The Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER)(Hindi:भारतीय विज्ञान शिक्षा एवं अनुसंधान संस्थान), and the related National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) are a group of premier institutes being created by the Government of India, through the Ministry of Human Resource Development (India) (MHRD), to promote education and research in the sciences. Five IISER's have been currently planned across the country in the following locations -- Kolkata in West Bengal, Pune in Maharashtra, Mohali in Punjab, Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh and Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala.[1] The financial outlay for each IISER is around Rs 500 crore for the first five years. The NISER is being set up in Bhubaneswar for a slightly higher outlay of 800 crores.

The IISERs at Kolkata, Pune, Mohali and Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) have started functioning from the Kolkata Extension Centre of IIT Kharagpur, NCL Pune campus, MGSIPA complex in Sector 26 Chandigarh and College of Engineering, Trivandrum campus respectively. In future they will function from their own campuses. The Campus of IISER Pune is under construction on 100 acres (0.40 km2) of land at Pashan, Pune. The Campus of IISER Kolkata is coming up over 250 acres (1.0 km2) of land at Haringhata, Kalyani near Kolkata. The first set of admissions through IIT-JEE and KVPY have been done and the teaching program at IISER Mohali has commenced from August 2007.

IISER Mohali will ultimately be located in Mohali, Punjab. The foundation stone of IISER, Kolkata was laid on July 11, 2006 and that of IISER Mohali in September, 2006 by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh. The foundation stone of IISER Pune was laid on April 1, 2010 by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh. NISER Bhubaneswar began functioning shortly after the foundation stone was laid down on August 28, 2006 by the Prime Minister. Unlike its sister institutions, the IISERs, NISER is being administered by the Department of Atomic Energy. A somewhat larger campus of 300 acres (1.2 km2) is planned.

Land for IISER Thiruvananthapuram (about 200 acres) is has been identified at Vithura, a picturesque town at the foothills of the Western Ghats. Vithura is located within 30 km from the city and is near to the famous tourist spot Ponmudi. The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), a new institute of the Department of Space, Govt, of India, will be within few kilometers from IISER.

Admissions

The first batch of around 80 students for integrated MS courses have already been admitted to the institutes at Kolkata and Pune, as well as NISER. Almost double number of students were admitted in the second batch. These students were selected through the highly competitive IIT-JEE. Furthermore, some students were selected from the IISc's KVPY and the Olympiad student list.[2] Students qualifying any of the following examinations will be eligible for admission-

  1. Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY)
  2. IITJEE - Those who feature in the regular merit list.

As of 2009 Admissions, the IISERs will not be accepting students who qualify through the olympiad route. Intake will only be through KVPY and IIT-JEE, for the batch of 2009.

From 2010 onwards IISER's are also taking in students who score well in their board exams.
