Filming

The filming began in Mumbai during August 2012. Some parts have also been shot in Oman.[4] Akshay Kumar will be playing the fictitious role of gangster Dawood Ibrahim. Kumar's character look was revealed on an reality show on Aapka Colors. It has also been reported that the film will feature an sequence with Kumar watching an Cricket match as shown in trailer released on 28th may 2013 but the match is between India and Pakistan at the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium in the '80s, is not been confirmed.[5]

Casting

The lead actor was firstly chosen to be played by Emraan Hashmi, who also appeared in the original film. However, director Milan Luthria was searching for an older actor, and hence chose Akshay Kumar. Kumar is to play the role of Shoaib Khan (Dawood Ibrahim). In February 2012, it was announced that there were two male leads in the film, and the second parallel to Kumar, was signed to Shahid Kapoor. However, in March 2012, it was finalized that Imran Khan was actually playing the second male lead.[6] Many female actors were considered for the female lead, including Illeana D'Cruz, Kareena Kapoor, Kangna Ranaut, Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, however in April 2012, it was reported that Sonakshi Sinha had been casted.[7]Sonali Bendre has also been roped in to play a leading character in the film.[8][9] The film will mark Sonali Bendre's first role since Shankar Dada MBBS. In November 2012, it was announced that the film is scheduled to release on Eid 2013.[10][11] TV actor Chetan Hansraj will also play a pivotal negative part in this film.

Controversies

Shah Rukh Khan starrer Chennai Express and Akshay Kumar starrer Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2 have been abandoned by Pakistani distributors and exhibitors in the interest of four of their films releasing on the same day.[12]
