Habra (Bengali: হাবড়া) is a city, a municipality and a police station of Barasat sadar subdivision[2] in North 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is an administrative subdivision. Habra is situated on the Jessore Road between Kolkata and the Bangladesh border at Petrapole. Its location makes it an important town for export and import of goods between India and Bangladesh.

History

Under British rule it was a base for Royal Air Force fighters. It was also the first municipality in West Bengal to be governed by the centre-right Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP.

Geography

Habra is located at 22°50′N 88°38′E / 22.83°N 88.63°E / 22.83; 88.63.[3] It has an average elevation of 13 metres (42 feet).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[4] Habra had a population of 127,695. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Habra has an average literacy rate of 79%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 83%, and female literacy is 74%. In Habra, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Transport

It is 45 km from Sealdah Station and 22 km from Barasat on the Sealdah-Bangaon branch line of Eastern Railway.[5] It is part of the Kolkata Suburban Railway system. Habra Railway Station is on Station Road and beside of Habra High School. Station Road is directly connected on NH 35 (Jessore Road).

Buses from Habra Bus Terminal are directly connected to Naihati, Maslandapur, Bangaon, Barasat, Nagarukhra, Kalyani, Basirhut and Kolkata.

Rather than Bus or Train, Rental Taxi, Tracker, Auto Rickshaw, Cycle Van, Cycle rickshaw are other transportations for communication.

Politics

In 2006 Assembly elections, P K Bhattacharyya of CPI (M) defeated his nearest rival Tapati Dutta of Trinamool Congress, who had won the 2001 election defeating Amitava Nandi of CPI (M) for the Habra Assembly seat. In 1996, Baren Basu of CPI (M) had defeated his nearest rival Abdul Hamid Mandal of Congress . In 1991 and 1987, Kamal Sengupta (Bose) of CPI (M) defeated Biman Dutta of Congress. In 1982 Nirode Roy Choudhury defeated Biman Dutta of Congress. In 1977 Nirode Roy Choudhury of CPI (M) defeated his nearest rival Krishnadas Chattopadhyay of Congress.[6]After 2008 Municipal election, TMC defeated Left heavyly presently The municipality is run by TMC.

As per orders of the Delimitation Commission, 100 Habra assembly constituency covers Kumra, Pritibha, Rautara and Machhalandpur II gram panchayats of Habra I community development block and Habra municipality.[7]

Habra assembly constituency is part of Barasat (Lok Sabha constituency).[7]
