RfB Thank You spam

Thank you for participating in my RfB! I am very grateful for the confidence of the community shown at my RfB, which passed by a count of 154/7/2 (95.65%). I have read every word of the RfB and taken it all to heart. I truly appreciate everyone's input: supports, opposes, neutrals, and comments. Of course, I plan to conduct my cratship in service of the community. If you have any advice, questions, concerns, or need help, please let me know. Again, Thanks! You gotta watch this

Dude, is this the YouTube bulletin board? I feel like I'm on FARK, posting this, but here goes. Jay! Thought you might get a kick out of the blockbuster documentary movie I cobbled together recently about the roadtrip I took this summer. You can see what my brother looks like while fighting away the camera. Enjoy! – Scartol • Tok 21:09, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks to everyone who participated in my RfA, regardless of their !vote. I have withdrawn the nomination as a failure at 19 supports, 45 opposes, and 9 neutral statements.

As has been written and sung, you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you get what you need — and what I need is to go back to working on our shared project. Not everyone has to be an admin; there is a role for each of us. After reflection, I feel I don't have the temperament to secure community consensus as an admin at any point, and I will not be applying again in the future — and hey, that's all right, 'cause I stay true to the philosophy that adminship is no big deal: I tried, I failed, and now I'll return to doing what I've always done. I have an extremely strong belief in the consensus process, and the consensus was clear. I will be devoting my energies to volunteering at MedCab and working up a complete series of articles on the short stories of Ernest Hemingway, among lord knows what else. Thanks again to everyone who spared the time to weigh in on this one. It was made in better faith than it probably seemed.
Mr. IP Defender of Open Editing 14:23, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for weighing in. Perhaps the experiment was not as useful as I had hoped. At any rate, I did learn about the process and don't regret the attempt, as it has helped me come to a conclusion about what I want to do with my time here. Look forward to working w/ you in the future in my non-admin capacities! Mr. IP Defender of Open Editing 14:23, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Leads and hippos

Hi, Jay, I'm in need of your level-headed guidance. Good old Stevie is nearly ready for FAC and is currently undergoing a peer review, but I've run into a disagreement with another editor. The question is whether or not the article's lead is too long and if it contains unnecessary detail. I don't think does, but I did write the current version and am therefore biased. Do you have enough time to give it a quick read? The discussion is taking place on the article's talk page and I'd truly appreciate your feedback. Random happy note that made me think of you, BTW: I went to the zoo this past weekend and got to see the hippos fight over blocks of ice with fruit chunks frozen inside. At one point they were batting them around like they were playing a slow and sluggish version of pool volleyball. Made me smile. :) María (habla conmigo) 15:12, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

That's okay, Jay, let it all out! Everyone dislikes something about the MOS. I for one loathe logical quotations; how exactly is it logical? Also, it took me forever to learn how to properly format and link full dates, only to find that it's now discouraged. Gah. Anyway, hope the venting felt good. :) Take care, María (habla conmigo) 01:51, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Many thanks!

Thank you...

...for participating in my RfA, which closed with 119 in support, 4 neutral and 5 opposes. I'm honestly overwhelmed at the level of support that I've received from the community, and will do my best to maintain the trust placed in me. I 'm also thankful to those who opposed or expressed a neutral position, for providing clear rationales and superb feedback for me to build on. I've set up a space for you to provide any further feedback or thoughts, should you feel inclined to. However you voted, thanks for taking the time out to contribute to the process, it's much appreciated. Kind regards, Gazimoff 23:03, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Congrats on the GA at Tulipomania

Man, that was good and quick - I'll recommend again taking it to FA status (might have to get rid of a couple of pix). With your permission, I might even list it as a GA that I've worked on. Not that I have such a list, but this would be 3 - with Chambersburg, Pennsylvania and Option (finance). Oopps, this reminds me. "Options" couldn't get somebody with the technical expertise to review it for GA, and I searched around - so it was probably done too informally. Any suggestions?

Congrats again. Smallbones (talk) 15:46, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Have searched and finally found the Garber book. I'll put in any tweaks within the week. Its only about 80 pages on Tulipomania, and only about 40 on the other 2, so I'll say don't bother buying it. Last time I looked South Sea Company and Mississippi Company did not suffer much from the bubble bubble, but were a bit confusing. BTW Mackay completely missed that these events were about the origins of central banking.

cut down lede on Tulip mania??

1st: did I overdo the JSTOR (subscription required) thing? Crossed wires in any case.

I was a bit surprised at myself this afternoon, when I reverted somebody outright - it seems I can get a bit testy about this "baby."

Q suggested that the lede was too long. I think it summarizes the article pretty well, but it could be shortened a bit. After all, the material is all there later on. I'll try a draft for the last 2 paragraphs here, and let you have the final say.

Although Mackay's is a classic of popular journalism that is widely reprinted today, his account is controversial. Some modern scholars believe that the bubble was not as extraordinary as Mackay described.[4] There is also little evidence of significant economic distress after tulip mania. Peter Garber states that the bubble "was no more than a meaningless winter drinking game, played by a plague-ridden population that made use of the vibrant tulip market."[5]
Research on the tulip mania is difficult because of the very limited data from the 1630s—much of which comes from biased, anti-speculative sources.[6][7] Modern economists have proposed rational explanations for the high prices, though these are not universally accepted. Other flowers, such as the hyacinth, have also had high prices on the flower's introduction, that then fall dramatically. The high prices may also have been driven by expectations of a parliamentary decree that contracts could be voided for a small cost - thus lowering risk to buyers - rather than from an irrational speculative mania.

Well its a bit shorter. Smallbones (talk) 03:30, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

just saw your. I'm off to bed. Smallbones (talk) 03:39, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

A gazillion citations

Just to pick up a point i read from yllosubmarine's page - I know what you mean about citation overdose, sometimes it's just terrible to look at and read. But! I think this is where "reliable sources" helps - I often try to make sure not only that the citation supports something but also that the source can be used to learn even more about the subject (similar to an external link). However, that's a completely intense, almost insane, way of doing things. That's what I always aim for though! Sillyfolkboy (talk) 04:11, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

How to improve Tulip Mania

Hi again, I'll gladly support it if ever comes up for FA status review, but I'm not a good person to ask about what needs changing. I've never involved myself in FA discussions before. One thing I do notice is that the sub-sections in the 'Modern views' section needs a bit of rearrangement so that the arguments flow better. I'll do it myself if I get around to it. Best, & congratz on GA status, lk (talk) 10:49, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Gia Carangi

Hi. I saw that someone had added the link to Carangi to the Ryan White article. I'm afraid I have to disagree that her death from AIDS helped to raise awareness. Her death was poorly covered, and her life story wasn't publicized until the late 90s. Then her connection drew publicity. I don't honestly think she can be put in the same sentence with Magic Johnson, Kimberly Bergalis and Freddie Mercury regarding the impact of her death. Thoughts? Wildhartlivie (talk) 06:26, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

(butting in) I'd agree with that. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 12:30, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
I'm glad that you (and Casliber) agreed. I think that had it not been for Angelina Jolie's portrayal of Gia, she wouldn't even be known today as a model, much less an AIDS related death. That mini-series (and Jolie's accolades) raised her profile from the mundane. Ta! Wildhartlivie (talk) 01:21, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
It is a fairly good movie, albeit dark, gritty and sometimes uncomfortable. That's something one can count on from Angelina Jolie - if her character has dark corners, she will definitely explore them. Gia's life wasn't pretty, so it follows that her biography wouldn't be so either. Her life reminds me a bit of Amy Winehouse, in that she was a slow-motion trainwreck (although I hope Winehouse doesn't completely self-destruct). Actually, I think that the photo used in her article could be described similarly - dark, gritty and uncomfortable with dark corners lurking. The film is certainly worth a watch. Wildhartlivie (talk) 01:40, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I like Jolie in some things. I thought she was phenomenal in A Mighty Heart, but I wasn't so fond of Mr. & Mrs. Smith (it could have been the whole Brad Pitt thing). I'm fairly critical of someone playing mentally ill, I worked in that area too long and I can spot bad and good. Having said that, I thought Brad Pitt was really good in 12 Monkeys. Creepy good. Wasn't the mother in Gia played by Mercedes Ruehl? There may be good info out there on Gia, but it won't be all that easy to find. What I've seen is mostly post-death, and consists of pictures and tributes - not all that good for an article. Could be though! By the way, HOW did you get Netflix over the weekend? They were down, weren't they? Wildhartlivie (talk) 03:26, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
I waited for 5 days for my next film to arrive - Love in the Time of Cholera. I'm not sure about it, it's on now, we'll see. I'm not huge on films about obsessive love. As for the Gia article, you're right, there's likely not a lot - she was born, she was rebellious, she was a model, she was a drug addict, she had a wild and varied sex life, she contracted AIDS, she died. Six years of life. I don't mean to demean her, it's just that she wasn't all that huge until she died. I have material on many people, but not her. I looked at bit when we first discussed her and didn't find much. Wildhartlivie (talk) 05:13, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Dash it all - re:Tulipomania

I'd defintely keep Dash in the references at the bottom. But the quote is perhaps more of historical interest now and he's a couple of steps lower in scholastic quality than the others cited in this section.

The 5th and 6th paragraphs in the Mackay section that don't have "According to Mackay..." in them is a matter of readability. Ida thunk that people would realize that the whole section is "according to Mackay." But if they don't it should be reworded somehow.

You seem to be doing good work all over the place. Keep it up!

Smallbones (talk) 14:47, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

I go away for a couple of days and the article goes through FA! It was good working with you. I'm probably pushing it, but is there a way to get it on the main page? I looked at the requested date page and it seems focused on the date (maybe Feb. 5, next year?), or if I requested now, I counted 4 points. In any case, congrats on your work. Smallbones (talk) 03:29, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Ryan

I've opened a section to address the David Levy problem on the page. For some unspoken reason, he's got an issue with Magic Johnson being included in a list of HIV/AIDS advocates and I saw that you'd addressed it a couple times, as have I. Now he's reworded the sentence to omit Johnson, based on the rationale of focusing it on White's lifetime. I find that approach a disengenuous attempt to remove Johnson from the article, and totally invalid, considering that the Ray brothers and Kimberly Bergalis died some time after Ryan White, and their activism was a bridge between White and Johnson. I'm perfectly willing to continue addressing this (in my perception a bias). Let me know, or respond at Talk:Ryan White#White, Magic Johnson, HIV and AIDS. Thanks. Wildhartlivie (talk) 08:20, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

Well done, that article rocks bells. — Realist2 21:11, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
PLEASE don't take what was being debated to be about you. I brought up the issue because I didn't feel like he handled it correctly. I honestly didn't see that he was berating you!! I have tried, futilely, to explain that I saw the sentence as being an either/or declaration (these people either had AIDS or are HIV infected). I honestly saw it as his trying to minimize any emphasis on Magic Johnson. But he really isn't dissing you about this, he's saying that once he restated his position, you understood what he was saying. He even tended to - sort of - defend you. My whole issue with it was that outside of the edit summaries, there wasn't any dialogue about it. And now, there isn't the possibility of it. But it really really really isn't dissing you!! I'm sorry this has caused such an uproar. Rightly or wrongly, I tend to expect a lot more dialogue from an adminstrator in situations like that. Again, I'm sorry. If you have a spare moment, could you look at Mathematical economics? I'm pushing for a GA review but I realized last week that both the application and history section didn't really read like I felt it should. The topic is interesting to me because it is so inchoate--mathematical economics means different things to different people and I wanted to show the history of 20th century neoclassical modeling, but that also makes it difficult to write. I would appreciate any comments, however critical. Another editor, Dank55, has devoted a considerable amount of effort to cleaning up my mistakes and the more help the better. a mere measure assures a ruse—in Tulip Mania I pimp a plan

JayHenry, at FAC I've introduced a quantitative FAC measure, DenseSight™, that is sure to please both the footnote-loathers and the footnote-lathered. I chose your Tulip Mania featured article as representative of a reasonable level of citation, then calculated the measure, and rounded it up a bit to arrive at the DenseSight™ benchmark: 0.40, which should never be exceeded by an article. (The units are "citations per 17-sentence", but I don't expect that they be explicitly stated when referring to the measure.) I encourage you to encourage the insertion of this measure into the FAC rules proper, and then no one will ever again be able to argue qualitatively about citation: what an efficiency improvement. Later, we can make a JavaScript to calculate DenseSight™ automatically. I expect others will be quick to come up with the DenseSight™ FAC minimum; this is left as a project for the reader. Now I've got to go write DenseSight. Cheers, your old friend in isolated places, Whiskeydog (talk) 04:40, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

Tulip mania

So I checked out Economisch-historisch jaarboek (1929), and wouldn't you know the whole thing is in Dutch! What am I supposed to do with that? :) Either way, the meat of is is about 12 pages preceeding two reprinted pamphlets. Those pamphlets are available in full from the tulip portal so I will probably just scan the 12 pages and hang on to them. It seems to me that his analysis in the jaarboek is similar to the article (which is pretty extensive in the Journal of Economic and Business History. I suspect that a lot is duplicated in between.

As for Thompson, I think his argument goes something like this: tulip producers saw (in late fall) a real rise in demand followed by a sudden demand shock (The flaring up of the 30 yrs war in the area of their likely customers). As a result, they wrote contracts which incented the buyer to accept at any price greater than the default fee (the futures to options conversion). Sellers had every incentive to issue these contracts, but buyers were perhaps unwise under some circumstances to assent to them (this is kind of funny to read in Thompson, he refutes the "bubble theory" then partially recapitulates it in the buyer motivation bit, see section 7). The market fundamental price of the tulips (without the added element of the contract change) reached close to zero very quickly in October. Prices, however, didn't return to the Earth until trading was suspended. that suspension of trading--first a partial suspension in Feb. and then later a more complete suspension. And, of course, the price level that the markets returned to was that which would have generated the peak pricing with an option contract--the very cool part of Thompson's paper.

This is a pretty believable story but (after rereading Thompson and Posthumus, I still need to read Garber) I don't see the evidence supporting it. Thompson shows evidence of contractual changes over the winter. He shows compelling but circumstantial evidence of the exact changes he describes (Ap. II). the odd thing is that I don't see a discussion of earlier contract changes (as I noted on the Tulip Mani talk page) and I don't see a discussion of closing markets in response to rising prices in Posthumus. Off to do more reading, I guess. Protonk (talk) 04:08, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

African Politics

I see that you've favoured African politics and that you've studied international organizations. Say, have you ever noticed how Morocco is only African state not in the African Union? They left the OAU, the AU's predecessor, in 1984 because it allowed Western Sahara to join in 1982 even after Morocco attempted to acquire the additional southern third that Mauritania tried to control from 1975 to 1979. Even now, Western Sahara is on Wikipedia:Peer_review/United_Nations_list_of_Non-Self-Governing_Territories/archive1 , a page I'd like you to review. Have fun! :)--Thecurran (talk) 14:52, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

This is largely unrelated, but I looked at the Gazimoff RfA and noted your reference to The Random Editor - did you know he actually deleted the main page twice, under different names? Avruch T 20:18, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Now that I go to look for it, I can't turn up evidence for it either. I haven't looked into it since December (you can see that on the Eye of the Mind talkpage, my comment is the last), but at the time I was convinced that Eye of the Mind's deletion of the main page was a strange redux of TRE's earlier taking the same action. I thought then that it was a mixture of stress and dismay over Giggy's ER review that led to both the deletion and his retirement. It could be my memory is faulty though, because I can't seem to track down the history to back it up. I'm sure there were discussions about it in other places in December that led me to that conclusion, but it would probably take all day to find it! Avruch T 21:43, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

WikiProject Novels Roll Call

WikiProject Novels is currently holding a roll call, which we hope to have annually. Your username is listed on the members list, but we are unsure as to which editors are still active within the project. If you still consider yourself an active WP:Novels editor, please add your name back to the Active Members list. Also feel free to join any of our task forces and take a look at the project's Job Centre to get involved!

Next month we will begin the coordinator election selection process. We hope to have more involvement and input this time around! More news will be forthcoming. Thanks, everyone! María (habla conmigo) 16:26, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

DYK Rules

this - If the rule goes into effect, I wont be able to produce any complete articles for DYK.

That means that a lot of novels, authors, poems, etc, will never make it to the main page. I don't work on obscure topics. I work on highly notable pages. You can see that User:Ottava_Rima/DYK. They all reuse content of some kind, and not all limit it to 20%. Notice those "background" sections. Its impossible to put together a complete background without going over the same territory. Panic of 1907

Great job on the Panic article. I also read the Bruner and Carr book and wanted to add a lot of the info from there, but haven't had the time. I may come behind you with a few additions, but keep up the good work. I'm a former JPM analyst and have visited his library, hence the interest.--Robertknyc (talk) 19:16, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Jay, I was hired at JPM in 1994 a little after the book came out, but didn't get a copy...perhaps that's a newer policy. I have the book now and haven't quite finished it but have read the sections on Pierpont. As for the Dow data, I have it through my quote service. I could send you a file of the raw data if you're good at making charts out of it. Otherwise, I could try myself though I'm not sure of how it looks. The chart I use has a copyright attached to it and probably wouldn't be allowed.

--Robertknyc (talk) 01:25, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

On the Dow chart, yes, I guess I'd just use the weekly closing price instead of the way you have it. You also need to note on the chart that it's the Dow Industrials, and then "weekly close" assuming you go with that. Also, you need to divide the price scale by 10. CQG data do not have a decimal point, so in reality the Dow in 1907 peaked at 103, not 1030. The time frame you chose looks good. Finally, I think I'd go with a white background instead of black, and use a dark color for the prices. If you only have the option of a black background, then use a white or yellow line for price. Thanks for doing it. --Robertknyc (talk) 03:57, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Most people in technical analysis are used to either a line chart of closing prices, or a bar chart with OHLC. Having all three superimposed in different colors is a very non-standard format, so while it would be nice to have the total range for the week I think all the different colors are a little unusual. Does Excel have a chart wizard that can make bar charts? If you're not familiar with Excel I guess I can take a look, though I'm a novice with it. --Robertknyc (talk) 04:51, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Well, you already know more about Excel than I do, so I'll defer to you on that. I think I like the tighter time frame on the first chart to highlight more closely the 1907 period. Obviously we can edit the posted chart at any time, and perhaps someone with some good charting software will show up who can create a bar chart.

--Robertknyc (talk) 04:51, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

So you're going to stick with the OHLC? I noticed one more thing, can you tighten the y-axis scale, say from 350-400 instead of 0 on the bottom, and 1100 on the high side instead of 1200? That would blow up the data a bit more so it would be easier to see. --Robertknyc (talk) 05:06, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Sounds good, I say post it. --Robertknyc (talk) 05:22, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

The caption is fine, though the y-axis is still 0-1200 and you still need to divide the data by 10. --Robertknyc (talk) 05:36, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Ah, yes, looks good...I kept seeing the older version all this time. Have a good night. --Robertknyc (talk) 05:50, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

FWIW, I requested Tulip Mania for Sept. 30 for "Today's Featured Article." I count 4 points, no real date applicability, but with the current financial crisis there is a "current" connection. 2 supports and no opposes so far, but we'll see how it goes. I'd guess that the nominator makes 3 supports, but that other article editors wouldn't really add to the totals.

Let's hope for luck.

Tulip mania a go go

Jay,

They finally put Tulip mania up on the schedule for tommorrow (almost today). With today's (yesterday's) vote on the bailout plan and -777 on the DJIA, it looks like it's gone up on probably the most interesting day possible!

I've read Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2008-06-09/Dispatches on how to monitor changes during the day. We'll see what happens. Frankly, I expect that there might be some problems with people calling today(y) a crash of unprecedented proportions, the sky is falling, and saying the article has an ostrich-like POV. Not to get too defensive, but I worked a lot on an article that became known as January 2008 stock market volatility trying to convince people that the world had not ended on Martin Luther King's birthday. (See the 1st day's edits, the article then was known as Black Monday (2008)).

Well, it could be interesting.

Yes (in reply to earlier random comment I just noticed on my talk page), it's always fun to see how long a fair-use image stays on a talk page. Automation--we'd be cavemen slavemen without it. Now, more to the point of me stopping by, it's clear you have no interest in letting anyone add trivia to edit the panic of 1907 [1], so you're getting close to going back on The List. Whiskeydog (talk) 06:25, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

JayHenry, you get around more than me - is this where we're going with referencing now? This is the scariest thing I've seen in article space yet, and it actually confirms my personal reductio ad absurdum of the sensibility here, in which this site will no longer be an encyclopedia per se, but rather it will consist of sets of clauses marked up in wiki-code that indicate what source they've been paraphrased from. This horrible prognostication of mine is the formalization of an "article" (a human, written thing) into an "object" (a computer programming entity having defined attributes and behaviors). We're going to end up with "articles" that are really "database records", aren't we? Is anyone going to stop this? I don't go around saying I'm smart, but am I really the only one who can conceptualize any of this and see why there's a problem? Or have the rest just left wikipedia, or never joined? It's a worry, and I'm not doing the rhetorical glib routine here (except for the rhetorical questions, of course, at the end!) Whiskeydog (talk) 09:17, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

This redlinked username hurts my soul. --JayHenry (t) 05:20, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

This may be not be the right reference for you but...

wat? Facepalm. This is what happens when you have people with social welfare functions that have a 2-6 year horizon determining long run fiscal policy. Let's make a 700 billion dollar spending bill which was obviously going to be financed by borrowing and attach tax cuts to it, which will cause other spending to be financed by borrowing. On top of that, let's make those tax cuts temporary so that the change in the consumption function is ~0. Awesome. Protonk (talk) 18:22, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks

thumb|Unfortunately, this is a "fair use" image Yeah, CSD may not be the best place - but the question is where is anyplace that would deal with this? The Jan.21st article was a nightmare (and linked to the news section on the main page). Editors would write "Al Jezeera said it was a crash" or "OK, it didn't crash more today, but let's wait until tomorrow," and "If you don't like the article, go for an AFD" which of course would take a week. Just check out talk:January 2008 stock market volatility.

I'll write a proposed guideline, if anybody can tell me where it fits. I don't think I could write a template however. Maybe a big purple box saying "Wikipedia cannot offer investment advice, nor can it predict the direction of the stock market. If you are interpreting this article as saying that a stock market crash is ongoing and that you should panic, either you or the article is terribly wrong." Maybe include a picture from the cover of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I'm done - enough venting for today. BTW, I left you a message on Protonk's talk page about "salt and matches." Inability to disengage?

Well, the RFA is going down in flames, which I kind of expected, but your stated reason surprised me. What makes you feel that I can't disengage? Aside from maintaining some of the redirects as stable, I don't participate in fiction much any more. I debate things on the various RFCs and guidelines, and got involved a bit when I saw some of the recent AFDs turning into anti-TTN rallies, but I don't wade into that mess anymore. I feel pretty disengaged.—Kww(talk) 13:56, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

To argue that Phil Sandifer and I don't get along well isn't completely untrue. We get along better than that particular exchange would indicate. We even had an interesting debate as to whether his proposed changes to WP:N would actually make me notable (scroll down a bit).
As for Bulbasaur, it was the edit war during January, when people undid the redirect to the list of Pokemon, and started screaming that Bulbasaur was more notable than other Pokemon that soured me, and was the source of the quoted comment. Point of fact, it isn't. There are still no third-party sources in that article that directly discuss Bulbasaur (with the exception of one joke about pesto) ... it's all Nintendo licensed material. A small group of editors decided that they didn't have to follow the same guidelines as everyone else, and that they could have an article on their favorite topic simply because they wanted one. All I asked then, and now, is that someone demonstrate the existence of a few independent, third-party sources that examine Bulbasaur directly and in detail. Until such sources can be produced, there shouldn't be an article. And yes, I have a very low opinion of editors that say I don't care what WP:N says, I'm going to keep undoing the redirect on this article and you can't stop me, or pile on to AFDs about the article falsely claiming that it meets WP:N when in fact, it does not.—Kww(talk) 16:47, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

I just wanted to let you know that I understand that your opposition was in good faith, and thank for your comments on how unreasonable the forest fire became in response to your single match.

I'm going to try to interpret this resounding defeat as a statement that I should choose my words more carefully in the future, and remember that every statement I make gets recorded forever, just waiting to get carefully transcribed onto my next RFA. I would go insane if I believed that it was repudiation of what I truly meant: that no editor should consciously and willfully ignore guidelines and policies, and editors that repeatedly do so should not be rewarded for or supported in doing so.

I'm sure I'll get back to full speed editing soon, because, after all, , every day, and in every way, I am getting better and better.—Kww(talk) 05:39, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Marlow

Hey, Jay! Life is busy-good, I'm enjoying it. How about yourself? I see you've been busy, what with timely economic articles and such. Funny you ask, because one of my favorite papers I wrote in undergrad was about Marlow and his view on women. Here are some sources from a precursory search (some are available via NetLibrary and/or Googlebooks):

  • Billy, Ted. "Heart of Darkness (1899)". A Joseph Conrad Companion. Westport, Conn. : Greenwood Press, 1999.
  • Bloom, Harold. Marlow: Major Literary Characters. New York: Chelsea House Publishers, 1992.
  • Bock, Martin. Joseph Conrad and Psychological Medicine. Lubbock: Texas Tech University Press, 2002.
  • Schwarz, Daniel R. Rereading Conrad. Columbia University of Missouri Press, 2001.
  • Simmons, Allan. "The Marlow Trilogy: Youth, Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim". Joseph Conrad. Houndmills, Basingstoke, Hampshire ; New York : Palgrave Macmillan, 2006.

That's as far as I got, but there's quite a few biographies on Conrad that just love to talk about his alter ego. These are ones I was able to peek at and seemed to have some great insight into the character, and not just the connection with Conrad himself. Hope this helps! Let me know if you need more. Any reasonable person would throw this up on main page, with pleasure, given the current economic climate. Its a great and accessable article; we should maximise it potential. Without wanting to be glib, nobody really gives a fuck about the daffodile market, but they care about this stuff. Ceoil sláinte 15:34, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
I think we should call in Whiskeydog. Ceoil sláinte 15:47, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

To J—H——

While the market may have fallen
yet another ten percent,
your Panic of Oh-Seven
has become the main event.

Would that prose could pay down debt,
and add liquidity!—
Could prop up falling prices
and recharge the S&P.

Were this the case, I'd send you off
post-haste to rake the muck;
but false prophets print reports
at length and pray at night to Luck.

Though be the wallet far from swelling,
some tall tales are ripe for telling;
what is missing ain't the selling,
it's The Panic of Oh-Eight.

Whiskeydog (talk)

Right. I'd nom at WP:TFAR on the sole basis that the article is very closely related to a major global event, and on that alone. By November 4th, god knows what will have happened. By the way I love the way the Whiskeydog account provides a nice handly link to its talk page, but if you post there, they will get an admin to just delete it; woosh and your gone ;).Ceoil sláinte 20:52, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Long-Term Capital Management. Get hot. Protonk (talk) 00:15, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Saw your message on User talk:Protonk re being pessimistic: "If a paragraph explanation of short selling still comes across as an abstract area of finance I'm definitely worry about explaining fixed income arbitrage, Over-the-counter derivative/swap trading, etc. to the FAC crowd."
The key is to have a bunch of explanatory sub articles to wikilink to. I worked on several Indian architecture articles using architectural terms in languages like Kannada, Tamil etc. FAC cried out "explain what that means!", so I wrote little sub articles just big enough to explain each term. A little bit easier there, as I could find pictures from India of temple features to illustrate. But still, the time has come for people to understand finance. Even Tony at FAC was surprisingly mild, once he got over his initial flip out over the word "antitrust" in your article (which he say "even Americans" probably didn't understand).
FAC's first reaction was "oh, its American, so I'm not expected to know about it". But I think your article gave them pause to consider maybe this is something they really should have a grasp of.
I tried to do little articles on "bear squeeze" and "rich man's panic" but couldn't find references quickly enough for your FAC. I hope you consider doing some of these articles you are talking about. I would even get some books and attempt to understand finance in order to help out. I even took a photo before I cooked them....

Autumn 2007 was huge here, but 2008 was not so crash hot, but it is funny, if we have a warm-hot spring and lots of rain, it tricks lots of the northern hemisphere introduced species like Lactarius deliciosus and Suillus luteus into fruiting under the pine plantations in spring. otherwise we wait till easter. I find both these ok-ish, but much prefer Pleurotus eryngii, which are hitting the markets big-time here (yum), and there are always dried morels and porcini (also yum), I had dried Boletus badius the other day which was milder than procini but nice in a different way, and Wood Blewits are being cultivated here and sold, now they are yummy...No-one really eats native Oz species as almost all are of unknown edibility. Summer here will mean a few boleti and amanitas may pop up after rain, none that I would be game to eat of course. For the record JayHenry's Attorney (talk · contribs) is not me, nor is it an authorized legal agent under the employ of (I, the undersigned) Jay Henry . I have made many enemies over the years, and it's no surprise that one of them would register an account designed to get me in trouble, and then come along and make useful copy edits to an article I was just working on. My default position--which I take against any and all mischief, baffoonery, and diablerie--remains to endorse community ban against this and all ne'er-do-wells. --JayHenry (talk) 14:55, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

JayHenry, hello. I understood that you would consult with me before the attempt to drive User:Ceoil from Wikipedia was initiated. (This was of course why I signed up for a Wikipedia account, at your suggestion. Your editing tips came in handy at the Featured Article you showed me with some pride at the office. Well done, I suppose.) In law, we have a saying: What is done cannot be undone (que proventii n'etre pas reparii, in Latin, I suppose, ha ha). Please note that regardless of my firm's role in the proceedings, the stipulated rate will apply. Removing the enemies list, which we agreed was prudent, was to be completed by my administrative assistant. Please note that her standard rate will apply. If you will require further service from Drexell Burnam Lamberdt, please contact me (try the talk page, I suppose, if you're feeling brave, ha ha). I have enjoyed working with you. Sincerely, JayHenry's Attorney (talk) 04:37, 19 October 2008 (UTC)

Postscript: the text generic which you were to employ--"Oh no! He and I were just ____ around! I wasn't serious when I gave him the ____. He's not _____ me at all. Please ____ him!"--remains the intellectual property of my organization, though I must say, it was put to particularly good use here. ;-) (I believe the kids use punctuation to indicate emotion online nowadays--better that they indicate it while they still have some, I suppose.) Hi, I am reviewing your article, Panic of 1907, for GA. I have read it through and think that it is a wonderful, fascinating article. I saw a few very minor prose issues which I will list on the review page tomorrow, although with anything else that I pick up on. Regards, —Mattisse (Talk) 23:39, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

I have added comments to the review page and will add more after you respond. Regards, —Mattisse (Talk) 23:27, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Some clarification

Hi Jay. Some clarifications for you. Firstly, I've apologised to Ceoil. Secondly, I do think you have misread the diffs. [3] Incorrect. I suggested running for arbcom with a Ha Ha Ha comment [4]. Ceoil replied with another Ha ha Ha comment. [5] This is the point that you seem to think I've misunderstood. Not at all, hence my more serious reply as to why I'm here and why I wouldn't, in reality, run for arbcom [6]. The very next edit Ceoil launches an unprovoked bashing begining "oh for fucks sake" [7]. That is what I took great umbarge to. Yes, making comments implying Ceoil is more trouble than he is worth was out of line and I've obviouly retracted it. But please don't start bashing me over a misunderstanding when you yourself have misunderstood what made me so angry. I felt that I'd given Ceoil support only to have it thrown back in my face. His next comment on my talk [8]given his use of the exact same word (cheap) has now been explained as an apology. Given the context it is not difficult to see why it did not look like one. As I said to Ceoil, this whole mess would not have happened if we'd all being in a room rather than typing on a website. I'm not defending my very poor comment about him being more trouble thatn he's worth, but equally you have to understand that my POV was that I'd offered support and then in three edits things had gone from a collegial conversation to a tirade against me for no reason whatsoever. Disgusting bullying by admins is alive and well on this site sadly - but it's not all a one way street. Pedro :  Chat  09:55, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Probably not worth arguing with him. He tried to start an out-of-process Featured Article Review to have the Holloway article stripped of its FA status, and this is a continuation of that effort. —Kww(talk) 02:03, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I'll probably join in on LTCM. I think I've already gotten through with "When Genius Failed" but will have to review it. The list on the talk page looks good. Though I think Lowenstein is usually very good, his book (if I remember correctly) pushes the "perfect storm theory" - that they knew what they were doing, but, well, a one in a million chance came along and blew it for them. I never trust the perfect storm analogy. We'll see what happens. As far as the "I can't edit..." - well I can't even read some of the current econ situation articles - where to start? who is going to be offended? etc. They are probably better than I remember, but..

We'll see what happens. Smallbones (talk) 13:12, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, the image will probably have to go. It's a shame that our fair use policy (probably) doesn't allow this, but I thought I'd see. No reason to hold up the article for a "I hope it works." I will get to work on LTCM, I promise. Sorry I missed Panic of 1907 and I really just noticed the FA and TFA. Congrats. Will LTCM make a complete trilogy, or are you guys going to make a career of panics, crashes, etc? I just found my "Genius" and will be reviewing it - my previous ideas on it look false. Hope to join in tomorrow!

JayHenry You have been one of the outstanding editors.Really there are few who as good as you.A very active editor and quality of it is mindbogging. It is editors like you.Who are the pillars of Wikipedia.Last month We had six promotions and now just 2 RFA are going on.Would you mind me nominating you for admin.Let me put it straight I consider you several times a better editor than me it would be a honour for me to do so .Through I had never had personal interaction with you.You can tell me no if you want too.Pharaoh of the Wizards (talk) 14:48, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Don't do it Jay! There are costs as well as benefits to being an admin. There's a reason they call it "the mop." The benefits, as far as I can see, are just the esteem of your colleagues. You've got that in any case. Seriously (even though the above arguement is also serious), I'd support and many others would too. Smallbones (talk) 04:03, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

dudefish...

Thanks for the anti party pooper comments in Gadsby. I read somewhere that instead of dropping citation needed tags, just take a second to Google and drop a citation. I think some of the ball buster wiki lawyer types are pretty annoying, when the only joy they get is messing up some project they don't even care about.

Also, I noticed, you write some about finance. So please check out my article on Burn Rate (book). TCO (talk) 11:30, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

Everybody's cool! I keep telling myself to stop bothering you, but I always worry for your country on election night. No Canadian election has made me weep, but I believe one or more recent American ones have. You might be shocked to find that I'm worried... about the soundness of your election system, the seeming underestimation of McCain's campaign. My little prediction is that McCain will do much better than we're being led to expect. All you have to do is stop blue-skying and think about all the undertows in your country, its politics, and its people. I will be very impressed for you when Obama wins, and I hope you take part in the revolution if he doesn't. Best regards, Whiskeydog (talk) 00:01, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
