If I may suggest, now that you've posted the Eichorn article the draft below might be deleted. It's your talk page to do with as you like, but it's a bit hard to edit around.

As for formatting and pictures, a good way to learn is to look around at other articles to see what you think looks best. It can be helpful to break up long blocks of text into subsections. Perhaps it'd be possible to split the biography into two or three eras. Other than that, the formatting is usually kept fairly plain. As for photos, it's easy to upload them: the trick is in finding photos with appropriate licensing. If you have any personal photos then those'd be fine. There are might be pictures of the peaks he did first ascents on in the Wikicommons. File:Cathedral Peak.png is a so-so pic of Eichorn Pinnacle.

Thanks Justin and OMCV. I am beginning work on Tom Frost and Glen Dawson. Comments on Norman Clyde would be welcomed. I will defintely read up on Peter Croft, OMCV. I am still "learning the ropes" in Wikipedia, to use a climbing analogy, and have all sorts of things in mind. My biggest challenge right now is getting permission to use images. My next biggest challenge is hiking to the top of Mt. Whitney with my wife in ten days - she's never been above 12,000 feet except for the train ride up Pikes Peak. Hello Beerbeatriceadidiva. Wikipedia is much stricter about copyright than most other websites. When you say the photos are owned by you and your family, does that mean that you are the sole executor of your father's estate with complete control over your father's assets? Or is someone else the executor? Was your father the photographer? If not, then the copyrights probably belong to the photographer or their estate rather than to your father's estate. Owning a physical photographic print is not the same as owning all rights to that photo. In conclusion, it is up to you to prove in writing that you have complete rights to license these photos under a Creative Commons license. • Fuzzy search will soon be added to Special:Undelete, allowing administrators to search for deleted page titles with results similar to the search query. You can test this by adding ?fuzzy=1 to the URL, as with Special:Undelete?fuzzy=1. Currently the search only finds pages that exactly match the search term.
• A new bot will automatically revision delete unused file versions from files in Category:Non-free files with orphaned versions more than 7 days old.

• A newly revamped database report can help identify users who may be eligible to be autopatrolled.

Advice needed for article tagged for deletion

Hello Cullen328. I saw that you are a host at the Teahouse, so I decided to ask you directly here, just in case the Teahouse post doesn't receive a reply.

Today morning, I looked at some deletion notices for transportation articles. There were many articles about bus terminals and each one was individually tagged for deletion. So I tried to combine and merge them and created List of bus stations in Singapore to save the content. In another discussion, someone had suggested to create an entire list of bus stops (instead of individual articles), so I applied the same advice here. I modeled the article after seeing List of former bus stations in Singapore along with List of bus stations in Wales, List of Greyhound Bus stations, List of Perth bus stations, List of bus and coach stations in London. I liked the table layouts but I don't know how to create a table, so I just pasted them in a list, intending to learn the table layout and edit the article later.

However, I just checked it right now and it is tagged with a deletion banner. I was given no alert or email. Is there a way so that I can receive an update when an article I created is tagged for deletion?

I am also a bit disappointed that my article will be deleted. I spent a lot of time trying to learn how to copy within Wikipedia and I also put proper attribution. There are similar articles about bus terminals and I tried very hard to follow all the merge and attribution rules. So I don't understand what I am doing wrong. I understand that the article doesn't have a lot of references, but many articles do not have references. There are lots of articles about New Delhi which still don't have references (even though the information is correct as per my personal knowledge). However, when I took one of them and searched a bit, I did mange to find some references as well. Perhaps all it requires is a bit of time.

Is there any way I can improve the article so that it is not deleted? Should I create a table for the data and remove some of the information which is too detailed? I would be happy to receive some advice on how to proceed here. Thank you.--DreamLinker (talk) 16:03, 7 July 2017 (UTC)

Hello, DreamLinker. That discussion is taking place at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of bus stations in Singapore, and I see that you are advocating quite effectively for keeping the article. I do not see the lack of table formatting as an obstacle to keeping the list article since that is a technical issue not a content issue, and any editor who is good at table coding can do that in a few minutes. I would add references to a few sources that discuss these bus stations as a group. Bring that to the attention of the nominator who seems willing to withdraw the AfD.

Advice on Article about my father.

Hi Jim

Thanks for your response in the Tea House on my proposed article about my father (User:Robertjgray/sandbox) who died last year and your offer to discuss this.

I'm inclined to agree with your view that the lowest level of the Legion d' Honneur does not make a good case for notability although I see a number of entries in the List of foreign recipients of the Légion d'Honneur do in fact have short entries e.g. Bill_Cross with, in this case, only a single reference.

The case for notability is that my father received considerable press coverage in both the UK and Germany (as well as elsewhere) when he started the campaign to preserve the ruins of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin. He went on to meet the British Prime Minister, David Cameron although I was not able to find a suitable independent reference for this.

Perhaps the most obvious shortfall is that I am not independent, hence my request for guidance in the Tea House.

If you have the time I'd appreciate your opinion.

Hello Robertjgray. I haven't read the "considerable press coverage" that you describe. Instead, I commented only on the issue of whether the Legion of Honor award by itself confers notability. As for comparing your draft with Bill Cross, please note that this article is rated stub class, which is Wikipedia's lowest quality rating. We have 5,437,480 articles, many of which are in poor condition and should be either improved or deleted. We work on that 24/7/365. Surely you are not trying to write a low quality article subject to deletion. Instead, I suggest that you model your draft article on Good articles and Featured articles, which have gone through peer review. Yes, the article on Bill Cross has only one reference, but it is an article in a respected newspaper that is read worldwide, which goes into considerable detail about this person's long military career and entire life. Hi Jim, Thanks for your time, it's much appreciated. No I am certainty not looking to produce a low quality article, I just used Bill Cross as an example of what got me started on this article. At the time I was unaware of its' deficiencies.

Anyway you ask for the best example of an article about my father. I'd suggest this one in Die_Welt, it's in German - with only rudimentary German I used Chrome to view it. This one in the Los Angeles Times was pretty wide spread as it was based on an Associated Press story. Robertjgray (talk) 04:55, 8 July 2017 (UTC)

Hello, Robertjgray. I agree that the Die Welt source is pretty solid, after using Google Translate to read it. The Los Angeles Times source is helpful but it contains less biographical content. I suggest that you remove sources that you have written, since you have a conflict of interest. Please read WP:BLP1E since some editors may see your draft article as an example of that. Thanks Jim. I haven't written any of the sources. You may be referring to the three books that my father wrote? I found the papers for two of them after his death and have published them. When I used the wizard to generate the references via the ISBN my name popped up as publisher. Should I remove the links or just my name?

I think I see what you mean about people notable for only one event. His first book was reviewed by the Tavistock Times (I've cited this now in the draft) and was also quoted in the Daily Mail here commenting on the Nurenberg raid in 1944 that he was involved in but I wasn't sure if that was worthy of inclusion. Robertjgray, self published books are rarely considered reliable, especially when written by the subject of an article and published by his son. I recommend that you build your draft article based on the highest quality reliable sources that have professional editorial control, such as Die Welt. This is the tip of what you can find about him, if time is taken properly, and all the editing decisions are not made with haste or by users who have no knowledge of academia

Can anyone look into the article "Nader El-Bizri" after having searched properly and taken the time to read the sources? This is serious and if not handled properly can result in damage to the living person concerned.

I am an academician and not able to dedicate time to following wikipedia, but I am rather shocked how academics and scholars are here at the mercy of editors/users who make editorial decisions with haste and do not think about the consequences on living persons. Is there a way you can look into this or suggest it as a matter to be considered by responsible and serious editors with some knowledge of the humanities?

What would be your advice to seek knowledgable evaluations on the discussions taking place under the deletion discussion of the article "Nader El-Bizri", or proper refereeing? The user that initiated the deletion is now taking the discussion towards the merits of the Kuwait foundation and this cycle can continue endlessly. Are there users who have knowledge in the arts and humanities that can contribute to this discussion or that it is flagged to the attention of such expert editors? The webpage of the user who initiated the deletion should be looked at closely since in normal circumstances some etiquette or minimal expertise in a given area should be available to make the judgement carry weight, in this case an academic is being judged by a user who specializes in the bios of businessmen and billionaires. Unsubstantiated judgements in this regard are mere opinions, and the motives behind opinions may not be clear or reliable (AcademeEditorial (talk) 11:32, 10 July 2017 (UTC))

Hello, AcademeEditorial. Wikipedia is the encyclopedia that anyone can edit. Emphasis on anyone, as long as they comply with our policies and guidelines. Users who specialize in "bios of businessmen and billionaires" are welcome to edit articles about butterflies, movies, nuclear physics, academics or brain surgery, as long as they comply with our policies and guidelines. They can edit it they have a PhD, or they can edit if they are a high school dropout. We have no qualifications required to edit any article, except compliance with our policies and guidelines. So, when you criticize other editors on this basis, you are violating one of our most important cultural norms that have made this the world's most popular reference work. So, please stop that disruptive behavior.

I have supported keeping this article even though I am not an academic and only have a bachelor's degree. Do you want to discount my support for keeping the article because I do not have a post-graduate degree? Think that through, please. Cullen³²⁸ Let's discuss it 06:49, 12 July 2017 (UTC)

Thanks kindly Cullen328 for your note here. As you perhaps can see from my latest replies to more than one editor on Wikipedia, and on my newly generated user-page, I began seeing how the process of editing unfolds and how improvements are made to given articles. I guess the various discussions and edits that happened showed me that my initial concerns were hasty and alarmist. I hope that I did not offend fellow users. In fact I adopted later a different approach when I began to see how the editing and discussion unfolds. I believe this is due to the newness of my participation here. I must say that the article in question and other entries in Wikipedia can still benefit from my input, but I am feeling hesitant to make any edits just in case it affects the reception of the articles by other editors, especially since philosophy articles interest me as an educator and affect my students. I posted already some notes in discussions that highlight my motive of joining here. Thanks for pointing out the etiquette and policy aspects, this is helpful indeed. Any advice on how to take the next steps in improving the article in question? It has a couple of references that can still be improved by looking closely at the "Summary CV of El-Bizri" on the University website as a source, which is already noted in the references, and there are a couple of punctuation errors and minor typos that can be corrected, which resulted from recent edits by other experienced editors. I think there might be sources that have been used from other languages by past editors in setting his birthdate, city of birth etc. since there are also Arabic and Persian pages that report his bio and works (AcademeEditorial (talk) 21:05, 12 July 2017 (UTC))

Interlanguage and red links--from teahouse

Hi, I'm forwarding this to here because it seemed like nobody wanted to answer it in the teahouse, and you were the person recommended to me in that initial talk page message. My question might just be a little too granular. . . . Anyway, I've been trying to be more thorough in my checking of policy before making editorial decisions as I've come to realize just how much policy there is, and something that's been bugging me is the usage is of Template:Interlanguage link vs Template:Interlanguage Link (pardon if formatting is messy I can't preview bc the teahouse is weird). The Interlanguage links help page says that "It is sometimes possible to combine the two approaches" of leaving the English redlink with the parenthetical ILL after it, but I can't imagine a reason why this approach would ever be impossible. I mostly just want to know what the preferred option is, because up till now I've been trying to avoid redlinks and hence linking to people like Pierpaolo Vargiu in such a way that the redlink isn't visible but now that I'm seeing ILL templates left and right I'm not sure if this is right. • (talk page stalker) Looking at the 10 or so "sources", none of those are reliable sources, and probably shouldn't be in that requested list at all. In particular, the blogs, IMDB and the google search. You can't use a google search as a reference. From my experience, the first thing you need to do is find at least TWO sources that are both reliable (meet WP:RS, so are mainstream publications) and where the coverage is significant, meaning the article does more than just mention the artist, and instead the article is all about that artist. Language doesn't matter. That is always the safest place to start because if you can't find that, then it won't survive a deletion discussion so you would be wasting your time writing anything at all. Help please

Was doing some recent changes patrolling and can across IPs trying to added hateful stuff to this page Suicide of Tyler Clementi. Managed to get the page protected but this was left on the talk page [[1]] and was thinking should the IP be blocked for this? Teahouse for new admins

Hi, Cullen! Has your head stopped spinning yet? 0;-D I see that you asked me, is there a Teahouse for new administrators? But you asked it half-a-page above, buried amid all the congratulations, so I thought I'd better reply here at the bottom of the page where you can see it (and others can chime in). There is a help page, formerly called New Admin School, now called Wikipedia:Administrators' guide. That can be helpful in learning to use the tools, although it gets out of date (I had to make several corrections when I was a new admin hoping IT would teach ME instead of the other way around). It also links to pages where you can practice using the tools. There probably should be a central place to discuss adminship issues but as far as I know there isn't. The usual thing is for the new admin to simply ask for advice at the talk page of other admins you trust to serve as a kind of mentor. This is a way to get connected with admin thinking on the judgment calls, like when to protect pages and for how long, or when to block and for how long. I'd be glad to serve as one of those people on issues where I am competent (which does not include everything admins do, even now). Any stalkers here have any suggestions of a more general place for admins to ask questions and (if necessary) blow off steam? --MelanieN (talk) 16:21, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

The most important piece of advice I can give is, "you are not indispensable". Any action you're not sure of, leave it for someone else to do—there is literally no circumstance where the admin taking the decision needs to be you, and if you're unsure of anything, it's a lot better for all involved to let someone else make the decision.

The admin area I always recommend a new admin start off in is CAT:EX. It's generally backlogged so there's usually something to do, most of the decisions are uncontroversial as everything in there has by definition had a week to be contested if it's actually contestable, and it will provoke a steady stream of complaints from well-intentioned newbies on your userpage which provides good practice for the "politely explaining policy" aspect of adminship. (Just don't be afraid to refuse to delete articles if you think they're worth keeping, even though it will always provoke complaints.) Steer clear of blocking and protection until you're more well-established—while deletion gets the publicity, it's actually probably the least contentious of the three main admin areas. ‑ Iridescent 17:05, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

Good advice by both of you. Deletion is the easiest to reverse. It's hard to reverse a block, as the damage is already done. WP:RFPP is another good place to start. You might also consider adding some helper scripts. My common.js has several. Some are editor only, but the MfD and AfD scripts are a must, the CSD script is also handy. Feel free to email or ping me here if you have a question. And yes, the admin school is very good, but you will never stop learning, there is too much to master here. One other bit of advice: don't feel you HAVE to do any of the usual admin things to earn your mop. You said a main reason for asking for the tools was so you could view deleted articles and respond to questions about them, and that is also a much-needed service here. As Iridescent said, there are lots of other people doing this stuff. BTW one piece of advice about RFPP, which is my favorite (it's about the only admin action for which you get thanked): on every occasion before you start patrolling there, look at the history to see if there is any OTHER admin also actively patrolling. I spent a couple of days thanking 315 people and responding to the wonderful comments and bad jokes that flooded my talk page and my Facebook page. And I am in the midst of six solid days of challenging work IRL. I am self employed which means that my boss is a harsh taskmaster. At least I am making very good money this week.

The Teahouse for new administrators comment was a wistful joke, of course. I know that there are many excellent administrators that I can turn to for advice. And I will.

I have had a page for a while called User:Cullen328/Tools and I will be adding links to it as I learn about various things. I have begun studying the Administrators' guide. And I was easily able to read some deleted hateful talk page content, which enabled me to give a more informed response to an editor. So, it begins. I will second (or fifth) the suggestion that deletion and RfPP are good starting points. I pretty much stuck to CSD and page protection when I fist got the bit. I suggest avoiding the drama boards and similar type places where you may have to lower the boom on people. I still try very hard avoid ANI which I have always hated. That said sometimes things will just land in your lap and you will be that guy on the spot. When I went to RfA I had this insanely naive idea that I was going to be the first admin to get through six months w/o blocking anyone. Alas I don't think I made it through 24 hrs. As it happened I was working through the CSD log and blundered onto a G10 attack page that was just crazy over the top. Naturally I made it go away but then I realized that there was no way I could ignore the author and I'd have been ashamed to refer such an obvious troll to another admin. So much for fantasy land. Just take it one day at a time and don't be afraid to ask questions. You are one of the most level headed people I know on here. Hello, John from Idegon. My tentative opinion is that username is suboptimal but probably not a policy violation. If it was interspersed with periods or colons, it would look much more like an IP address. If you want a more definitive answer, please ask one of the active administrators at WP:UAA. There are two exceptions: RfC, and this case, where I was reverted like a vandal, and asked the IP (on the article talk and the first of five IP talks) if it was a misclick. administrator noticeboard

Hey Jim how are you. One thing struck me that you said. You were greeted when you first started editing in a friendly and helpful way this made you feel good and today you are very successful at Wikipedia and enjoy your editing here. My experience has been quite different. From day one last year I have been badgered, bullied, threatened, insulted, called a vandal you name it. Simply for editing in facts with plenty of proper RS. Let me give you a seasoned experienced editor a problem and you tell me the right way that you would go about handling it. The article is about a football Coach X who takes over a long suffering poor club and puts together an impressive 8 year record, winning three super bowls and finishing with a superb 98-30 record. Now what if the prior fired Coach Y writes an autobiography stating that he engineered the turnaround even though his record was terrible. He set the record for the most losses in league history, but then in his last season won a few games. The Wikipedia entry (for coach X) goes like this: Under Coach Y's leadership the team improved more rapidly and dramatically than anytime in league history, further the amazing turnaround and super bowl run began under coach Y. At the same time the editor adds commentary deriding coach X and saying he was just lucky.

Now keep in mind you have been using the talk pages extensively for a year, there is a small but determined group against you representing a minority opinion, they will not budge. You are friendly to them and they deride you. You have a ton of proper RS for the mainstream viewpoint and these guys are using the autobiography as their source. You have gotten support from passersby on the talk page but are not organized.

Do you just quit and leave the incorrect info to stand in Wikipedia?

Hello Aceruss. If I was you, I would start by addressing the issue of edit warring. I got one mild warning about edit warring in my early days of editing, read the policy, and never, ever, ever engaged in that behavior again. Then, if I was you, when I was talking about Rudy Giuliani and David Dinkins, I would state that clearly, instead of spinning a parable about football coaches. That seems disingenuous to me. If I was in a protracted content dispute on a specific article or pair of articles, I would seriously consider moving on and forgetting those articles. Personally, I consider a strong focus on a handful of articles to be incompatible with long term happiness as an encyclopedia editor. Let me say at this point that I have not looked at the underlying issue. I am answering in general. I believe that it is counterproductive to try to assign credit or blame to individual politicians for decreases or increases in local crime rates. Far better to discuss the full range of sociological and criminological factors that affect crime rates over decades. But that hard work is no fun. If I really felt strongly about such a specific article, I would utilize dispute resolution. I certainly would not engage in edit warring behavior. Fair enough. I proposed a fair resolution to the editor who lodged the dispute after reading his response. Hopefully we can work it out and that will be that.
