Seeking to understand your comments
Richard, I saw your request for deletion and the codes WP:GNG and WP:NCORP. I appreciate that you and other volunteers work to keep Wikipedia the great tool and work that it is. I hope to contribute a lot more to Wikipedia after this, my first work. In particular, I aim to do more articles to ensure that the significant current and historical institutions, traditions, and place of New England and New Hampshire are able to be studied and known by people who choose to learn about them. Regarding the WP:NCORP, I read the guideline and it says “The scope of this guideline covers all groups of people organized together for a purpose with the exception of non-profit educational institutions, religions or sects, and sports teams.” The article is about a non-profit educational instituion. Regarding the WP:GNG, the article is about an institution that source says has almost 3000 alumni. It is well known by most people in New Hampshire and many in neighbouring states. It has sporting (sailing) teams that compete in sailing regattas in the entire eastern United States and so is known in sailing circles in much of the United States. I have found television coverage that is viewed across New England in the period 2010-2017. I have found newspaper articles from multiple publications within New Hampshire and national sailing magazine. When I look at many other Wikipedia articles, they seem to be perhaps less notable. “Notable” seems sometimes to equate to “urban” by virtue of the population of urban centers generating more media volume. However, when viewed on a per capita basis, some state-level insitutions in places like New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Delaware, North Dakota, Wyoming, Rhode Island, etc. I believe that rural institutions also deserve to be treated as notable or the world becomes one in which homogenization of culture and history around urban defintions and examples is the rule. Please therefore help me put this article into shape so that I can learn and improve things in my efforts going forward. - Alf Alphakilohotel (talk) 21:41, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Alf, firstly, to reassure you - Wikipedia does not (or certainly should not) treat rural organisations differently than urban ones. Nor do I doubt that the organisation in question here is well known among recreational sailors throughout the United States. That said, however, it is the existence of significant independent coverage that determines whether an article is notable (and therefore appropriate for a Wikipedia article). The sources in the article don't - to my eyes - meet this bar. For example: the website of the organisation isn't independent, and therefore isn't suitable, this source doesn't appear to mention the organisation at all, and the others simply attest to the organisation's existence. However, I am far from an expert in sailing, and I would recommend asking at the Sailing WikiProject for assistance in finding reliable, independent sources. The Teahouse may also be able to offer general assistance. Furthermore and in the interest of full disclosure, the deletion template I placed can be removed from the article by anyone (including you, the creator). That said, if the article isn't improved to meet Wikipedia guidelines, it may well be listed at articles for deletion for a full deletion debate. I hope this clears up some of your concerns - if you have any more questions please do ask. Richard0612 22:03, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
Invitation to the Portals WikiProject...
You are invited to join the effort to revitalize and improve the Portal system.
The Portals WikiProject was rebooted on April 17th, and is going strong. Sixty-six editors have joined so far, with more joining daily. We're having a blast, and excitement is high...
Our goal is to update, upgrade, and maintain portals.
In addition to working directly on portals, we are developing tools to make portals more dynamic (self-updating), and to make building and maintaining portals easier. We've finished two tools so far, with more to come. They are Template:Transclude lead excerpt and Template:Transclude random excerpt.
Discussions are underway about how to further upgrade portals, and what the portals of the future will be.
There are plenty of tasks (including WikiGnome tasks too).
With more to come.
We may even surprise ourselves and exceed all expectations. Who knows what we will be able to accomplish in what may become the biggest Wikicollaboration in years.
See ya at the WikiProject!
Sincerely, — The Transhumanist 06:49, 4 May 2018 (UTC)

Richard, you restored this content to the Barisan Nasional, and warned the new user Legendary Autism for removing it. Stating that the party's ideology is kleptocracy, corruption and cronyism was obviously vandalism to begin with, and certainly wasn't supported by the sources. Legendary Autism did quite right to remove it, though, being a new user, they failed to understand they should have left the sources, and should have reverted to an earlier version, which somebody else has now done. Did you actually look at the stuff you restored? Bishonen | talk 17:05, 11 May 2018 (UTC).
- How embarrassing. You are quite right - I obviously didn't look closely enough at the text! I can't explain how I didn't notice that the wording was blatant vandalism, I expect that I was operating too far on auto-pilot. I have apologised to the user in question, and this shall serve as an object lesson to me - fully investigate edits before taking any action; don't click buttons before you're sure of what is going on. Richard0612 13:18, 12 May 2018 (UTC)
- That's great, Richard. Thanks for the gracious answer! I do see you do a lot of useful stuff around the place; I guess you may simply have been going a bit fast on this occasion. Bishonen | talk 14:37, 12 May 2018 (UTC).
Foreign language source
Since you helped with the Teahouse Talkback template, I need to know how to label a source that is not English. I found nothing under the citation templates that helped with this. Under Toy Symphony I saw a source that appears to be German. The reference needed fixing anyway so I tried fixing the language when I was there, but it didn't show up.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 19:23, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
- And I went back to it when I found the advice about what to do. It turns out the English translation is there too.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 19:49, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
- I'm glad you managed to find an English language version of the source - foreign language sources are acceptable on Wikipedia, but only if no English sources can be found to support a claim in an article. If you do use a foreign-language source, add the
|language=
parameter to the cite template, putting the language code as the parameter value. Richard0612 20:14, 13 May 2018 (UTC)- I didn't find the source myself, but I was only fixing a reference that wasn't formatted right. Thanks.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 16:04, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

Thank you very much
The RfC discussion to eliminate portals was closed May 12, with the statement "There exists a strong consensus against deleting or even deprecating portals at this time." This was made possible because you and others came to the rescue. Thank you for speaking up.
By the way, the current issue of the Signpost features an article with interviews about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.
I'd also like to let you know that the Portals WikiProject is working hard to make sure your support of portals was not in vain. Toward that end, we have been working diligently to innovate portals, while building, updating, upgrading, and maintaining them. The project has grown to 80 members so far, and has become a beehive of activity.
Our two main goals at this time are to automate portals (in terms of refreshing, rotating, and selecting content), and to develop a one-page model in order to make obsolete and eliminate most of the 150,000 subpages from the portal namespace by migrating their functions to the portal base pages, using technologies such as selective transclusion. Please feel free to join in on any of the many threads of development at the WikiProject's talk page, or just stop by to see how we are doing. If you have any questions about portals or portal development, that is the best place to ask them.
If you would like to keep abreast of developments on portals, keep in mind that the project's members receive updates on their talk pages. The updates are also posted here, for your convenience.
Again, we can't thank you enough for your support of portals, and we hope to make you proud of your decision. Sincerely, — The Transhumanist 23:27, 26 May 2018 (UTC)

Hi. I declined your CSD request for Draft:BANAN; you nominated it for speedy deletion under the criteria of WP:CSD#G1, but that is for incomprehensible text or gibberish only, and the text written on the draft page is coherent. If you still believe it should be deleted, please select a more appropriate category. If you have any questions, please feel free to drop me a note on my talk page. Stephen! Coming... 11:33, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
- @Sjb72: That's fair enough - I did consider that, but criteria #2 of WP:NONSENSE, which G1 references states "Content that, while apparently intended to mean something, is so confusing that no reasonable person can be expected to make any sense of it. See word salad.". I thought that would apply given the content of the page is (just) textually coherent, but utterly devoid of any sense whatsoever. Noted for the future in any case. ƒirefly ( t · c · who? ) 12:04, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
HasteurBot's G13 code

- I had a thought, reading through the fustercluck on your current BRFA (which I totally appreciate you doing, btw), but do you think it would be possible to put in a second BRFA for the "notify creators of the soon-to-be-G13-eligible pages" task? They can bitch and moan about the relevant or applicability of the tag itself, but I think the notification is much more vital (especially from a "now people know" perspective), as well as less controversial. Vital article counts
Thanks for your work with developing a bot to count the number of vital articles in each section. I noticed that the bot does not count articles with no assessment icons on the list, nor does it add WikiProject assessment icons. See South Korean newspapers or canals for example. Can this be fixed? If not, that's fine as well, just that editors would have to add the icons manually to ensure that the articles are counted. feminist (talk) 05:02, 29 May 2018 (UTC)
- @Feminist: Hmmm it doesn't do that at the moment as it looks for the {{icon}} templates to help it work out what's an article and what isn't. For the moment, editors should manually add the template (it can be blank or unassessed), but I'll definitely look into fixing that. ƒirefly ( t · c · who? ) 07:45, 29 May 2018 (UTC)
- Good, I'll add them manually for now. I assume it's OK to leave it blank for the bot to assess? feminist (talk) 08:02, 29 May 2018 (UTC)

Speedy deletion contested: Camden Highline
Hello Firefly. I am just letting you know that I contested the speedy deletion of Camden Highline, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: The creator moved the article to a user page by mistake, I think. I have moved the article to article space and removed the speedy. Thank you. Eastmain (talk • contribs) 03:29, 15 June 2018 (UTC)
- @Eastmain: I realise that the user probably moved it there by mistake, but I'm not sure it belongs in mainspace. A draft of a substantially similar article has been rejected by AfC twice on the grounds that it's just a proposal that isn't notable before it actually exists (or, indeed, is even given the go-ahead). On that basis I thought that there was little point in keeping another draft of the same thing (with fewer sources than the AfC draft). ƒirefly ( t · c · who? ) 07:54, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

The file File:Vandalism breakdown.PNG has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Personal file, no foreseeable encyclopedic use
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.
Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Jon Kolbert (talk) 00:15, 23 January 2019 (UTC)

Please participate to the talk pages consultation
Hello
Our team at the Wikimedia Foundation is working on a project to improve the ease-of-use and productivity of wiki talk pages. As a Teahouse host, I can imagine you’ve run into challenges explaining talk pages to first-time participants.
We want all contributors to be able to talk to each other on the wikis – to ask questions, to resolve differences, to organize projects and to make decisions. Communication is essential for the depth and quality of our content, and the health of our communities. We're currently leading a global consultation on how to improve talk pages, and we're looking for people that can report on their experiences using (or helping other people to use) wiki talk pages. We'd like to invite you to participate in the consultation, and invite new users to join too.
We thank you in advance for your participation and your help.

Broken bot?
Hi Firely! It appears a bot you operate, Bot0612, may not be working to update symbols for vital articles. See, for instance, that Google Maps has not had its symbol updated, despite being listed as VA5 for a while. about John J. Ensminger page
Some serious accusations were posted by user Justlettersandnumbers. I attempted to remove these but Justlettersandnumbers immediately reposted them. Mr. Ensminger is a highly respected lawyer and emailed me immediately with a request to take his page down rather than have these accusations at the beginning of his web page. Thus I did as he requested. Hopefully something can be done about this as his page has been up for around ten years without any problem but at this time those accusations need to be removed.King.parker3 (talk) 17:44, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

resubmitted my Draft
Hello FireFly, you recently turned down my draft and I hope to have rectified it. Draft:Motion_RC. Using the Wiki materials and comparable companies own wiki pages like Horizon Hobby & HobbyKing I believe I have removed any wording in which it would read like an advertisement. Again, I started editing a few Radio-controlled aircraft like pages and was surprised this company wasn't able to be linked to like others. Burlman54 (talk) 23:01, 23 February 2021 (UTC)
- Hello! Thanks for improving the draft. I can't promise to re-review it, as it's probably best that a different reviewer looks at it with fresh eyes, but someone will get to it. There is a backlog unfortunately, but rest assured AfC will get to everything eventually. Thanks! ƒirefly ( t · c ) 10:05, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

Thank you, firefly, for reviewing my latest version of an article for Shannon Global Energy Solutions. I've been working on this for several months, including with other Wikipedia editors, so I'd very much appreciate your recommendations and/or advice as to how I might get the piece into a shape that merits publication. If I may ask and you have time to reply, what specifically did you find that could be improved upon? I'm happy to keep working on it. Thank you very much. Best to leave a summary, no? Bot Messages About Old Drafts
I have just started receiving messages again from User:FireflyBot about drafts that I may have moved five months ago. I was previously receiving similar messages from a different bot, but I think the bot had to be retired from service when the bot author tragically died from coronavirus. So my question is simply: Did you just start operating the bot to give users notice that their drafts have been inactive for five months? If so, okay. I will ignore the messages unless you tell me of a way to turn them off. These seem to be drafts that I moved/renamed in the AFC review process, and I am not the real author of the drafts and have little interest in being told that they are about to go away.
However, thank you for managing a bot that provides a slightly useful service. Robert McClenon (talk) 18:18, 24 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Robert McClenon: Hello! I've taken over the task - as you say, giving users a heads-up about G13 - but using my own code, for what it's worth. I am entirely happy to exclude you from notifications if they serve no purpose. :) ƒirefly ( t · c ) 18:29, 24 February 2021 (UTC)
- If your bot has an exclude list of people who don't want the notifications, I don't want them. I move (rename) a lot of drafts, and, as a result, I may appear to be the author of the drafts. If I actually create a draft, I will usually deal with it in less than five months. So if you can put me on an exclude list, thank you. Robert McClenon (talk) 19:12, 24 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Robert McClenon: this is now Done. ƒirefly ( t · c ) 14:24, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks. You may get similar requests from other AFC reviewers, or they may just ignore these reminders. I move a lot of drafts in the process of reviewing them, which makes me be seen as a creator of the drafts, but I have very little interest in whether they go into the G13 bit bucket. Robert McClenon (talk) 16:34, 26 February 2021 (UTC)

Drafts on external website
Hi Firefly, Thanks for letting me know that Draft:Lucina Kathmann will be deleted. I'm wondering why it has been taken to https://w-i-k-i-t-i-a.com/wiki/Lucina_Kathmann--just being curious. 1001Bookworm (talk)
- @1001Bookworm: I can’t access that site - I get a DNS resolution error. Even if I could however, Wikipedia has no control over external sites, there are lots of sites that blindly mirror Wikipedia content (even drafts!) automatically. ƒirefly ( t · c ) 21:17, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
@Firefly 🔥 Thanks for your prompt response. I hyphenated the word "w-i-k-i-t-i-a" between the letters. otherwise, the page didn't allow me to post my message.
1001Bookworm (talk)
- @1001Bookworm: Ah I see - yes it seems that site sources content from Wikipedia. It’s not associated with Wikipedia or the WMF. Odd, but ultimately not our problem! ƒirefly ( t · c ) 21:29, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
@Firefly 🔥 Thanks for checking. I’ve done a few entries for Wikipedia, which aren’t at w-i-k-i-t-i-a but this one even it’s just a draft. I’ve heard that someone at w-i-k-i-t-i-a steals some articles from Wikipedia to sell them for money. Can you guys from Wikipedia ask this draft to be removed at w-i-k-i-t-i-a ? I’ve volunteered for Wikipedia and don’t want my copyright to be violated. Your time and attention are very much appreciated. 1001Bookworm (talk)
- @1001Bookworm: ‘your copyright’ isn’t being violated by someone copying content you have submitted to Wikipedia for use elsewhere, as all contributors to Wikipedia agree to release their contributions under the CC BY-SA 3.0 and GFDL licenses (see WP:REUSE). As long as Wikitia uses compatible licenses for its content, it is free to reuse text from Wikipedia. They appear to use CC BY-SA, so that appears to be fine. Even if they didn’t do this correctly, that would ultimately be for the WMF’s lawyers to deal with if they chose to do so. We (as in Wikipedia volunteer contributors) have no power to do anything whatsoever in relation to external sites unfortunately. ƒirefly ( t · c ) 22:11, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
@Firefly 🔥 Thanks so much for your explanation and info. I’ve just learned a little bit about CC-BY-SA. According to CC-BY-SA. “An example notice, for an article that uses the Wikipedia article Metasyntactic variable under CC-BY-SA, might read as follows:
″This article uses material from the Wikipedia article <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metasyntactic_variable">"Metasyntactic_variable"</a>, which is released under the <a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/">Creative Commons Attribution-Share-Alike License 3.0</a>.″
I think w-i-k-i-t-i-a should at least let Wikipedia know or acknowledge that they copy the article from Wikipedia. When I looked at “Review History” on the w-i-k-i-t-i-a page, it says "curprev 19:38, 31 August 2020 NicoleOgoff talk contribs." It shows that NicoleOgoff “Created page”. I just hope you could tell your supervisor about this incident.
Thanks again!
- @1001Bookworm: I don't have a supervisor - I do not work for the WMF in any capacity. I am like you, a volunteer Wikipedia contributor. You're right that they should have a statement of the kind detailed on WP:REUSE, but as I said there is no way for we volunteers to enforce this. ƒirefly ( t · c ) 11:44, 4 March 2021 (UTC)
@Firefly 🔥 Thanks for letting me know. 1001Bookworm (talk)
Rewording of FireflyBot message
Hi, I wanted to suggest a change to the automated message generated by the FireflyBot which notifies users that an article they created in draft space is about to be deleted. Right now the bot announces "I just wanted to let you know that..." which to me sounds like it is a message generated by a person, which it isn't. Would you consider changing it to say something like, "This is an automated message generated by a bot to notify you that...."? Thank you for considering the request. A loose necktie (talk) 12:56, 7 March 2021 (UTC)
- @A loose necktie: Done - I've updated the message to clarify that it's being delivered by a bot. For what it's worth, I don't really have a strong opinion on this, given that the bot's talk page links here, so any questions will be directed to me - however changing it can't do any harm. ƒirefly ( t · c ) 14:07, 7 March 2021 (UTC)

Hi, Firefly,
Thank you so much for Firefly Bot, it's doing exactly what I had hoped for and stepping into the void left by Hasteur Bot last July. I wish I had made my Bot Request months ago!
I can't make a direct connection but I look at the daily G13 list and it's gone from about 200+ drafts a day to around 150 drafts a day which I think is due to messages left for draft creators alerting them to the fact that their drafts are going stale. Since the goal here is not to delete lots of old drafts but to get more drafts into better shape to be submitted to AFC, I think this is a win-win for everyone. Reminding editors of drafts they might have forgotten about means fewer drafts deleted, fewer requests for admins at WP:REFUND to restore deleted drafts and, hopefully, more quality articles. Thanks again for stepping up and creating this bot. It has made things better on the project. Liz Read! Talk! 01:16, 14 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Liz: I'm glad it's proving useful and reducing the backlogs at CAT:G13 and REFUND - ultimately that's what bots should do, make life easier for humans. :) ƒirefly ( t · c ) 11:08, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

ACC tool access request approved
Thank you for your interest in the account creation process. I have verified that you have signed the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information and approved your request.
You may now access the interface here. Before you begin handling requests, please ensure you have read and understood the account creation guide and username policy to familiarize yourself with the process.
Please subscribe yourself to the private ACC mailing list following the instructions on that page. I also advise that you also join us on IRC #wikipedia-en-accounts connect where a bot informs us when new account requests come in and you can get real time advice on how to handle requests.
Please note failure to correctly assess requests will result in suspension of tool access. Account creation is not a race, and each one should be handled diligently and thoroughly. Releasing personally identifying information (such as IP and email addresses), whether intentionally or unintentionally, is treated very seriously and will generally result in immediate suspension.
Currently you are allowed to create up to six accounts per day, and you won't be able to create an account with a similar name to that of another user; these requests are marked as "Flagged user needed" on the interface. However, if you reach the limit frequently, you can request the account creator permission at Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Account creator.
Please don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions. Thank you for participating in the account creation process. Again welcome! — JJMC89 (T·C) 04:35, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

Concern regarding Draft:Yudhishthira (Huna king) reply
Please do search for Yudhishthira (Huna king) on the internet and you will find a existing Wikipedia article on the subject. I created it because I was impatient. That was because the Draft had been declined. I was kinda inexperienced on Wikipedia, even though I had created some 5 articles by that time. I couldn't wait for some Wikipedia user to review it, so I didn't edit it. Instead, I created a separate article on the subject which did not include the problems the draft did. So I have deleted all the text in the draft now when I received your message. But I am experienced now and I don't make such silly mistakes anymore.

Draft deletion notice received
Hi
I am writing in for a clarification about the message I received on 02:05, 29 March 2021 (UTC) from the User @Fireflybot
I submitted my article for submission around five months back and it was showing as pending for review since then. In the mean while the number of total drafts in queue for review kept going up. I just received a response to my draft by User @Kashmorwiki dated 04:55, 19 March 2021 (UTC)
My question was that will the deadline for auto deletion of the draft be counted from the date of submission of the draft or from the time when the first review of the draft was received?
Ksonrexa (talk) 14:02, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
- Please ignore the message above. I have resolved this at my end.

Discontent Content Issue 1
Welcome, subscribers, to the inaugural Discontent Content newsletter! Discontent Content is a newsletter aiming to collate and improve Wikipedia articles in need of more eyes and hands to get them in shape. Its unique trimodal structure allows editors to work where they feel comfortable -- with stubs and starts needing to be brought to standard, mid-quality articles with Good or Featured potential, or quality-assessed articles needing help to maintain their status. Articles in this category are those that need to be brought up to a minimum quality standard. Some will be stubs; others will be longer articles that nonetheless have significant concerns putting them far below B- or C-class adequacy. This issue's Category 1 articles are:
Articles in this category, while in better current shape than Category 1, are still missing something. They have the potential to be truly high-quality content, and may have been at one point. With work, they can be brought up to dizzying heights. This issue's Category 2 articles are:
Articles in this category have been assessed through a content review process in the past, but may require work to be brought up to current GA/FA standard. Editors can help bring them to a level where the star or plus near their names can once again shine. This issue's Category 3 articles are:
Hello, wonderful people, and welcome to the very first Discontent Content! I'm glad you're here, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you can do. In future issues, I hope to use this section to brag about the achievements of subscribers -- so why not go do something worth bragging about? Article improvement initiatives have a long and storied history on this project, and I'm honoured to add myself to the list of people trying to find one that works. My perhaps quixotic goal here is to unify a few different issues -- the maintenance of old quality-assessed articles (GAs in particular) and the sheer length of the long left tail -- in one fell swoop. I'd be happy if this ended in something like another GA sweep; I'd be happier if it ended in another GA sweep where those GAs got kept. I'd be even happier than that if this resulted in the improvement of our worst articles, not just our best. I believe in the project, and I believe in what we can be. Most of all, I believe in you. Let's get out there and make this thing better. |

Best regards,
What was wrong with this suggestion?
I saw you just reverted my comment at the help desk without an edit summary. [[6]] Any reason? TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 19:03, 20 April 2021 (UTC)
- Apologies, that was a mis-click. I immediately self-reverted it. ƒirefly ( t · c ) 19:47, 20 April 2021 (UTC)
I saw that you added a BLP Prod tag to this page. I examined the history and saw that it had recently been substantially rewritten and all the references had been removed. I simply restored the version that included references. Generally, BLP Prod should only be used for recently created articles; articles with substantial history are more likely to simply be victims of vandalism. Best wishes. pburka (talk) 22:04, 20 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Pburka: Ah, thanks for fixing that, must've missed it. Apologies. ƒirefly ( t · c ) 06:37, 21 April 2021 (UTC)

Some notifications are sent to the wrong people
I recently got a notification from FireflyBot about a draft article that I didn't create. This is probably a bug: it should have been sent to the person who created the draft article. Jarble (talk) 15:44, 28 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Jarble: Sorry about that - that's a very rare edge case however. You were the original creator of the page (see here), however the redirect you created was then expanded into an article subsequently moved to Draftspace. I'll see if there's a way to catch these edge cases and prevent notifications... ƒirefly ( t · c ) 16:15, 28 April 2021 (UTC)
Question about copyright
Hi Firefly,
If I'm not mistaken, the Constitution of the International Arab Trade Union is within the public domain, as it was written originally in 1953. https://arabtradeunion.org/upload/constitution%20_eng.pdf
Is it still violating Wikipedia's copyright policy to post something in the public domain?
Thank you!
Jananteeni (talk) 09:39, 25 April 2021 (UTC) Jananteeni
- @Jananteeni: If something is in the public domain (and I've not checked that the document linked is in fact PD), then you can include text from it in Wikipedia. You should attribute the content with a suitable template. Thanks, ƒirefly ( t · c ) 16:17, 28 April 2021 (UTC)

Firefly bot
Hello, Firefly,
For some reason, every time I check User:SD0001/Bot activity monitor/Report, it says that Firefly Bot hasn't been active even though I see evidence every day of it posting G13 notices to user talk pages. Do you know why it doesn't appear active on the bot report? Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 04:12, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Liz: I think the bot's entry in the config file was wrong - I've corrected it and it should hopefully be picked up correctly now. Thanks, ƒirefly ( t · c ) 16:10, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
- Well, I just want the bot to get credit for all the good work it does! I love checking user talk pages and seeing that the bot has posted an early warning message to editors about their soon-to-be-stale drafts. I don't have evidence that it has decreased the number of drafts that get deleted but I have the feeling it has. Some editors just need a reminder that their draft is still out there. Liz Read! Public Oversight (United States)
Hi Firelfly. I would like to request userfication for my writeup, because it has tremendous worthwhile value to society. I need to improve it more, but it's just not easy because university libraries are closed due to the COVID-19 epidemic. I read up on userfication, and I think the article is prime for it. However, I don't know if notifying you is all I have to do. This is basic material, without salacious comments, and with straight up links to academic sources. Thanks for all your help. Bot left a message to the wrong user
The bot left me a message that a draft I created, Draft:Creating List of unarmed African Americans killed by law enforcement officers in the United States, had not been edited for five months and was about to be deleted.
I did not create this draft. Some other user created the draft at this title. I moved it to Draft:List of unarmed African Americans killed by law enforcement officers in the United States, where it was later moved to main article namespace. The only thing I have to do with the draft is this one move.
Can the bot somehow differentiate between creations of redirects from moves and creations of real drafts? JIP | Talk 23:50, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
- @JIP: Not exactly, however what I can do is prevent notifications for redirects where the only content is the creation of the redirect and the addition of AfC templates. That will prevent cases like this from recurring. firefly ( t · c ) 09:03, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

--- You reverted my change back to 350 mph. Please read up on typical landing and takeoff speeds for for any aircraft, 747, 737, even an f-18. They are nowhere near 350 mph. Cruising speed at altitude, yes, but not with the flaps down during takeoff and landing. I do not cite any source because any aircraft buff knows this as common knowledge. Besides, aircraft tires would disintegrate at that speed. You may revert your reversion at your leisure. This issue's reader suggestion from Sennecaster:
One topic I've been broadly thinking about lately is the concept of GA sweeps. There hasn't been one in well over a decade; discussion of a new one is traditionally stymied by the sheer number of GAs that would need sweeping, considering there are over ten times as many as there were at the last sweep. Nonetheless, there's no dispute that many GAs don't really count as 99.5th percentile articles, or even decent-quality articles (whether one's own personal reading of WIAGA is closer to the former or the latter, and how different those things are, is an exercise for the reader). I've been brainstorming ideas, and I've been wondering if we can tackle the problem with limited-scope sweeps. One idea would be sweeping popular or vital articles -- those that get enough views to make up a significant proportion of the "GA experience" to readers. Another would be focusing on shorter GAs, which might trend towards a less in-depth treatment of the topic than could really justify the rating. There may very well be a path here to maintaining GA standards, and either of those would have the benefit that they might be more likely to encourage people to work on rather than simply delist articles -- popular topics with lots of interested parties willing to help, or smaller topics that don't seem like too big a challenge to pick up.

FireflyBot
Is there any way that FireflyBot can distinguish between the person who created a draft, and the person who moved it into draftspace? I'm guessing not, but it wouldn't hurt to ask. I ask because of this. I dream of horses (Contribs) (Talk) 16:35, 20 June 2021 (UTC)
- I dream of horses, not really. I could skip any edits that indicate a move, but even then that wouldn't necessarily get the draft's actual author. What I can do, if you wish, is add you to the 'exclusions list' so that the bot skips leaving you messages. firefly ( t · c ) 06:16, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
- Oh, that's what I thought. I can just keep pinging the actual author on my talk page. No need to put me on a list. I dream of horses (Contribs) (Talk) 06:17, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
Process for nominating article for FAR
Great that you're considering investing some time in this. Thanks!
The instructions for nominating can be found here: Wikipedia:Featured article review. What I'd hope for with a bot:
A user would do something like:
- Place {{subst:FAR}} at the top of the talk page of the nominated article. Write "FAR listing" in the edit summary box. Click on "Publish changes". Here, some extra info (the diff of notification) will probs be user-input as the required talk-page notice is quite free-form.
- From the FAR template, click on the red "initiate the review" link.
- List the problems with the article.
A bot might help with:
- Remove entry from Wikipedia:Featured article review/notices given (not always guaranteed it’s on that list)
- Find out which users and projects to notify (nominators, if possibly contributors with > 15% authorship, listed WikiProjects)
- Notify said users and projects
- Place nomination on top of list of nominated article
- Put FAR in fourth column of article’s entry at Wikipedia:Unreviewed featured articles/2020 (not all articles on that list) FemkeMilene (talk) 16:26, 21 June 2021 (UTC)

ICAEW
Hello firefly, thank you for your feedback regarding my edits to the page, Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Institute_of_Chartered_Accountants_in_England_and_Wales
I work for the organisation in question, and my associated work email address has been registered to my Wikipedia profile for several years.
Does this not provide me with the authority to make updates to the page?
Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MrsThompsonSays (talk • contribs) 16:01, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
- MrsThompsonSays, if you work for the organisation you're writing about, and are therefore effectively paid to edit Wikipedia, you will need to disclose this in line with Wikipedia's policy on paid editing. Furthermore, regardless of whether you work for an organisation, Wikipedia cannot accept direct copy-pasting or close paraphrasing of copyrighted materials. Finally, Wikipedia does not work on the basis of 'authority' - every editor has equal 'right' to edit about any topic, so long as their edits are otherwise acceptable by policy. Maloca
I added new sources and expanded an article about malocas that was marked as lacking sources and a stub. These changes were undone by you on June 18th. It is now lacking sources and once again a stub. Can you explain why these changes were undone? It made the article better, more trustworthy and more informative. Thanks, l.
- @Loltardo: I reverted the addition because it constituted in large part a copyright violation of another website - namely this one. Wikipedia cannot accept text that would violate copyright. For more info, see our frequently asked questions about copyright page, or feel free to ask me here. Thanks! firefly ( t · c ) 16:39, 1 July 2021 (UTC)
Eddy Chen and Perfect pitch
Not sure if I’m doing this right but in reference to your edit July 7:
Hello, I'm Firefly. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, Absolute pitch, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at referencing for beginners. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. firefly ( t · c ) 11:28, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
You can reference their channel, the fact that Eddy has perfect pitch is well known among the violin community.

Here is another site with interviews referencing Eddys perfect pitch

Here is a link to one their videos including the reference to Eddys perfect pitch. They have 3 million people watching them that all know this to be fact. They’ve proven it many times. This is just one video referencing it.

Please fix this.

Deleted content question
Hello, I'm Firefly. I wanted to let you know that one or more external links you added to Gary Michael Berman have been removed because they seemed to be inappropriate for an encyclopedia. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page, or take a look at our guidelines about links. firefly ( t · c ) 14:31, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the message. I thought the links were helpful as they describe a fuller picture of this person, very helpful to those considering going into business or other dealings with him. Would it be acceptable if there were fewer links, such as two rather than four? ReadMoreAboutIt (talk) 15:20, 9 July 2021 (UTC) ReadMoreAboutIt (talk) 02:18, 10 July 2021 (UTC)
Deleted content
Hi Firefly Can you give me an answer to the question in the discussion ‘deleted content question’? I would like to have two of the deleted links put back into the Wikipedia page in question Thanks ReadMoreAboutIt (talk) 12:04, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
- ReadMoreAboutIt, hi, sorry, been a busy weekend. The issue wasn't the main links, but the adding/duplicating of links to "http://www.areretail.com/#!/" which appear to be irrelevant to the subject at hand. You are entirely free to add the other links back, they won't be a problem at all. firefly ( t · c ) 15:23, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
