Catholic University may mean any university founded and operated by the Roman Catholic Church. By a census of the Vatican's Congregation for Catholic Education, the total number of Catholic universities and university-level institutes around the world is 1,358.

However, the following list counts only those universities and institutes having "Catholic" in their school names. In this list, for example, there are merely six schools in the United States among its more than 230 catholic colleges and universities such as Georgetown University, University of Notre Dame, College of Holy Cross, etc. Likewise, India has only one, in spite of there being nearly three-hundred catholic colleges and institutes including Loyola College, Chennai.
