Thank you for your initial guidance and the latest detailed critique of the above - very useful indeed. In fact now as I look more into the article I see more of such wrinkles. For sure I will address as many of these as I can. When I came across this article about two years ago it was dire, so I am actually very pleased with its current state even though I see the gaps to 'Good article' status. If it fails this time, so be it, but I will continue to work on it Hjamesberglen (talk) 13:32, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Portrait of Count Stanislas Potocki[edit]

Hi Chiswick Chap. I was pleased to review your recent article and learn more about the history of British architecture. Given your extensive contributions to art and architecture on WP Visual Arts, I was wondering if you would like to collaborate on possible FA project Portrait of Count Stanislas Potocki by Jacques-Louis David from 1781. It's a fascinating work, especially in terms of Enlightenment-era politics of Western and Eastern Europe and David's influence beyond France. I figure you might be busy with other work, but it would be great to find another experienced editor like yourself to work with. Sending my best wishes. Ppt91 (talk) 18:32, 24 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for the suggestion and the flattering remarks. However, I've never attempted a GA on a painting, let alone ventured into the shoals of FAC with such a thing; and I'd be out of my depth in all the dimensions you mention, from David to Enlightenment-era politics. I wish you well with the article, where there looks to be wide scope for development for someone of your knowledge and interests. Chiswick Chap (talk) 10:13, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation of Palantír[edit]

Paul Magnussen I really don't have the linguistic background that this seems to require. I'm happy to lend moral support. But I don't see any sign that you've edited the article? What is the "syntax" issue and who complained? Chiswick Chap (talk) 20:12, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

To clarify, I can't take some of the content from my own website (the African Wild Dog Conservancy), a site I created and text I authored? Would paraphrasing then be acceptable? 1enchilada (talk) 20:04, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

1enchilada: Please read WP:COPYVIO closely. You are not allowed to paraphrase anything closely, e.g. if it says "The man bit the dog" you may not write "The hominid chewed the canid". You may quote very short passages if you attribute and cite them, i.e. you can say "The New York Times stated 'The man bit the dog.'"[1] but if [1] is the AWD website, then anything quoted, paraphrased, or cited from there DOES NOTHING to establish Notability: and it is the lack of notability that is getting the article deleted. Therefore, what you need to do is to find MULTIPLE, RELIABLE, INDEPENDENT (not connected in any way to AWD) sources that discuss AWD, and do so IN DETAIL (passing mentions are no use). Copying big chunks of material from AWD will thus totally fail to protect the article, and will instead get you blocked from editing for copyright infringement. I do hope this is clear. I have created {{Sketch Map of Middle-earth}}, which embodies your map and the clickable regions into a single object (as I did for the legendarium diagram). The clickable regions are copied from the version in Middle-earth, though I assume there is no reason for them to be different in other articles such as Geography of Middle-earth. It will make it easier to make the clickable version available wherever the map is used (nine articles in en:wp) and it is less likely that the links will be removed by confused editors. One minor point: I have capitalised 'Map' to match the file name, though WP standards would keep it lower-case. Should I change it?

NB: I feel that The Annotated Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion belong somewhere in {{J. R. R. Tolkien}}. Do you intend to add them? -- Verbarson  talkedits 17:07, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Tree of life (biology)[edit]

On 19 February 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Tree of life (biology), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Charles Darwin used a tree of life model (sketch pictured) to conceptualise his theory of evolution? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Tree of life (biology). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Tree of life (biology)), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Page mover?[edit]

Hi! I've deleted this at your request. I wondered, would you find the page mover right useful? – it would allow you move pages without leaving a redirect when appropriate (i.e., in cases such as this one). If so, just say the word. In any case, thanks for all the good stuff you do. Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 12:39, 19 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Justlettersandnumbers - thank you. Yes, you're right, it would be convenient, and save scarce admin effort. Let's go for it. Chiswick Chap (talk) 13:42, 19 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I've done that. I'm not going to leave you the standard wordy template with various warnings etc, but if you want to see what that looks like it's here. Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 18:04, 19 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

ImageMap changes[edit]

I recently discovered and have been playing with ImageMapEdit. I have used it to amend the clickable areas on the sketch map of Middle-earth - that is to say, I have not changed the template, but there is an amended version at User:Verbarson/sandbox#ME. I have brought the rectangular areas into better registration with the intended target and/or the text on the map, and have replaced some of the larger areas with polygons. I have also removed the ", Middle-earth" from the displayed text of Bree, Moria and Rohan.

I thought you would appreciate the chance to check it out and comment, before I change the current template. -- Verbarson  talkedits 16:02, 19 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

David Rowe's book on proverbs in LOTR[edit]

Rowe's book is cited in two chapters of a serious book from a serious publisher:

Stuart, Robert. "Aristocratic Racism: Gobineau in Gondor." In Tolkien, Race, and Racism in Middle-earth, pp. 267-338. Springer Publishing, 2022.

Stuart, Robert. "Tolkien and Anti-Semitism: The Jewish Question and the Question of the Dwarves." Tolkien, Race, and Racism in Middle-earth 235-265. Springer Publishing, 2022.

Also cited in Proverbium, the international proverb journal:

Unseth, Peter. "Beatrice Grimshaw’s Proverb Splicer and Her Artful Use of Proverbs." Proverbium: Yearbook of International Proverb Scholarship 37, no. 1 (2020): 341-358.

The book is worth citing in "Relevant Literature" Pete unseth (talk) 21:08, 20 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the inside information. The immediate problem is that we can't use the evidence here to cite an item in Further reading as we don't cite things there, nor do the supporting citations belong in the text; and if we put the book in the article unsupported, other editors will remove it as self-published. I see little value in 'Further reading' in the first place; we'd do better to use some claim from the the book (and indeed in the other Proverbium papers) in the article, to cite it in the usual way, and then to support it with a note about why the book is reliable. Chiswick Chap (talk) 04:55, 21 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Chiswick Chap. I'll find ways to use somethings from the book itself. I've previously cited academic articles by myself and had people criticize me. If I used a pen name like 99% of Wikipedians, nobody would give it a thought. Pete unseth (talk) 18:32, 21 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I certainly wouldn't advise citing yourself - if you have something you want to use in that way, best put it as a suggestion on the talk page and wait for someone else to action it. Chiswick Chap (talk) 18:38, 21 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Internal phylogeny of Archaeplastida[edit]

The groups of Rhodelphidia and Picozoa are ignored in your todays edits of Archaeplastida (either in external, or internal phylogeny). Is it an intention? Your simplified version of Archaeplastida internal phylogeny ignores the recent research, analysing the position of Rhodelphidia (sister to Rhodophyta; DOI:10.1038/s41586-019-1398-6, 2019) and Picozoa (sister to Rhodelphidia + Rhodophyta; DOI: 10.1038/s41467-021-26918-0, 2021), both confirmed by an independent analysis (DOI: 10.1098/rsob.210376, 2022).

IMO ignoring recent studies is not the optimal way for correction of original research. So I recommend to include at least a comment that if Archaeplastida shell be considered as a clade (as written in perex), Picozoa and Rhodelphidia are probably their internal groups (with refs I have provided in previous sentence). Petr Karel (talk) 14:27, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Petr Karel: No, I've not been trying to ignore anything, just to resolve the OR and to illustrate the trees. Please feel free to insert a comment as you suggest. I would caution however (especially in high-level articles for general readers) that we should minimise the use of recent primary research papers whose findings can quickly be contradicted by further work; Wikipedia policy actually requires us to use reliable secondary sources like systematic review articles and textbooks. Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:28, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your answer. I am not a native speaker (English is my third foreign language, only for passive use), so I do not intend to add any new text paragraph (it would be only a computer translation, and I know from my home wikipedia, that it is not optimal), neither I know English secondary sources as textbooks (I follow only the research papers). I wanted only make a comment that important information (included in the yesterdays' version of cladogram) may be missing now. Petr Karel (talk) 15:18, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly DYK for Harold H. Piffard[edit]

Hello! So i'm wondering if I'm allowed do a DYK nomination for your Harold H. Piffard article you made a GA. I already have a hook for it being "... that Harold H. Piffard, a British artist and illustrator, became interested in aviation and, in 1909, flew in an aircraft he built himself?". Just want to know if I can do it. Onegreatjoke (talk) 21:01, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Onegreatjoke: Thank you for asking as we agreed. I'm happy for this one to go ahead, but we need a much shorter and more catchy hook than that. Maybe
... that the artist tried to fly on a Hummingbird?

(Manton, Colin (2006). "Harold Piffard of Bedford Park, Artist and Aviator Extraordinaire". Brentford & Chiswick Local History Journal. 15.)

Something like that, I think. Chiswick Chap (talk) 21:07, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Brief stop by[edit]

I came across this blog today (while looking something else up) and thought you would appreciate it:

https://stephencwinter.com/2022/02/05/arwen-vanimelda-namarie-what-does-aragorn-say-to-arwen-at-cerin-amroth/

Interesting blog!

Hope all is well. I can't remember if your email address still works. It has been a while since I last wrote. Is it still the same one as you have set-up for when people click on 'Email this user'? Carcharoth (talk) 00:44, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes.
PS. I recently learnt of the existence of an eye-wateringly expensive academic collection of Tolkien secondary sources and added it here. The book is here. Currently a snip at £1,150. I have heard even dedicated collectors of Tolkien-related materials blanch at the thought of forking out for that... Carcharoth (talk) 01:44, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
a) Bizarre price, interesting marketing concept (surely scholars have access already, scholarly fans have already read the major critics, and non-scholarly fans won't be interested? ... and none of them will have the dough, or want to part from it if they do). Hmm.
b) I've read a large part of these snippets, indeed. (34/80 I have to hand, and I've read and used many of the rest in articles)
c) I suppose the list of snippets / ToC might be useful as a prompt for what else to read...
d) ... and we seem to have GAs on most of the topics covered!

My Tolkien's sentience dilemma (" ... that Tolkien was not sure if Orcs were made of slime or were corrupted Elves? ") has just done well at DYK - nice to have anything so abstruse read widely. Chiswick Chap (talk) 04:54, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I read the article! :-) The marketing 'concept' seems to be to just generate revenue from academic licenses presumably (as a convenient one-stop shop for those not familiar with the field). Carcharoth (talk) 08:40, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Great! I guess that at 1k a pop, you only have to sell to 100 uninformed libraries and £100k is yours for the spreadsheet ... Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:42, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Going to the other extreme, I also came across an open-access journal issue (336 pages) that I really hope you have not seen yet (it says published 2022, but I am not sure from which point it was available online), as it is a joy to read through if you like this sort of thing. The journal is Thersites: Journal for Transcultural Presences & Diachronic Identities from Antiquity to Date. Volume 15 (2022) is 'There and Back Again: Tolkien and the Greco-Roman World' - the introduction is a very clear overview of the contents and the rationale behind the collection and its themes (e.g. "One such emergent theme is that of decline, a perennial subject of GrecoRoman antiquity that captivated Tolkien to such a degree that it arguably became Middle-earth’s Leitmotiv") - enjoy! Carcharoth (talk) 21:37, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent! I've built Pezzini into Decline and fall in Middle-earth. I think there is now enough material to write something I'd been thinking about for a while, Tolkien and the classical world (or similar title, please suggest something crisper!). The One Ring has fairly obvious parallels with Plato's Republic, and everyone has seen the links of Númenor and Atlantis, but the thersites volume covers a far wider range. Chiswick Chap (talk) 09:43, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
What you have done (amazingly quickly, even with the re-use of your own text from elsewhere) looks great. I am still astonished, every time I check back, how the garden is still blooming and new flowers springing forth! :-) I had to chuckle at the stat you added here. On a quick read through, I think I may have more of those sources, but may have read less of them (if that makes sense)! Need to do more reading! It is an interesting list of sources though - I think many versions of that list could be constructed, and many people would disagree over what to put on it and what to leave off (and it would be out-of-date as soon as it was published). One last thought while I am typing this - I was wondering if you would ever consider (or feel able to consider) tackling alliterative verse - this has fallen a way from its former featured article status, but maybe what you and others have written on Wikipedia on Tolkien's alliterative verse is sufficient, but I mention it because that will likely need updating with the forthcoming The Battle of Maldon: together with The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth - [Beorhthelm's Son]). I see that it will include an unpublished piece by Tolkien titled 'The Tradition of Versification in Old English'. Maybe it is a good thing Wikimedia doesn't have an 'excited' emoji option. :-) Oh wow, I searched using that title, and found both this blog and that entire website dedicated to the study of Tolkien's alliterative verse! I think that was only launched recently (late 2022?) but I might be wrong - had you heard of that project before? Carcharoth (talk) 21:50, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'll have a look at Alliterative verse, maybe I can help a little there. Do you fancy reviewing any of my GANs? Chiswick Chap (talk) 09:01, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I will try. I got distracted by the memoriam issue I pinged you about, and re-reading the old discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Middle-earth/archive10#Non-free use and the talk page discussions at Northern courage in Middle-earth... (and am going nowhere near the Turkish/Gollum thing - sorry). Will try to get back to finding a GA to review in the next few weeks. Carcharoth (talk) 18:14, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've added a Celtic to match the Classical... by the way, what do you think about the gigantic Etymology section in Orc? I'd say it's barely relevant. Chiswick Chap (talk) 12:21, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The orc page does seem a bit disjointed. No time to read it properly. I had to laugh at the Jackson-Weinstein bit, though in a rather hollow way. Carcharoth (talk) 15:02, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Possible dyk nom for Tolkien and the Norse?[edit]

Hey again. I was just wondering if you want to nominate Tolkien and the Norse for DYK. If so, then we could probably brainstorm some hooks. The first one that came to my head was "... that J. R. R. Tolkien was influenced by the Norse when making Middle-earth, such as naming the fictional forest of Mirkwood after Myrkviðr?" or some other thing he did. Need of help[edit]

Hi, I know this is going to sound strange but I need advice on a situation I'm having. Over at wikimedia commons there's an IP who is trying to delete one of my uploaded images for no reason except for one apparent insult, and I don't know what to do about it. The only contribution from this IP is nominating my image for deletion. Here is the page: [4]. Any insight is massively welcome, since I have exactly 0 experience in this kind of situations. ☽ Snoteleks ☾ 15:28, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I see you've nominated Flowering plant at WP:GAN ... your call, I can add this template with all the other green template bars at the bottom of the article, or not, whatever you think will be better for the GAN nomination. I just finished up the last of the lists yesterday (but I'll continue to do some puttering to standardize the formats). All but 3 are featured lists, so far. - Dank (push to talk) 15:44, 15 May 2023 (UTC) Autocollapsed, I mean. - Dank (push to talk) 22:19, 17 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Would this replace Template:Angiosperm families? That's already in the article, and it's a very bulky and awkward template. Their subject matter is effectively the same, though in your case via a sensible level of indirection. If so, the new template, which is obviously far more compact, would be a marked improvement, and I'd be happy to go ahead with that. If we're to have both, it makes matters worse, and I'd oppose it. Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:37, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Done. I don't usually edit "top-importance" plant articles, but I feel reasonably secure here because it's just a navbox and because it's up at WP:GAN ... I'll ask the reviewer for their opinion when the article gets a reviewer. - Dank (push to talk) 13:00, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you insist...[edit]

Posting this here because the question is off topic for a talk page. I'm not new to wikipedia, I simply insist on not creating an account for reasons I explained several times. I'm not evading any blocks, if that's what you're concerned about, as I was never blocked, in fact I chose to stay out of articles concerning american politics when a topic ban was suggested (but not followed through) during an ANI discussion, years ago. If you really must know, you can check the entire IP range, as most activity from it is mine. Admins and other long time users are aware of me, Springee in particular, but I don't believe it would be helpful to bother him about me again, especially when there's no real reason for it.

Of course, none of this changes the fact that I'm correct about the site policy, which I have researched thoroughly. 46.97.170.151 (talk) 16:37, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Very good work!
Well, Tolkien did his best NOT to describe any fictional religion in Middle-earth. There is a cult of Sauron in Númenor, briefly mentioned; we get to hear that the Men of Gondor turn to the West and allude vaguely to "that which will ever be", i.e. Valinor (Elvenhome), beyond the uttermost West, before they sit down to eat; and Frodo and Sam invoke Elbereth (Varda) in a moment of darkness and desperation. Scholars have argued that because of his Catholic faith, he took care not to create anything that would conflict; and because Middle-earth is set long before the time of Christ, hints of Christianity can only be extremely indirect. Scholars like Tom Shippey have pointed out that the Men fleeing from something terrible in the East could be running from the Fall and the Expulsion from the Garden of Eden, under the terrible curse described in the Book of Genesis. Hope this helps...

Economy of Middle Earth, quote boxes, etc.[edit]

I'm not going to fight you on it. This was my reasoning:

Per Template:Quote box "this use is not advised in articles." I think I read somewhere that it causes issues with display on mobile devices too.

I changed the translation of a verse use a verse translation template because: It allows for inclusion of the language identification markup, and less importantly, the blockyness of the table version was somewhat jarring / cramping of the text. (Hohum @) 18:51, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Animal page image[edit]

Hello, thanks for opening discussion. My opinion about the image on the Animal page is that interpreting the image's "diversity" from a perspective that is purely phyla-proportional is not helpful.

The image serves the purpose of representing what an "animal" is for the reader (as in, a person). Your edit only removed examples that readers would have likely been more able to recognize, the mammal tiger and the bird blue jay. Having at least one token land fauna on the image helps to ground the topic in a familiar reality, showing the reader the extent of what the topic covers, which is why it's a technique that is employed by almost all other relevant taxonomy page images on Wikipedia. Excluding them because it's technically more proportionally accurate only harms the understandability of the image.

Using the original image does not "under-represent" the invertebrates, they still make up the majority of the image. The edited image does something of a disservice to the human perspective on what an animal is (and in my opinion also does a disservice to Animalia's evolutionary extent), by not including any land vertebrates whatsoever. RoverdriveX (talk) 09:19, 17 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for explaining your point of view. However, there are over 25 "invertebrate" phyla, so having even one vertebrate could be thought over-representation, and having several is certainly unbalanced, in the old familiar unthinking and uninformed direction. Actually even talking about "invertebrates" is old thinking, implying the are some small, minor, insignificant group, at best a junior cousin to proper animals, vertebrates, mammals, and primates. No, those are not typical animals at all. The animals are highly diverse and mainly marine. The image in use at least gives a hint of that, no more. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:38, 17 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Please do not imply that my perspective is "unthinking and uninformed". I understand your reasoning, I know that you think that it is best for that image to be proportionally accurate to animal phyla, but I am knowingly disagreeing with it.
I know that including the mammal and the bird will cause the image's representation to become phyla-disproportionate. I am arguing from the perspective of helping our average human readers understand the topic of animals, even if that comes at the "cost" of vertebrate over-representation. Removing examples of animals that the average reader would recognize, for the purpose of maintaining phyla proportion, is harmful to the reader's understanding, because you've taken away their most grounding personally-relatable examples that they were using to put the other animals into perspective.
No information is lost by having the land animals remain there. However, information is lost when you take them out of the image... and not even replace them with anything. You outright reduced the amount of animals present in the image from 18 to 15. The image is titled "Animal diversity" and you have made the image less diverse. RoverdriveX (talk) 12:13, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
With respect, that's missing the point. It is actively misleading to skew the representation of a certain group, and it is definitely unencyclopedic to reinforce people's misconceptions rather than to correct them. As for the mere number of images, there is no standard anywhere that says we should have any particular number, though if there is one, it is the number one, a single representative, if such can be found. Your Tolkien articles[edit]

Do you ever feel that they are getting a little WP:WALLEDGARDEN-y? ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 19:29, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Quite a question! I think the comment applies more to me than the articles, so I take care to address unrelated topics such as in biology as well. On the Tolkien articles themselves, the cited scholars and critics are free to take any angle they like, and they ceaselessly look for 'new' aspects, like modern folklore, the Classical era of Greece and Rome, film, war, Modernism, fantasy, and so on. So, no, each article covers its own scope with reference to something outside as well as Tolkien's own writings, and that something is always different. The articles on the project thus contain discussion, citations, and wikilinks, all three to areas beyond Tolkien, as a walled garden never does. A Secret Vice[edit]

Dear Chiswick Chap,

It's evident that you are an expert on all things Tolkien, so I was wondering if I could ask you: would it be possible for you to turn to the article on Tolkien's 1931 speech and republished book, A Secret Vice? I'd like to improve it, but I'm a fairly new editor, and it's in such a mess that I don't really know where to start - Frzzltalk;contribs 16:13, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Frzzl: Many thanks. The structure (organisation into sections) isn't actually at all bad; the "Reception" is clearly scanty; the most obvious issue is that the "Content" section is overbalanced by one enormous quotation, and very little is said on the actual contents. If you want to do something useful, it'd be to summarize the essay in a few hundred words; and further, to detail the additions (the previous omissions in particular) in the 2016 critical edition. The Music of The Lord of the Rings Films[edit]

Hello,

I noticed that you contributed heavily to Music of The Lord of the Rings film series and that you seemed to be in possession of The Music of The Lord of the Rings Films by Doug Adams. If you still have access to that book, could you tell me what pages state that Viggo Mortensen sang "Aragorn's Coronation" and "The Lay of Beren and Lúthien"? Lord Theoden (talk) 03:08, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I do. Pages 350-352 "The Fellowship Reunited" names him and give the words of the coronation song that Aragorn sings. But The Lay of Beren and Lúthien is not there, nor is it in the Index. Chiswick Chap (talk) 05:24, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks!
I also wanted to say that I admire and appreciate the extensive work that you have done for all things related to Tolkien and Middle-earth. I've really enjoyed reading the various articles you've created or primarily written and learning new things about Tolkien themes, influences, interpretations, and so many more topics. --Lord Theoden (talk) 04:22, 21 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks! Chiswick Chap (talk) 07:06, 21 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sigh[edit]

(The sigh is not directed at you). It's just that on pl wiki there is an argument in AfD that having a taxa named after any fictional entity grants that entity notability. So there's pl:Glaurung and I fear that if I were to try to AfD it there, it would be kept b/c of that tidbit :( Btw, what list do you mean? Do we have a list of taxa named after Middle Earth characters? Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 12:26, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Piotrus: It's List of things named after J. R. R. Tolkien and his works. There are tons of taxa. Polish Wikipedia can do as it likes, but over here we don't feel that taxa alone are enough to elevate minor ME characters to notability. This is partly because many of the taxa are named indiscriminately, as the scientist seeks 30 names for closely-related species of ant or whatever. There would be a better case for one-off names with a special reason for them, like being as scary as Gollum. Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:42, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reverted Edition[edit]

You just reverted my edition on 'Battle of Helm's Deep' article and I can't understand why. All the information I added was true and I even referenced it. I also added some flags and made the article look better so I would like you to reconsider it and let me make the article better which is, in my opinnion, the main objective of us Wiki editors. Leyomvi (talk) 20:38, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(by talk reader) @Leyomvi: Although you registered your account years ago, you've made all your edits in the last week. Do not presume to speak for "us Wiki editors". Please read WP:NOTFANSITE. You did not provide a reference I see, and everything you added was unsourced nonsense. Please go find another wiki if you're going to add dreck. Chris Troutman (talk) 23:11, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'll answer you quitely since you seem to have taken this quite deep and you decided to attack me instead of trying to comprehend what I texted you.
Firstly, I've been colaborating as Wiki editor for quite the years, but only in the spanish wiki wince I speak spanish. Don't think I would try to start an argument with a Wiki editor without knowing what I'm saying. And even if that was the case, you can't just decide that because I have colaborated less than you your opinions are directly over mine, I'm just trying to explain my point to you.
I don't know why but it seems that you're right when you say I did not add the references, probably I forgot, I must admit it; but you can search them yourself, all I edited was extracted from TolkienGateway and the LordOfTheRingsWiki, two fan wikis that are used in Tolkien articles as references all the time.
Finally, I would like to ask you again to reconsider accepting my edit as I believe it improves the article in content, appearance and narrative quality. Furthermore, some of the informations that is shown in the article nowadays is false, it is our work to prevent that. After all, we editors are here to make articles as good as possible for the people who read them, aren't we?
Hope you can take this considerations in good faith.
Bye. Leyomvi (talk) 23:25, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. I'm sorry you found the reversion uncomfortable, but it was correct. As Chris Troutman says, the material was suitable for a fansite, not Wikipedia. No articles on the WikiProject use those sources, which are user-edited and thus, like Wikipedia, do not meet the criteria for WP:RS, None of the articles use flagicons, either. DYK for Thomas Carlyle[edit]

On 10 August 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Thomas Carlyle, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Thomas Carlyle (pictured) was the first writer to use the expression "meaning of life"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Thomas Carlyle. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Thomas Carlyle), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Autocollapsible navbox[edit]

(Regarding my reverted edit) I must be misunderstanding the template, because the navbox never collapses in my screen even when it is set to autocollapse. Navboxen expand when alone and collapse with their brothers ... usually the best thing, as alone=you want to see it all, this is a specialised article with just one navbox applicable; in company=lots of possible nav paths, you choose. Chiswick Chap (talk) 17:08, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Request for a look at Hypericum sechmenii[edit]

Hi Chiswick Chap, now that the GAN drive is over I've been looking back towards content production. A while ago I took Hypericum sechmenii through a very thorough GA review and was able to get it promoted. The article has been stable for a while, and after a fresh look around that confirmed there isn't any additional information I've missed, I am starting to think about trying for FA. I've never gone through that process, and it honestly seems quite daunting to me. I would greatly appreciate it if you'd take just a quick glance at the article to see if it has any merit, and if it does perhaps give a few things I could take care of in advance of FAC so that it is less overwhelming. Thank you in advance! Very Respectfully, Fritzmann (message me) 16:46, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Fritzmann2002: Thanks for asking. I'm more of a GA person than a, hm, denizen of Turkish plants at FAC. The standard approach in your situation is to seek Peer Review, which is a well-formalized process; its approval, if it can be called that, is entirely informal, but it certainly has the capability of detecting a variety of FAC-level blunders.
If you want my tuppence 'orth, I'd guess that the single-paragraph lead would come in for unwelcome attention, with comments about being too brief and not mentioning all the sections of the article.
Someone is certain to pick you up on "commonly called": if this is a rare and recently-named species, people probably don't commonly name it at all. It's also doubtful whether a Turkish "common" name should even be given in the lead.
Nitpicking attention will be given to grammar and punctuation, so for instance "flowers with five petals that usually bloom..." could attract a comment about petals not being things that bloom, so you should probably write "five-petalled flowers that usually bloom..." or something of that sort, and don't quote me on the use of hyphens about which they are very particular, and their usage certainly isn't mine.
I notice, too, that you sometimes say "<techie term> (simple explanation)" and sometimes "simple description (<techie term>)", e.g. you write "egg-like (ovate)" but "sessile (with no leafstalks)": I would guess that someone would say you need to be consistent and always do it one way or the other but not both.
In the references, you sometimes provide an English translation of a Turkish title, and sometimes not.
There is no need (aka, don't do it) to give retrieval dates for scientific papers like [3] Ocak et al.
I've no idea why you'd repeat "IPNI" three times in [9]; in fact, none of the three instances seem to be justified as you've just spelt out what the acronym means.
Since with [9] you spell out the full name of the index, you'll surely be picked up at FAC on [12] "POWO", which should certainly be spelit out in full at the start; the remaining two mentions of the same thing again look to be redundant, since Kew is the publisher.
In [13], you give the Turkish name of the Meteorology Authority, but in [10] you have the university name translated into English. Again, you'd best decide on doing it one way or the other.
Personally I find the use of page numbers scattered directly in the main text following the references, like "[3]:593", obtrusive and untidy; I also can't see the point as [3] is a short paper, pages 591–594 so it really doesn't seem to be worth identifying single-page subranges (the normal scientific practice, on Wikipedia and off it, is to cite the paper and give its full page range, that's all).
If by "unhealthy" you mean "having a population so small that it's in danger of extinction" then probably best to say so in some form; the plants are probably fit and well.
I see that both images are fair-use and have non-free usage rationales. FAC may well query the use of such an image in the infobox; if they accept it, they will not use the image on the front page of Wikipedia.
Personally I'd want the pollen image caption to be keyed rather more closely to the cited text.
I've made a couple of small copy-edits which you're free to do as you like with. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 18:48, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Goodness, thank you for some excellent gouge, as we like to say in the Navy! It definitely shows that there are many facets to the FAC process that I hadn't considered yet. I'll be sure to take all of it into consideration; this gives me a good standard to strive towards. Very Respectfully, Fritzmann (message me) 20:13, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Tolkien's Legendarium - image and template[edit]

I was looking at {{Tolkien's legendarium}} (on HotH). It occurred to me that there is no mention of poetry in the diagram, which would be at least as relevant as 'Paintings, Runes, [and] Scripts'. Would you consider adding Poetry to the list on the bottom line? I would undertake to link it to Poetry in The Lord of the Rings. -- Verbarson  talkedits 23:01, 12 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Added. The whole line has shifted slightly with the new text as it's centred. Chiswick Chap (talk) 03:25, 13 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Template updated accordingly, but I can't see the new image on The History of The Hobbit - I've purged the article and the template, and restarted the browser. The new version appears on Tolkien's legendarium. Puzzled.
If I edit HotH and change the |upright= parameter on the image and preview it, the new version appears, but not for other changes. Perhaps that specific size has got cached. It'll probably reset eventually. I assume it doesn't affect other people. -- Verbarson  talkedits 09:22, 13 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I often have that problem, it always clears after a day or so, so it must be a lag between the Commons and 'pedia servers. Many thanks! Chiswick Chap (talk) 09:40, 13 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Being curious, I have tried to nudge the Legendarium diagram on HotH.
  • Edited to |upright=1.8, resulting in an updated image including poetry.
  • Re-edited (not reverted) to |upright=1.7, which restored the old version without poetry.
I shall just have to wait for time to do its best. -- Verbarson  talkedits 17:57, 13 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Domestication[edit]

I'm skeptical that changes this sweeping [6] are a good idea. Much of that material was sourced, and the article has now lost sourcing, meanwhile you've made it partially redundant with another article. I would try to work some of the original material back in with all its sources, and pare down the duplication.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  08:21, 19 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

SMcCandlish: Thanks for your concern. I'm working on this old and long article in stages, as many different things need to be done to it. All Wikipedia articles contain overlaps; this one contained large and unjustified overlaps with genetic engineering and plant breeding (for instance), and as those topics are really not "Domestication" at all, I make no apology for removing them with such sources as they had. The founder crop details, on the other hand, are certainly a core element of the domestication process, alongside the domestication of the major livestock animals. I will continue to add sources and materials to the article. The material I removed in that particular edit included 2 paragraphs which were wholly uncited; and a paragraph which talked of "earliest human attempts" and then retracted itself with "but this appears to be a localised phenomenon resulting from cultivation of stands of wild rye, rather than a definitive step towards domestication.", i.e. it accepted it was basically a rabbit-hole if not off-topic altogether. I don't think you'd actually wish to reinstate those, certainly not in their previous form. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:32, 19 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Christopher Lee GAN message on my talk page[edit]

Came back to this account for the first time this week after exactly a year and I saw your message about it for the first time today as I was looking through my talk page, as I was about to archive it. This probably isn't the best place for it, but I want to kinda explain what happened there.

I wanted to end the FAC thing starting in around March-April of 2022. I never gave out a reason for why I wanted to end the improvements, as well as I remember. Around that time, I saw "William Utermohlen", I saw how many of the attempts I thought I had made to genuinely improve the article, only for it to fail every time, I saw that, and I realised that "William Utermohlen" was very very quickly becoming "Nonmetal" 2.0 (hope you know what I mean by that), and I really didn't want that to happen. So I decided to call it quits.

When I was basically forced to withdraw there at candidate 4, I pretty much stopped paying any attention to what was happening here on Wikipedia, and I pretty much didn't care for anything about the whole Wikipedia thing. This was why I was being really slow to work on GANs. and I just completely left after a bit.

I've been thinking about trying to work on the article again after a year, I know that there's some stuff added from users that will not fit. But I have been looking back at the article for a bit, and I have realised that the article definitely doesn't work with criteria 1b (don't know if it would work for 1a either). I'm honestly a little worried about trying to return the article to FAC one more time. What if it does end up taking 10 more FACs like that Nonmetal article did? I don't know really.

So to quickly answer your question a bit too late, I just ran out of steam for everything on this website. Realmaxxver (talk) 20:31, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Bold in yoga ledes[edit]

Hi, reaching out about these reverts [7][8]. I see my edits can be read as saying western yoga is a subset of spiritual yoga – not my intention to introduce any changes in definition. Instead wanted to make the articles not seem to elevate coined phrases; neither "yoga as exercise" nor "yoga as therapy" seem to be more than descriptive titles. Would you consider trying to draft alternative boldless first sentences (even if the bold seems appropriate to you)? Hameltion (talk | contribs) 19:30, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for discussing, and yes, your edits did indeed seem (and still seem) to be saying just that. If "Yoga as exercise" was just a descriptive phrase, it would mean "The subset of the 2000-year-old spiritual practice called YaE" ... but it doesn't. Instead, it denotes a new kind of thing, for which the most common name is unfortunately just "Yoga", a straight homonym. The other names are way too academic, "Modern Postural Yoga" and so forth. So we have a name which is clear and which sounds descriptive, but which denotes a different thing altogether from the traditional things called Yoga. It is close to "Yoga for exercise", which is a commonly used term, addressing the same problem of nomenclature; but unfortunately "Yoga exercise class", a term which is in use, has rather grim institutional connotations, not sounding much like a self-motivating or leisure activity. I don't think that ditching the boldface is at all a good idea in this situation, as almost anything we do will make it look as if it's a subset of the spiritual practice; and talking about "Hatha yoga", which is also common, creates confusion in two different directions which you can read about in the article. In the case of "Yoga as therapy", the name "Yoga therapy" is actually in common use, and in a way I'd be happy for it to be the article's title and boldfaced lead term; but anything named "therapy" raises the ire of the strictly-medical brigade, who at once jump up and down and start arguing about evidence of medical effectiveness. The closeness of "Yoga as therapy" to "yoga therapy" is however reasonable, as it connects with meaning and practice; and trying to word around it won't help. So, in short, we are where we are for rather good reason: we're boxed in, and the choices all around, including along the path you're proposing, will rapidly upset the apple cart. Hope this is clear. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 20:25, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, that all seems fair. It's just one of my pet peeves to use bold for names that are neither official nor common. Brainstorming some other options...
Yoga as exercise: Yoga is a physical activity ... (remove as exercise to foreground the common name for yoga in the west)
Problem: this hopelessly confuses 2000-yr-old-yoga-as-spiritual-practice with the exercise kind: exactly what we must not do.
Yoga as therapy (if not going with yoga therapy): Yoga as exercise, consisting mainly of postures called asanas, is often practiced specifically with the intention of improving health as a gentle form of exercise and relaxation ...
Problem: this introduces a topic which isn't the subject of the Yoga-as-therapy article.
These seems like improvements, but I'm not an expert. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 21:05, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
These don't seem like improvements, among other things for all the reasons given. Chiswick Chap (talk) 12:45, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Insect internal phylogeny[edit]

Hi, just letting you know, since you've trimmed fossil groups and extra clades from Insect#Internal phylogeny, you might actually want to reconsider the sources being used for the cladogram? Sroka, Staniczek & Bechly 2014 and Prokop et al. 2017 are primarily about fossils. In particular, the former was the source for the phylogeny of the extinct groups Carbotriplurida and Bojophlebiidae as well as the use of the clade name Hydropalaeoptera (tbh this seems to be just another name for Palaeoptera, unless you counted Palaeodictyopteroidea as Palaeoptera). The latter was mainly about redefining Miomoptera and Hypoperlida as stem-Acercaria (or stem-Paraneoptera), but I see the cladogram didn't have them before your changes in the last few days anyway (so why was it included???). Monster Iestyn (talk) 20:16, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Well, thanks, I guess. I've been working on many aspects at once, and it's clear to me that an introductory Insect article can't have a full stem-and-crown-group-leading-to-modern phylogeny, if indeed anybody could construct such a monster anyway. So, on part one of your comment, yes, I was in the process of getting rid of the fossil stuff, and wondering about the sources before replacing them. The cladogram was actually fully-formed before the recent cleanup of the whole article, and insofar as I've touched it in the past few days, it has been to simplify it. I'll get rid of the fossil mentions and sources, make sure that the tree matches its (not yet included?) sources, and probably rework the Polyneoptera, but I'll do that a step at a time. (I think I remember quibbling with you about something several weeks ago, but whatever it was is trivial compared to the solid job you did on this).  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  15:34, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's very kind of you to say so. Many thanks! Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:38, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! George Griffith is at WP:FAC, see WP:Featured article candidates/George Griffith/archive1, and I figured this might be of interest to you since you reviewed the article at WP:GAN. If you are interested in weighing in on the FAC, your input would be appreciated. TompaDompa (talk) 16:22, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Chiswick Chap, on 5 December 2023 the photo Heinz_Grill.jpg was deleted. I wanted to give you the information that in the meantime another photo would be available for inclusion in the article: File:Heinz Grill.png. Robert Lindermayr (talk) 06:48, 24 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Oh good, thanks for letting me know. I'll pop it in the article now. Chiswick Chap (talk) 07:28, 24 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Robert Lindermayr, if you've published this image already, there is a risk of deletion as it will seem you have asserted copyright without a CC-by-SA license at that time. I know it's a bother, but it would be best to fill in an OTRS request to certify that you are releasing the image. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 09:53, 24 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Chiswick Chap, this photo was not published anywhere before and it is only uploaded on Wikimedia Commons. It is my own work, so I am the author, the photographer and the license I gave on Commons is: self|cc-by-sa-4.0
Is that not enough? If so, can you tell me from your experience what else is missing? Thank you and all the best Robert Lindermayr (talk) 14:04, 24 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, good. Yes, in that case it's quite safe. I thought you might have published the reportage somewhere. Happy Christmas! Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:28, 24 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, happy Christmas. Robert Lindermayr (talk) 16:05, 24 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

GA Review of Rice[edit]

Hi, Chiswick Chap. One of the reasons I prefer to have editors hold off on responding to GA reviews while I am in the middle of the review is because I generally cannot complete a review in one sitting. This creates a potential for edit conflicts if you are actively responding when I come back to address a different section. The second reason is when I'm addressing a section, say source review, I might get a small way through the list, then get called away in real life and save my progress. At that point, I might have, say, four items in the list. You address the items in the list, then I come back to make more progress, and add four more items to the list. Then you come back and handle those, and later I add a couple bit more. It gives the appearance that I keep moving the goalposts after you have already addressed the concerns. Meanwhile, on one of the many readings of the article that I'm making, I might notice another item that I didn't mention in section 1b and I'll add that after you've already addressed what was listed there before. It gets confusing and frustrating for everybody. So, if you don't mind, can you please give me a couple of days to go through it before you respond? I'll finish the review by adding a final review in section 7, then I'll leave a comment that pings you so you know the ball's in your court. I'll give you plenty of time to go back through it then, then when you let me know that you've addressed everything, ping me back and I'll go through it for the next round. Another aspect of that is that when the article itself keeps changing, your edits may introduce new issues that I need to go back and address. Instead, I'm going to use a single revision of the article, here, which is the 20:20 December 26 2023 version of the article, for the rest of this first round of the review. So feel free to continue editing the article itself, it won't mess me up. Thanks RecycledPixels (talk) 18:34, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

OK, let's do that. Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:32, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
