Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Cyrillic)

Hi everyone. These guidelines still have a "proposed" sticker on the head, but they appear to be in use across all the Cyrillic languages:

Is there any debate about any of the language sections? Does it reflect correctly and completely this WikiProject? If there's a language where there isn't agreement, then shouldn't an "under discussion" sticker be on the individual language and we can work to remove the the "proposal" header above all of them? Image for Olena Chekan

There's a newish article Olena Chekan, and I see that the Ukrainian article has an image, Файл:Чекан Олена Василівна.jpg . [1] (sorry, link doesn't work though I copied and pasted it!) Could someone look at the Ukrainian-language copyright info and see whether it can be copied to Commons or English Wikipedia so we can use it in the English article? Thanks. The file can not be copied on Commons since it is just a random file found on Internet with creator and time of creation unknown, and if we count it as anonimous even then it is not PD until 2083. Since the actress is dead, I think it should be possible to copy the file to en.wp and provide some convincing fair use rationale.--Ymblanter (talk) 12:06, 1 January 2016 (UTC)

Demyanyuk or Dem'yanyuk ?

No, that's not it. Romanization of Ukrainian in Wikipedia follows the WP:UKR guidelines, which recommend using either the BGN/PCGN romanization system or the Ukrainian National System to transliterate proper names. The latter omits the apostrophe altogether, and the former uses "”", which in practice is often omitted from the transliteration as well. Expand Userbox Section

Could we get our Userbox section to include a table with userbox names, as opposed to just having all userboxes thrown there? An example of this can be seen on the Armenian wikiproject. Could we also get a small sub-heading close to that one to request new Ukraine-related userboxes? I know i had some to request, particularily regarding recognizing/remembering/mourning the Holodomor. Template:Infobox settlement

Hi, I've noticed that since the 15th of October 2016 the variable:

pushpin_map = Ukraine

stopped working in Template:Infobox settlement. In fact the map of Ukraine is not shown in the infobox. It have affected all Ukrainian settlements where that infobox is used. (e.g. Sviatoshyn, Ozeryshche (Ukraine), Chernihiv)

We need an article for Cannabis in the Ukraine

We now have by-country articles on cannabis for more than half the countries on the planet, but lack one for Ukraine. Anyone here interested in helping fill that need? Cannabis in Ukraine needs improvement

We have a new article Cannabis in Ukraine, but it could really use improvement and expansion, especially from anyone who can read Ukrainian and Russian sources. With a little polishing, it'd also be really useful to improve the translated version for Ukrainian Wikipedia since it's a topic of increasing interesting these days. Ukrainian companies with Russian names

Many articles about Ukrainian companies which previously used the Russian transliteration of the title have been changed to use the Ukrainian spelling instead (Pashko (talk · contribs) and Pashko 2 (talk · contribs) renamed many of those). At times this was done even for companies that no longer exist and always used the Russian spelling during their existence, or still exist and chose to retain the Russian variant of their names. Dnepr (motorcycle) was a notable case (see this image) and has already been renamed; I also noticed the same issue with the article Kyivnaukfilm (which also used Russian spelling before its demise) and there are probably countless similar cases. Given that this is a controversial matter, I thought it was better to seek some feedback from this wikiproject before nominating any of them for renaming.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 18:14, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

Need help with Cyrillic to finish those descriptions

Recently I've visited Lychakiv Cemetery, and I was surprised many tombstones were not on Commons yet, even for some notable people. Sadly, I was in a hurry, so couldn't take more then few dozen photos - I think a dedicated wiki photo taking event would be a good idea. In any case, here are photos of graves which use Cyrillic alphabet which I cannot read - if you can ID them, please add the Cyrillic and transcribed names to the images and possibly relevant categories and/or include them in the relevant Wiki articles:

  • 055.JPG has now been appended to the article Solomiya Krushelnytska, although, since it nearly duplicates the 2006 photo already there, simply adding it to Commons Category:Solomiya Krushelnytska may suffice.
  • 051.JPG indicates D. M. Popov 17 X 1913 — 27 X 1963 DEAR HUSBAND AND FATHER FROM WIFE AND CHILDREN
  • 043.JPG indicates Colonel [POLKOVNIK] M.I. Kazakov 10.I.1917 — 5.IV.1971 FINAL GIFT FROM WIFE AND DAUGHTER-IN-LAW
  • 042.JPG is too deteriorated to decipher properly. The given name is Serhij and the family name appears to be Kuzynes'kij or Kuz'nims'kij. The dates are illegible: ?.10.19XX—X.XX.XXXX.
  • 019.JPG may be appended to the Polish Wikipedia article Leopold Lewicki (also in Russian and Ukrainian Wikipedias) and Commons Category:Grave of Leopold Levytskyi
  • 018.JPG the black plate on the left lists Maria Bałko 1900–1981 and Petro Bałko 1893–1982 (since there is no soft sign, the equivalent would be the Polish "Bałko", rather than "Balko").

These are not "votes". In the end, it all comes down to Wikipedia policy and which side of the discussion has a greater adherence to policy and greater evidence for its position. The majority doesn't always get its way. --Taivo (talk) 17:33, 3 October 2017 (UTC)
Each participant is indicating Oppose or Support and the description at WP:!VOTE explains that "... a reference to a "!vote" or "!voting" is a reminder and affirmation that the writer's comments in a poll, and the comments by others, are not voting, but are just offering individual views in a consensus-building discussion". As for "Wikipedia policy and which side of the discussion has a greater adherence to policy and greater evidence for its position", such adherence and evidence are claimed by both sides in this particular disagreement and the majority of previous discussions have been closed as no consensus. —Roman Spinner (talk)(contribs) 18:01, 3 October 2017 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Help needed with a Ukrainian-language video

Would anyone here be so kind as to help me transcribe what the lady says in this video about borscht cooking in the Poltava region? The video is already used to illustrate the featured article about borscht, but it would benefit from having English subtitles. Knowing Polish and Russian, I should be able to translate a Ukrainian text into English, but I can't really understand spoken Ukrainian. This is why I'm asking for a transcript. Kharkov Governorate vs Little Russia vs UNR

I am not sure where best to note this, because it is regarding several article differences.

The Little Russia stub articles list two historical date ranges from to 1700s to 1800s, for the administrative or territorial classification, which existed during these times. Yet, a map dated 1904, on the Ukraine article, reflects the Little Russia region as well. This confuses me, because I am not finding this 1900s time period in the Little Russia articles, but the map appears to inducate the classification still existed until at least the earliest years of the 1900s.

The Kharkov Governorate articles similarly indicate some time periods in the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as referencing its establishment within the Soviet era beginning 1918. Does this mean this designation came and went and came again, or do these names just differ depending on the source country designating such?

To add to my confusion, the article about the short-lived Ukranian National Republic lists a different start date between articles. The UNR article references June 10, 1917. The Ukraine article indicates June 23, 1917. This probably is not due to sources based on before vs after the regional Gregorian Calendar switch over, but I personally had similar calendar trouble researching a relative actually born on June 10, 1917 in Charkow, AKA Kharkov AKA Kharkiv.

In attempting to piece together the data from and differences between the various artices, I have ended up with asdumptions that are probably quite incorrect. My assumptions are that either Little Russia or the Kharkov Governorate, depending on which article, transitioned into the Ukranian National Republic on June 10 or 23, 1917. Then, the UNR transitioned into, or back into, the Kharkov Governate or Kharkiv Governate under Soviet rule in 1918.

If all these differences can be resolved, it might help other readers. On a personal note, it would help me determine exactly what province, and country or empire my relative was born under in Charkow, June 10, 1917. Tesseract501 (talk) 17:23, 28 April 2019 (UTC)

The last question is the easiest. Your relative was born in the Russian Provisional Government (a successor of the Russian Empire) which was governed from Saint Petersburg by the so-called Russian Provisional Government, in Kharkiv Governorate. Concerning the first part, the governorates were the administrative divisions of the Russian Empire and later, for some time, also of the successor states, until they were gradually abolished in the 1920s. Indeed, some of them were primarily inhabited by Ukrainians, but if we are talking about Ukrainian states, these have nothing to do with the governorates. The Ukrainian states were the Ukranian National Republic and then the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic which was one of the founders of the Soviet Union in 1922.--Ymblanter (talk) 17:47, 28 April 2019 (UTC)

Spelling discrepancy between a template and an article name

There is a useful template {{Ukraine Labelled Map}} that shows the names of the oblasts in Ukraine. But the template uses the name "Zaporizhzhia Oblast" whereas the article is named "Zaporizhia Oblast". @Curb Safe Charmer:, the article may be notable, but it looks like it was created through rough translation, possibly google with mixture of Russian romanization. The article uses some weird place names like Baltic district in Odessa region (like Baltic states, I guess). There is no such place and never existed. However there is Balta Raion near historic Codima-Podolie area. Also it looks as a self promotional piece, rather than a normal article. It is kind of difficult to get a clear idea, due to rough translation, but looking over the references provided, Martyniuk is a local activist of Balta Raion in Odessa Oblast, a patriot. He served as a representative in Balta Raion council and ran for Kiev City council and Verkhovna Rada. The article lists whole bunch of awards, but never explains how and for what feats they were awarded. The whole article could and should be shortened to may be two three sentences from the information it contains now. Updates due to the 2020 Administrative reform

As a result of the reform, we have several hundred outdated articles. I have started to update them, and I generally plan to do this work myself, however, if someone is interested in doing this the activity must be coordinated. Every so often anonymous users change the translated name for Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev. This edit, for example, just happened and I have no way of being confident in the edit. Can someone who speaks Ukrainian confirm the proper spelling and leave it on the talk page, just so I know what to revert to when the article is inevitably vandalized? The Ukrainian Wikipedia says Костилєв which is indeed what one would expect by using the reverse WP:UKR but it is not referenced either. To me, Камень does not make sense in this context, it literally means "stone" and might be some previous nickname, but I do not see any evidence this being the case. Олегович is a patronymic (which just means his father's name is/ was Oleh).--Ymblanter (talk) 17:54, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

Why does Kyiv Airport lead to Kyiv International Airport (Zhuliany)? Why not a disambig?

Disambiguation pages/redirects are usually based on what is the more prominent subject or if there is one? I suspect Boryspil International Airport is more well known/prominent than Kyiv International Airport (Zhuliany) so shouldn't "Kyiv Airport" go to the former?

Notability of a political party

Hi. I found this article: Ukrainian Party "Green Planet". I'm wondering whether it passes Wikipedia's notability requirements. There's certainly no significant coverage in English-language sources, but as I don't speak Ukrainian, I can't judge whether there is significant coverage in Ukrainian. Types of hromadas

Now, we need to agree how we call different type of amalhamated hromadas, which in Ukrainian are міська громада, селищна громада, and сільська громада. One option would be to call them city hromada, settlement hroada, and village hromada. The drawbacks are that this is not English, and in some cases might be misleading (for example, a rural settlement which is not a village can be the seat of a village hromada). Another option, which I so far was using, is to use urban hromada and rural hrtomada. This is much better English, but this classification does not discriminate between міська громада and селищна громада. My preference is the second one, but we need to discuss the terms before I add so many of them that correction would become impractical. Ymblanter, thank you, for considering my opinion. I think your proposition is fine if it is used for general purpose description or brevity, but, if need to be disambiguate between an urban-type settlement and city, I think we should stick to the accepted norms. The introduction of "amalgamated" is very weird. Itself, the word hromada is pretty unique and, unlike the Ukrainian language that requires disambiguation, the use of amalgamated, I think, is overkill. It is not known to me the reasoning why there was introduced the word amalgamated over more common united, and what made the process of amalgamation to prevail over the process of bringing together in closer ties of union. I'm fully agree with Aleksandr Grigoryev that the word hromada is pretty unique and the use of "amalgamated" is overkill. But RGloucester wants very much to keep hromada article about hromadas before reform and amalgamated hromada article about hromadas after reform apart, even though Ukrainian law explicitly states that the word “amalgamated” should not used in the name of a territorial hromadas. --Ookrainer (talk) 11:38, 29 December 2020 (UTC)

  • 'Amalgamated' is a necessary disambiguator. There is no other way to distinguish between new and old hromadas, especially where these overlap. I do not think the urban/rural clarification is necessary, as it serves no distinct purpose in administrative terms. That is why it was agreed at WP:P-NUK that the correct way to refer to these is Ternopil Amalgamated Hromada, &c., without the urban/rural clarification and retaining 'amalgamated' so as not to create any confusion between the old governmental form of Ternopil and the new one. 'Amalgamated' was chosen over 'united' because it was found to be more common when used with 'hromada' (as opposed to the English-translated 'united territorial community'), and indeed, because it is more sound as an English translation. I actually have been on the look-out for (Ukrainian) journalistic explanations about hromadas.... but it was until today and this request by Ymblanter that there are 3 kinds of hromada's (міська громада, селищна громада, and сільська громада). But I can not find (on the internet) 'why there are these 3 different names in use..... I assume they all have the same powers and rights? By the way, on decentralization.gov.ua (the official government website on decentralisation) the translations of the 3 hromadas is "city hromada", "town hromada" and "rural hromada"..... (for me city and town are synonyms.... The use of hromada names on decentralization.gov.ua is therefore (also) misleading.....)

These hromadas seems to be designed to confuse me....

Anyway.... I think that (therefore) it is best to use the terms urban hromada and rural hromada. For readers this can make clear that the hromada is predominantly rural or urban. My understanding is that these are not really 'types' of hromada, but rather a naming scheme based on the former status of the new administrative seat of the new amalgamated hromada. Therefore, in legislation, Ternopil Amalgamated Hromada will called 'Ternopil City Hromada', because the city of regional significance of Ternopil is its seat. Likewise, a hromada with its seat in a rural settlement becomes a 'rural hromada', &c. But, again, there is no functional difference between these as actual units. They all have the same powers. Firstly, hromadas doesn't 'Amalgamated' already, because Verkhovna Rada in April 2020 have passed the law and have changed name of gromadas from amalgamated territorial hromadas to territorial hromadas. And we renamed article about hromadas in uk-wiki to territorial hromada. So it only territorial, not amalgamated. Part of name 'amalgamated' is in the past. Forget it.
    Secondly, there are 3 kinds of gromadas - city, settlement (town) and rural. Using of this kinds in the name of articles is related to tradition of naming councils (city, settlement and rural), type of the administrative center (city, urban-type settlement or village) of the gromada and help for difference of hromadas which have the same name. --Kharkivian (talk) 10:27, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

Please see: Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style#RfC?, for a proposal relating to optional characters/marks for indicating vocal stress, used in some foreign languages, include "ruby" characters for Japanese and Korean, and znaki udareniya marks in Ukrainian and Russian. The short version is that, based on a rule already long found in MOS:JAPAN and consonant with WP:NOTDICT policy, MoS would instruct (in MOS:FOREIGN) not to use these marks (primarily intended for pedagogical purposes) except in unusual circumstances, like direct quotation, or discussion of the marks themselves. – Correct romanization per WP:UKR. These changes serve the article naming WP:CRITERIA of recognizability, naturalness, precision, conciseness, and consistency.

These are all small settlements in Ukraine. The current article names have spellings according to a less-appropriate standard, have non-Ukrainian spelling, or are just quirky or misspelled. I have not tested to see if any of the subjects have only a single most WP:COMMONNAME, but if they do then it is most likely to correspond to our standard romanization. Each proposed spelling is romanized according to the Ukrainian National system, which derives the official Latin-alphabet spelling, has been adopted by the UNGEGN and BGN/PCGN (source of Ukrainian place-name spellings on the authoritative GeoNames database), and in each of these cases also corresponds to a variant of the widely used modified Library of Congress romanization.

I confirmed Ukrainian names by looking at the corresponding article on Ukrainian Wikipedia. Checked each new title for conflicts and adjusted the title disambiguation. Some of these have been renamed previously, but without any discussion.  —Michael Z. 20:30, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

Is Julian Bilecki Polish, Ukraianian or both?

See talk. Maybe there are some sources in Ukrainian? The most reliable English source we have, NYT, calls him a Pole, and it and CNN spell his name in Polish. YV spells his name as "Biletskiy, Yulian". Some unreliable websites, still spelling his name in Polish, mention he and some of his family remained in Ukraine after the war. There are mentions of a Ukrainian state ceremony involving them in 1990. This may be based on some Ukrainian news media? I didn't find any Polish-language sources discussing his story. My guess he is a member of the Polish minority in Ukraine, which may require changing the article a bit (he is described/categorized as a Pole). Could anyone more knowledgeable than I about Ukrainian/Russian surnames look over the last few edits on S1mple and tell me if the IP's edits are sufficiently obvious as to be true for anyone with a specific last name, or if that's original synthesis? Improvements for the article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitution_Day_(Ukraine)

Good morning! I found the mentioned article about Ukrainian Constitution Day is quite poorly written and think it still could be improved.

  1. There are only a few paragraphs, it could be more extensive
  • The last paragraph:

"In the 2000s most Ukrainians did not see Constitution Day as a holiday, but as an ordinary day off; about 10% believed it should be a working day (12% in 2008; this number had shrunk from 14% in 2003).[11] Only in Western Ukraine was the holiday among the list of most respected holidays in Ukraine.[12]"

is deprecated and not relevant at all. Even if there should be some polls results, I guess would be better to update them with more recent years and avoid claiming that only ppl in western Ukraine respect this, cause this statement already brings some political tone (imho).

I'd like to request some help for improving this article from this community.
