List of stations on the MBTA subway

I have been working on the List of stations on the MBTA subway over the past few days. I kind of used List of London Underground stations as a jumping off point, since that is a featured list. I have most of the current information i could find already in the article but i am not very good with formating, especially references. If anyone could go take a look and fix or help out with anything they can it would be great.

City (?) status of Palmer

Per [1], Palmer is one of those municipalities that is known as a town but is legally a city because of its form of government (which is town council-town manager). I may need some help convincing User:Nyttend that Palmer has city status even though it calls itself as a town. Disputed pages are {{Hampden County, Massachusetts}} and Palmer, Massachusetts. I would have to concur that these disputed pages are, in fact, in error. According to the Massachusetts Official Homepage (linking over to Palmer), Palmer is, indeed, a TOWN. There are 11 municipalities that are called towns but have city forms of government. See for example West Springfield. The determination was to classify municipalities by their legal standing rather than their official name. Palmer changed its form of government in 2004 but is currently exploring another charter change. Palmer currently does not have a town meeting form of government. If you prefer to use the official name, that would entail a change to 10 other articles that are cities but known as towns, in addition to Palmer. --Polaron | Talk 03:40, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Science Park

I have a question about what we should consider the official name of the Science Park MBTA station. the current page it is located at is Science Park/West End (MBTA station). They MBTA just recently added "West End" to the signs at the station, but they have also stated that "West End" will not be added to mbta maps or to other documents. Should this page be named Science Park/West End (MBTA station) or just Science Park (MBTA station)? I personal feel the later is still the stations true name. I agree. The Boston Globe article linked from Science Park/West End (MBTA station) says it's "a symbolic local change that will only be visible" on signs at the station. It sounds like a compromise gesture that the MBTA reached with the neighborhood association and not a reflection on the official name of the station. Tim Pierce (talk) 22:14, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

The State Seal Is Wrong!

hello, I've been trying to get some help with this for a while.. anyway: The state seal .svg file File:Seal_of_the_State_of_Massachusetts.svg Has a misspelling in it. It should read "Reipublicae" instead it reads "republicae". The correct seal is shown here: http://www.sec.state.ma.us/cis/cismaf/mf1a.htm

Can someone fix this? I don't have the skills and the original creator is not answering me.

Have you tried asking the Image workshop for help? I'm guessing they'll be able to fix it. As there is already a .png version with the REI- spelling (here), this is probably just a matter of converting the image from one format to the other. AlexiusHoratius 00:05, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Towns with city forms of government

See Talk:Braintree, Massachusetts. There is an argument of whether to call Braintree a city or a town. It is one of the 11 municipalities with a city form of government that calls itself a town. Currently, the convention on Wikipedia is to call these entities as cities, and is reflected in various templates and lists. Additional comments are at the Braintree talk pae are welcome. List of Massachusetts State Parks

I have begun working on this series of articles using the featured List of Pennsylvania State Parks as a model. If anyone would like to help out, you can pick nearly any state park article you want, because those that exist are stubs and most aren't even stubs. Any help or advice would be nice. If enough people are interested, perhaps a sub project could be started. This would make a swell summer project folks! get out there and take some pictures. GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. Update U.S. Senators

I noticed that several articles for municipalities in Massachusetts haven't been updated to note that John Kerry is now the senior Senator and Paul Kirk is the junior Senator. I'm correcting some, but it would be good to have a concerted effort to change all of these now and then again after the election. --JamesAM (talk) 15:41, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

    • Admittedly, I varied my wording a bit depending on what the existing wording was. I've updated some of the towns from Bristol County and Dukes County, so maybe a preferred wording could be selected from one of the those changes I made.       • I thought about modifying the template into county templates for many of the city and towns to help with the very problem discussed (see Worcester County cities and towns), but thought it actually may make the problem worse. If many of the cities and towns have not updated their information in a month for Kennedy, then there may be lower offices, with more more obscure officeholders be slow to be updated as well. At least more people may recognize that Ted Kennedy as passed, then say, the Bristol or Middlesex County Sheriff, for example. We may be compounding the problem, not lessening it? Thoughts? There's a Thomas Eakins painting on display in the Brockton Musuem of Art in Brockton, MA. The painting is the Portrait of Walter Copeland Bryant. See List of works by Thomas Eakins, #372.

Couple final questions re: Massachusetts GA nom

Hi - lately I've been doing some work in trying to get Massachusetts up to a GA; it's coming together - all that is really needed now is an expanded intro, rewritten and referenced Geography section, and a climate section - but I have a few questions that I'd like someone with more experience with the place than I have to take a look at.

  • First, I need someone to basically read through the Arts and Culture section and make sure nothing is really off - as in if an event mentioned no longer takes place or if something is missing but really should be mentioned that isn't currently mentioned. You don't have to do any major work here, (of course, you can if you want) but basically I would just like a local to have a look.
  • Second, I'd like to mention a few current local political issues - in other words, not something like "taxes" or something. For instance, at the end of the politics section for South Dakota, I made a quick mention of a few issues such as video lottery that are sort of important locally though perhaps not nationally.
  • Third, I still need to write a climate section - this is just going to be a general thing showing general climate info and stats and stuff - just a few paragraphs (Again, South Dakota is a good example of what I'll be trying to do).

As for severe weather, I was going to mention (with references, if I can find them) that tornadoes are rare but do occur once in a while, hurricanes occur but not so much as Florida or Louisiana, and also mention Nor'easters.

I found a good reference for some of this, but it would be a big help if someone could bring to my attention specific hurricanes or other events that need to be mentioned (I don't really want to trawl through 'List of Hurricanes'...) One looks good, but I know that there is the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra and one in Springfield. For number two, you could talk about the corruption that has occured recently in the state, that of Dianne Wilkerson. I also know that Lowell virtually worships the late Paul Tsongas, so I don't know if that is worth mentioning since I know Barnstable didn't worship both Kennedys and Kirk. The weather section could be tied into that of the rest of New England. We haven't had a hurricane since Bob in 1991, so we're really overdue. Sometimes I know it goes subzero on the Cape and the last time this happened around six years ago, they closed schools. You could mention the Worcester tornado of 1953 as that killed many people and was the last true one in the state. I mean there have been others, but they are usually F1 or F2. The Worcester one was officially an F4 but I know some people are trying to lobby to get it changed to F5 as it was so destructive. You could also talk about the spring floods that have occured in the state. This past March we had two major floods in the Boston area around two weeks apart. I know that when the second one happened, areas around Boston were flipping out while the people on the Connecticut River valley were just mentioning it. One interesting tidbit, since Lowell has the Merrimack dammed, when they get a flood, there is one gate that prevents the destruction of the city shown here. If you want more pictures User:CSZero has a site or two that he created that are a wealth of knowledge. There was also the ice storm that occured in December of 2008 and that caused a bunch of damage to areas north of Spencer and as far east as Lowell. It was also destructive because nothing melted for a long time. Additionally, there was a time when the jet stream quite literally fell out of the sky over the cape in December 2005. This link is a pretty accurate representation of what happened. I remember that day that they were predicting a warm rain storm. It then got windy and much colder out and snow started to fall. Basically a blizzard occured with less than an inch of snow present and many trees were taken down on the eastern side of the Cape. After writting all that, I realized that I am a heavy geek and I guess I should get a life. If you have any other questions, I am more than happy to help. Thanks a lot - I've just added a bit about the other two orchestras (I was worried the whole time about making the article too Boston-centric, so those help). I'll work on the climate stuff over the next few days - I guess I overestimated the hurricane thing a bit - I was under the impression it was like one minor one a year and a major one a decade or something, but looking at List of hurricanes in New England, it looks like the ones that do get there are mostly just rain and a bit of wind by that time. I'll probably focus more on the flooding and winter storms and things like that, perhaps also mention the Worcester tornado you were talking about. AlexiusHoratius 22:09, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
You might include the great New England hurricane of 1938, still recalled by older people. Massachusetts Literary map from Massachusetts Center for the Book

The Massachusetts Center for the Book has an online (and print) map with information about various locations around the state which are related to books, authors, poets, etc. This could be useful for Massachusetts' literary-related articles, especially those with little existing information. Proposed rename of Plymouth and Cambridge

There is a current proposal at Talk:Plymouth and Talk:Cambridge to rename the articles (which are about the UK cities) and replace the pages with a disambiguation page. In both proposals, the Massachusetts cities are some of the most viewed from the disambiguation page. The proposal has already been flagged for attention by the automobile wikiproject and as a result a number of comments proposing the car is just as important as the UK city and keeping the article represents a UK bias (the Massachusetts cities are also of relative importance; making Plymouth and Cambridge disambiguation pages would ease access to them). US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Guys, there is so much work to be done on coverage of Massachusetts that I would hope that we can avoid the distraction of Kumioko's well-meaning efforts to restart the WikiProject United States. Adding "Popular pages" to U.S.-related projects

A very interesting tool of the Wikimedia Toolserver is called WikiProject Popular pages lists. These lists are similar to project-related article lists like U. S. article lists used for generating assessment statistics. The Popular pages lists include the rank, total views, average daily views, quality and importance ratings for the listed articles. Here is the full list of projects using popular pages lists. An FAQ also is available at User:Mr.Z-man/Popular pages FAQ.

I recently added links to lists of popular pages as shown below to the U.S. Portal - WikiProjects box and the nominations sections for each of the selected articles boxes.

Because this project was not included, I am bringing up the popular pages tool here. This tool makes it very easy to track three of four balancing dimensions when selecting articles for showcasing at a portal - quality, importance and popularity. When tracking the fourth dimension, topic, the related article lists tool (such as for U.S. article lists tool) also might be useful by filtering on categories of interest.

County navigational boxes

Templates in Category:Massachusetts county navigational boxes have dark blue title bars, on which the blue article links are unreadable, and clearly in breach of WCAG (web content accessibility guidelines). My recent attempt to fix this on {{Worcester County, Massachusetts}} were reverted with the edit summary "Back to standard format)". If that's a standard (I can't find it documented anywhere), it's a bad one, and needs to be replaced with something more accessible. Historical population counts added for all 351 Massachusetts municipalities

I figured it would make sense to note here that I just completed adding historical population count tables to each Massachusetts city and town article. In the vast majority of cases, the tables contain previously-absent population counts for each decade for the given municipality from 1850 through 2010, or from the decade following if the municipality was incorporated after 1850. In some cases, the decennial population counts are given from 1790. The tables are in the 'Demographics' section of each article. I've included references for the sources of the data in each decennial US census, and to the relevant Population Estimates Program source for annual population estimates from 2001 through 2009.

To my knowledge these tables are the only systematic, fully digitized and free collection of decennial population counts for Massachusetts's 351 municipalities currently available. I transcribed these records from scanned PDF copies of census records; so if anyone happens to notice an error, please let me know. Hopefully this data will come in handy for our readers, and perhaps folks interested in the state's historical population trends! Emw (talk) 04:29, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

Proposal to add WikiProject Massachusetts under WikiProject United States

Greetings, I am a member of WikiProject United States, it was recently suggested that WikiProject Massachusetts might be inactive or semi active and it might be beneficial to include a project for it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States, which Kumioko have added some of the projects like WikiProject American television and WikiProject United States Government. After reviewing the project it appears that there have not been any active discussion on the talk page in some time and the only content updates appear to be simple maintenance so being supported by a larger project might be beneficial. This discussion is intended to start the process of determining if the project members are interested in the project being added to the projects supported by WikiProject United States. This project doesn't seem to be very active on the main page or this talk page. I think that maybe adding it to the supported projects list of WikiProjec United States might be beneficial. Does anyone have any comments about doing this? Discussion to remove the Automatically assessed logic from the WikiProject United States template

Greetings, there is a discussion regarding removal of the logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories from Template:WikiProject United States. Most of the categories (over 220 Wikipedia wide) were deleted in February 2013 because they were empty. These categories were previously populated by a bot that hasn't run since 2011 and the categories aren't used. Removal of this uneeded/unused logic will greatly reduce the size and complexity of the WikiProject United States template. Any comments or questions are encouraged here. Lest there is any confusion for people who don't speak the same language, the words "logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories" refer to the feature that was supposed to allow this WikiProject's template to "inherit" class and importance ratings from other WikiProjects. Neighborhoods in Boston article

Hello! I updated the Neighborhoods in Boston article to reflect the City of Boston's new neighborhood designations, but I'm not familiar enough with the sub-neighborhoods in "List of places and squares within neighborhood areas" to properly split Allston-Brighton and Dorchester & Mid Dorchester. I moved a few sub-neighborhoods from Dorchester to Mid Dorchester based on the City website's description, but can someone else check if any of the neighborhoods listed under Dorchester belong under Mid Dorchester? Leaflet For Wikiproject Massachusetts At Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

It's more because the scope would either be so small (just things that pertain to the region), or things that include all of the region and all of the projects within it. I have pondered setting it up before, but I have not really known if there would be support for doing so. That being said, if you think there is a way to drum up support, let me know, and I would be happy to devote some time to creating it. The only problem is, we'd have to figure out the scope first, so we could then tag the articles accordingly.
In terms of the user group being set up there, having us independent of the site is partly designed to allow for us to someday reach nonprofit status and fund events if we so choose. There are some thematic organizations (WikiProject Med being one of them) that exist, but we have generally found it easier to move off of the site and use that as an official line of communication (much as the Meta page before it), as it is easier to coordinate that way.
Sorry for the long response, but I figured I would help answer any questions that you might have, as I do agree that it is bothersome to have another site to check, and we are currently trying to figure out a way to consolidate everything so that people aren't running all over to find something. Thanks for the explanation. Appears to be a small group of editors, unlikely to grow much. Not at all clear to me, the group will have much effect. But it's your time, and if a small group wants to meet and have a website, that's fine. Though consider carefully, if continuing the group will lead to a net gain in WP editing quality and quantity. The time spent on the group could instead go to editing.
I already find enough WP events local to Boston. I have yet to go to one, as I don't have a laptop and they generally focus on editing. — Lentower (talk) 22:23, 24 July 2014 (UTC)
No worries, as we are looking to start incorporating into a chapter by the end of next year. There is currently a survey going out right now that is seeking to gather more input of people in the area, so let me know if you would like to take it and I can send you the link. In terms of the events part, I am actually looking into doing more events that don't involve a laptop or computer connection for that matter, since I completely understand where you're coming from there. However, I would like to counter your assertion that we aren't likely to grow much, as there are multiple editors in the area, but we have mainly been organizing in the Boston area because that is where we are. Since organizing into a more coherent group over a year ago, we have had many events when compared to the previous fiscal year, and are looking to expand further in the coming year.
