Ways to improve Addington School[edit]

Hi, I'm Garagepunk66. MurielMary, thanks for creating Addington School!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. Needs additional sources and content.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse. Garagepunk66 (talk) 01:06, 25 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm gadfium, a New Zealand administrator on Wikipedia. Thanks for the work that you're doing; you are a very promising new editor! If you need any assistance, feel free to ask on my talk page (or asking at the New Zealand Wikipedians noticeboard as you did is good too).

Just a note: articles on primary schools are sometimes deleted from Wikipedia because such schools might lack suitable notability. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Common outcomes#Schools. I don't intend to nominate the article for deletion myself, but someone else might. If the article was deleted, the content would be merged to the article on the suburb, so your efforts would not be wasted.-gadfium 03:02, 25 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Garagepunk and gadfium, is this the right way to reply to your posts?? Thanks for the messages and information, very useful. I will add some more information on the historical significance of Addington School next week which will probably make it more comfortably "notable". MurielMary

Yes, people who post on your talk page usually also add it to their watchlist and will see replies. If you want to be absolutely sure that someone sees your reply, you can add {{ping|username}} which appears as @Gadfium: and causes a notification to appear on the named editor's screen next time they load any page on Wikipedia.-gadfium 22:11, 25 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Juliet Valpy[edit]

Hi, I posted a comment on your new article's talk page. The source does not mention Juliet, do you have an additional source? Thank you for your contribution! Lantay77 (talk) 07:46, 25 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lantay77, apologies, I'm new to this and I'm not sure if this is how I respond to your question - please correct me or redirect me if needed. I'm confused by your question as the source on Juliet Valpy's page, of the Ajax shipping list, names her as a passenger along with her parents and siblings. Thanks, MurielMary

Welcome[edit]

Saw your post asking for help. If there is anything I can do for you, please feel free to contact me and I'll try. We have a very active group over at WikiProject Women and tons of red links for articles that need to be created here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Women/Women in Red#Tasks. We just finished an editathon on women in architecture and are planning more at our idea cafe. You are more than welcome to not only create articles but add to the lists of articles for creation. Welcome aboard. SusunW (talk) 16:30, 26 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, SusunW, that sounds great!! I will look at adding a "New Zealand" section to the "missing by nationality" list. I am also thinking about organising an edit-a-thon for NZ women, so I'll have a look at the pages for the architecture and other edit-a-thons and see if that is something I can do. Cheers! MurielMary (talk) 18:24, 26 October 2015 (UTC)MurielMary[reply]

Yay! Megalibrarygirl would love the help with lists. Double Yay! A person in Oceania will help a lot. We have found we all get different search engines. So what I find in Mexico, or Rosie finds in California, or Ian finds in Denmark, or Sue finds in Texas will be different. We get a more rounded picture of the diversity of our world by spreading our wings. :) SusunW (talk) 15:10, 27 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be happy to help with a list. They are super calming for me to work on. ;) You're adding New Zealand to this list, right? Megalibrarygirl (talk) 15:14, 27 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I presume you're talking about Draft:New Zealand women's organisations. I'd be happy to help. And The Rambling Man is an expert at working on Wikipedia lists, especially how to get them to "Featured" quality and from there to Wikipedia's Main Page. He's also very helpful. --Dweller (talk) 15:31, 27 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

So good to see a new editor welcomed! Dweller we are making lists of redlinks for article creation and then sponsoring virtual editathons to get them created. I think you are talking about blue link lists (which we try to make during/after the event) to tie them all together. SusunW (talk) 15:55, 27 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Your comments re Main Page[edit]

Our systemic bias toward male, western hemisphere, English-speaking world issues is awful, but natural.

In all seriousness, the best thing you can do to help address it is encourage your female friends to edit!

Anyway, a belated welcome from me. --Dweller (talk) 13:32, 27 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the welcome, Dweller! I don't agree that male bias is natural, and I think there's more to be done to change it than simply add content *but* I appreciate your welcome and encouragement all the same. It was nice of you to take the time to post here for me. Cheers!! MurielMary (talk) 07:08, 28 October 2015 (UTC)MurielMary[reply]
What I mean is that on whole, people tend to edit here, a volunteer project, on topics that interest them. Now, I'm sure there are lots of men with interest in inherently "female" topics but they'll be in the minority. Personally, I mostly edit on football, cricket, medieval history. Now, you could find me helping out on an article about, I dunno, Florence Nightingale, because someone asked me to, but I'd soon gravitate back to my natural inclinations.
To give an example, I recently declined a [rather abrupt] request to help with Romanian football because I don't know anything about it and am not interested enough to look into it - and that's a subset of a topic I *am* interested in. (The manner of the request didn't help!)
Still, I love your optimism. If you're ever working on a Featured Article candidate article, please do drop me a line and I'll try to help get it to pass. --Dweller (talk) 09:46, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A cup of tea for you![edit]

Hi Mary, I saw your comments on Talk:Main Page and wanted to welcome you to Wikipedia. :) You may want to check out WikiProject Women in Red, a project to write more biographies about women. I focus on women scientists, so if you want to write about some women scientists from New Zealand, give me a poke and I'd love to collaborate. Again, welcome, and thanks for participating. It's good to see new women joining and wanting to help close the content gap! All the best, Keilana (talk) 16:05, 27 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Keilana, and thanks for the welcome, so nice of you to take the time to post here for me! Hmm women scientists .... my favourite NZ woman scientist is Beatrice Tinsley and I think her article is quite well developed. But actually there's a new woman scientist here who works on making science interesting and accessible to young girls, her name is Michelle Dickinson (her nickname is Nanogirl!!) There's no article about her here yet. What are the guidelines for writing about living people, are there any special requirements to meet? MurielMary (talk) 07:11, 28 October 2015 (UTC)MurielMary[reply]
Yes, see WP:BLP. We are more strict on requiring sources for articles on living people, and much more strict about sources for any controversial material. I think there are sufficient reliable sources for an article on Nanogirl or Michelle Dickinson (one can redirect to the other).-gadfium 07:56, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I created a draft at Draft:Michelle Dickinson. It has pretty much everything except the body text. Shout if you need anything else. Stuartyeates (talk) 09:27, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Wow you're fast! Cheers! MurielMary (talk) 09:46, 28 October 2015 (UTC)MurielMary[reply]
Hey, Keilana, do you want to work on Nanogirl's article together?? :-) MurielMary (talk) 18:15, 28 October 2015 (UTC)MurielMary[reply]
If you want to catch Keilana's attention, I'd use @Keilana:. Experienced wikipedians are likely to have tens of thousands of articles on their WP:Watchlist and not notice every individual change on every page. The {{ping|Keilana}} template will raise an explicit alert for Keilana. Stuartyeates (talk) 18:27, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Stuartyeates: that's a useful tip! @Keilana: re the Nanogirl article started on Stuart (see above) MurielMary (talk) 19:28, 28 October 2015 (UTC)MurielMary[reply]
Hi everyone! I'm happy to help out with the Nanogirl article! :) Keilana (talk) 21:09, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Great, this will be my first collaboration and I'm sure I'll learn a lot! So I'll make a start in the next few days, writing body text from Stuart's references. :-) @Keilana: MurielMary (talk) 21:52, 28 October 2015 (UTC)MurielMary[reply]
Collaborations are my favorite thing about Wikipedia! After my pile of exams tomorrow I'll come home and work on the article with a cup of tea and my cat. Sound good? Keilana (talk) 22:44, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hey shout-out to @Ambrosia10: and @Keilana: and @StuartYeates:, I have done some more writing on the Draft:Michelle Dickinson ... of course it's a work in progress but might be ready to publish? MurielMary (talk) 09:46, 7 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Re your additions on Tony Veitch. The large paragraph on recent developments may have over egged things. There is a phenomenon called WP:Recentism where very recent things tend to get much more indepth coverage because they're current and there are many sources everywhere. For biographies of living people balance is very important. The most common way to solve this is to improve the coverage of the subjects' back-story and historical career to keep the new content in balance or remove blow-by-blow accounts of recent events. Also the word 'backlash' is emotive and best avoided (unless used in the source). Stuartyeates (talk) 08:27, 29 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that advice @Stuartyeates:, much appreciated. I did wonder as I wrote it whether it would be queried! I've made some changes. MurielMary (talk) 08:55, 29 October 2015 (UTC)MurielMary[reply]

Help me![edit]

Please help me with adding an infobox for a person when the birth and death date are only known in years. All the examples I've seen of infoboxes show a D/M/Y format for the birth and death but for my article Agnes Busby I only have years. I've tried to just put in the year but I get a red error in the infobox so I must be doing something wrong. Thanks!

MurielMary (talk) 15:33, 31 October 2015 (UTC)MurielMary[reply]

You don't have to use templates like {{birth date and age}} in infoboxes. As you will see on the Busby page, I've simply added the years to the birth date and death date parameters. Primefac (talk) 15:36, 31 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Great, that makes it much easier! Thanks! MurielMary (talk) 15:42, 31 October 2015 (UTC)MurielMary[reply]
MurielMary another really helpful thing is |df=y right before the ending }} it makes the date appear with the day first as opposed to the month first. I find it weird that the infobox default is month first since the majority of the world does not use that format. SusunW (talk) 15:55, 31 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
SusunW Thanks for that!! MurielMary (talk) 16:12, 31 October 2015 (UTC)MurielMary[reply]
I see that you're affixing your name (possibly) with the signature. It's enough if you insert the signature by typing ~~~~. Vensatry (Talk) 16:36, 31 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Introducing Myself[edit]

Hi MurielMary I'm an editor form Wellington who also has been keen to raise the profile of New Zealand women scientists and women scientists in general. I have been gradually chipping away at my own personal "to do" list. I just thought I'd introduce myself to you. I've attended several Wikipedia edit-a-thons both physically and virtually, so if you do decide to organise one I'd be happy to participate. I'm also happy to try to help with any queries, although I'm by no means an expert! Ambrosia10 (talk) 04:32, 1 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Kia ora Ambrosia10 thanks so much for leaving me a note, nice to hear from you! Stuartyeates has started a draft on Michelle Dickinson (I think the link is above here on another conversation?) if you fancy working on that alongside me and Keilana :-) You know, if your own "to do" list is getting short! I'll definitely take you up on the offer of advice, general and on edit-a-thons, I think Christchurch is keen and ready to have one. Cheers! MurielMary (talk) 05:34, 1 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, just thought I'd pop in and say what an excellent start you've made to Wikipedia. Hope you stay, haha.

Hi there, thanks for that welcome! MurielMary (talk) 18:57, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Can you explain what you were trying to achieve with this edit ? Te Puea Herangi was certainly a New Zealand woman and should probably be in that category. Stuartyeates (talk) 19:07, 8 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Category: New Zealand women is labeled as a "container" category which shouldn't have any actual pages in it. MurielMary (talk) 19:10, 8 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You are correct, it shouldn't. The best way to deal with articles in a container category (if they meet the criteria) is to move the article from a category into a subcategory (or subcategories). Commonly the article goes into a sub-subcategory or sub-sub-subcategory rather that a direct subcategory. Not unusually the category needs to be created. Looking at Te Puea Herangi, I'm thinking Category:New Zealand women in politics. I'm also undecided about creating a Category:New Zealand Māori women as a subcat of Category:New Zealand Māori people (and also adding Georgina te Heuheu, Metiria Turei, Donna Awatere Huata, Ocean Mercier, Linda Tuhiwai Smith, Mamari Stephens, Carmen Rupe, Miriama Kamo, Erenora Puketapu-Hetet, [[Diggeress Te Kanawa], etc). You're welcome to have a crack at creating such a category, or I'll create it in a couple of days (if I forget, feel free to remind me). Stuartyeates (talk) 19:32, 8 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still unconvinced on the value of creating gender-based categories. For example, Category:New Zealand women in politics has 157 pages in it but Category:New Zealand politicians only has 97. Isn't that suggesting that we have "politicians" and then we have "women politicians"?? When actually we should just have "politicians" and the "women politicians" should be a subset of that group, not a separate group. I think the way the Category:New Zealand doctors and Category:New Zealand women doctors are set up seems to be the preferable way. The women doctors are a subset of the doctors as a whole, not a group alongside. In fact, what I would most like to see is Category:New Zealand doctors with two subcats, Category:New Zealand male doctors and Category:New Zealand female doctors cos if we're distinguishing by gender we should distinguish both genders, not just one of them. (Were you planning on a subcat Category:New Zealand Māori men to go alongside Category:New Zealand Māori women?? MurielMary (talk) 10:09, 9 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
There are a couple of different points here (a) I'm not going to try and convince you of their value. If you don't believe they're valuable, you're welcome to ignore them entirely (actively removing them will get you in trouble eventually). (b) Counting the size of categories fails because of the nature of subcategories (this is a symptom of the fact that en.wiki categories are not mathematical sets), but I assure you that we have more male doctors and politicians than female ones. (c) You're not alone in thinking there should be a Category:New Zealand Māori men to go alongside Category:New Zealand Māori women, but there is an established consensus that we're not doing that on en.wiki (I believe that de.wiki does). Establishing that consensus was a very ugly process and not one I'll be revisiting willingly. Stuartyeates (talk) 20:10, 9 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, interesting! I'm actually genuinely interested in the arguments *for* gender based categories, so I'd be curious to know more about this. BTW, is there an easy automated way to add the category "NZ politician" to all the pages in "NZ women in politics"?? MurielMary (talk) 22:17, 9 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
(a) I'm a fan of gender (+other minority) based categories (provided they're a strict duplication of the non-minority categories) because they allow people to browse interesting groups of (usually) positive role models. Since I largely rationalise my wiki addiction as an effort to pave the internet in positive role models for my two young children, this is a compelling argument for me. (b) I believe that tool you are looking for is Wikipedia:HotCat, which is how I edit categories. Stuartyeates (talk) 00:01, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for taking the time to reply, I'll look into HotCat, many thanks, and ponder on the categorization issues! MurielMary (talk) 00:15, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It's not your fault, because it's not-obvious, but Sonja Davies doesn't need to be in Category:New Zealand politicians because she's already in Category:Members of the New Zealand House of Representatives which is a subcat (actually a sub-sub-sub-sub cat) of Category:New Zealand politicians. Stuartyeates (talk) 08:59, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Aaagh oh dear she won't be the only one I've put there tonight who shouldn't be there, then! I'll go back and double check. Thanks for noticing and letting me know. MurielMary (talk) 09:07, 10 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I have just created Category:New Zealand Māori women. It'll take me a while to populate it. Stuartyeates (talk) 08:44, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Don't mind me for butting in, was just flying by to see how you are getting along. Seems like you're enjoying editing. Yay! From the standpoint of data, the women's categories help us a lot. There has been a lot of press saying that Wiki's numbers are not representative of the world's diversity and based on a study (there are links over at WikiProject Women and WikiProject Women in Red, only 15% of the biographies on Wikipedia are about women. There may actually be more, due to category underlabeling or WikiProject underassigning (depending on from where the data is being pulled), but even accounting for errors, that's a pretty big gap. From the standpoint of data collection, we are trying to address both the lack of articles on women and provide better means to gather data. Other projects address the disparity of women editors, but WikiProject Women in Red, doesn't think it matters who writes the articles as long as they get written and as long as our data collection processes improve. SusunW (talk) 14:17, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi SusunW thanks for stopping by, nice of you to do that! And thanks for the comment on categorisation, good to hear that background. MurielMary (talk) 18:59, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Stuart, thanks for that helpful hint! I had seen that list but I found it quite awkward to toggle through the pages to see everything I've been working on; I prefer having everything visible on one page. Cheers though! MurielMary (talk) 09:42, 15 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

ITN (and especially re: Ko wins LPGA Player of the Year Award, youngest ever winner)[edit]

Hi there, and a belated welcome both to the encyclopedia, and to that most arcane of its subdivisions, In the News! Enthusiastic new contributors are always a boon there, but I fear the atmosphere can sometimes feel anything but welcoming. It is really hard to get any item that isn't listed under recurring events through the regulars. I've been there on and off for years and never managed more than a couple of RDs! It has accreted hundreds of unwritten rules about what is and isn't allowed, which would be counterproductive to formalise, and thus fossilise. Don't feel discouraged. Hang around a bit, keep offering opinions, and perhaps try your hand at a few recent death nominations from your country -- though as you will have noticed many get rejected, sometimes for no clear reason beyond no one liked them. The best way of getting an event or obituary included is always to work at the article as quickly as is feasible, always bearing in mind that reliable sources are a must for anything that goes on the main page.

It's great to see someone working on articles about women. Keep up the good work & good luck! Cheers, Espresso Addict (talk) 08:26, 24 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Espresso Addict, thanks so much for taking the time to stop by here and leave me a message! I am finding ITN absolutely fascinating, the discussions there and the characters and the attitudes that come out are completely different to what I am used to dealing with IRL. Thanks also for the advice, very sound; I had just figured out that it seems best to get an article updated *before* making a nomination as the minute a nom is up, it gets pounced on!! Thanks again for your message. Cheers, MurielMary (talk) 08:36, 24 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Please edit if you know the subject[edit]

Clearly with no prior knowledge of the woman, you have changed Bonnie Lou's entry to delete "Bonnie" in many cases and treat "Lou" as her last name. Her performing name was "Bonnie Lou," and her last name was Okum. Lou was never her last name and while researching I found no instance in life when she was referred to as "Lou" in hundreds of articles over decades. The AP made an error in her obituary referring to her as "Lou" as if it were her last name. Because AP made the mistake doesn't mean it should be institutionalized on Wikipedia. You need to know the subject to make appropriate edits, though it clearly states her actual name and the performing name at the outset. Nicmart (talk) 14:31, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Lest you get the idea to refer to as "Okum" throughout the article, she was virtually unknown in public by her last name. Millions of Americans know and knew her only by her performing name, Bonne Lou, and that's how she should be appropriately identified in this entry. The New York Times got it right in its obituary. Nicmart (talk) 15:09, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
As the entry clearly states, Bonnie Lou's legal name was always "Mary Joan." The discussion about her early years refers to her by the name she used at the time -- her given name -- and the context is obvious to readers. She wasn't known then as "Bonnie Lou." The rest of the article refers to by her well-known performing name, and there is no reason to think this will confuse readers or that it needed to be changed. Please provide some evidence that the WP style book would treat a a single performing name, "Bonnie Lou" as if it were a first and last name when it was not. Nicmart (talk) 14:48, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
In respect to childhood name context, I refer you to the entry for Bob Dylan, which says, "Robert Zimmerman lived in Duluth until age six, when his father had polio and the family returned to his mother's home town Hibbing where the family spent the rest of his childhood." The context in both cases is clear to readers. The situation between the two is different in that Zimmerman adopted "Dylan" as a last name, but Bonnie Lou used no last name as a performer. Tracy Curtis Taylor[edit]

You clearly have an agenda to disguise the misinformation regarding this pilot who claims to have flown from the UK to Sydney alone. She has throughout the entire journey been co piloting with her partner and aircraft owner Ewald Gritsch. As a long distance solo pilot myself and a former aviation journalist I am determined to correct this PR execise that has exploited the achievements of Amy Johnson. Sadly Curtist Taylors media exploits will come home to rob other female pilots of their achievements. She has claimed a previous 'solo' flight from Cape Town in which of 44 legs she flew four solo. Jaysata (talk) 17:37, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The only agenda is to keep WP free of accusations and unsubstantiated information. You need to adhere to the policies stated on the talk page of the article around edit-warring and editing biographies of living people. When you have reliable published sources of disputes/disagreements then feel free to edit the article with those citations. MurielMary (talk) 17:45, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I would also bring your attention to the WP policy on personal attacks [[1]] - an accusation about personal behaviour which lacks evidence is considered a personal attack and isn't permitted here. MurielMary (talk) 18:01, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Help me![edit]

Please help me with edit-warring on the page Tracey Curtis-Taylor. Another user is repeatedly adding unsubstantiated information and refuses to desist, given the note he/she posted on my talk page. I have requested help for this matter at the Biographies noticeboard and am waiting on a response. Is there anything else that can be done? Thanks!

MurielMary (talk) 17:49, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Seems resolved; the edit-warring has stopped, with an agreement on the talk page to wait for better sources to clarify the issue in dispute. If it weren't resolved, WP:ANEW is a good venue to report edit-warring. Getting more community input - for example by leaving a comment at a relevant noticeboard or a WikiProject talk page, or by pursuing dispute resolution - might also have helped. First, congrats + thanks on getting the murder of Berta Cáceres posted as a news item. But second, in case you haven't noticed, I've also pointed out for the record that your altblurb came from me, not Irn. It was a perfectly understandable mistake that anyone could easily make, and it doesn't worry me, and in any case Bongwarrior's better altblurb2 got used. But I don't know whether or not it embarassed Irn. At any rate, I just thought you should know. Third, also thanks for your clarification regarding your Louise Rennison RD nom. This date seems to be seriously in question. The current citation gives it as 1959 (although the article says 1960) while The Independent obit gives 1961. It should be added as a footnote that the year is in doubt.... The Rambling Man (talk) 11:28, 17 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Vivid details of a subject's life and not usually put in the intro, as they are unimportant in the scope of one's entire life. Perhaps you want it there because it's topical, but in won't be in say three years and articles in Wiki are supposed to be timeless. I pulled up John Wayne as an example and his death is not listed in the intro. Please reconsider your intransigence.

"Women are everywhere"[edit]

Hi MurielMary. I'm an editor of the Italian Wikipedia. I'm trying to participate to an IEG with the project "Women are everywhere". You will find the draft at this link https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/Women_are_everywhere It would be great if you could have a look at it. I need any kind of suggestion or advice to improve it. Support or endorsement would be fantastic. Many thanks,--Kenzia (talk) 17:57, 3 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your support MurielMary. You will find the detail of transportation and accomodation you required on the draft page of the project https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/Women_are_everywhere If you need other details, I'll try to answer to your questions. About the methodology I will use, you will find it in the "project plan" section. If you need more details, I'm ready to answer to your questions. A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Statue of Harriet Tubman (Salisbury, Maryland) is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Statue of Harriet Tubman (Salisbury, Maryland) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. HappyValleyEditor (talk) 10:12, 23 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello![edit]

Hello! I agree with the idea of making a page that collates all the Tubman memorials, but appreantly that's against the rules. The other editors are going to tell you on the deletion page as well that including her based on the decades/centuries old incorrect reporting of history is not a criteria on Wikipdia. I actually agree with what you are saying and with the current policy. You're entirely correct about history, however if righting history was part of the criteria here, what would happen is we would not be righting history-- we'd be writing history. And with a group of anonymous randomly qualified editors deciidng what is historically correct, that could turn out messy! So we have to rely on sources. That said, I like where you are coming from politically, and would be happy to help make things fit into the Wiki according to policy. Drop me a line on my talk page if you need help with anything in that regard! I know they will shoot down the "sculptures of Harriet Taubman", but I don't see why really. If there can be lists of stadiums (stadia?) then why not memorials? ALso, her being on the $20 US bill is getting a lot of play, so consciousness is changing as we speak. Have a nice day!HappyValleyEditor (talk) 23:22, 24 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Template:DNZB[edit]

Hi MurielMary, I suggest that you would make your editing of WP a bit quicker if you used Template:DNZB instead of creating references to the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography manually. Last night, you added a number of alumnae to Christchurch Girls' High School and frequently backed the additions with references that pointed to the DNZB. It'll be quicker to copy and paste the following line and then fill in the four parameters:

<ref>{{DNZB|last|first|id|title|19 April 2024}}</ref>

The parameters are:

  • last: last name of author
  • first: first name of author
  • id: the id number in the URL of the DNZB entry
  • title: the title of the DNZB entry

In case the author of the particular DNZB entry has an article on Wikipedia, it'll be five parameters:

<ref>{{DNZB|last|first|id|title|19 April 2024||authorlink}}</ref>

Easy? I think so! The full documentation is at Template:DNZB/doc. Schwede66 01:21, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Christchurch Women's Writing Party[edit]

Just a short note to say I hope the edit-a-thon in Christchurch goes well. Just added some thoughts to wikipedia noticeboard.

FYI Wikipedia:WikiProject New Zealand has a section on Wikipedia:WikiProject_New_Zealand#Pages_needing_work listing Dame Patsy Reddy (next NZ Gov General) and suggesting improvements to Women's Suffrage in NZ article. There was an Art & Feminism Meetup in Auckland in March. The meetup page lists some women's pages listed there that needed editing. Linnah (talk) 20:52, 23 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Linnah: thanks for your message! Sunday is my first WP event so I'm excited to see how it goes! And thanks for the link to the Auckland event page, there were lots of useful resources there that I hadn't seen before. Cheers! MurielMary (talk) 08:22, 25 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. I had a look at the Art & Feminism Meetup in Auckland in March. It appears to be part of a global event Wikipedia:Meetup/ArtAndFeminism. Christchurch meetups[edit]

Hi,

It is awesome you are adding to content on women in Wikipedia as well as encouraging female wikipedians to contribute.

There's a geonotice facility for Wikipedia meetups. It will notify wikipedians in Christchurch about the meetup. However this isn't gender specific so both genders will be notified. Just another way of getting the word out there.
  • Getting word out about the edit-a-thon
In the 29 May edit-a-thon you had a web page for sign up etc. Are you planning to have the same thing this time or will the meetup page for the edit-a-thon be you rmain page? I am asking because I'd like to help get the word out about this edit-a-thon.
  • List of pages worked on
Noticed the Wellington edit-a-thon's post event edits, have you considered using a hashtag for your next edit-a-thon? Hashtag isn't necessary. Just ask people who participated to edit the event page and list the page(s) they worked on in a section of that page. It will help you identify what's been accomplished after the edit-a-thon. I noticed it was done in a few other edit-a-thon's pages. For example Art & Feminism Meetup in Auckland. Perhaps it gives people attending an idea that what has been accomplished and may be what you need in future to when asking for use of facilities. I think some places/organisations may be willing to contribute to the effort if they can see past record. This may (in the long term) perhaps enable you to apply for grants for facilities. Just a thought.
  • Possible tidy up
I would like to edit and tidy up the Christchurch meetup page to achive the following:
 * A main Christchurch meetup page where you (and others organising christchurch meetups) can create sub pages off.
 * Enable you to ask people interested in Christchurch meetups to watch the main Christchurch meetup page.
 This will result in
 * Moving the Christchuch meetup on 29 May to a sub page and making that page the main page.
 * Possibly moving the June Christchuch meetup page too. I won't do this if it messes things up -ie if you have already linked to this page we won't move it. Doing the change to the 29 May means you can ask people who attend the June meetup to watch the main Christchurch meetup page.
There's no real need to mess around with these except it does allow people to watch one page so they are notified of changes (which for a meetup page may mean a new meetup has been listed). This is a note asking permission to do so. We can work with the pages without reorganising. Linnah (talk) 07:23, 7 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Linnah, thanks so much for taking the time to look at this! I wasn't really sure about whether each monthly meet-up should have its own page or whether they should all be on the same page, so I'm very happy for you to re-organise as you see fit. Also I realised after the May event that I hadn't gotten the new editors there to sign up on the meetup page, as you say, this would be a good record of attendance and support for later funding/support applications. I also didn't keep a full record of pages produced or edited during the event. Hopefully those editors will attend a later event and I can get them to go back and add their details to the 29 May page/subpage. And as for a sign up page, yes the June event is on eventbrite again here [2] Thanks again, MurielMary (talk) 07:46, 7 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
HI. @MurielMary: Suggest you create a section on the meetup page for "Pages done" and ask people participating in your edit-a-thon to add a link to the pages they changed and their username to that list. That looks like what was done for Wellington. After the event he went through and tidied up the section to divide it into sections like pages created, updated etc. Look at the Wellington edit-a-thon history and compare the version on 29 May around 4pm with current version.
I've added your event to the June 2016 meetup list. So this means it will show up in the list of meetups. Linnah (talk) 13:29, 18 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Facebook crap[edit]

I saw your GGTF post about the ugly exchanges on the Wikipedia Facebook page. I've commented on it and I'm hoping that the page admin will take note. Pretty much every reply to Heather's remark there is either logical contortions or childish abuse. It's downright shameful, so thanks for pointing it out.

Just the other day, I commented on the archaic, fanciful presentation of the article about Pier Gerlofs Donia. Whoever is writing those presentations doesn't seem to treat history as a particularly serious topic. I'm not really that surprised that this has resulted in an archaism like "known to man".

Digital Anthropology research[edit]

Hello MurielMary, My name is Stephanie Barker and I am a student at the University of Colorado Boulder. I am currently enrolled in a Digital Anthropology class, which attempts to answer how the digital world affects culture and how culture affects the digital world. For my final project I am doing an ethnography on women Wikipedia users and as a member of the WikiProject Women page I was hoping I could ask you some questions about your experiences editing Wikipedia pages. 1. Have you ever been locked into an intense editing war? If yes, please explain the situation to me. 2. How did you become interested in editing Wikipedia pages and did you have any initial fears/hesitations when you started editing pages? 3. Have you ever been a victim of a mass deletion or other vandalism on Wikipedia? If yes, please explain the situation to me. 4. How would you describe your gender? 5. Is there anything else you would like to share with me about your experiences as a Wikipedia editor? Thank you for taking the time to read this email. I would like you to know that I am only sharing my research with my professor and the other students in my class. Apologies[edit]

Hi there. I am posting at your talk page to say sorry for what I said at this RD discussion, which has since been archived. I did eventually address the reason for your oppose and I did ping you, but I should have done that earlier instead of arguing and I really shouldn't have compared the work I did on one article with the work you did on another article. That was completely unnecessary. I hope you will accept my apology as one thing this has made me realise is the need for more people to participate and help out at ITN/C and if I can find the time, I hope to help out more. Can I quickly ask if you got the ping I made here and whether you would have switched to supporting like you did later in the day for another RD here? I don't suppose it would have made much difference, as the Ahmed Zewail discussion would have been archived by the bot anyway, but as I said elsewhere, the bot removing the discussion before it had reached a conclusion is very impersonal and it would help me to know whether you would have changed your oppose and whether the discussion would have been closed as ready or not. Thanks. Carcharoth (talk) 08:08, 10 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Carcharoth thanks for the note. No worries. I did get the ping, thanks for that, and would have changed my oppose to a support if I'd been able to do it in time. However time differences and real life do get in the way sometimes! As I said on the ITN/nominations page, the 7 day archiving aims to keep the "recent deaths" and "in the news" discussions fresh, new and relevant. It's not in keeping with the aim of the ITN/RD sections to have "old"/"stale" deaths or events on the main page. It's not usual though for a nom to still be under discussion when it gets archived. Usually an admin has checked the oldest noms and closed them well before the bot archiving happens. It was unusual to have editors still working on an article 6.5 days after the nomination - usually the work has been done (or not) and a decision to close or post has been made at least 1 or 2 days before the 7-day expiry. BTW, did you look at the "page view stats" on the Ahmed Zewail article? It had 65,000 views over 2/3 August, without even being featured on the main page, so the article has certainly had plenty of interest and exposure regardless of whether it was on the MP or not. Anyway, I hope you continue to work on biographies and make some noms at ITN/RD as it's always interesting to see different types of people featured on the MP. MurielMary (talk) 08:38, 10 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I do have some thoughts on page views (if an article is still getting lots of page views, maybe that means it is still in the news?). Compare the ones currently on RD with Zewail - the peaks and rate of decline of views is interesting! I'll try and follow up this weekend. Carcharoth (talk) 08:21, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Burnside High School is lack of your pictures[edit]

Burnside cabbage tree at night

Hi there! I'm writing an article about Burnside High School in russian. Could you help me, please? Specifically, I'm looking for a picture of symbolic Burnside High School's cabbage tree spot. Would you like to take a shot and upload it to Commons, please? I'll appreciate your help! Thanks! --Voyagerim (talk) 13:05, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi Voyagerim, sure, I live in Christchurch but not in the same area as Burnside High School. The next time I am nearby I will take the photo and upload it for you. Regards, MurielMary (talk) 01:16, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Same applies to me. I have to say that I don't know about their cabbage trees, but I do recall that they have a pretty mature stand out somewhere in front of their school. Can you provide a link where I can read up on it? Schwede66 06:14, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • The good news is that I took some photos yesterday. The bad news is that it was after dark. See what you think; look in the Commons category. Schwede66 05:08, 18 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yay!! Finally we got this!! Schwede66, you've made my day! Thank you, sir!! --Voyagerim (talk) 08:11, 18 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for September 10[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Sylvia Gore, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Knowsley. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Article suggestion[edit]

Hi MurielMary, as you like writing about women artists, here's a potential candidate for you. Lugnuts created an Olympic stub bio the other day for swimmer Len Moorhouse, and I was curious whether he was a descendant of William Sefton Moorhouse. Whilst I haven't found the answer to my initial question yet, what I did find is that his wife (Peg Moorhouse) is still alive (at least she was earlier this year), and that she appears to meet notability criteria. Wait for this — Len Moorhouse competed in the 1928 Summer Olympics and his wife is still alive! Wow. Schwede66 05:56, 13 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I always like seeing a little stub I start get expanded with info that I couldn't even begin to believe existed! Nice work Schwede66. Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 06:43, 13 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The Len Moorhouse article looks pretty good by now. MurielMary, have you had a look as to whether you'd like to add Peg Moorhouse to your to do list? I just ask because if you decline the invitation, I'll stick her onto my list. We could, of course, collaborate. Whatever you like. Schwede66 05:08, 18 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Schwede66 apologies for the slow reply! What a fascinating find! Thanks so much for the idea - do go ahead and get started on an article, I am quite taken up with the Women in Red Nursing edit-a-thon all of September so won't get to it for some time I think. Cheers! MurielMary (talk) 17:51, 18 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Harriet Simpson[edit]

The article Harriet Simpson has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Subject of article does not appear to meet notability criteria.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Helmut von Moltke (talk)

Thanks on Delia Davin[edit]

Thanks for your quick work on Delia Davin. I was drafting an article, but I'm very glad that you seized the day. It was important to have the article up when more people will probably look for it. Please feel free to edit what I added, though I might add even a little more. I knew her only through her publications and through email exchanges, but she was clearly someone whose WP article should somehow represent both her heft as a scholar and her personality. Cheers. ch (talk) 16:28, 19 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi CWH thanks for your message. I was browsing the Guardian obits and came across Delia's story; I was hooked when I read that her parents were NZers (I'm from NZ) and then even more intrigued by her life story! It was great to come back later and see all the expansion you had done with your scholarly knowledge. And really great to have the article featured on the main page now (under RDs). MurielMary (talk) 06:40, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the NZ (and Irish) connection was important to Davin. You might also want to touch up the Elisabeth Croll article and add it to your list, if you haven't already. Come to think, you or somebody might do a category of NZ China Hands. Offhand, there's Rewi Alley, of course, but also James Bertram, William L. Holland, Patrick Dewes Hanan, and George Hogg. Cheers again! ch (talk) 17:26, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
A few minutes later: I went ahead and added CATEGORY:China–New Zealand relations to their articles. Not an entirely appropriate category, but it will serve the purpose until something better comes along. ch (talk) 17:38, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Tracey Curtis-Taylor[edit]

Hi MurielMary. Just to let you know, I've finally bitten the bullet and nominated the Curtis-Taylor article for deletion: link

I hope you understand why I felt it necessary, and that it is not a comment on your fine work, both in creating the article and defending it from sustained attack. Thanks. --Hillbillyholiday talk 20:59, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't add tabloid-sourced material to a BLP. The policy is at WP:BLPSOURCES. --John (talk) 09:50, 29 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks John for the heads-up - here in NZ we don't have tabloid press so I wasn't even aware of that issue and policy!! Much appreciated. MurielMary (talk) 20:44, 29 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you![edit]

The Original Barnstar
Thanks for linking to my rather sparse page on the NZ Army Nursing Service! I was moved to write it after seeing the Gallipoli exhibition at Te Papa. Like you I like writing about women on Wikipedia and I've done a few biographies of early women doctors in Scotland. Love your work - very impressive! Ammienoot (talk) 14:24, 31 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Well thank you very much, how lovely!! Yes I do spend a lot of (far too much!!) time writing about women here, it's a bit of a passion of mine. I love the editathons which Women in Red organise, with a different theme each month. In September the theme was women in nursing, so I wrote a lot of nurses' articles then. Thanks for dropping me the note and my very first WP barnstar!! MurielMary (talk) 07:19, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

FYI![edit]

Hello MurielMary,

By the way, if you're interested in Clara Peeters, and of women painters in general, you should check out this documentary: [3]. In fact, at the 41th minute, the narrator talks about Clara Peeters and the very painting you nominated at FP. Happy editing! Étienne Dolet (talk) 08:41, 14 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wow how cool, thanks so much for stopping by and giving me that link - I will make time to watch it! I know very little about art and paintings to be honest, I just enjoy finding and sharing amazing work by women! Love the images you nominated at FP, and look forward to seeing them on the main page in due course! 09:21, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

New Challenge for Oceania and Australia[edit]

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. The Australia challenge would feed into the wider region one and potentially New Zealand could have a smaller challenge too. The main goal is content improvement, tackling stale old stubs and important content and improving sourcing/making more consistent but new articles are also welcome if sourced. I understand that this is a big goal for regular editors, especially being summertime where you are, but if you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Oceania and Australia like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1700 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for the region but fuelled by a series of contests to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. The Africa contest scaled worldwide would naturally provide great benefits to Oceania countries, particularly Australia and attract new editors. I would like some support from existing editors here to get the Challenges off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile and potentially bring about hundreds of improvements in a few weeks through a contest! Cheers.♦ --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:12, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Fisher lead[edit]

I'm not going to war on this, but honestly, there are huge sections of her article (e.g. mental health) which aren't touched upon by the lead. The whole point of the lead is to summarise the salient points of the article. It doesn't even mention in the lead her heritage. The Rambling Man (talk) 22:32, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
