedly making edits that several editors consider to be vandalism.

I am not that experienced in these matters but can there be an attempt made to block this user permanently? Or at least for a period of time so that the person gets a message about respecting the community. Thanks. Davidpatrick 03:07, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Fake administrator

[edit]

I am not a fake administrator. I stated my reason on the discussion page. Who is Keith Tyler? I don't know this person. Why did you mentioned this person? Tell me who he is. What did I do that made you think that I was a fake administrator? I wrote the reason for reverting it in the discussion page...here's my reason..

We should keep this article neutral. This article is not about the United States. There are other countries too. 6th grade or 8th grade is either the final year of elementary school. It says so in my dictionary. 5th grade can be the final year...but it's not always. Saying 6th grade is a part of secondary school sounds more neutral than saying it is part of middle school. middle school means junior high school too. so which one should we take? It's better if we say secondary school. But we can all agree that 6th grade is a part of secondary school to many nations.

Junior high school is a school usually including grades seven and eight, and sometimes six or nine; any school intermediate between elementary school and senior high school. (209.177.21.6 - Talk)

Actually, middle school and junior high school are technically two different things. - Keith D. Tyler (AMA) 22:06, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Gender-neutral language

[edit]

I don't really have any strong feelings about gender-neutral language. I generally try to phrase things to avoid potentially ambiguous pronouns, but have no qualms about using an indefinite "he". I don't find edits that purely aim for gender-neutral language to be necessary, but as long as they don't make things worse, it doesn't really matter.

In the case of the multiple choice edit, it broke the second paragraph ("The responses are independent of the taker's ability to be clearly with language or handwriting."), and a quick revert was as good of an option as fixing it up. --Xanzzibar 07:59, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

As I said on the article's talk page, since the subject is deceased, it isn't likely that the article is going to get bigger, so I am inclined to leave it intact. Let's see if others weigh in. About the fourth and fifth PBS idents

[edit]

I saw one Sesame Street episode from 1993, and it had the 1989 PBS ident. Would you mind reverting your edits to the previous user's? --Jonghyunchung 20:49, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi... You reverted my removal of a list of numbers that are not the number 1,000,000 from the million article. Rather than removing it again I would rather discuss this first on the article talk page so that other people can contribute. Thanks. Remy B 15:13, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Color controversy

[edit]

I notice you seem to be very knowledgeable about color. In the past six months I have written many dozens of articles on color for the Wikipedia. I got the idea to write my first article, which is now my longest article, rose, beginning last September from a comment you made on a discussion page, when you mentioned that it was the opposite of Spring green. Since then, I have written or expanded dozens of Wikipedia articles on color. I was wondering if you could do me a favor? You seem like you like colors so could you do me the favor of going to the discussion page of the violet article and voting under the heading "Which Way Forward" that you favor keeping the "Shades of violet color comparison chart" (if that is your preference)? I am trying to keep the articles colorful and interesting and some of these other people keep wanting to delete a lot of the information and make the articles dull and uninteresting. I would appreciate it very much. Best wishes, Keraunos 11:25, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(x-posted from my talk page) I'm not saying there aren't any other uses for "WUBL," which is far from my belief. Naming convention states that if there are no other articles named "WUBL", this station should be located at WUBL. If other articles exist, WUBL should be a dab page, and the article should be located at WUBL (FM) (the naming convention for stations that can't be located at their callsign, but have no suffix), not at WUBL-FM. JPG-GR 22:09, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have moved the article to WUBL (FM). Feel free to proceed and make a dab page at WUBL now. Thanks. JPG-GR 22:12, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ironically, nearly all the results of a Google search are references to this station. If a dab article isn't created at WUBL in the next few days, this set of moves may be reverted. JPG-GR 22:16, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Billion pool

When exactly is the time for a pool for more than ten million articles? I'm new here, hence not very familiar with that stuff. I just thought that it should be created by analogy with the similar million pool. Astroguy2 23:26, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Chicago/Chicago, Illinois

[edit]

I admit that I personally haven't moved any of these articles until I moved Chicago to Chicago, Illinois, but if you look at other cities (with the exception of New York City, but that's an exception due to the unusual case of the city and state being the same name. It looks abnormal for an article to be titled "New York, New York.") you will see that almost all cities are moved to "city, state" format. Prime examples include Los Angeles, California, Dallas, Texas, Seattle, Washington, and Boston, Massachusetts. The reason for this is because of disambiguation; pages like Boston and Dallas have disambiguation pages. Chicago also has a disambiguation page, so moving the page to Chicago, Illinois format helps to distinguish Chicago (city) from Chicago (band), Chicago (typeface), and Chicago (poker game). Additionally, with the exception of NYC, I haven't seen many other articles who are currently titled just the City, and all the others in the past that have had that format have been moved to the new format because of disambiguation. When I moved the article, the basis for doing that was because, with the exception of a select few articles, all the others have recently been moved to this new format to avoid disambiguation further. ––Ksy92003(talk) 17:56, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure how that would work... I personally think Chicago should contain the disambiguation links, but I don't want to do anything myself because I know Chicago is linked to by a lot of other articles, and it would be too disruptive to change that. So because of that, I think it would be best to re-direct Chicago to Chicago, Illinois and say "'Chicago' redirects here. For other uses, see Chicago (disambiguation)." That's what I would do, but again, too many pages link to Chicago for me to want to take a risk of it going to the wrong page. I suppose you can just move it back, if you think that'd be best. ––Ksy92003(talk) 18:32, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Items

[edit]

You're missing the point. Do you have an actual reason to want to keep this? If you do, please state it. Relying on "Discussion is needed" or anything like that is not a valid reason to keep an article. The fact that two people felt it was necessary also doesn't mean that the article needs to be kept. It cannot pass the fiction guidelines, and it belongs in the main article. TTN 21:06, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Most of the time, discussions on articles like these will not receive a response. I only bother when I expect to be reverted or there are active editors working on it constantly. That is why I would like you to provide an actual reason. It is perfectly fine for you to want to keep the article; that is when the discussion can start. But that cannot happen if you provide roundabout reasons like that (because reverting solely on the reason to have a discussion doesn't work). So in short, if you actually want to keep it, provide an argument or just a statement as to why it should stay, and it can be discussed. TTN 21:11, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
LuigiManiac seems to be a infrequent editor, so holding an article just to wait for his opinion is rather pointless (plus, people have no connection to the articles that they create (WP:OWN)). At this point, you're the one that needs to provide an actual reason. I'll happily discuss with LuigiManiac if he desires in the future. TTN 21:19, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

PBS idents: We do not censor

I have put the first two logos back where they are -- removal of logos just because they scare someone is censorship (see Wikipedia:WikiProject Wikipedians against censorship). Please understand this -- the next time someone removes a logo on account of scaring, they will be officially warned; if they persist, they will be blocked. Wikimania in Atlanta!

Hi! I noticed your involvement on U.S. South-related articles, categories and WikiProjects, and I wanted to let you know about a bid we're formulating to get next year's Wikimania held in Atlanta! If you would like to help, be sure to sign your name to the "In Atlanta" section of the Southeast team portion of the bid if you're in town, or to the "Outside Atlanta" section if you still want to help but don't live in the city or the suburbs. If you would like to contribute more, please write on my talk page, the talk page of the bid, or join us at the #wikimania-atlanta IRC chat on freenode.org. Have a great day!

P.S. While this is a template for maximum efficiency, I would appreciate a note on my talk page so I know you got the message, and what you think. This is time-sensitive, so your urgent cooperation is appreciated. :) Mike H. I did "That's hot" first! 09:38, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Im not vandilazing it

[edit]

A pre-teen is aged 10-12. Not 8-12. Think of all the stuff on that article. Like knowing about sex. An 8-year-old doesn't need to know about that stuff. And about knowing what kind of jobs they want to get when they grow up. Normally a kid won't do that untill they are 11 or something. Man, a pre-teen is 10-12, not 8-12. --Mr. Comedian 22:21, 24 September 2007 (UTC) happy now! --Mr. Comedian 22:26, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry

[edit]

Hey, man. I'm sorry for getting all ticked at you. But I just got a question. Everyone I know personally says that a pre-teen is aged 10-12. Some even say 11-12. What makes you say that it's 8-12? --Mr. Comedian 20:28, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK. What does Afd stand for and to keep who up to what point? And I'm very curious on why you consider a pre-teen to be 8-12. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mr. Comedian (talkcontribs) 20:52, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK. But please tell me why you say that a pre-teen starts at age 8. --Mr. Comedian 20:59, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I'm sorry, honest. I would never intend to make people feel nervous, I'm very sorry. I call myself "Mr. Comedian" because I want to star on a sitcom that I made up when I grow up. I also want to make a sitcom based on my childhood when I grow up. I can also be funny at points, but they only seem to amuse kids. It's like, stupid humor. And I saw that page about my article for deletion. I was never really sure if it was 18 or 21 were you become an adult. But I love being a kid so I always did 21. I will always do under 18 as kids from now on, promise. --Mr. Comedian 21:12, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I still want to know why you say that 8 and 9 are pre-teens. I never heard of it before. I don't mean to make you nervous. I'm just very curious. --Mr. Comedian 21:37, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FYI

[edit]

Just so you know. I looked over that middle childhood on Afd thing. I am from the United States. The thing is that I'm just a kid, I thought it was 21 as the legal age. I'm not the only high-schooler that thinks(or for me: thought) that the legal age for adulthood was 21. Just so you know. --Mr. Comedian 22:47, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

KSI (Clan)

[edit]

The article KSI (Clan) has been speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This was done because the article seemed to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it did not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert notability may be deleted at any time. If you can indicate why the subject is really notable, you are free to re-create the article, making sure to cite any verifiable sources.

Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and for specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for musicians, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. NawlinWiki 22:51, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry -- no problem. NawlinWiki 23:01, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, size is definitely going to be an issue with this page. For #9, I think one picture in the top right would be sufficient, though I don't know who/what to use for it. For #5, I think one short paragraph would be sufficient. 1-2 sentences discussing what a centenarian is, 1-2 sentences discussing our inclusion criteria and 1-2 sentences describing the technical aspects of the list (how it's divided, what it means to have a bolded/italicized name etc.) should be sufficient.

The bigger issue is with the references. Even referencing properly two of the smaller sections, the size significantly increased. I imagine that it'll be around 200 KB if we properly reference all the entries. I'm not certain what to do about it really... maybe split it into different pages, but I can't think of any non-arbitrary way to split up the names. I was hoping to get this to FL status eventually, but I'm not sure that would happen if the page was that large. Cheers, CP 18:38, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

About Maria Diaz Cortes

[edit]

Dear friend: actually, she's sort of a hindrance, because Maria is living in sub-human conditions in a decayed area. But as far as I know, she owns a valid ID card stating her birthdate is Jan 4, 1892. Spanish ID cards are compulsorily created out of civil birth documents. There have been several confirmations of such a fact in credible Spanish media, but I don't know how to further confirm it. MaeseLeon (talk) 22:00, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

America more important than the rest of us?

[edit]

What is your basis for this most common use of NFL malarky? It's more popular in America of course but it is totally subjective to say the American use of NFL is the most common use of the term worldwide. Saying wikipedia has more links to NFL America is not adequate. The fact that NFL already links directly to the US NFL should suffice. No need to re emphasise your claim.--Play Brian Moore (talk) 20:46, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's because the NFL page was set up containing info on the American version first. Your most commonly tag is totally ridiculous. It's completely subjective. The term might most commonly mean NFL in the US but that doesn't mean it's the most common usage of the term. Why saying NFL most commonly refers to America is so important is not clear at all. My edit was perfectly fair in my opinion. Give my objective reasons as to why it wasn't? --Play Brian Moore (talk) 22:50, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Margaret (Madge) Russell, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Margaret (Madge) Russell. re: your recent change to Template:Afd top

[edit]

Can't we just deal with that kind of change to the page through common sense? Do we really have to spell out every possible exception like that? I am concerned that we are making our already serious problem with instruction creep worse.

If we do stick with that change, we need to clarify the clause with a link to the help page on changing your username. Otherwise, we risk 1) confusing new users who have never heard of a user changing their signature or 2) suggesting a new form of vandalism to someone who wouldn't otherwise have thought of messing with the signatures. Based on your editing record on Wikipedia, we thought you might be interested in participating. If chosen to participate, you will be compensated for your time. We estimate that most participants will spend an hour (over two weeks on your own time and from your own computer) on the study. An article you created is about to be deleted: tools which can help you

[edit]

The article you created, List of health topics (0-9) is about to be deleted from Wikipedia.

There is an ongoing debate about whether your article should be deleted here:

The faster your respond, the better chance the article you created can be saved. This is because deletion debates only stay open for a few days, and the first comments are usually the most important.

There are several tools and other editors who can help you keep the page from being deleted forever:

  1. You can list the page up for deletion on Article Rescue Squadron. If you need help listing your page, add a comment on the Article Rescue Squadron talk page.
  2. You can request a mentor to help explain to you all of the complex rules that editors use to get a page deleted, here: Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User. But don't wait for a mentor to respond on the deletion page.
  3. When try to delete a page, veteran editors love to use a lot of rule acronyms. Don't let these acronyms intimidate you.
Here is a list of your own acronyms you can use yourself: WP:Deletion debate acronyms which may support the page you created being kept.
Acronyms in deletion debates are sometimes incorrectly used, or ignore rules or exceptions.
  4. You can merge the article into a larger article.

If your page is deleted, you still have many options available. travb (talk) 19:27, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Request to move article Sesame incomplete

[edit]

You recently filed a request at Wikipedia:Requested moves to move the page Sesame to a different title - however your request is either incomplete or has been contested for being controversial, and has been moved to the incomplete and contested proposals section. Requests that remain incomplete will be removed after five days.

Please make sure you have completed all three of the following:

  1. Added {{move|NewName}} at the top of the talk page of the page you want moved, replacing "NewName" with the new name for the article. This creates the required template for you there.
  2. Added a place for discussion at the bottom of the talk page of the page you want to be moved. This can easily be accomplished by adding {{subst:RMtalk|NewName|reason for move}} to the bottom of the page, which will automatically create a discussion section there.
  3. Added {{subst:RMlink|PageName|NewName|reason for move}} to the top of today's section here.

If you need any further guidance, please leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Requested moves or contact me on my talk page. –Drilnoth (TC) 19:23, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That way we can all discuss it on the talkpages, so that we don't end up losing valuable info if it is totally deleted in the near future. Rafablu88 20:32, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed move from Nonagram to Enneagram

[edit]

Re: Talk:Nonagram#Requested_move. Before moving nonagram to enneagram, please see extensive discussion at Talk:Enneagram.

99% of those typing in "enneagram" will expect to go to Enneagram of Personality or Fourth Way Enneagram. Moving Enneagram to Nonagram and making Enneagram a disambiguation page was agreed as the best solution. Cheers, Esowteric+Talk 18:28, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good afternoon. I've closed this debate on a procedural basis, as you did not offer a particular policy-based reason for having the article deleted. You might wish to have a look at the Deletion Policy for specific reasons one might wish to delete an article before re-nominating this one. I add that I had to format the talk page when I posted the old AFD notice; you might get further by discussing the issue you have with the article on its talk page, or on that of a related wikiproject. Or, you might have a look at WP:SOFIXIT, which is commonly cited in deletion debates; if you see a problem that can easily be fixed, you might find it easier to do it yourself. In this case, you can make the appropriate category, if you like. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. Best, UltraExactZZ Said ~ Did 21:11, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I totally removed

Quintuple, however, is a relatively modern coinage modeled after quadruple, as are further words in the series where -(t)uple has become a suffix.

because it was vague, pejorative, and in at least one natural sense of the words, flat wrong.

  • quintuple is attested from 16th-century in English and 13th-century in Latin. These are not modern and relatively modern is misleading.
  • Since quadruplex is itself post-classical, and quadruplus is also 13th century. the implied distinction of correctness is crankish nonsense.
  • Further words in the series have -t- where the Latin cardinal does, and not otherwise; look up decuple.

I have now spent more time explaining this than I did fixing it. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 19:28, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is List of centenarians. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of centenarians (3rd nomination). Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:07, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I didn't vandalize anything. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.107.154.58 (talk) 14:29, 8 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Christine Jorgensen was in fact a guy. He may have undergone sex reassignment surgery, but his chromosones remained 100% male. Having parts removed, others altered, and taking hormones to encourage other changes does not in fact change your gender. He was born a man and he died a man.

Vandalism would require a deliberate mischievous or malicious destruction or damage of property. Or in this case, a wiki entry. That is not what I did. Your rules are draconian and honesty clearly is not wikipedia's goal here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.107.154.58 (talk) 15:08, 8 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Did you know that, despite the fact that this edit of yours had lasted without complaint for over three and a half years, that you are now being called crass? Amazing. 98.82.6.106 (talk) 13:25, 17 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey GG, I went to Sesame Street for my daily editing, and found that all of a sudden, it shrunk! I went, whoa, what happened here, and then discovered that you had created a new article! As Elmo would say, Yahhh! Christine's so proud of you!!! ;) You actually had the Pride (cue Goo Goo Dolls) [5] to do that, something I couldn't bring myself to do. That's awesome. You should think about nominating yourself for a DYK; the more The Show is on the front page, the better, I always say.

I do think, though, that eventually we should include a summary on the parent article, perhaps when we're finished with the research for it. You might have noticed that I'm spending about 1 1/2 hours each morning adding/improving Sesame Street and its ancillaries. What I'm doing is combing through all the major sources I have and adding the information I've missed the first time. Right now, I'm on the Davis book, and then I'll start on the big huge anniversary book (Giklow), and then some articles and miscellaneous sources. It's gonna take a while, but I think it's worth it because the end result will be amazing. I think what you did yesterday had done much to improve the mommy article, which was so huge and clunky before. So I quote the little red guy again: Yahhh! ;) Christine (talk) 12:53, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, GG, it's me again. I wanted to update you on my slow progress in improving Sesame Street. I've taken your suggestion to heart, and am now working on shortening it. I'm doing that by taking the content about the formative and summative research done on The Show to a sandbox (User:Figureskatingfan/Sesame Street sandbox). Then I intend to do some copyediting and get the content improved to the point that I can create a new article out of it. Then I'll summarize everything in the main article, which should make you happy. And you know I live to do that! ;) Anyway, thought you'd like to know. Talk: Walt Disney Animation Studios

[edit]

Hey there. Saw your response to a post on Talk:Walt Disney Animation Studios. You're of course correct, but I wanted to give you a heads-up about this anon. The edit style is very similar to a Disney-article vandal that pops up every now and again (fortunately, not the lord-high Disney vandal of all time). If you'll notice, the sentence posted is in the past tense, yet references Thanksgiving 2012. This anon does occasionally do constructive edits, but at the same time has a nasty habit of posting hoax sequels and things like that. Again, the edit style is usually the same--sentences in past tense describing future events. If you see anything else similar to this, especially in actual articles, I'm sure you'll take the appropriate action. Thanks for all your work on the project. --McDoobAU93 18:25, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi GG, wanted you to know (if you haven't already noticed on your watchlist) that I've finally completed forking content from this article. The end result: four new articles, three DYKs (with one pending), and a significantly shorter article. It's still long--56 kilobytes--but it's much shorter than before. I think that it's going to be a longer article naturally, anyway. I'd still like to add one short, summarized section (Sesame Street media). It's also in need of a good copyedit, but even without it, I still think it's GA-quality. Personally, I'm very proud of what we've been able to accomplish. It still has some ways to go, but it's much-improved since the sad days when it was delisted as an FA. Let me know what you think! Christine (talk) 12:59, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

release date of the next microsoft office?

[edit]

I'm new to wiki so I don't know all the tricks yet. In the Microsoft Office article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Office) it is stated: "Microsoft Office 15 will be released most likely in 2013." However, there is no reference given - thus it is pure speculation. I tried to remove it but it reappears after some time automatically. Why is that? I have also checked google for new information - no news so far on the next office. I also started a new section on the Discussion page of the article. To cut a longs story short: How can I remove the text? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ambition44 (talkcontribs) 21:08, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I can't remember all the terms I used and to be honest I don't think that it's really important at the moment. Rather I think it is quite surprising that there is actually office 2013 mentioned in the article WITHOUT any reference at all. How can that be? Maybe I should ask differently: what terms do you want me to use? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ambition44 (talkcontribs) 22:11, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there. I totally sympathize with you, trying to deal with this repeat offender anon. That said, it is acceptable for users, including IPs, to delete warnings from their talk pages. Deleting them doesn't make them go away for two reasons: (1) deleting it is generally translated as having seen it, so they can't plead ignorance (it's kinda like those "you opened the shrink-wrap so you've agreed to the end-user license agreement" stickers on software); and (2), a patrolling admin looking into a report will almost certainly look through the edit history of the page and see the IP deleting stuff, as if to cover their tracks. I left a final warning regarding the IPs posts on Talk:Walt Disney Animation Studios, and I fully expect them to delete it, so if they do this again, don't worry about the warning and go ahead and report them to WP:AIV. Best of luck, and thanks for helping keep the talk pages constructive. --McDoobAU93 00:34, 7 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi, I have answered your question on both my talkpage, and my edit summary of reverting your revival of the article. Blake (Talk·Edits) 15:23, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Even stubs must have evidence of notability. For notability, it must have significant coverage in third party reliable sources. Blake (Talk·Edits) 17:06, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Please see WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS, which is a counter argument to everything you are saying. You can't say that every 650 Pokemon deserve articles just because Pikachu and Charizard do. Blake (Talk·Edits) 17:16, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to expand it, then fine, but it won't be kept without reliable sources covering it in a non-trivial way. I will give you this weekend to expand it, and then if it still doesn't meet guidelines, I will bring it to AfD where consensus will delete it. Blake (Talk·Edits) 17:32, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Also, yes, there are a ton of Pokemon articles on Wikipedia. That is because a few people and I have found significant coverage in third party reliable sources for them. The ones that do not have the required sources are merged in a list. Blake (Talk·Edits) 17:52, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There are actually 20% of the species split. Yes, there is a Pokemon Wikia, but what they do has nothing to do with what we do. Blake (Talk·Edits) 18:03, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

My experience is that comments telling editors what not to do not work (they do not get read) unless they are at exactly the place the editor is likely to make the change. A few lines away is not good enough. But if you want to be the one repeatedly reverting the addition of (6,8,10) because it's too far away and because they don't stop to think that a statement about all numbers being even might apply to the specific numbers (6,8,10), go ahead. —David Eppstein (talk) 18:47, 26 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Assuming good faith

[edit]

Hey there ... I saw you had undone some changes made to List of Pixar films, but in your edit summary you listed them as "vandalism". While I completely agree that the edits should have been undone (primarily because they were uncited), in the Wikipedia sense they weren't really vandalism. Most likely it was the work of an over-eager fan who believes that's what's coming out or heard someone talk about it on a Pixar fan forum or something to that effect; in other words, they were trying to be helpful, not malicious. Now, if they kept adding it, then the edits become disruptive, which is indeed considered vandalism. A simple warning to the IP should take care of things, along with explaining that such edits should be sourced.

Just a friendly suggestion ... happy editing!

--McDoobAU93 20:39, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

GG, I almost put one of those mean and obnoxious warnings on your talk page! I can't believe that you didn't know better--that you don't remove such a large amount of content on any article without discussing it on its talk page first. So I reverted the article to the version before your changes. If you believe that the article would be better without the sections you removed, that's fine; I respect your opinion and all, but I wish you would've brought it up for discussion first. And then I could disagree with you. Remember, the previous version is a FA. I mean, I'm all for forking articles to make them more readable, since that's what I did to Sesame Street (another FA), but I think the discussion about The Show's development is an integral and fascinating part of its history. Please remember to bring major changes like that to the talk page, as per WP policy. Christine (talk) 05:42, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Reverting edits

[edit]

Greetings ... while I'm glad you're helping with the various Disney film articles, I do have to take umbrage with your edit summaries. For example, when you reverted this set of changes, you labeled it as vandalism. This is nothing of the sort. These edits are attempting to improve the article, even if they contain errors. Vandalism is much more narrowly defined than changing something that winds up not being fully supported. One of Wikipedia's top policies is to assume good faith; that is, assume that the editor just wanted to add information, but isn't fully up on how such information should be vetted by sources.

In the future, please refrain from randomly throwing around the term "vandalism" when reverting edits. You run the risk of running off potentially good editors who simply made the mistake of not including a source. That's easily fixed with constructive notes and assistance and without branding them as vandals. --McDoobAU93 14:59, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

To answer your question from my talk page: Here is a good example of a good-faith edit that should be reverted because no source for that statement was provided. I reverted the edit here, then left a note on the user's talk page here explaining why I reverted it and what I would be looking for in order for it to remain. This editor certainly is not a vandal.
That said, if they continued to try and add it back without citation, despite being told by myself and other editors, then the edits become disruptive, which is one form of vandalism. Vandalism is intended to do harm to the encyclopedia, and with that particular edit, I didn't see that intent. For that matter, in most cases, we're supposed to assume good-faith at first, anyway.
I'm hoping that answers your question, but if you have other concerns, you can leave them here and I'll respond.

[edit]

Thank you for trying to keep Wikipedia free of vandalism. However, one or more edits you labeled as vandalism, such as the edit at List of Pixar films, are not considered vandalism under Wikipedia guidelines. Wikipedia has a stricter definition of the word "vandalism" than common usage, and mislabeling edits as vandalism can discourage newer editors. Please read Wikipedia:NOTVAND for more information on what is and is not considered vandalism. Thank you. The edits you reverted, while not necessarily beneficial, were all but certainly meant in good faith. You need to assume good faith whenever possible; we lose too many potentially beneficial editors who come here and make a change they think is good but get bitten and called vandals. I can look at my first edits and see where I'd have reverted them, and I'm sure I can do the same thing with you, as well. So please stop labeling almost every revert you make as vandalism ... or, to put it simply, stop crying "wolf". -- McDoobAU93 17:45, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Waste of time

[edit]

Copy of message you posted on MOS talk page:

Look at recent edits of Alexis Reich. Also look at the talk page. Any comments?? Georgia guy (talk) 17:06, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

Looking at the history of recent edits of that article, I see a number of good faith edits by another editor, with proper edit summary explanations, reverted by you, with summary: "Revert several recent edits; go to the talk page of WP:MOS". And 5 minutes after you posted the Talk:MOS message, you reverted that editor again with the comment: "go to the talk page of WP:MOS if you need discussion". The edit summary is the proper place to explain your edits and if not enough space, add "see talk" to your comments and continue on the article talk page, or post a note or question to the other editor's talk page.
The main reason I reverted your edit on Talk:MOS because it is a waste of time to post there. If you will look at the other editor's edit count, it is very apparent that that editor is only interested in editing articles. In the past more than 5 years, more than 1000 article edits, but only 1 talk page edit. Not very talkative. None of us is getting paid to be here. Some people like to spend their time editing articles, and some like to spend their time talking. Most are somewhere in between. Well, I see it's time for me to go spend some time and money grocery shopping. Happy editing! —Telpardec  TALK  01:14, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Actually it was an ip that misused your talk page signature. I reverted the edit as it seemed to be a bit of spam, but it did confuse me a bit at first. Just wanted to let you know I did that, just in case you have a follower, so you can keep track of a potential pattern.--JOJ Hutton 00:21, 17 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree with what you're doing at AnitiChess, and the way you're doing it. (Like ignoring BRD and mischaracterizing a discussion as though a consensus was in your favor when clearly that wasn't the case). I suggest you stop. (Otherwise, I might be apt to pick up a new interest re inappropriate gender-neutrality language introductions in WP articles generally.) Ihardlythinkso (talk) 16:23, 30 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, looking at your contributions, I noted you reverted Ihardlythinkso's own Talk Page. You have no right to do this; Ihardlythinkso can delete whatever he wants on his own personal Talk Page, including reasonable discussions, administrator warnings, or even pointless bickering over a single word in a novelty chess article. Re: Office 13 redirect

[edit]

Hi, with regards to this edit, I can understand your rationale in redirecting the heading back to Office 2010. The point is that, Office 03 directs to Office 2003 and Office 07 directs to Office 2007. Office 10 is a version number, so it's reasonable for it to refer to Office #10.

For the case here, there is no Office version #13. The original redirect is reasonable if there was no Office 2013, but now that it does, Office 13 more explicitly refers to Office 2013 instead of Office #14 (of which it already has Office 14 to redirect to). Your take on this? NoNews! 13:40, 31 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Show me

[edit]

Since I see you've taken up 'gender-neutralizing' chess articles again, and I believe you think any gender-specific pronoun can (and must) somehow be eliminated, based on the mistaken notion they are offensive or excluding or discriminatory, how about a little example to test your moxie? ... The following sentence appears in article Grünfeld Defence, I'd like to see how you would 'neutralize' it, without making it stand out in weirdness like a sore thumb to the audience of millions of players in the chess world:

White can develop his pieces in a number of ways in the Exchange Variation.

Ihardlythinkso (talk) 00:41, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You responded on my user Talk that it can't be changed, because it is a direct quotation. (Where do you get that from? Who is being quoted? If I'm not mistaken, it is *not* a quotation at all.) Ihardlythinkso (talk) 00:53, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Quotations are usually associated with quotation marks, or blockquotes, and a reference. The sentence given above is not a quotation of any kind. (Curious, what caused you to think it was quoted material?) Ihardlythinkso (talk) 01:30, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Now you've told me on my Talk two things: (1) you didn't understand the sentence above came from a Wikipedia article (even though I stated above the sentence is in article Grünfeld Defence!), and (2) you didn't seem to know or understand I was addressing you individually, even though I asked you a straight-forward question on your Talk above. And that you "don't want" to discuss individually with me the question, needing to chase off to find other "good Wikipedians" to ... whatever (reply for you? give help to you? give answer to me? what? who knows!).

I took it for granted you would be able to form your own opinion and respond to a straight-forward one-on-one question. Obviously, you've shown me those assumptions were in complete error. Amazing. (You have the confidence to make gender-neutral changes to articles, even edit-war over them, but when asked to discuss the difficulty of an example of gender-neutral changes, you fold.) Dear User:Georgia guy, I was contacted by several concerned individuals on en.wiki concerning your mentorship. Luckily, I am free this month and have agreed to be your mentor. My name is Thorkill and I have successfully mentored many troubled young people here, including User:Maoririder. Say hello to Thor's Hammer! GNL

[edit]

I was just bringing it in line with the rest of the article; consensus seemed to be developing on the talk page that gender-specific references were acceptable in chess. "the objective of the players is to lose all their pieces" was neither clear nor precise, so I trust my edit was at least an improvement. --McGeddon (talk) 15:35, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not saying that I insist the sentence be gender-specific, I'm just saying that "in which the objective of each player is to lose all of his pieces" is at least an improvement on the ambiguous "the objective of the players is to lose all their pieces". I agree that a clear gender-neutral wording would be even better, and if you want to write one, go for it. I refrained from doing so myself because the matter seemed to be under discussion on the talk page. --McGeddon (talk) 15:44, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Response from Mentor

[edit]

Why yes, (Georgia guy, if I may call you that?) perhaps I do come off as a bit brusque at times and I apologise for any seeming abrasiveness, as this is not my intent as your mentor to do that. I wish for us to have a happy, productive relationship in making this encyclopedia a better place. I understand your concerns and any time you have any questions for me, just ask. Yours truly, Roxette Fanatic (talk) 15:58, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'd advise ignoring User:Roxette Fanatic entirely. They appear to be a brand new account created only to "mentor" you, and their bizarre and aggressive take on mentorship and "daily vandalism reversion quotas" has absolutely no basis in how Wikipedia actually works. They do not seem to be here to help you. --McGeddon (talk) 16:02, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, I am here to help you. Second of all, was User:McGeddon using gender-neutral pronouns in the above sentence? "He" should have just said "he," no? Roxette Fanatic (talk) 16:06, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Roxette Fanatic is certainly familiar with a lot more Wikipedia terminology than a genuinely new user would be, but we should always assume good faith about potential sockpuppeting. If you're uncomfortable with their attitude, start by just asking them on their talk page to stop "mentoring" you. If they continue with the strange demands and insults, I'd suggest raising the problem for administrator attention on WP:ANI. Let me know if you need any help or have any questions. --McGeddon (talk) 16:12, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Not a forum

[edit]

You were speculating on whether or not a sentence meant there was going to be a "Super Mario Galaxy 3" and if the answer will be known at the end of 2013. That is not discussion on improving the article in its current state. That is discussion about the subject itself and it is reserved for forums, which is why I removed it. --ThomasO1989 (talk) 17:25, 5 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Asking "is this game probably Super Mario Galaxy 3???" is not discussing potential improvement to the article, it's discussing the subject matter and being speculative. And nowhere in your discussion did you ask when the sentence would be need to be updated. Either way, you already gave yourself the answer. Why would it need further discussion? --ThomasO1989 (talk) 17:57, 5 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Of course, and that will happen when the time comes; there are quite a few editors, including myself, who are willing to take the opportunity to update the article when that new information becomes available. Until then, we can only say that it is simply a "new 3D Mario game for Wii U." Any discussion what any of its other properties or release date is simply speculation at this point. --ThomasO1989 (talk) 18:11, 5 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's a given that the article will be updated with new information when it becomes available. I personally think that discussion should be limited to how an article can be improved now rather than discussing what information might come and could be introduced. Premature thoughts don't add anything to improving the article now. Please see WP:CRYSTAL. --ThomasO1989 (talk) 18:35, 5 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

New York City

[edit]

Hi Georgia guy,

I noticed that you reverted my addition of a hatnote to the New York City article, saying that the hatnote wasn't necessary. I would argue that it is necessary because there are plenty of cities called "New York", and New York (city) redirects to New York City. A hatnote should therefore link to the list of other cities, which is located at New York (disambiguation). Would you disagree?
