I don't live on Cullen Ct, but I like the street sign

If you have any interest in editing Wikipedia by smartphone, I encourage you to read my essay, Smartphone editing. Thank you.

Welcome to my talk page I use the name Cullen328 on Wikipedia, but you can call me "Jim" because that's my real first name. If you want to start a new conversation, please click "New section" at the top of this page. I keep the old comments from July and August of 2009 that follow the "Contents" here, because these friendly words of greeting made me feel welcome when I first started editing Wikipedia.

The importance of a friendly greeting

Hello and welcome to my talk page. If you want to start a new conversation, please click "New section" at the top of this page. I keep the comments that follow from July and August of 2009 readily visible, because these friendly words of greeting made me feel welcome here on Wikipedia when I first started editing. Please offer your thoughts

I would appreciate comments and suggestions on any contributions I make. I am learning.Cullen328 (talk) 03:22, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work on Jules Eichorn. He's been needing an article for a while.   Will Beback  talk  06:28, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If I may suggest, now that you've posted the Eichorn article the draft below might be deleted. It's your talk page to do with as you like, but it's a bit hard to edit around.
As for formatting and pictures, a good way to learn is to look around at other articles to see what you think looks best. It can be helpful to break up long blocks of text into subsections. Perhaps it'd be possible to split the biography into two or three eras. Other than that, the formatting is usually kept fairly plain. As for photos, it's easy to upload them: the trick is in finding photos with appropriate licensing. If you have any personal photos then those'd be fine. There are might be pictures of the peaks he did first ascents on in the Wikicommons. File:Cathedral Peak.png is a so-so pic of Eichorn Pinnacle.
As before, feel free to ask if you have any questions. There are several editors here who are mountaineers or just admirers of the Sierra, so you're in good company.   Will Beback  talk  21:13, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Many editors create "sandbox" pages for drafting articles. For example, User talk:Cullen328/Sandbox.   Will Beback  talk  00:17, 1 August 2009

Your climber biographies

Hey Jim, just wanted to say welcome and thanks for your contributions to the Sierra Nevada climbing history articles. You're filling a niche that's been missing here, I look forward to working with you. --Justin (talk) 11:54, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll second that. Nice work on Allen Steck and welcome to Wikipedia. I don't know who you are planning to write up next but if your taking requests I think Peter Croft (climber) could really use a page. If you ever have any questions please ask. Thanks again for your great additions.--OMCV (talk) 02:25, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Justin and OMCV. I am beginning work on Tom Frost and Glen Dawson. Comments on Norman Clyde would be welcomed. I will defintely read up on Peter Croft, OMCV. I am still "learning the ropes" in Wikipedia, to use a climbing analogy, and have all sorts of things in mind. My biggest challenge right now is getting permission to use images. My next biggest challenge is hiking to the top of Mt. Whitney with my wife in ten days - she's never been above 12,000 feet except for the train ride up Pikes Peak. As she's 56 and developing arthritis in her toes, it will be an accomplishment if she (and I) complete the Class 1 feat. Jim Heaphy (talk) 02:34, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Adding cover images

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your response. I fully agree with your rationale - but how do I "just do it"? I've gone to one of the image pages and tried to update the summary and licensing info (adapted from another album page from the same band), and was greeted with a rapid deletion message. The code I used was as follows:

Please join us in San Francisco!
A Wikipedia panel discussion about journalism
Panel discussion at a recent Wikipedia & Journalism event.

The last Wednesday evening of every month, wiki enthusiasts in the San Francisco Bay Area will gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas. We have two brief presentations lined up for our kickoff event in downtown San Francisco:

  • The Nueva Upper School recently hosted the first ever high school Wikipedia edit-a-thon. We will hear what interests them about Wikipedia, what they have learned so far, and what they hope to achieve.
  • Photojournalist Kris Schreier Lyseggen, author of The Women of San Quentin: The Soul Murder of Transgender Women in Male Prisons, will tell us about her work and how she researched the topic.

We allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. We will have beverages and light snacks.

Please note: You must register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict on this point.

Interview invitation from a Wikipedia researcher in University of Minnesota

Hello Cullen328,

I am Bowen Yu, a Ph.D. student from GroupLens Research at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. Currently, we are undertaking a study about turnover (editors leaving and joining) in WikiProjects within Wikipedia. We are trying to understand the effects of member turnovers in the WikiProject group, in terms of the group performance and member interaction, with a purpose of learning how to build successful online communities in future. More details about our project can be found on this meta-wiki page.

I notice you are active in activities related to project page and project talk page, so I wonder if I could invite you for an interview if you are interested in our study and willing to share your experience with us. The interview will be about 30 - 45 minutes via phone, Skype or Google Hangout. You will receive a $10 gift card as compensation afterwards.

Please reach me at bowen@cs.umn.edu if you are interested or have any questions.

Thank you,

Bowen

Hi Jim,

Thanks a lot for your response! All the photos are totally legal as they belong to me and my family and are featured on my father's official website and I've shared them with many publications to date with no technical glitch ever!!

So I'll read the guidelines you kindly sent, or if you have any further thoughts, please feel free to share!!

Thanks, Happy Fourth!! Béatrice Béatrice Beer, Soprano (talk) 23:34, 4 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Beerbeatriceadidiva. Wikipedia is much stricter about copyright than most other websites. When you say the photos are owned by you and your family, does that mean that you are the sole executor of your father's estate with complete control over your father's assets? Or is someone else the executor? Was your father the photographer? If not, then the copyrights probably belong to the photographer or their estate rather than to your father's estate. Owning a physical photographic print is not the same as owning all rights to that photo. In conclusion, it is up to you to prove in writing that you have complete rights to license these photos under a Creative Commons license. That means that anyone can use them for any purpose at any time without asking for permission. Be sure that you understand this thoroughly. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:24, 5 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

New page question

Hi,

How does a new page that has been created become active? What's the process?

Thanks, Updater500 (talk) 04:18, 6 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Updater500. A new page becomes active as soon as you click the "save" button. I am defining "active" as visible to anyone who searches for the name of that page. Are you talking about an encyclopedia article, a user page, an essay, a draft or what? Are you talking about visibility in a Google search? How are you defining "active"? Which specific page are you talking about? Cullen328 Let's discuss it 04:45, 6 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Advice needed for article tagged for deletion

Hello Cullen328. I saw that you are a host at the Teahouse, so I decided to ask you directly here, just in case the Teahouse post doesn't receive a reply.

Today morning, I looked at some deletion notices for transportation articles. There were many articles about bus terminals and each one was individually tagged for deletion. So I tried to combine and merge them and created List of bus stations in Singapore to save the content. In another discussion, someone had suggested to create an entire list of bus stops (instead of individual articles), so I applied the same advice here. I modeled the article after seeing List of former bus stations in Singapore along with List of bus stations in Wales, List of Greyhound Bus stations, List of Perth bus stations, List of bus and coach stations in London. I liked the table layouts but I don't know how to create a table, so I just pasted them in a list, intending to learn the table layout and edit the article later.

However, I just checked it right now and it is tagged with a deletion banner. I was given no alert or email. Is there a way so that I can receive an update when an article I created is tagged for deletion?

I am also a bit disappointed that my article will be deleted. I spent a lot of time trying to learn how to copy within Wikipedia and I also put proper attribution. There are similar articles about bus terminals and I tried very hard to follow all the merge and attribution rules. So I don't understand what I am doing wrong. I understand that the article doesn't have a lot of references, but many articles do not have references. There are lots of articles about New Delhi which still don't have references (even though the information is correct as per my personal knowledge). However, when I took one of them and searched a bit, I did mange to find some references as well. Perhaps all it requires is a bit of time.

Is there any way I can improve the article so that it is not deleted? Should I create a table for the data and remove some of the information which is too detailed? I would be happy to receive some advice on how to proceed here. Thank you.--DreamLinker (talk) 16:03, 7 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, DreamLinker. That discussion is taking place at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of bus stations in Singapore, and I see that you are advocating quite effectively for keeping the article. I do not see the lack of table formatting as an obstacle to keeping the list article since that is a technical issue not a content issue, and any editor who is good at table coding can do that in a few minutes. I would add references to a few sources that discuss these bus stations as a group. Bring that to the attention of the nominator who seems willing to withdraw the AfD.
I agree that you should have been notified. Currently, that is recommended "best practice" but is not mandatory. Good luck to you. Feel free to ask questions at any time. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 05:30, 8 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Cullen328. Thank you for your kind words. I have added some references and will add some more to try and show the notability. I went through a few AFD discussions and I am beginning to understand the process. Thank you once again for your help.--DreamLinker (talk) 06:03, 10 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Advice on Article about my father.

Hi Jim

Thanks for your response in the Tea House on my proposed article about my father (User:Robertjgray/sandbox) who died last year and your offer to discuss this.

I'm inclined to agree with your view that the lowest level of the Legion d' Honneur does not make a good case for notability although I see a number of entries in the List of foreign recipients of the Légion d'Honneur do in fact have short entries e.g. Bill_Cross with, in this case, only a single reference.

The case for notability is that my father received considerable press coverage in both the UK and Germany (as well as elsewhere) when he started the campaign to preserve the ruins of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin. He went on to meet the British Prime Minister, David Cameron although I was not able to find a suitable independent reference for this.

Perhaps the most obvious shortfall is that I am not independent, hence my request for guidance in the Tea House.

If you have the time I'd appreciate your opinion.

Regards Robert Gray Robertjgray (talk) 20:11, 7 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Robertjgray. I haven't read the "considerable press coverage" that you describe. Instead, I commented only on the issue of whether the Legion of Honor award by itself confers notability. As for comparing your draft with Bill Cross, please note that this article is rated stub class, which is Wikipedia's lowest quality rating. We have 5,437,480 articles, many of which are in poor condition and should be either improved or deleted. We work on that 24/7/365. Surely you are not trying to write a low quality article subject to deletion. Instead, I suggest that you model your draft article on Good articles and Featured articles, which have gone through peer review. Yes, the article on Bill Cross has only one reference, but it is an article in a respected newspaper that is read worldwide, which goes into considerable detail about this person's long military career and entire life. What is the best such source discussing your father? Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:42, 8 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jim, Thanks for your time, it's much appreciated. No I am certainty not looking to produce a low quality article, I just used Bill Cross as an example of what got me started on this article. At the time I was unaware of its' deficiencies.
Anyway you ask for the best example of an article about my father. I'd suggest this one in Die_Welt, it's in German - with only rudimentary German I used Chrome to view it. This one in the Los Angeles Times was pretty wide spread as it was based on an Associated Press story. Robertjgray (talk) 04:55, 8 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Robertjgray. I agree that the Die Welt source is pretty solid, after using Google Translate to read it. The Los Angeles Times source is helpful but it contains less biographical content. I suggest that you remove sources that you have written, since you have a conflict of interest. Please read WP:BLP1E since some editors may see your draft article as an example of that. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 05:13, 8 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Jim. I haven't written any of the sources. You may be referring to the three books that my father wrote? I found the papers for two of them after his death and have published them. When I used the wizard to generate the references via the ISBN my name popped up as publisher. Should I remove the links or just my name?
I think I see what you mean about people notable for only one event. His first book was reviewed by the Tavistock Times (I've cited this now in the draft) and was also quoted in the Daily Mail here commenting on the Nurenberg raid in 1944 that he was involved in but I wasn't sure if that was worthy of inclusion. Any suggestions on how I might proceed? Robertjgray (talk) 06:09, 8 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Robertjgray, self published books are rarely considered reliable, especially when written by the subject of an article and published by his son. I recommend that you build your draft article based on the highest quality reliable sources that have professional editorial control, such as Die Welt. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 00:30, 9 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Jim, Fair comment. I only included the books because they were there. I wasn't proposing them as source material. I presume that the right solution is to drop the statements that are not supported by the newspaper rather than removing the references to the books? I appreciate your time on this, I see I should have started on something simpler. Robertjgray (talk) 01:34, 9 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Editorial Referee Request or Intervention

Hello Cullen328

The article "Nader El-Bizri" has recently attracted the attention of some editors even though it exists since 2008 with many edits by diverse users over the years. The recent approach to the article by some users has not been done with patience and to properly look at sources.

For example since El-Bizri is an academic, the first official and reliable source would be his university formal website which is: https://www.aub.edu.lb/fas/cvsp/Pages/El-Bizri.aspx This website contains his university formal summary CV that is downloadable as PDF: https://www.aub.edu.lb/fas/cvsp/Documents/Nader%20El-Bizri%20Summary%20CV%20(Spring%202017).pdf These give the formal details as vetted by the university

Then, as an example of the prestigious awards he received, check the following Ordered Universe Project under the patronage of the AHRC in the UK: https://ordered-universe.com/2015/12/04/kuwait-honours-professor-nader-el-bizri-arabic-science-and-philosophy/ Also see this as noted on the university website: https://www.aub.edu.lb/news/2015/Pages/kfas-3.aspx

He was also ranked 59 amongst all Thought Leaders in the Arab world (and this groups not only philosophers but scientists, journalists, activists, religious authorities, poets) [http://www.thoughtleaders.world/en/arabic-2016/ If you search within the rankings and designate the subfield of philosophy, he is 3rd in the Arab world (and the Arabs have very rarely living philosophers nowadays!).

This is the tip of what you can find about him, if time is taken properly, and all the editing decisions are not made with haste or by users who have no knowledge of academia

Can anyone look into the article "Nader El-Bizri" after having searched properly and taken the time to read the sources? This is serious and if not handled properly can result in damage to the living person concerned.

I am an academician and not able to dedicate time to following wikipedia, but I am rather shocked how academics and scholars are here at the mercy of editors/users who make editorial decisions with haste and do not think about the consequences on living persons. Is there a way you can look into this or suggest it as a matter to be considered by responsible and serious editors with some knowledge of the humanities?

Thank you (AcademeEditorial (talk) 15:30, 8 July 2017 (UTC))[reply]

Advice

What would be your advice to seek knowledgable evaluations on the discussions taking place under the deletion discussion of the article "Nader El-Bizri", or proper refereeing? The user that initiated the deletion is now taking the discussion towards the merits of the Kuwait foundation and this cycle can continue endlessly. Are there users who have knowledge in the arts and humanities that can contribute to this discussion or that it is flagged to the attention of such expert editors? The webpage of the user who initiated the deletion should be looked at closely since in normal circumstances some etiquette or minimal expertise in a given area should be available to make the judgement carry weight, in this case an academic is being judged by a user who specializes in the bios of businessmen and billionaires. Unsubstantiated judgements in this regard are mere opinions, and the motives behind opinions may not be clear or reliable (AcademeEditorial (talk) 11:32, 10 July 2017 (UTC))[reply]

Hello, AcademeEditorial. Wikipedia is the encyclopedia that anyone can edit. Emphasis on anyone, as long as they comply with our policies and guidelines. Users who specialize in "bios of businessmen and billionaires" are welcome to edit articles about butterflies, movies, nuclear physics, academics or brain surgery, as long as they comply with our policies and guidelines. They can edit it they have a PhD, or they can edit if they are a high school dropout. We have no qualifications required to edit any article, except compliance with our policies and guidelines. So, when you criticize other editors on this basis, you are violating one of our most important cultural norms that have made this the world's most popular reference work. So, please stop that disruptive behavior.
I have supported keeping this article even though I am not an academic and only have a bachelor's degree. Do you want to discount my support for keeping the article because I do not have a post-graduate degree? Think that through, please. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:49, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks kindly Cullen328 for your note here. As you perhaps can see from my latest replies to more than one editor on Wikipedia, and on my newly generated user-page, I began seeing how the process of editing unfolds and how improvements are made to given articles. I guess the various discussions and edits that happened showed me that my initial concerns were hasty and alarmist. I hope that I did not offend fellow users. In fact I adopted later a different approach when I began to see how the editing and discussion unfolds. I believe this is due to the newness of my participation here. I must say that the article in question and other entries in Wikipedia can still benefit from my input, but I am feeling hesitant to make any edits just in case it affects the reception of the articles by other editors, especially since philosophy articles interest me as an educator and affect my students. I posted already some notes in discussions that highlight my motive of joining here. Thanks for pointing out the etiquette and policy aspects, this is helpful indeed. Any advice on how to take the next steps in improving the article in question? It has a couple of references that can still be improved by looking closely at the "Summary CV of El-Bizri" on the University website as a source, which is already noted in the references, and there are a couple of punctuation errors and minor typos that can be corrected, which resulted from recent edits by other experienced editors. I think there might be sources that have been used from other languages by past editors in setting his birthdate, city of birth etc. since there are also Arabic and Persian pages that report his bio and works (AcademeEditorial (talk) 21:05, 12 July 2017 (UTC))[reply]

Hello! Jim

What is the best way to nominate an article for AfD? Sinner (talk) 02:06, 17 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Nazim Hussain Pak. Please read and study WP:AFD, and follow the step-by-step instructions carefully. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 02:26, 17 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Questions I dare not ask at your RfA

  1. Do you think your RfA should be deleted per WP:CSD#G11?
  2. You portray yourself as a relatively kind person, as do other editors. Yet, you would A7 an obviously notable article about Dexter? Wouldn't that be a WP:BLA violation? I mean, if you think Dexter is extremely cute, I'm sure he is and I'm sure Dexter would modestly agree with you. As a future administrator, you should know that BLA and Truth trump CSD policy. Did you even notify Dexter of your intentions? Please explain yourself or I'll have to report you to the SPCA.

Thank you for befuddling me, Bbb23. It is just what I need 24 hours into this process. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 17:45, 17 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure if you're serious, but in case you are, it was humor that I felt wouldn't necessarily work well at an RfA, which is such a serious process. If you are truly befuddled, what exactly befuddles you, or what about my special brand of humor don't you get?--Bbb23 (talk) 17:54, 17 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The dearest Liver & White Boston Terrier of all

Jim, I am so, so pleased you are finally running for RfA. The picture of your lovely doggie was my wallpaper for ages. Just a lovely dear sitting all pretty with his wee little paws like that. Plus, I love what you and your wife have done with your lives, and all the help you have been to people. Just wonderful! (Keep asking 'why' things are the way they are and then you may hit many birds with one stone.) You are what is right with the world. Thank you! Interlanguage and red links--from teahouse

Hi, I'm forwarding this to here because it seemed like nobody wanted to answer it in the teahouse, and you were the person recommended to me in that initial talk page message. My question might just be a little too granular. . . . Anyway, I've been trying to be more thorough in my checking of policy before making editorial decisions as I've come to realize just how much policy there is, and something that's been bugging me is the usage is of Template:Interlanguage link vs Template:Interlanguage Link [en] (pardon if formatting is messy I can't preview bc the teahouse is weird). The Interlanguage links help page says that "It is sometimes possible to combine the two approaches" of leaving the English redlink with the parenthetical ILL after it, but I can't imagine a reason why this approach would ever be impossible. I mostly just want to know what the preferred option is, because up till now I've been trying to avoid redlinks and hence linking to people like Pierpaolo Vargiu in such a way that the redlink isn't visible but now that I'm seeing ILL templates left and right I'm not sure if this is right. Should I be using Pierpaolo Vargiu [it] in such situations? Mehmuffin (talk) 14:46, 19 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

(watching:) what you did for the person is fine, - sorry, I don't understand the rest of the question. "ill" is just a shortcut (redirect) to "interlanguage link". I use the shortcut. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:43, 20 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You've just set a record

Cullen's RfA in progress

In the very least, at least temporarily. I don't want to jinx anything, but the most number of support votes ever in an unopposed RfA was Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Ealdgyth, with 250 in support (with two neutrals). About an hour ago, you surpassed that, currently sitting at 256 supports. For all RfAs, that's now tied for the 3rd most ever. No matter the final outcome, this is nothing short of historic. Bravo! --Hammersoft (talk) 20:08, 20 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Hammersoft. I will comment on all of this when it is over. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 20:20, 20 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Quite wise, and I certainly wouldn't expect you to comment now. I just wanted you to be aware of it, in case you were not. --Hammersoft (talk) 20:25, 20 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Congratulations at breaking an all time record. Obviously I can't suppress my own pride at being the nominator (Ritchie333 too, whose RfA I also nominated). This is one RfA where the 'crats could easily IAR and make an early close. Any oppose votes that come now will be blatant blind bad faith. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 02:46, 21 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Don't make me have to hat this! You're going to jinx it. We've all see this before. A candidate gets a scarce 265 !votes and then suddenly, a storm of opposes and it all goes pear-shaped. He's not out of the woods yet! Anna Frodesiak (talk) 04:25, 21 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

So, is that what you have to do to get a slightly-less-crappy admin T-shirt? Break all records? Record or not (although I am delighted by the record), Cullen will be an excellent admin and I expect him to bring credit to the mop brigade. Just one warning, Cullen: be careful what you do now, because some of your buttons will have changed. Confession: The very first admin action I took was to delete a page by accident; I hadn't noticed that the default Speedy action on Twinkle had changed from "tag" to "delete". Oops! --MelanieN (talk) 19:47, 23 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

welcome to the mop corps

Congratulations on your successful RFA!
It's your turn to hear what the puppy told me after my RFA passed –
ten long, sordid, everybody-wishes-I-would-shut-up-about-this years ago:
  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version. (I got nothing here. It's inevitable. I'd be shocked if you haven't done it already.)
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. Without exception, you will pick the wrong one to do. (See #5.)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll. (You'll attract many more of those now, because mop. They must like to drink the dirty water in the bucket.)
  4. Use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block, because really, what else is there to live for?
  5. Remember that when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology.
It will not be a personal attack because we are admins and, therefore, we are all rouge anyway.
  6. Finally, remember to contact me if you ever need assistance, and I will do what I am able.

A cup of coffee for you!

Welcome to the mop corps, soldier. As you can tell by the barracks we are standing in, this is no cushy place for civilians to be. We've got lots of cleaning to do, soldier, and you're the newest recruit here on the team that does it. I don't know but I've been told, scrubbing latrines gets mighty old. Before you practice your mop-fu skills, though, have a cup of coffee for a much needed caffeine kick. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 21:40, 23 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
FWIW K6ka, I can tell you've never been a soldier, because soldiers capitalize Soldier. TimothyJosephWood 22:00, 23 July 2017 (UTC) [reply]
Or you're Canadian, in which case I can understand the lowercase. (Just joking. The Canadian military have been some of the most delightful people to work with in the times I've had the opportunity.) TimothyJosephWood 22:06, 23 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Timothyjosephwood: There's truth to that, actually. I was in air cadets, but air cadets are not members of the armed forces. So technically I've always been a civilian. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 22:26, 23 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Cullen ! If you can remember I have asked a question from you at RfA and even before you replied I have voted strong support. I always believed you are a great contributor and a blessing to the Wikipedia. I hope you will be the best sysop too ! I had a request, can you please devote some of your time at Administrator notice board especially the BLP one, it is a very serious issue. If you have got some time would you please entertain the request at WP:PERM, especially the New page reviewers(NPP) one, as there are more than 16000 New page yet to be review. Requesting you to specially give tools to the good people who come to request NPP rights as many articles at the New pages feeds and backlog are yet to be reviewed. I had cleared some 300 plus pages since I got NPP rights ,I would have loved to clear entire backlog at NPP ,but as I use a small Android device to edit Wikipedia, it is quite difficult

Bit belated

congratulations on your remarkable RfA. It simply is a reflection on you as a real person that shines through the prism of "on line" that so many of us could discern, and voted accordingly. You are a kind, patient and wise man with immense WP and real life experience. You have helped many and been key in editor retention down the years. Often a simple kind word (I like the rather unfashionable word kind) makes all the difference between a confused/frustrated newbie going rogue or leaving, badmouthing WP in the real world, or them staying to become great contributors. You fully deserve it sir. Kind regards, Simon. Irondome (talk) 13:43, 24 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Article Assistance

Hello Jim!

Again, best congrats to you on your nomination! I'd like a bit of assistance on creating the article for musician and actress "Eliz Camacho". Artist has very reliable credibility sources, photos and references, verified social media accounts, current affairs and are accepted by many wiki editors. What is your suggestion? Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requested_articles/music/Performers,_bands_and_songwriters#A-L

Many Thanks! R3adyWrit3s (talk)R3adyWrit3s

  • (talk page stalker) Looking at the 10 or so "sources", none of those are reliable sources, and probably shouldn't be in that requested list at all. In particular, the blogs, IMDB and the google search. You can't use a google search as a reference. From my experience, the first thing you need to do is find at least TWO sources that are both reliable (meet WP:RS, so are mainstream publications) and where the coverage is significant, meaning the article does more than just mention the artist, and instead the article is all about that artist. Language doesn't matter. That is always the safest place to start because if you can't find that, then it won't survive a deletion discussion so you would be wasting your time writing anything at all. Teahouse for new admins

Hi, Cullen! Has your head stopped spinning yet? 0;-D I see that you asked me, is there a Teahouse for new administrators? But you asked it half-a-page above, buried amid all the congratulations, so I thought I'd better reply here at the bottom of the page where you can see it (and others can chime in). There is a help page, formerly called New Admin School, now called Wikipedia:Administrators' guide. That can be helpful in learning to use the tools, although it gets out of date (I had to make several corrections when I was a new admin hoping IT would teach ME instead of the other way around). It also links to pages where you can practice using the tools. There probably should be a central place to discuss adminship issues but as far as I know there isn't. The usual thing is for the new admin to simply ask for advice at the talk page of other admins you trust to serve as a kind of mentor. This is a way to get connected with admin thinking on the judgment calls, like when to protect pages and for how long, or when to block and for how long. I'd be glad to serve as one of those people on issues where I am competent (which does not include everything admins do, even now). Any stalkers here have any suggestions of a more general place for admins to ask questions and (if necessary) blow off steam? --MelanieN (talk) 16:21, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The most important piece of advice I can give is, "you are not indispensable". Any action you're not sure of, leave it for someone else to do—there is literally no circumstance where the admin taking the decision needs to be you, and if you're unsure of anything, it's a lot better for all involved to let someone else make the decision.
The admin area I always recommend a new admin start off in is CAT:EX. It's generally backlogged so there's usually something to do, most of the decisions are uncontroversial as everything in there has by definition had a week to be contested if it's actually contestable, and it will provoke a steady stream of complaints from well-intentioned newbies on your userpage which provides good practice for the "politely explaining policy" aspect of adminship. (Just don't be afraid to refuse to delete articles if you think they're worth keeping, even though it will always provoke complaints.) Steer clear of blocking and protection until you're more well-established—while deletion gets the publicity, it's actually probably the least contentious of the three main admin areas. ‑ Iridescent 17:05, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Good advice by both of you. Deletion is the easiest to reverse. It's hard to reverse a block, as the damage is already done. WP:RFPP is another good place to start. You might also consider adding some helper scripts. My common.js has several. Some are editor only, but the MfD and AfD scripts are a must, the CSD script is also handy. Feel free to email or ping me here if you have a question. And yes, the admin school is very good, but you will never stop learning, there is too much to master here. Dennis Brown - 17:47, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yunshui has a pretty good to-do list that I leech off of help with: User:Yunshui/To_do Writ Keeper  17:50, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
One other bit of advice: don't feel you HAVE to do any of the usual admin things to earn your mop. You said a main reason for asking for the tools was so you could view deleted articles and respond to questions about them, and that is also a much-needed service here. As Iridescent said, there are lots of other people doing this stuff. BTW one piece of advice about RFPP, which is my favorite (it's about the only admin action for which you get thanked): on every occasion before you start patrolling there, look at the history to see if there is any OTHER admin also actively patrolling. If there is, go away and do something else, so you don't edit-conflict. --MelanieN (talk) 18:07, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much, MelanieN, Iridescent, Writ Keeper and Dennis Brown. I really appreciate all of the advice. Yes, the head spinning has died down a bit. I spent a couple of days thanking 315 people and responding to the wonderful comments and bad jokes that flooded my talk page and my Facebook page. And I am in the midst of six solid days of challenging work IRL. I am self employed which means that my boss is a harsh taskmaster. At least I am making very good money this week.
The Teahouse for new administrators comment was a wistful joke, of course. I know that there are many excellent administrators that I can turn to for advice. And I will.
I have had a page for a while called User:Cullen328/Tools and I will be adding links to it as I learn about various things. I have begun studying the Administrators' guide. And I was easily able to read some deleted hateful talk page content, which enabled me to give a more informed response to an editor. So, it begins. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 01:11, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I will second (or fifth) the suggestion that deletion and RfPP are good starting points. I pretty much stuck to CSD and page protection when I fist got the bit. I suggest avoiding the drama boards and similar type places where you may have to lower the boom on people. I still try very hard avoid ANI which I have always hated. That said sometimes things will just land in your lap and you will be that guy on the spot. When I went to RfA I had this insanely naive idea that I was going to be the first admin to get through six months w/o blocking anyone. Alas I don't think I made it through 24 hrs. As it happened I was working through the CSD log and blundered onto a G10 attack page that was just crazy over the top. Naturally I made it go away but then I realized that there was no way I could ignore the author and I'd have been ashamed to refer such an obvious troll to another admin. So much for fantasy land. Just take it one day at a time and don't be afraid to ask questions. You are one of the most level headed people I know on here. I don't see you blowing up the wiki. -Ad Orientem (talk) 02:13, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If you like the to-do list, you'll love my list of favourite tools... there are a few handy admin things there. And I believe I neglected to welcome you to the cabal corps myself - congratulations; I'm extremely glad you made the cut (as if there was ever any doubt!). Yunshui  07:49, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

My first request of Adm Jim!

Hi, and congrats again. Since you have more experience at the Teahouse than any other admin, I thought I'd bring this problem to you. If you take a look at WP:TH#To change username, you will see a reply there that "appears" to be from an IP. (Less than optimal advise, but that's another issue.) That "IP" is actually registered user 2422889236x. Isn't that a violation of username policy? Thanks in advance for whatever you think the best thing to do! Peace! John from Idegon (talk) 19:53, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, John from Idegon. My tentative opinion is that username is suboptimal but probably not a policy violation. If it was interspersed with periods or colons, it would look much more like an IP address. If you want a more definitive answer, please ask one of the active administrators at WP:UAA. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 20:54, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Jim. I guess I misstated my problem. His signature is an IP address. I'll slide over to UAA and see if anyone is at home. John from Idegon (talk) 20:56, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I see what you mean now, John from Idegon. That signature is definitely misleading. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 21:02, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've contacted Alexf per your advise above. I've already discussed his sub-optimal response with him and politely asked him to hold off answering any more Teahouse questions until he has more experience. John from Idegon (talk) 21:11, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
John from Idegon, I have left a message on the editor's talk page, asking them to change their signature. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 00:27, 27 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

My first request to mediator Jim

Remember my RfA question? Please look at Duruflé's Requiem and try to focus the parties to the question at hand. I tried to talk to the IP on one of the numbers. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:48, 31 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Gerda Arendt. I am sorry but I do not think that I can be helpful in that out-of-control conversation. I suspect that ArbCom will eventually have to issue some strong and sweeping sanctions regarding infoboxes. My friendly and entirely optional suggestion to you is to have nothing whatsoever to do with infobox debates. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:59, 31 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have nothing to do with infoboxes debates, that's why I ask you ;) - A friend has been called a "nasty individual", that has nothing to do with infoboxes. ANI would be the next step, which I have never done, but consider in this case. It's not without irony that my friend is just EotW ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:12, 31 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Forgive me one more question: are you saying that if it wasn't about an infobox, you would give some advice to an IP who goes against 5 established users (four of whom women)? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:55, 31 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) I realise I'm a simple man, but you've asserted you have nothing to do with infoboxes, yet in your last two posts here you have mentioned the word three times. Cullen's right, we've got to just ignore all of this (and by that I mean that if somebody reverts an infobox, you do nothing, don't save a diff of it, don't mention it on anyone else's talk, nothing at all) and get on with writing articles - avoid the Parkinson's bicycle shed effect. I do like the articles you write here Gerda, but some of the discussion here seems to be technically indistinguishable from trolling at times. Sorry. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 19:20, 31 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I never said that I have nothing to do with infoboxes. I said that I (usually) have nothing to do with infobox debates, stress on debates. There are two exceptions: RfC, and this case, where I was reverted like a vandal, and asked the IP (on the article talk and the first of five IP talks) if it was a misclick. I will not do it again, waste of time even that. Normally, when I'm reverted (which doesn't happen often), I leave the talk to others. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:34, 31 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
At least you don't get accused of "admin abuse" when you revert someone ;-) By the way, to answer a question you posted elsewhere, a "blot" on something is something undesirable or unpleasant. For example (to take an article I'm working on) : "The original Waterloo station was a blot on the local area, with rundown properties, disease and prostitution, and its demolition and rebuilding was welcomed". Or something like that. Nothing to do with the Belgian blues band Blue Blot. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 19:41, 31 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) I don't revert, period, - not an infobox at least. I do revert vandalism, and I know the difference ;) - I just read the 2016 debate again, and really smiled in the end, - Voceditenore has a wonderful way of wording.
Thanks for the word? So this is a blot? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:57, 31 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It seems that I must narrow and focus the language of my recommendation to you, Gerda Arendt. I withdraw the word "debate". I really and truly believe that you should have nothing whatsoever to do with infoboxes. This is my recommendation to you, speaking as a fellow editor and as a new administrator. Do not propose infoboxes, do not ask questions about infoboxes at RfA, do not discuss infoboxes with other editors, do not complain about other editor's conduct regarding infoboxes, do not allude to or hint at infoboxes, and conduct yourself as if infoboxes did not exist. Please, it is my sincere opinion that nothing good whatsoever will come to you or this project if you continue any involvement with infoboxes. Please stop it. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 01:52, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
This is a topic ban in so many words. Can I ask why? For the record, the only time I've been involved with this (seemingly of enormous importance!) issue of infobox usefulness is when I was recently bot-invited to an RfC. But to one thing I can attest: Gerd Arendt's comments and complaints about a specific individual's entirely uncivil comportment are entirely legitimate and, from where I stand, far more important than infoboxes. If Wikipedia is to stay this admirable place of collaborative effort, our focus should be on maintaining a good working environment here. Take care. -The Gnome (talk) 03:34, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
No, I am sorry but you are incorrect, The Gnome. This is not a topic ban. I am describing my personal opinions and beliefs about this matter, and am not taking any administrative action. Gerda Arendt brought this matter to my attention, and I have expressed my sincere opinion, making it clear from the beginning that my suggestion is entirely optional. I have expressed similar opinions to Gerda several times in the past, before I became an administrator. The incivility on that talk page is coming from several editors and flying in all directions. Everyone involved should desist. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 04:26, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Jim, I heard the advice before. I can live with it if you tell those on the other side the very same thing, - I came for mediation. I told Ritchie that the infobox wars were over on 24 March, when the piano concerto appeared, setting a quality standard for classical musical compositions (not composers). - We had several peaceful months since, but now I see new flames which I would like to see extinguished. I understand that you don't want to help, and that al reasonable people avoid the topic ;) - I do my work In memory of Viva-Verdi. Gnome, you may not have heard of him. He added infoboxes to all Verdi Operas, a topic he knew better than anybody else on Wikipedia. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:12, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Gerda Arendt, every time I have commented in general on infoboxes, I have criticized both advocates and opponents equally. I will continue to do so. I consider the whole matter to be one of the most useless wastes of time on Wikipedia, but a lot of editors feel passionate about this ongoing battle, for reasons that completely evade me. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:23, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Jim how are you. One thing struck me that you said. You were greeted when you first started editing in a friendly and helpful way this made you feel good and today you are very successful at Wikipedia and enjoy your editing here. My experience has been quite different. From day one last year I have been badgered, bullied, threatened, insulted, called a vandal you name it. Simply for editing in facts with plenty of proper RS. Let me give you a seasoned experienced editor a problem and you tell me the right way that you would go about handling it. The article is about a football Coach X who takes over a long suffering poor club and puts together an impressive 8 year record, winning three super bowls and finishing with a superb 98-30 record. Now what if the prior fired Coach Y writes an autobiography stating that he engineered the turnaround even though his record was terrible. He set the record for the most losses in league history, but then in his last season won a few games. The Wikipedia entry (for coach X) goes like this: Under Coach Y's leadership the team improved more rapidly and dramatically than anytime in league history, further the amazing turnaround and super bowl run began under coach Y. At the same time the editor adds commentary deriding coach X and saying he was just lucky.

Now you simply try to add to all this effusive praise of coach Y the fact that he also lost the most games in league history one year for balance and context THEY REVERT YOU

You simply add the effusive praise is "according to coach Y's autobiography" THEY REVERT YOU

You add a little credit for coach X's great work THEY REVERT YOU

You try a lot of different edit approaches to this problem THEY REVERT YOU ENTIRELY each time

Now keep in mind you have been using the talk pages extensively for a year, there is a small but determined group against you representing a minority opinion, they will not budge. You are friendly to them and they deride you. You have a ton of proper RS for the mainstream viewpoint and these guys are using the autobiography as their source. You have gotten support from passersby on the talk page but are not organized.

Do you just quit and leave the incorrect info to stand in Wikipedia?

I would be interested to honestly hear how you would handle this.Aceruss (talk) 03:35, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Aceruss. If I was you, I would start by addressing the issue of edit warring. I got one mild warning about edit warring in my early days of editing, read the policy, and never, ever, ever engaged in that behavior again. Then, if I was you, when I was talking about Rudy Giuliani and David Dinkins, I would state that clearly, instead of spinning a parable about football coaches. That seems disingenuous to me. If I was in a protracted content dispute on a specific article or pair of articles, I would seriously consider moving on and forgetting those articles. Personally, I consider a strong focus on a handful of articles to be incompatible with long term happiness as an encyclopedia editor. Let me say at this point that I have not looked at the underlying issue. I am answering in general. I believe that it is counterproductive to try to assign credit or blame to individual politicians for decreases or increases in local crime rates. Far better to discuss the full range of sociological and criminological factors that affect crime rates over decades. But that hard work is no fun. If I really felt strongly about such a specific article, I would utilize dispute resolution. I certainly would not engage in edit warring behavior. Fair enough. I proposed a fair resolution to the editor who lodged the dispute after reading his response. Hopefully we can work it out and that will be that. If not perhaps I will use dispute resolution in the future. I was not familiar with its workings. Take careAceruss (talk) 05:35, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
