WikiProject Alternative Views

Hi meco! I just wanted to point you to this thread over at WikiProject Alternative Views, where a user was asking about assessment. Regards, Tim Smith (talk) 05:56, 4 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I did a bad thing

I did a "bad" thing and deleted your second and third comments from the Shehrbanot talk page (i.e. everything except the welcome box). I have never deleted comments from a user's talk page before, and I will not do anything if you revert my edit. I just believed that, given the extraordinary relevant facts of the situation, the general tone of your comments was not quite appropriate (but would be perfectly fine in any kind of a normal situation), and our work building an encyclopaedia would carry on more smoothly if those comments simply disappeared. Again, I will not revert a revert, nor blank any further comments, but I think after some reflection you too may find that leaving that talk page as is would be in the best interest of both that user (i.e. emotional state) and the project. Cheers, Heroeswithmetaphors (talk) 04:54, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your notifying me of your action. I'm reading the above after having reverted you and posted a note on your talk page. __meco (talk) 16:11, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bad Sourcing

Hi, Thank you for the suggestion for this edit but;

  1. There is no mentioning of 27 times in your source [1]
  2. English source has precedence over than the one in a foreign language. I suggest you read Wikipedia:Verifiability#Non-English_sources

CFD edit

This edit of yours removed from the nomination an entire sentence (the one about Category:Capitalism) and in fact removed Category:Right-wing politics from the nomination listing altogether. When things like this are done, consternation results. Good Ol’factory (talk) 04:30, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that was a mistake. I should have watched my steps a bit more carefully. __meco (talk) 08:40, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No long-term harm done. I think the mystery of what was happening was stressing Hmains out, though! Good Ol’factory (talk) 08:59, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of that category is an admin action: as an administrator I am declining to block the user because their username is not a violation of the policy as I explained to you on my talk page. The only circumstances in which a non-admin should revert an admin action, such as this or a declined speedy deletion, for example, is in the case of a clear mistake. If you want to revert admins in other circumstances, please go to WP:RFA. If you still believe the username is a violation of the username policy, you may file at WP:RFC/N but, aside from being improper, re-adding the category will achieve nothing but the user lingering in the category until another admin decides to clean out the category, by which time any concern will more than likely be stale. Thanks, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:06, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, you haven't responded to my latest post on your talk page, and this username is a blatant violation of the username rules. Please respond to my previous post. __meco (talk) 23:11, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Because I missed it. My talk page is so busy it has to be archived more often than the admins' noticeboard. Since we're not going to agree amongst ourselves, I respectfully suggest that you take the matter to RFC/N, which is a venue set up to deal with exactly these kinds of disputes, but please don't keep re-adding the category, it only makes my job of cleaning out CAT:UAA more difficult. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:20, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Fine, you missed, However, I just reminded you of it, so could you please respond to it now and address the point I am making there? Sending me off to WP:RFC/N is fine, but it is not fine that I should have to do it because you don't do your job. __meco (talk) 23:30, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Cronology of reversed convictions in Norway

Åge Fjell was awarded less than $ 2 million, for the 7 years he spent in prison.

Other wrongful convictions have occured in Norway. What might be an appropriate title for an article mentioning various of these convictions/persons. "Cronology of reversed convictions in Norway"? --Blåplugg (talk) 06:28, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think the term "list" might be better than the word "cronology". Also, you might want to consult the Norway WikiProject because I'm in a period of very low Wikipedia activity. __meco (talk) 11:39, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Low priority Norway-related items

A church in Miami that is financed/guaranteed by Norway?

In Miami there is a church under construction — "Sjømannskirken Kronprinsesse Mette-Marits kirke — Scandinavian Churrch & Center" (see today's Aftenposten on page 7, please).

  • Is the Norwegian name appropriate for an article on this wikipedia?
  • I wonder if any videos or movies will be shown there. Because she is known more as a video-person, rather than a book-person, and every sjømannskirke-has a library.

Hey! I noticed that you have previously reverted an edit at Everybody Draw Mohammed Day to declare it an annual event. I've was having a conversation with a new WP:SPA about why it isn't inherently an annual event. The conversation has degraded into two editors flinging derogatory words at me. The degradation of the conversation has resulted in the two editors pushing to edit war which I won't have a part of. I'm leaving this message here for you and any other editors who have been involved with the subject being an annual event or not as an invitation to either join the conversation or simply edit the page as you see fit. Regardless of your opinion and how it compares to mine, I feel like the situation is degrading and more eyes on the situation will only help work things out. Hardly constructive?

Removing blacklisted sites is constructive, especially in the case of BLP's. A blacklisted site can't be used as a RS. Wikipedia requires information be sourced. By removing unreliable sources, it demonstrates a need for an actual RS. You said "Going actively after them to weed them out, especially when obviously a useful and innocuous one as in this case, seems a bit overzealous." I say that ignoring the RS policy and leaving them is lazy and not in keeping with policy. Niteshift36 (talk) 16:59, 27 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article Studentmållaget i Oslo has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable local chapter; unreferenced

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Arsenikk (talk) 22:37, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There's a problem with this type of articles on Wikipedia. Some such articles are politically sensitive in today's climate. That means that factions will want to present them in a biased fashion. Often those factions will fight those who have no vested interests but who simply want to present the facts so as to elucidate the topic of the articles and instill the best understanding of the subject matter possible in the reader. In such cases the former group usually wins, sometimes even driving the latter faction off of Wikipedia altogether through provocations and trumped up prosecutions leaving them banned from editing. __meco (talk) 07:35, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A Norwegian "university" — and a co-founder

There is a Norwegian foundation that is currently being passed off as a university in one of our articles. The foundation is Stiftelsen kvinneuniversitetet i Norden [3] — and the article is Nordic Women's University.

Since it has never immatriculated any students, I plan to remove it from category:educational institution.

In the ongoing edit war, the following section keeps getting removed, [4]:

Finances

I have found a reference to 500 000 Norwegian kroner received in 2010. See the cited reference at this version, [5].

(This funding appeared in the news on the 2012-03-09 as a skeleton in the closet. The later 2 million kroner at least had a formal application to support the payment.) --Hamburgerstand (talk) 15:38, 12 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid the way this issue has been presented to me I don't currently see any angle for me to get into it. __meco (talk)
And I'm afraid that the article sucks bigtime, but it is not a problem for me if our article portrays the foundation/"university" as Harvard/Stanford of the Nordic countries. However, when Aftenposten writes that grants from the government constitute about 500 000 U.S. dollars, over 3 years, then that is notable. In addition, I am only aware of about 20 000 U.S dollars from one of Norway's municipalities. The Aftenposten reference puts the article's propaganda into a down-to-earth perspective; a foundation/"university" with income that compares to a sausage stand! --Chain of koools (talk) 22:45, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have added information about the entry fee to the foundation's conference in May 2011, http://www.hinesna.no/node/4575. (The conference was open to anyone interested, and the entry fees were Norwegian kroner 250 and 600 depending on the number of meals purchased. In addition entry fees and travel expenses could be refunded, if applications were filed.) --Gerrymanders (talk) 00:10, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A Norwegian foundation, or Nordic?

At this version, [6] I have added a reference about the foundation being Norwegian. Therefore it is a Scandinavian, Nordic, European and possibly a global foundation. --Gerrymanders (talk) 00:26, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Obligatory registration in Norway

The foundation is registered with the Entity Registry (Norway) with details published at http://w2.brreg.no/enhet/sok/detalj.jsp?orgnr=996815323, where it is registered with a business address in Oslo, and without a website or e-mail address. The registry's website does not mention the foundation being an educational institution.

Registering with the registry is not voluntary, for foundations in Norway. --Gerrymanders (talk) 00:53, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Name of the "university"

(From an archived discussion:)

  • "The name of article is wrongfully translated.

(If one translates "Nordic Women's University" to Norwegian, then you have Nordiske kvinners universitet.

Another problem is that the organization's registered name starts with the word stiftelsen — which in English is "foundation"."

  • "Renaming of the article.

There are no independent and notable references to a name in English. So the article ought to be renamed to the referenced name that it is registered with at Entity Registry (Norway)". --Gerrymanders (talk) 23:51, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Kvinneuniversitetet i Nord is mentioned on a Government web page (but not Stiftelsen kvinneuniversitetet i Norden) — Another webpage indicates that the foundation is not a college/university

(From an archived discussion:) The webpage linked here [7] explains the Government views (never been challenged in court) regarding points about colleges/universities in Norway. But Stiftelsen kvinneuniversitetet i Norden has never been a college — according to this link [8] from Entity Registry (Norway), where its purposes are defined as

  • Næringskode(r): 94.992 Fond/legater som støtter veldedige og allmennyttige formål
  • Sektorkode: 770 Private konsumentorienterte organisasjoner uten profittformål (ideelle organisasjoner)

No mention of educational purposes, research purposes or even status as a college! --Gerrymanders (talk) 23:51, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The foundation's name in English has no notable hits on google (except Wikipedia's article about the "university")

(From an archived discussion:)

I have googled the name of the "university" and the result was one hit [9]. (One wikipedian is trying to use a non-notable (?) website as a reference, ignoring that it is seemingly not an independent source. And probably not notable. In addition the website is not registered as being the foundation's website according to this linked webpage [10] at Entity Registry (Norway).) --Gerrymanders (talk) 23:51, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Deportation; references about the tent camp for asylum seekers

One notable Deportations from Norway is mentioned In Aftenposten (December 24 this year, page 38) Ole Paus is quoted saying "And I think about those who are left behind afterJuly 22. In one way or another, they will soon have to privatize their grief. ... He also wishes that we would have continued to build on the feeling of fellowship ( fellesfølelsen) from the summer of 2011. "The only thing missing in the collective hug, are the 100 000 who were the intended target for the attack. The muslims in Norway. Therefore we can, contrary to the United Nations unambiguous recommandation, deport one of the Palestinians that live in a tent camp outside James' Church. Right before Christmas. Especially now that our wealth is so awesome, we should have our hearts when we act. Or else we will belittle ourselves as humans."

Might the above be relevant tomore articles than one?

Notable encampment

Are there links or other references that show notability of Encampment of ayslum seekers at James' Church? (These Palestinian asylum seekers might be a notable part of an Asylum seekers to Norway article.)

I have seen stuff in print in 2011, including that police had set a deadline for the Palestinians to vacate the camp. That deadline has passed.

The authorities in Oslo later made a statement, but I have no quote.

Doc Childre

As per WP:NN

"The common theme in the notability guidelines is that there must be verifiable, objective evidence that the subject has received significant attention from independent sources to support a claim of notability. The absence of citations in an article (as distinct from the non-existence of sources) does not indicate that the subject is not notable. No subject is automatically or inherently notable merely because it exists: The evidence must show the topic has gained significant independent coverage or recognition, and that this was not a mere short-term interest, nor a result of promotional activity or indiscriminate publicity, nor is the topic unsuitable for any other reason. Sources of evidence include recognized peer reviewed publications, credible and authoritative books, reputable media sources, and other reliable sources generally."

Request for Comment/Uncivil

Hello Meco. On 3 June 2010 you left a message on a Talk page asking a User to behave in a more civil manner. See your diff.

Unfortunately, that User has not taken adequate notice of your advice, and has continued to taunt others, including newbies, with uncivil comments. For example, see this recent diff.

In recent times there have been more messages on this User's Talk page, and a couple of approaches to Wikiquette Assistance, and finally Wikipedia:Requests for comment/DocKino. In this RfC, you are mentioned by name, and your message from 3 June 2010 is among those cited as evidence of other Users having tried unsuccessfully to influence this User's behaviour. If you agree, you are entitled to endorse this RfC as a User who has tried to solve the problem. Regards. Dolphin (t) 01:46, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I see. I'm not sure how to assess that. I'm not too inclined to enter into the that morass again (i.e. Talk: Elvis Presley), so it's hard to tell if the comment which you had added was necessary. I do feel for you though, be assured. It's a pesky pack entrenching themselves in there. __meco (talk) 20:29, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Categories

Why are you removing the established in Norway by year categories? These categories are related to the geographic location of the introduction, while the locomotives by year categories are related to them being locomotives. These are not mutually exclusive categories; quite the contrary, they are mutually inclusive. Nearly everything contained within the Norway by year categories will naturally fall into another category. A company established in Norway will also fall into both the companies by year and Norway by year, and so on for most topics. Arsenikk (talk) 20:53, 17 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Different entities are introduced compared to those that are established. Products and ideas for instance are introduced, whereas institutions, groups and populated areas are established. I am unaware of any instances where something can be both established (or, if you will, the synonym founded) and introduced with this being semantically and idiomatically correct. The problem in regards to the changes I had to make is that we so far do not have a Category:Introductions by country hierarchy. Being the creator of the Category:Establishments by country hierarchy I can see this as something we should have, but for now we simply don't have it, and I don't think coaxing these items into an inappropriate hierarchy is something we should go for while we wait for that other hierarchy to emerge. __meco (talk) 23:29, 17 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

René Descartes-Angelic Revelation Story Transcript

Meco, something you may be interested in. I have updated the talk page on the 'angelic visitation' episode on the René Descartes page since you have contributed to it. Here is an exact transcript of the relevant portion of the 1991 lecture, "Unfolding the Stone". Hope you enjoy it.

McKenna:
I think somewhere in the body of my talk I got a dig in at Cartesian logic or Cartesian rationalism. As you know modern scientific rationalism was founded by René Descartes, French philosopher of the 17th century, but what the historians of science have been at great pains to keep from view is the following story, which is attested to in Descartes' own journal.

When he was a young man of about 22 years old he decided to go soldiering and wenching around Europe, which was something young men of that era did, and he joined a Hapsburg army which was on a mission to lay siege to the city of Prague in Bohemia to suppress what was essentially an alchemical revival, I won't go into the details, but a young prince of the Northern League [Frederick, the Elector Palatine] and his queen who was the daughter of James of England and was named Elizabeth after her grandmother had managed to gain control of the Empire, had been elected in fact, he was called Frederick the Elector Palatine. And this Hapsburg army was sent to destroy this Protestant alchemical reformation, and it did so, it laid siege to the city, killed this young man and his queen fled to the Hague. And, then they retreated across Germany, and on [straining to remember] I believe it was on the 17th of August that year which was 1619, the beginning year of the Thirty Years War, they made camp at Ulm in southern Germany - and, just as an aside, Ulm was later the birthplace of Albert Einstein - but on that night Descartes had a dream, and in the dream a radiant angel appeared to him and said, "The conquest of nature is to be accomplished through nature and measure," and in that moment René Descartes went from being a nobody to being the founder of modern science. Modern science was founded at the direction of an angel, and the angel showed how it was, and to this day modern science has made all of its strides through the application of number - mathematical analysis and measure. That is the secret of the scientific conquest of nature, and it was a secret that was imparted to René Descartes by an angelic entity. So, I would like you leave this evening wondering, 'who do we work for?' [applause]

Apparently not. That is up to you and the rest of the people who read Wikipedia. Usually people who know what to do will do something when they come across something that isn't right, like you have done. The difference is that most will do it in a constructive manner. That seems to be a major challenge for you. Entering into revert wars and crying fowl without showing to the policies and using the appropriate tools for reacting is likely to make you a nuisance in the perception of other editors and the articles you complain about are likely not to be improved either. If you don't have enough time for doing a task, the task isn't going to get done. That's basically the bottom line. __meco (talk) 11:11, 9 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Why on Earth did you revert my edits (as Huuuuuuuuh) to the article? Could you please tell me what was wrong with them? I replaced the ref to the manifesto from a personal blog with refs to the washington post and internet archive. If you think we only need one, you just have to remove one. Other things I did was add titles to references with only an url and some copyediting. Huuuuuuuuh2 (talk) 11:09, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

PS. Perhaps you think I changed more than I did. I removed some blank lines which made it look lika much of the article was changed, but it was not. I just thought there was absolutely no reason at all to hav a blank line after half of the section titles, and not for the other half. So I just changed that together with some other changes. If you revert my perfectly fine edits (at least to me) which fixed lots of problems, you should at least tell us why! Huuuuuuuuh2 (talk) 11:16, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am posting here to ask for editors to look at Wikipedia:In_the_news/Recurring_items and to comment at the talk page to discuss/vote on an amendment to the ITN/R list. I am posting this message on a number of editor's talk pages to encourage debate.

In connection to an ongoing debate on which items can appear on the front page under "In The News", "Recurring Items" are nominated events which require very little debate in the nomination process.

I propose the following amendment to the current ITN/R list. In addition I will put this on the talk page of as many editors as I can find who are contributors to ITN/C

At Wikipedia:In_the_news/Recurring_items, I propose the following amendment to section 3:

  • At line 5, delete "and", and add after "territories" the words "and the world's twenty smallest nations".

Section 3, Line 5 would then read:

  • Disputed states, dependent territories and the world's twenty smallest nations should be discussed at WP:ITN/C and judged on their own merits.

I look forward to the debate doktorb wordsdeeds 07:22, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

English varieties

Thank you for your message. As a linguist by profession, I am aware of the MoS policy on this and there is method to the edits. I make such changes for consistency reasons. Articles related to Anders Breivik, and indeed articles of overwhelming European interest, are written in British English. North American articles, on the other hand, should be written in American/Canadian English. Welshleprechaun 20:18, 19 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your note on my talk page

Thanks for the welcome! From what I understand, the lead is not sourced usually. It is a summary of the information of the article. The edit was to add a summary of sourced information that was in the body of the article, in fact, it's sourced in the next line of the article. To add a source to a lead is maybe necessary for controversial statements, but the fact that we aren't plants and do not photosynthesize energy shouldn't be considered controversial. Ultra Venia (talk) 21:10, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I may have been in error when I removed that information. Your argument here seems correct. __meco (talk) 08:11, 30 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hylland-Eriksen

I think by WP:BRD you ought to revert your last insertion of the contested material to the article (which you have now inserted 3 times) and then we'll take it to the talk page and request outside opinions. ·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 15:24, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm guessing that you are editing this article from the perspective of anthropology and thus within a field of expertise, or at least special interest, of yourself. Eriksen's involvement in the biggest terror trial in Norwegian history, on a number of levels, is much bigger than you seem to realize. Sure, this can be discussed at length on the article's talk page. I don't see, though, the need for keeping any of the text, well-presented as it is, added by myself, out of the article while that happens. __meco (talk) 15:34, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I will refrain from speculating about your perspective, but I will request you to refrain from edit warring and start discussing. Hylland Eriksen is not part of the trial - the coverage should be at the Breivik article.·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 15:36, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Meco, in case you haven't noticed I've reverted your addition to Ivory Wave. Bath salts

Hi Meco, it seems that a discussion is needed on whether to use news articles as sources for the effects of bath salts, so have initiated one at RSN. Regarding your last comment at the AFD, WP:V is not about blindly following what sources say - everything included needs to be verifiable, but not every verifiable should be included. We should use common sense when deciding whether to include a source or not and err on the side of caution if we think that the information could be incorrect. Article about a weapons manufacturerer headquartered in Kongsberg

I am trying to improve an article about Kongsberg Gruppen. If you see something in this [18] diff, that is marked yellow and is not relevant, than please let me know.

I find that the "noisy subs" mention in the current version, is of less value than earlier version in the diff—and it is not encyclopedic.

The other stuff that probably needs to be re-inserted, I will follow up later. --Vistamesa (talk) 12:10, 2 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have re-introduced a timeline (from an earlier version). Kongsberg Gruppen ASA is the current name of the company—it is now cited. --Vistamesa (talk) 12:45, 2 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Agree on the subs issue. I see several problems.
  1. tone is unencyclopedic ("subs") & POV ("scandal"?)
  2. introduced errors (re CNC machines)
  3. narrowing of focus to the U.S. alone
  4. eliminating the reason the change was significant (eliminating or reducing cavitation)
  5. eliminating mention of passive sonar detection (since this wouldn't be an issue for active sonar...)

I find the previous a bit strained, but better (& its problems are fixable without buggering up so much). TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 14:50, 2 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Disruptive edits

The article has been disruptively edited [19].

I am not too tempted about opening the article's talk page, and this link [20] might hint why. But as a current "sockpuppet investigatee", I will gladly answer any questions on the article's talk page. --Vistamesa (talk) 14:56, 5 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm on top of it. Let's see how the sockpuppet investigation turns out. __meco (talk) 17:52, 5 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

July 2012

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Archetypal cosmology. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Please be particularly aware, Wikipedia's policy on edit warring states:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made; that is to say, editors are not automatically "entitled" to three reverts.
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. IRWolfie- (talk) 19:24, 2 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Since this concerns links I placed, let me say I don't know whether the policy is for the links to remain during the process or not. But one thing I find highly amusing, is the way that one editor involved will accuse another editor involved of edit-warring, as if it's ever a one way thing. When the other party involved in the disagreement is the one placing the official-looking warning on the other party's talkpage, it's really quite comedic. If the intention is to give a personal warning of taking the matter more seriously, why not act like a human being and just say so? -- Zac Δ talk! 21:08, 2 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Actually it is to do with the re-inserting of references which have no explicit link to the topic. Without even reading them apparently. IRWolfie- (talk) 09:10, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

About Trollfest

Hey, I was just wondering why you had put a Norwegian band named Trollfest as a candidate for deletion. I checked the Notability page of Wikipedia, and saw that Trollfest does qualify for a proper band. I see no reason to delete the page, it would make much more sense if it would be modified instead of deleting it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 8tigrams (talkcontribs) 14:03, 7 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it was speedily deleted the last time it was nominated for deletion. It looks to me that the present references aren't sufficient to satisfy our notability requirements. If you or others can supply better references it probably won't be deleted. __meco (talk) 14:07, 7 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the belated welcome

Hi,

And the chocolate chip cookies. Love 'em.

A question about Wiki's rules and editing. If I read a page that I think contains false statements, is biased and misleading and a huge disservice to Wiki users around the world what is the best way to change it?

Yes I have read the advice about providing references. There are a few major problems with Wiki's philosophy that all you need is a reference and voila, presto, you have an accurate article or something approaching the Truth. First of all, lots of biased, false and misleading statements are published. They are still biased, false and misleading statements. Second, many key questions are questions of philosophy. In other words a reference is not needed and not helpful; it adds nothing to the discussion. The key question is how a person views a given subject. The answer is not found in a reference but in common sense. That's the third problem, that common sense is not evenly distributed. That cannot be helped. But it does subtract a lot from the quality of Wikipedia.

The question next is about "undo". If I go in and make an edit can another person just go in and "undo" it without giving any sort of logical reason? How is that not considered an edit war? What is an edit war? Where is the line between difference of opinion and an edit war? I am sure you can refer me to a wiki page on edit war, and please save yourself the time; I can find it myself. I am asking for your opinion please.

Also, the instruction in red letters at the top of your page here conflicts directly with what you wrote on my user talk page:

(in red at top)

Do not post a response here to a message on your talk page. Keep the discussion in one place. Similarly, if you make an inquiry here, this page is where I will respond.

cf

If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a message on my talk page, consult Wikipedia:Questions, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and ask your question there.

Peace,

Beasley Reece (talk) 18:22, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You'll get to understand how these things fit together, and clear up some misunderstandings, as you get into the editing process and get a little mileage both in making edits to articles and participating in talk page discussions, on article talk pages, user talk pages, and on other types of discussion pages around Wikipedia.
You should of course use your common sense when deciding what to try and present in an article, but your edits shouldn't be based on your common sense only, at least not if others might see the issue differently. In such situations you should locate someone who presents your position from a reliable source and cite that reference.
And obviously, even though something is published in a reliable source, e.g. a mainstream newspaper, it might be simply wrong. But you may know that. Others who are less knowledgeable about the issue in question may not see that, and they may believe what the source says. They may even revert you if you try and remove the text and the source from the article based on your superior knowledge. The right way to deal with this situation is to present a reliable reference which contradicts the first source. If your new source is an obvious authority on the subject, the facts of the matter may even become so obvious that the other user won't object even to you removing the first source. But sometimes both conflicting views must remain in the article, even if you personally know one of them to be wrong. That's part of how a consensus-based project, such as Wikipedia works.
With respect to undoing another user's edit, sure that's easy to do. But unless you give some cogent reason for this in the edit summary, chances are high others will revert back to the original text. If you attempt to use this strategy to win your cases you will very soon be slapped with an edit-warring warning, and if you still keep reverting you will be blocked from editing for a period. The competent contributor argues rationally for the changes they want to make, and if they receive stubborn resistance from unreasonable and entrenched users who are adamant that the truth not come out, then they make use of Wikipedia's diverse toolbox of conflict resolution instruments.
I'm not quite sure about your last question, but perhaps we can leave it at this for now? __meco (talk) 18:57, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Meco

Dear Meco,
First, thank you for your warm welcomes!
Secondly, I am a kind of new user here and I do not know whom to turn to when I want to report something. A user named SudoGhost kept deleting comments' of an other user in the following deletion page here then when I restored the deleted parts, he deleted that again. Not only that, I discovered that he deleted my comments (in which I told him not to delete other's comments) from his talk page. The history of deleted comments you will find on the deletion page's history here and on SudoGhost's talk page. Also, there is some claim about a Ku Klux Klan association of SudoGhost here which I do not really understand and did not have time to deal with it.
Please tell me that the actions of this user are not normal and help me what I can do if my comments or edits are constantly deleted.
I am sorry if I bothered you or contacted you through the wrong channel, but that is all I could do to do what I felt necessary.
Thank you FonsScientiae (talk) 23:05, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The page in question is Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Brown people (2nd nomination), not the page you have linked to.
  • In this edit a user called TekItRemark deletes one of SudoGhost's posts with the edit summary "needless insults removed". Now, there is some room on our guidelines for removing offensive posts, but to me the comment in question does not fall within that. So I believe SudoGhost is in their right when reverting TekItRemark.
Leaving that episode alone, I will discuss the following:

625273 this edit] SudoGhost deletes a comment by TekItRemark with the edit summary "Asanine sockpuppet". Then you revert with the edit summary "Nobody should remove other users' comments". This is reverted back by SudoGhost with the same edit summary as initially.

  • In this edit SudoGhost appears to delete one comment by Uncle G with apparently no explanation at all.
  • Here SudoGhost removes your post from their user talk page.
My comments after having investigated all relevant revisions to the AfD discussion page and SudoGhost's user talk page are as follows:
  • Your post on SudoGhost's talk page demanding an explanation for their removing of another user's comment from the AfD page was made prior to the edit removing Uncle G's comment, so it must be related to the earlier removal of TekItRemark's comment. If SudoGhost's assertion that TekItRemark is a sockpuppet then reverting any and all of their edits, including in discussions, is allowed. However, this is not applicable in this case as that user has not been investigated for sockpuppetry. The removal of their comment is therefore in violation of talk page guidelines.
  • SudoGhost is however in their full right to remove comments from their own talk page. On this, but in no other places is this allowed. By their edit commentary ("Nah") the user also shows that they have read your post and gives you a response to your demand.
  • The removal of Uncle G's comment from the AfD is completely inappropriate, so that would mean SudoGhost has violated Wikipedia policies on refactoring other users' comments (also WP:TPO) on two separate occasions. You might want to make a second attempt to communicate with SudoGhost on their talk page, raising the issues that I have identified here. In particular, the second removal, related to Uncle G, might have been inadvertent as the edit summary indicates SudoGhost's focus was elsewhere.
  • If you are unable to obtain a satisfactory acknowledgment and explanation from SudoGhost, I recommend you report this matter at WP:ANI (Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents).
__meco (talk) 07:48, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for your profound analysis of the situation, I really appreciate it. I decided that I will not make a complaint against SudoGhost now, as the matter cooled down, SudoGhost has stopped deleting or commenting on that page, and it will not affect the final results of the consensus. In case he restarted deleting comments inappropriately I will report the matter to Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents as you suggested.
So can I delete comments from my talk page? I thought "nah" means no. FonsScientiae (talk) 15:20, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You can delete comments from your own talk page for whatever reason. The other user's "nah" (which of course means "no") was not in relation to that. __meco (talk) 15:40, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You said that "By their edit commentary ("Nah") the user also shows that they have read your post and gives you a response to your demand." By saying no while he deleted my comment he meant that he acknowledged what I wrote? This is the only thing that was unclear to me from your comment. I wrote that the user by that acknowledged having read your post. That is implicit since the user gives an answer to you demand. __meco (talk) 06:51, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your explanation!
On another topic.. there is an article about American stereotypes and some of the sources which I added are from blogs, forums, and Youtube videos. As one editor noted these are considered unreliable sources. My counter-reasoning was that the stereotypes are not true and that they are beliefs of people and that these sources show these beliefs of the society (see Talk:Stereotypes of Americans). What do you think of that? If you judge those sources unreliable, I will remove them and will try to find more reliable sources. FonsScientiae (talk) 13:37, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The other user is correct. Blogs and forums can (and will) generally be cursorily culled from articles. Your rationale is understandable, particularly considering the characteristics of the subject. The only way such "grassroots" voices could be brought into the article would be to cite a reliable source discussing them. As for YouTube and similar content providers the consideration is a different one. Here the issue is that anything that would seem reliable usually are copyright violations. If you cite a video published from the channel of the copyright owner then you can readily use that as a reference, again provided it is reliable. __meco (talk) 14:18, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Dark skin, light skin

Dear Meco,
When I fist came to Wikipedia my main purpose was to edit articles related to skin color. First, I started editing the Black people article as there was no separate article for dark skin. After an edit war and discussion I was told that that article was about "black race" which is independent of skin color and my edits based on the belief of black as a reference for skin colour, are wrong. I never thought about 'black' or 'white' as terms for "race", as concepts of race in the part of Europe where I live are seldom used and almost never in confusion with skin color.
Anyway, I deleted all my previous edits and started to create pages for "dark skin"/"black (skin color)", and "light skin"/"white (skin color)" (if you can see deleted pages please take a look at them). I found it strange that there was article for olive skin but no articles for black and white (by which most people colloquially refer to dark and light skin). Reliable sources support that the terms 'black' and 'white' are used for people who have dark-coloured skin and light-coloured skin and that they are encyclopedic topics. (Black: 1: "any human group having dark-coloured skin" , 2: "various population groups having dark pigmentation of the skin" , 3: "any of various dark-skinned peoples"; [4]: "having skin of a dark color"; White: 5: "having light-coloured skin", 6: "marked by slight pigmentation of the skin"7: "having little skin pigmentation")
The User:Soupforone, the main advocate of racial view has wrote to other users' talk page (e.g. User_talk:Maunus, User_talk:Carwil#white_people.2Fblack_people, User_talk:Anbu121); is that canvassing? The two pages I created were speedily deleted by a user (involved in the race-based article) calling it copyright infringement, as some parts of the articles were from other Wikipedia articles. I didn't know it was such a big problem as I've seen lot of articles on Wikipedia containing identical parts to each other; actually the "black people" article has contained an identical part (evolution of black skin section) copied from the human skin color article for months, before I recently removed it.
I will rewrite those deleted articles so they won't contain copyedits, creating them again. But if my edits again got deleted by people who think that there can't be any article describing skin color, and that 'black' and 'white' as adjectives has a solely purpose to describe human races, I'm seriously consider leaving Wikipedia for good. Wikipedia should rely on sources and not on what the majority of editors from a certain, over-represented region think.
Your views on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Best regards FonsScientiae (talk) 16:26, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia's content is freely licenced, so quoting even large portions of text verbatim from another Wikipedia article cannot be a copyright violation. Other than that I suggest that you avail yourself of some of Wikipedia's conflict resolution tools if you find yourself being overrun by unreasonable editors. And of course, deletions done on spurious grounds can be appealed at WP:DRV. I'm afraid I don't have those powers connected to my account that makes it possible to review deleted material. __meco (talk) 18:37, 13 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for your advice, Meco. Kind regards. FonsScientiae (talk) 10:56, 14 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that would seem the appropriate procedure. __meco (talk) 16:02, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures

Hello Meco. I need some advise on Wikipedia's policy regarding photos. In an entry I am editing about a person, there is no photo. His organization gave me a photo of which they own the copywrite. Is it possible to use a copywrited material in Wikipedia if the owner of the copywrite gives you permission to do so? Would be grateful for your input.
In fact, I'm not really sure how to upload images to Wikipedia. I know it's supposed to be elementary, but I could not figure it out. Is there a Wiki page that explains it? Thahks, Igal
— Preceding unsigned comment added by Igal01 (talkcontribs) 03:08, 19 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If it's a dead person we can sometimes use copyrighted images if it is likely that a free image would be hard to find. If the person is still living the image must be free, basically. That means the organization which currently owns the copyright must relinquish it to the extent that they allow anyone to reuse or modify the image. That's the kind of permission the copyright holder needs to give. Simply giving permission for the media to be used on Wikipedia is not sufficient. WP:IMAGE can tell you more about uploading images. __meco (talk) 09:24, 19 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am about to upload an image and am asked to provide a license statement from the owner. However, I cannot locate a link where the text of such license statement can be found, nor a link to where these statements should be forwarded. Would be grateful for your help on this.Igal01 (talk) 13:12, 23 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The image should be uploaded at Commons (commons.wikimedia.org). I think there are upload wizards there which give you a choice of different available licences. __meco (talk) 17:19, 23 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:Poster-Are-All-Men-Pedophiles.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:Poster-Are-All-Men-Pedophiles.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:15, 20 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I saw your request at WP:AIV. I'm not sure about the edit you're reporting -- I don't know much about porn star birthplaces; that may just be a good-faith edit even if it's wrong. I did go back and look at the previous set of edits for which that IP was blocked and none of them appeared vandalistic -- in fact, they appeared correct. For this reason, I'm declining to block this IP for now.

Thanks for keeping an eye on things! --A. B. (talkcontribs) 20:38, 21 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am quite certain that last edit was an instance of vandalism. I have kept an eye on that particular article for years and it is a frequent target of vandalism. Very little information about this subject exists, and if the information added by the IP user would be correct, that would mean the subject had recently been identified, which in itself would be a minor sensation. I can see that the user's previous block was unwarranted. Therefore I will simply place a stern vandalism warning template on their user page instead. __meco (talk) 20:45, 21 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like there was more to the story than I realized; see User talk:A. B.#Re 98.185.48.50 and the Ica Stones. --A. B. (talkcontribs) 01:20, 22 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My block of 98.185.48.50

You posted to User talk:98.185.48.50 saying this block was a wrong decision. Someone else notified me (and had the situation explained to them by another editor). This was clearly indefinitely blocked User:Rrrr5 socking. I can't comment on the latest vandalism however. Dougweller (talk) 05:17, 22 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Right. I didn't realize that. I figured the block was over the content dispute between you and the user. I understand the wrong template was used so the reason for the block didn't come through. __meco (talk) 07:10, 22 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I wouldn't have blocked over a content dispute there, and it was lazy of me to use the anon block template. Please though if you ever see a block of mine that you think is unwarranted, let me know, especially if you are reporting it elsewhere such as AIV. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dougweller (talkcontribs) 09:21, 22 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Since 2009, when you added information on the Valentinian Ogdoad to this article, the article has been split between the Ogdoad of Egyptian mythology and the Ogdoad of Gnostic belief. I wanted to thank you for your work reformatting the talk page associated with "Malmstrom AFB", specifically the claims regarding UFO interference with the nuclear missiles deployed there. I'm afraid I lost my temper more than once due to my frustration, and was unable to maintain a very professional or profitable assessment of Wikipedia's policies. After your hard work formatting -- and particularly your suggestion that the addition of "some formatting that will break it up visually, without compromising coherence or otherwise integrity" -- I was able to see how any considered contemplation of the issues might well discourage the very people I have been trying to convince. If nothing else, your attempt to relieve that discouragement shows considerable tolerance and sympathy. It also convinced me that a more appropriate response to the claims under examination would be to correct the errors instead of merely deleting them as I first proposed. This was accomplished to my satisfaction, so I no longer have any objections to content. Thank you for that.

Hi Meco

I closed the 12 August CfD for Category:Establishments by country and decade as "split per nominator", and listed it at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Working/Manual#Other.

Unfortunately, a split cannot be done by the bots, and needs to be performed manually. You were the nominator, so would you be able to do it? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 12:56, 16 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
