Panjshir (Persian: پنجشیر, literally "Five Lions", also spelled as Panjsher) is one of the thirty-four provinces of Afghanistan. Containing the Panjshir Valley, it was established from the Parwan Province in April 13, 2004. Its population is around 139,100, and its area is 3,610 square kilometers. Its capital is the town of Bazarak.

A NATO-ISAF Provincial Reconstruction Team is based in the province and is led by the U.S.[citation needed]

The major ethnic group in the province is Tajik, with some Hazaras, and a small number of Pashtuns, Nuristanis and Pashai.[1][2]
