Nellore (Telugu: నెల్లూరు, Urdu: نیلّور, Hindi: नेल्लोर) is a city located in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is the headquarters of the Potti Sri Ramulu Nellore District, formerly Nellore district. It is of strategic commercial importance as it lies between the cities of Vijayawada and Madras(Chennai). It is located on the banks of the Penna river. Nellore is also famous for its production of mica(gudur)lemon(gudur) and agricultural products such as rice and it is also famous for other temples like Narasimha swamy konda, Jonnavada Kamakshi Ammavari temple, Ayyappa Temple, Golagamudi Venkaya Swami Temple.

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple (Nellore), located on the banks of the Penna River, dates from the 12th century.

Geography

Nellore city is located at 14°25′N 79°58′E / 14.417°N 79.967°E / 14.417; 79.967.[1] It has an average elevation of 18 metres (62 feet).

It is frequently affected by cyclones. In summer, water is scarce in some areas. Its surrounding districts are Ongole, Cuddapah, Chittoor. The Bay of Bengal runs past its eastern periphery, Ongole to the north, Cuddappah to the west and Chittoor to the south. The places which are also near to Nellore are hugely populated such as Gudur, Kavali, Sulurpeta, Kovur, Buchireddipalem, Sriharikota(ISRO is situated here.). Dargamitta, Buja Buja Nellore, K.P. Housing Colony, Magunta layout are highly populated residential areas in and around Nellore city. Kasumuru Dargah is also famous which is located near Nellore. Recently south Asia's biggest port KrishnaPatnam Port was inaugurated at Krishnapatnam which is around 25 km from Nellore,with the most sophisticated infrastructure equivalent to Singapore's sea port famous temle is penchalakona in nellore district and a village called nagulavellature whare sri venkaiah swamy was born and brought up

Nellore is the headquarters of the district. It contributes to ten seats in the state legislative assembly and one Indian Parliament seat. In 2005, Nellore was changed from a town into a Corporation.

Demographics

As of the 2001 Indian census,[2] Nellore has a population of 378,947 (agglomeration 554,922). Both males and females constitute 50% of the population. Nellore has an average literacy rate of 76% for males and 68% for females, higher than the national average of 59.5%. 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Talpagiri Rangantha Swamy Temple is a very famous temple situated here on the Banks of River Pennar, dates from the 6th century but has been in history records from 12th century. Tikkana Somayaji the 2nd of the Kavitrayam wrote 15 chapters (parvaalu) of Andhra Mahabharatamu in the same temple. Next to it is situated the Desikan Temple. These temples are well maintained.
