Instructions

Using a DYK suggestion string (see below examples), list new suggestions in the candidate entries section below under the date the article was created or the expansion began (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged. Thanks for participating and please remember to check back for comments on your nomination.

DYK criteria

Official criteria: DYK rules and additional guidelines

Sample DYK suggestion strings

Please use one of the strings below to post your DYK nomination, using the "author" and "nominator" fields to identify the users who should receive credit for their contributions if the hook is featured on the main page.

  1. Nom without image:
  2. Nom with image:
To include more than one new or expanded article in a single hook: |article2= |article3= |article4= | (etc)
To include more than one author: |author2= |author3= | (etc)
To include alternate hooks: |ALT1= |ALT2= | (etc)
    To add a comment: |comment=
To add the article you reviewed: |reviewed=

Do not wikilink the article title, or the author username field; the template will wikilink them automatically. Do wikilink the article title in the hook field, however.
Do not add a section heading if you are using the template; the template will add one for you.
Do not include a signature (~~~~) after the template.
Do not use non-free images in your hook suggestion.

An example of how to use the template is given below:

  • Note that you should only use one of the above templates for the original hook. If you want to suggest a second, alternative hook for the same article submission, just type it in manually. The above templates output useful code for each submission and if you employ them for alternative hooks, you will mess up the page formatting.
  • When saving your suggestion, please add the name of the suggested article to your edit summary.
  • Please check back for comments on your nomination. Responding to reasonable objections will help ensure that your article is listed.
  • If you nominate someone else's article, you can use to notify them. Usage: Thanks, ~~~~

Symbols

If you want to confirm that an article is ready to be placed on a later update, or that there is an issue with the article or hook, you may use the following symbols (optional) to point the issues out:

Symbol Code DYK Ready? Description
Yes No problems, ready for DYK
Yes Article is ready for DYK, with a foreign-language or offline hook reference accepted in good faith
Query DYK eligibility requires that an issue be addressed. Notify nominator with
Maybe DYK eligibility requires additional work. Notify nominator with
No Article is either completely ineligible, or else requires considerable work before becoming eligible

Please consider using on the user's talk page, in case they do not notice if there is an issue.

Backlogged?

This page often seems to be backlogged. If the DYK template has not been updated for substantially more than 6 hours, it may be useful to attract the attention of one of the administrators who regularly updates the template. See the page Wikipedia:Did you know/Admins for a list of administrators who have volunteered to help with this project.

Where is my hook?

If you can't find the hook you submitted to this page, in most cases it means your article has been approved and is in the queue for display on the main page. You can check whether your hook has been moved to the queue by reviewing the queue listings.

If your hook is not in the queue or already on the main page, it has probably been deleted. Deletion occurs if the hook is more than about eight days old and has unresolved issues for which any discussion has gone stale. If you think your hook has been unfairly deleted, you can query its deletion on the discussion page, but as a general rule deleted hooks will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

The whole article is written based on a couple of pages in the book published by the Government of India. In such a case, even if I am to add inline citations for each and every claim in the article, it will probably be from the same source-RavichandarMy coffee shop 15:41, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • No, now it doesn't make sense. He was mainly known for being a judge rather than a barrister, and both judges and barristers have rooms referred to as "chambers". As such it is important to clarify that it was while he was a barrister rather than while he was a judge to avoid confusion on the part of the reader. Ironholds (talk) 17:41, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sorry, I didn't mean to change the meaning, but I misinterpreted the hook, and I think others could get as lost as I did. You meant "while a barrister" to modify "Henry McCardie", but I misinterpreted "while" as introducing a major subordinate clause "a barrister, Henry McCardie, often worked so late into the night that his chambers were nicknamed 'the lighthouse'". Then I got lost because there was no way to attach that imaginary clause to the rest of the sentence; or in non-grammatical terms, while he worked so late that his chambers were nicknamed "the lighthouse", what else happened while that was happening? So how about "Henry McCardie, as a barrister, ..."? Art LaPella (talk) 03:05, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, I don't know, but I don't think you can fit this in the timeframe by any stretch of the rules. What did the article look like when it was first deleted or userspaced? Grsz11 04:18, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It is a 14.5x expansion from when it was userfied.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 07:21, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Upon further consideration, it seems to meet all the criteria date wise and notability wise based on having been userfied. It's a timely topic and I think it's an interesting article subject. Kudos to its creators. ChildofMidnight (talk) 07:35, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Do publications like the NY Times do these comparisons for every new US President? This is therefore an uninteresting hook. BTW, "(Obama pictured)" needs to be changed. Mr & Mrs Obama as well as many other people are pictured. --74.13.125.218 (talk) 16:31, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It passed WP:DRV 8–2 after some content addition. Regardless of the fact that we can not be sure of day 100 before putting this on the main page about 10 weeks early, we must make a decision now. • I think the word "attended" suggests that Abbott attended Lincoln as a physician, but neither of the sources supports that idea. The DCB says: "Among the select group who stood vigil over the dying President Abraham Lincoln in April 1865, he was later presented by Mary Todd Lincoln with a shawl her husband had worn to his first inauguration." - I suggest rewording the hook. Length and history verified. Awadewit (talk) 12:26, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This story was interesting enough to get me poking around this morning, and there do seem to be at least a few references that refer to Abbott as serving a medical function at Lincoln's deathbed. In the book Lincoln in The Times: The Life of Abraham Lincoln, as Originally Reported in the New York Times by David Herbert Donald and Harold Holzer (Macmillan 2005), ISBN 9780312349196, there is mention on p.252 (Google Books excerpt here) that Abbott was the one keeping the "minutes" (his pulse, respiration, etc.) I'll add this cite to the page unless others think it's not germane.--Arxiloxos (talk) 15:14, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Might as well add that reference please and keep the hook as is. --Boston (talk) 05:32, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Length and reference verified (reference barely passes WP:RS since it's expressing an opinion rather than fact) but 1) this is not a compelling hook and 2) it mis-states the source. The source did not describe the bracelet as a "bondage accessory". It described it as "look[ing] a bit like a bondage accessory". There's a difference. You have some characters to play with in the hook (currently 121) but I'm wondering if there isn't something more interesting that could be said about the subject? Otto4711 (talk) 22:15, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Changed wording, but I disagree, I think it is a compelling hook. It is off the wall and unexpected for something that you would expect from a company such as the WPT.---I'm Spartacus! The artist formerly known as Balloonman 22:06, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm delighted to see Cappy get a better article. I'd suggest adding the word "basketball" somewhere, and to make up for this you could delete "trademark" since you're already mentioning that he was known for the weave, and condense in a few other places. So how about:
ALT: ... that "Cappy" Cappon, known for his "five-man weave" basketball offense, was mentor to Princeton athletes from the 1930s to the 1960s, including Bill Bradley and Frank Deford? --Arxiloxos (talk) 22:33, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I know the word. Why do you call that arcane? That's a journalist's POV. All rules are equally presented in a rulebook. More info on this is needed in the article to explain what "arcane/obscure" rule it was. --74.13.125.218 (talk) 12:20, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This fact comes from page 84 and 85 of Wang Zhongshu's Han Civilization (1982). Translated by K.C. Chang and Collaborators. New Haven and London: Yale University Press. ISBN 0300027230.
Alright then; this new reduction should be sufficient. Although I'd like more detail, I'm much more interested in passing this as a DYK.--Pericles of AthensTalk 09:22, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You still around? The new version is acceptable, no?--Pericles of AthensTalk 23:30, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I do basic proofreading, not approvals. Those who do approvals usually wait until an article nears the bottom of the page. The deliberately vague rule is "about 200 characters". When a hook is only a little over 200, I don't say anything, but other editors often do. Art LaPella (talk) 01:15, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This fact comes from page 63 of Liu, Xinru's Ancient India and Ancient China: Trade and Religious Exchanges: AD 1–600 (1988). Delhi and New York: Oxford University Press. ISBN 019562050X.--Pericles of AthensTalk 19:48, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Comment It's a substantial new article, and well cited, but surely the title should be Economy of Han Dynasty China or Economy of China under the Han Dynasty? Looking at the new hook, it seems to me that merchants don't take goods to a dynasty, any more than a dynasty has an economy! Xn4 (talk) 09:31, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia must follow consensus of reliable sources; most sinologists refer to the Chinese empires as "dynasties". As flawed as that may be, that is how they are referred to.--Pericles of AthensTalk 18:38, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sinologists talk about China and nothing else, so just "Han Dynasty" would be fine. For the general reader of the main page of an encyclopedia, a little more context is needed. Suggest page title as Economy of China during the Han Dynasty. --74.13.125.218 (talk) 06:45, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This isn't exactly the best place for this discussion. This is a DYK talk page. Please, if you want to discuss this, move it to the article talk page.--Pericles of AthensTalk 17:42, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
But this determines how we wikify the hook! Anyhow, I suggest "... lacquerwares of China during the Han Dynasty..." or "... that Han Chinese lacquerwares..." and "... styrax and frankincense to China during the Han Dynasty...?". --74.13.125.218 (talk) 07:13, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Please do not add any more red links, it's giving me a headache just looking at them! Also, you still don't understand the meaning of the Han "dynasty"; "Han" is not the name of some sort of royal family (which is the Liu 劉 family in this case). "Han" is in reference to a specific political and geographic entity, the Kingdom of Han in Hanzhong (modern Shaanxi), which the Han Dynasty's name is derived from. Therefore, "Han Dynasty" and "Han Empire" are virtually synonymous terms. Case closed; there is no need to move this article and in fact, it will not be moved, since it conforms with other articles such as Economy of the Song Dynasty and Economy of the Ming Dynasty.--Pericles of AthensTalk 08:03, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
PericlesofAthens, I am Chinese. And the name of the country and the regime, in the place known as China, was "Han", "Song" and "Ming" in different eras, not "Han Dynasty", "Song Dynasty" and "Ming Dynasty". IMO, Economy of the Song Dynasty and Economy of the Ming Dynasty should be moved, too. Anyway, please consider my hook (ALT2). It comes with a picture more related to the "economy". --74.13.125.218 (talk) 16:13, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • I counted some 260 words in the original and some 1800 in the lastest version (incl. quote). It is entirely possible that I did not count so correctly, and I think my high count includes the references and templates. When I did the math at nomination time, I though I was at something like 4.5 times the earlier version, but hoped that the significant increase in references, from 2 to 18, would make up for that. If it doesn't, though luck. And I thought the hook was really cool. Thanks anyway. Drmies (talk) 18:31, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • The prosesize tool gives 4631/1163 = 4.0x. It doesn't count the block quote at the end, but it does count the poem near the start (which maybe should be a block quote). Some exceptional 4x expansions have been approved. This article is nice, but it has a few run-on sentences and the climbing section could have a more encyclopedic tone. I'll leave the final decision to the other DYK editors. Shubinator (talk) 19:09, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've reorganized one sentence that you might have thought was a run-on, and added a word or two (so maybe I'm at 4.1 now;)). If there are any run-ons I'd love to know (since I teach upper-level advanced grammar at a state university I'm interested in this stuff). I've also reorganized the 'people' section a bit. As for the climbing section, it's pretty heavily footnoted and I wouldn't consider it not encyclopedic enough, but that's a matter of taste/judgment perhaps. If it's good enough, great; if not, I'm moving on to the next stack in the archipelago. Well, I'll do that anyway. Drmies (talk) 22:13, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Once again, "run-on" doesn't mean "convoluted". "... no product of the American education system could have understood it" means "convoluted". "run-on" is described in the run-on sentence article, and you can't communicate with a grammar teacher when confusing the two. Art LaPella (talk) 06:17, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • I bow to your immensity, oh CoM... It IS indeed an island with birds on it! And they are tasty too: reportedly they ate porridge with penguin there. Oh, after CoM's expansions the article got a bit longer, with a better lead. nudge nudge... Drmies (talk) 00:58, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ha, I wish I could take credit for the box. Well, I could, but I'd be lying. What is the problem with the images? I really don't know what to do, and to my untrained eye they look fine. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 01:46, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    • It's on a site directed by Quintard Taylor, probably the leading authority on Washington state African American history. The article is used for simple, uncontroversial facts (what organizations he worked for; what political offices he held); this is the sort of thing it would be hard to get wrong. It's the kind of facts we would readily take from (for example) a newspaper profile. I believe nothing statedcited from that source in the article gets into the realm of the even mildly controversial, so I did not search for an unimpeachable source. I've seem most of these facts stated in a recent exhibit that has appeared at the Washington State Historical Museum and now at the Northwest African American History Museum, but there seems to be no catalogue for the exhibit, and museum wall texts don't seem like a convenient citation. - Jmabel | Talk 15:40, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • Nonetheless, I will look for further citation. - Jmabel | Talk 17:45, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've now added considerably more citation to the article. Unfortunately, so far I haven't found anything as synoptic as the article I originally used, and that article's cited sources are not available online. I've asked a librarian friend if she can help me track them down. I've now cited certainly reliable sources for the recall and appointment; I haven't found anything other than my original source that mentions his original unsuccessful 1969 run. For whatever it's worth, I've seen campaign literature from that run, but don't have it at hand to cite. Two such items can actually be seen in the background (to his right) in Commons:File:Harold Moss 07A.jpg. - Jmabel | Talk 23:18, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest a shortener hook of 185 characters:
  • Church of the East is a disambiguation page. That is, if a reader clicks it, he will have to guess which link will lead to a description of this church. After reading the article, I think it should be encoded as Church of the East. Is that right? Art LaPella (talk) 03:57, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Actually Yohannan Sulaqa splitted in two the Church of East: so to say that the true Church of East is the Chaldean Catholic Church is a POV and to say that it is the Assyrian Church of the East is a POV. I used Church of East to be NPOV. Anyway I've edited Article Church of the East and put as first meaning the Church before the splittings (that happened in 1553, 1681, 1830, 1968) so the problem is solved. (Comment) The length, creation history and ref for the chapel are fine. I'm undecided, though ... I feel a more interesting hook could be found. He worked on the old Wembley Stadium – an iconic, (inter?)nationally important structure. He also did some work at Roedean School and Lancing College, among others ([1], [2]). The school chapel doesn't seem to have any particularly noteworthy features as listed buildings go, certainly in comparison with Wembley. • Not necessarily. In parts perhaps, although that's more the table featuring her side projects that the opening prose counted for DYK or the article in general. There is one link to her website which actually includes a video of the not particularly controversial performance mentioned. The discography is equally heavily (if not more heavily) reliant on newspaper articles such as this and this and this, television shows such as this and this entry on the website of Snow Patrol who have absolutely no reason to be mentioning someone like Hannigan as they are not associated with her and are much more well-known than her. I also don't know what you mean about the personal blog in MySpace as I cannot recall using one. The link you've provided me with just leads to the general site which only features in the discography as an external link – I presume this wouldn't be a problem with musicians especially considering it has its own template. This is a very unexpected early review which seems to have been done in haste – I also was not informed of the problem on my talk page. I know what it's like to review so don't mean to be critical of reviewers but if I can pick this many holes in a point then something must surely be amiss somewhere? --➨♀♂Candlewicke ST # :) 19:33, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"sth"="something". Art LaPella (talk) 20:43, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can't think of a more catchy hook, after all she hasn't done anything exiting. Most people will probably have heard about Obama, but not many people outside Finland will have heard about Holmlund. Spiby 06:07, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Alt: ... that some members of the Finnish Left Alliance called for the resignation of Interior Minister Anne Holmlund after the Kauhajoki school shooting? Spiby 07:56, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I can't see this being supported in the references. Ref 2 is about a rather untrustworthy (500 respondents) poll, and ref 3 mentions only one Left Alliance politician. Punkmorten (talk) 10:16, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I added some more refs, though I'm sad to say I didn't save any newspapers from that period, there was quite a media storm. Alt 2: ... that some members of the Finnish Parliament called for the resignation of Interior Minister Anne Holmlund after the Kauhajoki school shooting? Spiby 16:07, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
To me that's a negative aspect of a living person. Daniel Case (talk) 16:08, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think that is a negative aspect, she stood by her decisions and decided not to leave, and her decision was supported by the other ministers. "The reality has to be faced." The purpose of DYK is not to face reality, but to highlight interesting things in new contents of the encyclopedia. Why would such (sad) reality be considered interesting enough to make a DYK hook? It's just an inconvenience to travel a long way to school. This is hardly an aspect of Jangipara one would want to highlight and post on the main page. --74.13.125.218 (talk) 06:47, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I reverted "college degree" back to "degree college" because Jangipara is an area, not an individual who could have a college degree. But the backlog surely isn't that bad? Does it not make more sense to include something which isn't breaking any rules as opposed to wasting more time and surely increasing the backlog by debating it? --➨♀♂Candlewicke ST # :) 20:33, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Adding a brief discussion of the forthcoming "Farewell to the Fairground" would seem in order, especially given the brief nature of the band's discography, and would alleviate some concerns about length and completeness. - Dravecky (talk) 15:03, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Articles created/expanded for St. Valentine's Day 2009 (February 14)

Articles & hooks about love, love songs, romance novels and their authors, chick flicks, chocolate and related cocoa products and their producers, neurochemistry of love, ... etc. are encouraged. Articles about any food (such as mushrooms!) believed to be aphrodisiacs, and hooks about cardiac surgery with a photo of a human heart, ... would be good as well. Biographies of people whose name is "Valentino", "Hart", "Love"... or sounds like "Cupid" might be okay, too. --PFHLai (talk)
