Yeh Hai Mohabbatein

Yeh Hai Chahatein (transl. This is desired love) is an Indian drama television series produced by Ekta Kapoor for Star Plus.[1] A spin-off to Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, the show premiered on 19 December 2019 and stars Sargun Kaur Luthra and Abrar Qazi.[2][3]

Plot

In Delhi, gynaecologist Preesha Srinivasan is raising her nephew, Saransh, as a single mother, after her sister, Mahima, dies during childbirth. Saransh is a fan of Rudraksh Khurana, a rockstar who doesn't believe in love and is detested by Preesha.

Yuvraj fakes being in love with Preesha to be promoted as a judge by Gopal. After finding out that Saransh is Rudraksh’s nephew, Rajeev's son, Yuvraj, blackmails him for money. On Preesha's and Yuvraj's wedding day, Yuvraj leaves the marriage and kills Rajeev, who had learned the truth about Saransh. Preesha takes the murder blame on herself because she likes Yuvraj. Whilst, Rudraksh vows to avenge his brother's death. He learns that Saransh is Rajeev's son and believes that Preesha is Saransh's birth mother and Rajeev's ex-lover.

Yuvraj, who gets the promotion, sentences Preesha to be hanged after being bribed by Rudraksh. After learning that Saransh will get 50 lakhs per month till he reaches 21, as planned by Rajeev, Yuvraj decides to legally adopt Saransh to have a luxurious future by marrying Preesha. Rudraksh takes Yuvraj's place on their wedding day and marries Preesha to get full custody of Saransh as revenge and his brother's last wish. Preesha thinks of the well being of her son and hands Saransh's full custody to Rudraksh. Preesha is proved innocent with the help of her father and agrees to stay in the Khurana house for Saransh. To stop the child care department from taking Saransh, Rudraksha and Preesha act as a happy couple.

In the pretence of faking a romance for the sake of everyone and Saaransh, they begin to have feelings for each other.

Yuvraj joins hands with Rahul to ruin Rudraksh, unaware that Preesha is close friends with Neerja. Rudraksh understands his feelings for Preesha but fails to express them. Rahul creates a misunderstanding between Rudrakash and Preesha, but due to his love for Preesha, Rudraksha struggles to keep her away even though he tortures her. Seeing Neerja trying to aid Preesha in proving her innocence, Yuvraj plots to kill her, but instead, Neerja slips into a coma.

Rudraksh and Keerti, Rudraksha's new co-singer, leave for a concert with the family, where he tries to make Preesha jealous of her. After Keerti is found dead, the families DNA samples are taken, and Sharda confesses her connection with Keerti, clearing that she had tried to save Keerti from dying but could not save her. Rudraksh discovers that Preesha isn't Saransh's biological mother and, despite their attempt, Sharda is arrested; however, Rudraksh finds a video that proves Sharda innocent. Neerja awakes from her coma, and Rahul confesses his evil deeds. Rudraksh scolds Rahul and goes after Preesha, apologising and confessing his love to her passionately in the rain.

Rudraksh apologises to Preesha in front of both their families and touches her feet. Preesha says they both will trust each other henceforth. Rudra and Preesha go off for their honeymoon too ooty to start their relationship afresh. On the first night Preesha misunderstands and thinks Rudra orders condoms for them and makes him sleep on the couch. The next night after touring preesha gets drunk and they both share a passionate dance. Their honeymoon gets interrupted with the return of mahima, saransh’s Biological mother.

Mahima is revealed to be alive with the secret intention of taking Saransh and receiving his trust fund. Saransh, however, refuses to accept Mahima as his mother. While attempting to steal money to get rid of Mahima, Saransh falls from the window and is admitted to the hospital. Mahima reveals the truth about Saransh and her relation with the Khuranas. Balraj regrets his actions and accepts Saransh.

After Saransh recovers, Mahima files a custody case and wins his custody. Preesha learns Mahima had lied about her past and works with Rudraksh and Yuvraj to expose her. She pretends to betray Rudraksha and fakes her marriage with Yuvraj, while Rudraksha pretends to marry Mahima to stop her from leaving with Saransh.

Preesha confesses her love to Rudraksha, and they share a kiss at Christmas, whilst the couple works together to expose Mahima. However, Mahima finds out about their plan through Yuvraj and continuously destroys the evidence against her. She switches Rudraksh with a doppelganger, Bhuvan, in the hopes of ruining the Khurana family. She makes Preesha misunderstand that she slept with fake Rudra which breaks preesha’s heart and she starts hating Rudra.

Balraj learns the truth and is murdered by Mahima and Bhuvan just as real Rudraksh returns, who is arrested. Preesha then realises the imposter did not have real Rudraksh’s birthmark. Ahana and Preesha collaborate to expose the doppelganger and Mahima after Mahima takes over the MD of the Khurana Empire, which she thinks belongs to her. Having succeeded in catching Bhuvan and exposing Mahima, Rudraksh is released while Mahima is arrested.

Rudraksh and Preesha finally seem happy. Both have a possessive moment with each other where Rudra pulls her hair and kisses her saying that nobody will separate them again, and she agrees.

Rudraksh later finds his birth mother, Sulochana, and her son Kabir faking his disability. It brings them to live with them unaware that the two are after the property papers and Khurana's wealth after Balraj kicked out Sulochana, having learned she had an affair. Preesha learns the truth about them and tries to reveal it to Rudra but keeps failing. Meanwhile Rudra tells Preesha that he wants to have a child with her and they need to focus on their relationship.

Kabir tricks Ahana into helping them obtain the property by marrying him to receive custody of Saransh. A doctor assists Preesha to expose Kabir's fake disability to everyone, but Kabir has his goon CC kidnap Rudraksh. Mahima escapes jail with help from one of CC's men and kidnaps Rudraksh. CC kidnaps Saransh to trade with Mahima, but she kills him and takes Saransh. Preesha goes undercover and saves Rudraksh and Saransh. Mahima is caught but escapes and flees.

The family moves to Goa. Preesha, with Sharda's support, plots to stop Kabir and Ahana's marriage. Preesha stops Ahana and Kabir's marriage and instead gets Ahana married to Yuvraj. Ahana flees to London. Having learnt that Yuvraj married Ahana as per Preesha's plan, Rudraksh becomes upset with her while Mishka and Kabir elope and get married. However, Rudraksh and Preesha sort things out and reunite when she drowns in the pool, he saves her and gives her CPR. Both share a moment where they realise they can’t live without each other.

Meanwhile, Mishka and Kabir get custody of Saransh for his trust fund, and Rudraksh-Preesha gathers evidence against them. Kabir and Mishka kidnap Saransh and demand ransom; however, Mishka threatens to blow herself and Saransh if the police are called. Rudra almost manages to convince her to stop. However, things take a turn when Preesha brings the police, and after having no other choice, Mishka blasts the car in which Saransh is in. As a result, Saransh and Mishika are presumed dead, and Rudraksha blames Preesha for the same as she calls the police. She blames him for not trusting her against his mother & brother earlier.

Rudraksha-Preesha decides to part ways and signs divorce papers, which will take some months to legalise. Meanwhile, Rudraksha promises to never sing again after losing his son, and Preesha hallucinating Saransh almost falls off a cliff but is saved by Armaan Thakur.

6 months later

Preesha is living her life with Armaan Thakur and his daughter Avni in Goa. On Avni's birthday, Armaan asks Vasudha to teach her singing and dancing. Meanwhile, Rudraksha now lives in Delhi with his two mothers Sharda and Sulochana, having lost his entire wealth and Khurana house as they are locked away in a trust fund Saransh's demise. He works as a manager in a hotel in Delhi, where he meets Armaan's sister, Devika Thakur who is doing her internship in Delhi and staying in the hotel where Rudra works as "R.K", the hotel manager. Rudra finds out that Preesha lives with Devika’s family and decides to go to Goa to meet her.

Rudra and Preesha finally see each other in Goa and get emotional. But, unfortunately, Rudra misunderstands that Preesha has moved on, and they have a bitter confrontation at the party where he roughly dances with her and hurls accusations at her.

Rudra and Preesha pretend not to know each other in front of the Thakurs. Rudra bonds with Avni as he had saved her life earlier. After being disturbed by seeing Rudra, Preesha runs away crying and Rudra corners her. He drags her into the bathroom forcefully and they have a passionate confrontation. He asks her how she moved on from their life so easily and she lies saying she has. After that at the party, Rudra makes Preesha jealous and proposes to Devika. Preesha rejects Armaans proposal. Rudra tries to kiss Devika in front of Preesha but she drags Devika away visibly upset. Rudra gets happy seeing Preesha still gets jealous and cares about him.

The next morning Preesha fakes affection in front of Rudra towards Armaan. Rudra does the same towards Devika. They confront each other in the kitchen. Preesha requests him to stop playing with Devika’s feelings and he’s asks her if it’s bothering her. Rudra asks Preesha if his touch still affects her and they share a moment.

Rudra convinces Preesha to return to Delhi by taunting her where she remembers all their memories. Rudra manages to get half the Khurana house back. Preesha gets affected seeing Rudra- Devika roka’s ceremony, rudra then locks Preesha up with him in the storeroom where he corners her and says he will cancel the wedding as soon as she confesses she still loves him and is getting jealous.

The wedding festivities begin with Rudra and Preesha constantly making each other jealous. Rudra challenges Preesha that she will stop the wedding herself and will admit to everyone’s she’s his wife. Goons attack Preesha, Rudra saves her, they have an emotional moment where Preesha almost gives in yet Armaan catches them in a compromising position and gets suspicious. Rudra and Preesha keep having close encounters.

Rudra finds out Mishka is still alive and confronts her and Ahaana who say that Saaransh died yet Rudra suspects they are lying. Preesha finds out and vows to find their son together. Rudra and Preesha follow Ahaana and Mishka. They decide to rent an apartment together to spy on them.

Development and premiere

In June 2017, producer Ekta Kapoor revealed her plan for a spin-off of Yeh Hai Mohabbatein however stated, "I wanted to make a spin off of Yeh Hai Mohabbatein but it’s not working out with the story line."[5] The reports of the spin-off in making was then announced in April 2018.[6] It was supposed to premiere in the same year but was delayed as the story was not finalized.[7] Then, it was reported to premiere in June 2019 and the casting for it was going on while Aakanksha Singh and Karan Vohra were reported as the leads.[8][7] But it was scrapped in July 2019.[9] In September 2019, the series was revived and fresh casting sessions began.[10] Sargun Kaur Luthra was cast as Dr. Preesha Srinivasan and Abrar Qazi was cast as Rudraksh Khurana.[11] Talking about the series, producer Ekta Kapoor said Yeh Hai Chahatein deals with another social issue. It’s often said that it’s easier for men with children to get married again, but very tough for a woman with a child to find a suitable groom."[12]

Release

The first promo of the series was released on 27 November 2019 where Sargun Kaur Luthra and Vidhaan Sharma were introduced by Divyanka Tripathi and Karan Patel as Dr. Preesha Srinivasan and Saransh Khurana.[13] The next promo was released on 16 December 2019 featuring Abrar Qazi, Luthra and Vidhaan Sharma. The series premiered on 19 December 2019 on StarPlus.[14]

Casting

Sargun Kaur Luthra was selected to play Dr. Preesha Srinivasan's character.[15] Karan Wahi was approached to play Rudraksh Khurana, but Abrar Qazi was signed by the production team.[16] Zebby Singh was potentially going to play Yuvraj Pillai before the role went to Siddharth Shivpuri.[17] Parul Chauhan was supposed to play Ahana, but Aishwarya Sakhuja replaced her.[18] When the shooting resumed after the COVID-19 outbreak, in early July 2020, Vidhaan Sharma was replaced by Yagya Bhasin as Saaransh and Gulshan Pandey replaced Vijay Kashyap as Gopal.[19]

Luthra stated that she took inspiration from Neena Gupta for her role.[20] Talking about playing a mother for the first time, she said, “When I was told that I will be playing a mother, I wasn’t apprehensive at all. My only worry was that i am very young and I had to look mature on the screen which was a challenge. The team has helped me a lot to help me look a certain age and moreover with my body language to portray this character. Even Vidhaan (my on-screen son), has helped bring out the best in me. More than mother-son, we are like friends off the screen.”[21]

Sakhuja was brought in for the negative role of Ahana which is her first negative role. Speaking about it she said, "I have auditioned for a lot of Balaji shows and whenever I auditioned for negative roles I was told I look very positive. So, when I bagged this role, I asked them why now? They said eventually you will get to know as to why we have chosen you, and I understand because they like to surprise their audience and that's exactly what they are doing. I was figuring how to go about it, but my team is helping. After every two sentences out of habit, I go into the positive zone but I have people to handhold me and help me."[22]

In May 2021 Mister Supranational India Altamash Faraz was cast as Armaan Thakur.[23]

Filming

Set in Delhi, the series is mainly filmed in Film City, Mumbai. On 3 August 2020, the shoot could not happen due to heavy rains in Mumbai and was cancelled.[24]

On 13 April 2021, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced a sudden curfew which would be beginning from 15 April. On 14 April, Ekta Kapoor and Balaji Telefilms decided to move all their shows’ shooting to their sets at Goa.[25]

Broadcast

The production and airing of the show was halted indefinitely in late March 2020 due to the COVID-19 outbreak in India.[26] The series was expected to resume on 1 April 2020 but could not and the series was last broadcast on 24 March 2020 airing its remaining episodes.[27][28][29] After three months, the filming of the series resumed on 27 June 2020 while the broadcast resumed on 13 July 2020.[30][31]
