I did a bad thing

I did a "bad" thing and deleted your second and third comments from the Shehrbanot talk page (i.e. everything except the welcome box). I have never deleted comments from a user's talk page before, and I will not do anything if you revert my edit. I just believed that, given the extraordinary relevant facts of the situation, the general tone of your comments was not quite appropriate (but would be perfectly fine in any kind of a normal situation), and our work building an encyclopaedia would carry on more smoothly if those comments simply disappeared. Again, I will not revert a revert, nor blank any further comments, but I think after some reflection you too may find that leaving that talk page as is would be in the best interest of both that user (i.e. emotional state) and the project. CFD edit

Removal of that category is an admin action: as an administrator I am declining to block the user because their username is not a violation of the policy as I explained to you on my talk page. The only circumstances in which a non-admin should revert an admin action, such as this or a declined speedy deletion, for example, is in the case of a clear mistake. If you want to revert admins in other circumstances, please go to WP:RFA. If you still believe the username is a violation of the username policy, you may file at WP:RFC/N but, aside from being improper, re-adding the category will achieve nothing but the user lingering in the category until another admin decides to clean out the category, by which time any concern will more than likely be stale. A church in Miami that is financed/guaranteed by Norway?

In Miami there is a church under construction — "Sjømannskirken Kronprinsesse Mette-Marits kirke — Scandinavian Churrch & Center" (see today's Aftenposten on page 7, please).

• Is the Norwegian name appropriate for an article on this wikipedia?
• I wonder if any videos or movies will be shown there. Because she is known more as a video-person, rather than a book-person, and every sjømannskirke-has a library.

Everybody Draw Mohammed Day

Hey! I noticed that you have previously reverted an edit at Everybody Draw Mohammed Day to declare it an annual event. I've was having a conversation with a new WP:SPA about why it isn't inherently an annual event. The conversation has degraded into two editors flinging derogatory words at me. The degradation of the conversation has resulted in the two editors pushing to edit war which I won't have a part of. I'm leaving this message here for you and any other editors who have been involved with the subject being an annual event or not as an invitation to either join the conversation or simply edit the page as you see fit. Regardless of your opinion and how it compares to mine, I feel like the situation is degrading and more eyes on the situation will only help work things out. Hardly constructive?

Removing blacklisted sites is constructive, especially in the case of BLP's. A blacklisted site can't be used as a RS. Wikipedia requires information be sourced. By removing unreliable sources, it demonstrates a need for an actual RS. You said "Going actively after them to weed them out, especially when obviously a useful and innocuous one as in this case, seems a bit overzealous." There's a problem with this type of articles on Wikipedia. Some such articles are politically sensitive in today's climate. That means that factions will want to present them in a biased fashion. Often those factions will fight those who have no vested interests but who simply want to present the facts so as to elucidate the topic of the articles and instill the best understanding of the subject matter possible in the reader. In such cases the former group usually wins, sometimes even driving the latter faction off of Wikipedia altogether through provocations and trumped up prosecutions leaving them banned from editing. __meco (talk) 07:35, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

A Norwegian "university" — and a co-founder

There is a Norwegian foundation that is currently being passed off as a university in one of our articles. The foundation is Stiftelsen kvinneuniversitetet i Norden [3] — and the article is Nordic Women's University.

Since it has never immatriculated any students, I plan to remove it from category:educational institution.

I have found a reference to 500 000 Norwegian kroner received in 2010. See the cited reference at this version, [5].

And I'm afraid that the article sucks bigtime, but it is not a problem for me if our article portrays the foundation/"university" as Harvard/Stanford of the Nordic countries. However, when Aftenposten writes that grants from the government constitute about 500 000 U.S. dollars, over 3 years, then that is notable. In addition, I am only aware of about 20 000 U.S dollars from one of Norway's municipalities. The Aftenposten reference puts the article's propaganda into a down-to-earth perspective; a foundation/"university" with income that compares to a sausage stand! --Chain of koools (talk) 22:45, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

(The conference was open to anyone interested, and the entry fees were Norwegian kroner 250 and 600 depending on the number of meals purchased. Obligatory registration in Norway

The foundation is registered with the Entity Registry (Norway) with details published at http://w2.brreg.no/enhet/sok/detalj.jsp?orgnr=996815323, where it is registered with a business address in Oslo, and without a website or e-mail address. The registry's website does not mention the foundation being an educational institution.

Name of the "university"

Notable encampment

Are there links or other references that show notability of Encampment of ayslum seekers at James' Church? (These Palestinian asylum seekers might be a notable part of an Asylum seekers to Norway article.)

I have seen stuff in print in 2011, including that police had set a deadline for the Palestinians to vacate the camp. That deadline has passed.

The authorities in Oslo later made a statement, but I have no quote.

Categories

Why are you removing the established in Norway by year categories? These categories are related to the geographic location of the introduction, while the locomotives by year categories are related to them being locomotives. These are not mutually exclusive categories; quite the contrary, they are mutually inclusive. Nearly everything contained within the Norway by year categories will naturally fall into another category. A company established in Norway will also fall into both the companies by year and Norway by year, and so on for most topics. Arsenikk ^(talk) 20:53, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

Different entities are introduced compared to those that are established. Products and ideas for instance are introduced, whereas institutions, groups and populated areas are established. I am unaware of any instances where something can be both established (or, if you will, the synonym founded) and introduced with this being semantically and idiomatically correct. The problem in regards to the changes I had to make is that we so far do not have a Category:Introductions by country hierarchy. Being the creator of the Category:Establishments by country hierarchy I can see this as something we should have, but for now we simply don't have it, and I don't think coaxing these items into an inappropriate hierarchy is something we should go for while we wait for that other hierarchy to emerge. __meco (talk) 23:29, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

Responding to your query on my talk page, I am principally responsible for the individual Carrier Strike Group articles since I created them initially.

• Carrier Strike Group One - This group was created on 1 October 2009, so there is no need for sub-article yet.
• Carrier Strike Group Two - This article was kept together by mutual agreement between Buckshot06 and me.
• Carrier Strike Group Three - This article has coverage of the strike group's 2010-2012 operations, as well as a sub-article for its 2004-2009 operations.
• Carrier Strike Group Seven - Redesignated Commander Strike Force Training Atlantic.
• Carrier Strike Group Seven - This carrier strike group has been deactivated.
• Carrier Strike Group Nine - Same as Carrier Strike Group Three.
• Carrier Strike Group Ten - Same as Carrier Strike Group Three. Please note that the strike group's flagship, the aurcraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75), is undergoing a major overhaul.
• Carrier Strike Group Eleven - Same as above. Please note that the strike group's flagship, the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN-68), is completing its overhaul.
• Carrier Strike Group Fourteen - This strike group does not have an aircraft carrier or carrier air wing, so its operational history depends on its assigned guided-missile cruisers.
• Carrier Strike Group Fifteen - This carrier strike group has been deactivated.

I do plan to created article for Carrier Strike Group Five, Carrier Strike Group Eight, and Carrier Strike Group Twelve, but as you can image, this requires a lot of time, so I have to balance this objective with other personal goals. When he was a young man of about 22 years old he decided to go soldiering and wenching around Europe, which was something young men of that era did, and he joined a Hapsburg army which was on a mission to lay siege to the city of Prague in Bohemia to suppress what was essentially an alchemical revival, I won't go into the details, but a young prince of the Northern League [Frederick, the Elector Palatine] and his queen who was the daughter of James of England and was named Elizabeth after her grandmother had managed to gain control of the Empire, had been elected in fact, he was called Frederick the Elector Palatine. And this Hapsburg army was sent to destroy this Protestant alchemical reformation, and it did so, it laid siege to the city, killed this young man and his queen fled to the Hague. And, then they retreated across Germany, and on [straining to remember] I believe it was on the 17th of August that year which was 1619, the beginning year of the Thirty Years War, they made camp at Ulm in southern Germany - and, just as an aside, Ulm was later the birthplace of Albert Einstein - but on that night Descartes had a dream, and in the dream a radiant angel appeared to him and said, "The conquest of nature is to be accomplished through nature and measure," and in that moment René Descartes went from being a nobody to being the founder of modern science. Modern science was founded at the direction of an angel, and the angel showed how it was, and to this day modern science has made all of its strides through the application of number - mathematical analysis and measure. That is the secret of the scientific conquest of nature, and it was a secret that was imparted to René Descartes by an angelic entity. So, I would like you leave this evening wondering, 'who do we work for?' [applause]

Apparently not. That is up to you and the rest of the people who read Wikipedia. Usually people who know what to do will do something when they come across something that isn't right, like you have done. The difference is that most will do it in a constructive manner. That seems to be a major challenge for you. Entering into revert wars and crying fowl without showing to the policies and using the appropriate tools for reacting is likely to make you a nuisance in the perception of other editors and the articles you complain about are likely not to be improved either. 2011 Norway attacks

Why on Earth did you revert my edits (as Huuuuuuuuh) to the article? Could you please tell me what was wrong with them? I replaced the ref to the manifesto from a personal blog with refs to the washington post and internet archive. If you think we only need one, you just have to remove one. PS. Perhaps you think I changed more than I did. I removed some blank lines which made it look lika much of the article was changed, but it was not. I reverted your edits because it was completely opaque as to what you had actually done. I'll give you a tip about removing line breaks. Do that in separate edits. I try and always do that. Thank you for your message. As a linguist by profession, I am aware of the MoS policy on this and there is method to the edits. I make such changes for consistency reasons. Articles related to Anders Breivik, and indeed articles of overwhelming European interest, are written in British English. Thanks for the welcome! From what I understand, the lead is not sourced usually. It is a summary of the information of the article. The edit was to add a summary of sourced information that was in the body of the article, in fact, it's sourced in the next line of the article. To add a source to a lead is maybe necessary for controversial statements, but the fact that we aren't plants and do not photosynthesize energy shouldn't be considered controversial. Regarding your last comment at the AFD, WP:V is not about blindly following what sources say - everything included needs to be verifiable, but not every verifiable should be included. We should use common sense when deciding whether to include a source or not and err on the side of caution if we think that the information could be incorrect. Agree on the subs issue. I see several problems.

1. tone is unencyclopedic ("subs") & POV ("scandal"?)
2. introduced errors (re CNC machines)
3. narrowing of focus to the U.S. alone
4. eliminating the reason the change was significant (eliminating or reducing cavitation)
5. eliminating mention of passive sonar detection (since this wouldn't be an issue for active sonar...)

Since this concerns links I placed, let me say I don't know whether the policy is for the links to remain during the process or not. But one thing I find highly amusing, is the way that one editor involved will accuse another editor involved of edit-warring, as if it's ever a one way thing. Hey, I was just wondering why you had put a Norwegian band named Trollfest as a candidate for deletion. I checked the Notability page of Wikipedia, and saw that Trollfest does qualify for a proper band. A question about Wiki's rules and editing. If I read a page that I think contains false statements, is biased and misleading and a huge disservice to Wiki users around the world what is the best way to change it?

Yes I have read the advice about providing references. There are a few major problems with Wiki's philosophy that all you need is a reference and voila, presto, you have an accurate article or something approaching the Truth. First of all, lots of biased, false and misleading statements are published. They are still biased, false and misleading statements. Second, many key questions are questions of philosophy. In other words a reference is not needed and not helpful; it adds nothing to the discussion. The key question is how a person views a given subject. The answer is not found in a reference but in common sense. That's the third problem, that common sense is not evenly distributed. That cannot be helped. But it does subtract a lot from the quality of Wikipedia.

The question next is about "undo". If I go in and make an edit can another person just go in and "undo" it without giving any sort of logical reason? How is that not considered an edit war? What is an edit war? Where is the line between difference of opinion and an edit war? I am sure you can refer me to a wiki page on edit war, and please save yourself the time; I can find it myself. I am asking for your opinion please.

You'll get to understand how these things fit together, and clear up some misunderstandings, as you get into the editing process and get a little mileage both in making edits to articles and participating in talk page discussions, on article talk pages, user talk pages, and on other types of discussion pages around Wikipedia.

You should of course use your common sense when deciding what to try and present in an article, but your edits shouldn't be based on your common sense only, at least not if others might see the issue differently. In such situations you should locate someone who presents your position from a reliable source and cite that reference.

And obviously, even though something is published in a reliable source, e.g. a mainstream newspaper, it might be simply wrong. But you may know that. Others who are less knowledgeable about the issue in question may not see that, and they may believe what the source says. They may even revert you if you try and remove the text and the source from the article based on your superior knowledge. The right way to deal with this situation is to present a reliable reference which contradicts the first source. If your new source is an obvious authority on the subject, the facts of the matter may even become so obvious that the other user won't object even to you removing the first source. But sometimes both conflicting views must remain in the article, even if you personally know one of them to be wrong. That's part of how a consensus-based project, such as Wikipedia works.

With respect to undoing another user's edit, sure that's easy to do. But unless you give some cogent reason for this in the edit summary, chances are high others will revert back to the original text. If you attempt to use this strategy to win your cases you will very soon be slapped with an edit-warring warning, and if you still keep reverting you will be blocked from editing for a period. The competent contributor argues rationally for the changes they want to make, and if they receive stubborn resistance from unreasonable and entrenched users who are adamant that the truth not come out, then they make use of Wikipedia's diverse toolbox of conflict resolution instruments.

Secondly, I am a kind of new user here and I do not know whom to turn to when I want to report something. A user named SudoGhost kept deleting comments' of an other user in the following deletion page here then when I restored the deleted parts, he deleted that again. Not only that, I discovered that he deleted my comments (in which I told him not to delete other's comments) from his talk page. The history of deleted comments you will find on the deletion page's history here and on SudoGhost's talk page. Also, there is some claim about a Ku Klux Klan association of SudoGhost here which I do not really understand and did not have time to deal with it.
Please tell me that the actions of this user are not normal and help me what I can do if my comments or edits are constantly deleted.
I am sorry if I bothered you or contacted you through the wrong channel, but that is all I could do to do what I felt necessary.

The page in question is Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Brown people (2nd nomination), not the page you have linked to.

• In this edit a user called TekItRemark deletes one of SudoGhost's posts with the edit summary "needless insults removed". Now, there is some room on our guidelines for removing offensive posts, but to me the comment in question does not fall within that. So I believe SudoGhost is in their right when reverting TekItRemark.

Leaving that episode alone, I will discuss the following:

• In [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Brown_people_%282nd_nomination%29&diff=501630001&oldid=501

625273 this edit] SudoGhost deletes a comment by TekItRemark with the edit summary "Asanine sockpuppet". Then you revert with the edit summary "Nobody should remove other users' comments". This is reverted back by SudoGhost with the same edit summary as initially.

• In this edit SudoGhost appears to delete one comment by Uncle G with apparently no explanation at all.
• Here SudoGhost removes your post from their user talk page.

My comments after having investigated all relevant revisions to the AfD discussion page and SudoGhost's user talk page are as follows:

• Your post on SudoGhost's talk page demanding an explanation for their removing of another user's comment from the AfD page was made prior to the edit removing Uncle G's comment, so it must be related to the earlier removal of TekItRemark's comment. If SudoGhost's assertion that TekItRemark is a sockpuppet then reverting any and all of their edits, including in discussions, is allowed. However, this is not applicable in this case as that user has not been investigated for sockpuppetry. The removal of their comment is therefore in violation of talk page guidelines.
• SudoGhost is however in their full right to remove comments from their own talk page. On this, but in no other places is this allowed. By their edit commentary ("Nah") the user also shows that they have read your post and gives you a response to your demand.
• The removal of Uncle G's comment from the AfD is completely inappropriate, so that would mean SudoGhost has violated Wikipedia policies on refactoring other users' comments (also WP:TPO) on two separate occasions. You might want to make a second attempt to communicate with SudoGhost on their talk page, raising the issues that I have identified here. In particular, the second removal, related to Uncle G, might have been inadvertent as the edit summary indicates SudoGhost's focus was elsewhere.
• If you are unable to obtain a satisfactory acknowledgment and explanation from SudoGhost, I recommend you report this matter at WP:ANI (Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents).

On another topic.. there is an article about American stereotypes and some of the sources which I added are from blogs, forums, and Youtube videos. As one editor noted these are considered unreliable sources. My counter-reasoning was that the stereotypes are not true and that they are beliefs of people and that these sources show these beliefs of the society (see Talk:Stereotypes of Americans). The other user is correct. Blogs and forums can (and will) generally be cursorily culled from articles. Your rationale is understandable, particularly considering the characteristics of the subject. The only way such "grassroots" voices could be brought into the article would be to cite a reliable source discussing them. As for YouTube and similar content providers the consideration is a different one. Here the issue is that anything that would seem reliable usually are copyright violations. If you cite a video published from the channel of the copyright owner then you can readily use that as a reference, again provided it is reliable. __meco (talk) 14:18, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

Dark skin, light skin

Dear Meco,
When I fist came to Wikipedia my main purpose was to edit articles related to skin color. First, I started editing the Black people article as there was no separate article for dark skin. After an edit war and discussion I was told that that article was about "black race" which is independent of skin color and my edits based on the belief of black as a reference for skin colour, are wrong. I never thought about 'black' or 'white' as terms for "race", as concepts of race in the part of Europe where I live are seldom used and almost never in confusion with skin color.
Anyway, I deleted all my previous edits and started to create pages for "dark skin"/"black (skin color)", and "light skin"/"white (skin color)" (if you can see deleted pages please take a look at them). I found it strange that there was article for olive skin but no articles for black and white (by which most people colloquially refer to dark and light skin). Reliable sources support that the terms 'black' and 'white' are used for people who have dark-coloured skin and light-coloured skin and that they are encyclopedic topics. (Black: 1: "any human group having dark-coloured skin" , 2: "various population groups having dark pigmentation of the skin" , 3: "any of various dark-skinned peoples"; [4]: "having skin of a dark color"; White: 5: "having light-coloured skin", 6: "marked by slight pigmentation of the skin"7: "having little skin pigmentation")
The User:Soupforone, the main advocate of racial view has wrote to other users' talk page (e.g. User_talk:Maunus, User_talk:Carwil#white_people.2Fblack_people, User_talk:Anbu121); is that canvassing? The two pages I created were speedily deleted by a user (involved in the race-based article) calling it copyright infringement, as some parts of the articles were from other Wikipedia articles. I didn't know it was such a big problem as I've seen lot of articles on Wikipedia containing identical parts to each other; actually the "black people" article has contained an identical part (evolution of black skin section) copied from the human skin color article for months, before I recently removed it.
I will rewrite those deleted articles so they won't contain copyedits, creating them again. But if my edits again got deleted by people who think that there can't be any article describing skin color, and that 'black' and 'white' as adjectives has a solely purpose to describe human races, I'm seriously consider leaving Wikipedia for good. Wikipedia should rely on sources and not on what the majority of editors from a certain, over-represented region think.

Wikipedia's content is freely licenced, so quoting even large portions of text verbatim from another Wikipedia article cannot be a copyright violation. Other than that I suggest that you avail yourself of some of Wikipedia's conflict resolution tools if you find yourself being overrun by unreasonable editors. And of course, deletions done on spurious grounds can be appealed at WP:DRV. Pictures

Hello Meco. I need some advise on Wikipedia's policy regarding photos. In an entry I am editing about a person, there is no photo. His organization gave me a photo of which they own the copywrite. Is it possible to use a copywrited material in Wikipedia if the owner of the copywrite gives you permission to do so? Would be grateful for your input.
In fact, I'm not really sure how to upload images to Wikipedia. I know it's supposed to be elementary, but I could not figure it out. Is there a Wiki page that explains it? Thahks, Igal

If it's a dead person we can sometimes use copyrighted images if it is likely that a free image would be hard to find. If the person is still living the image must be free, basically. That means the organization which currently owns the copyright must relinquish it to the extent that they allow anyone to reuse or modify the image. That's the kind of permission the copyright holder needs to give. Simply giving permission for the media to be used on Wikipedia is not sufficient. I am quite certain that last edit was an instance of vandalism. I have kept an eye on that particular article for years and it is a frequent target of vandalism. Very little information about this subject exists, and if the information added by the IP user would be correct, that would mean the subject had recently been identified, which in itself would be a minor sensation. I wanted to thank you for your work reformatting the talk page associated with "Malmstrom AFB", specifically the claims regarding UFO interference with the nuclear missiles deployed there. I'm afraid I lost my temper more than once due to my frustration, and was unable to maintain a very professional or profitable assessment of Wikipedia's policies. After your hard work formatting -- and particularly your suggestion that the addition of "some formatting that will break it up visually, without compromising coherence or otherwise integrity" -- I was able to see how any considered contemplation of the issues might well discourage the very people I have been trying to convince. If nothing else, your attempt to relieve that discouragement shows considerable tolerance and sympathy. It also convinced me that a more appropriate response to the claims under examination would be to correct the errors instead of merely deleting them as I first proposed. This was accomplished to my satisfaction, so I no longer have any objections to content. Thank you for that.
