State and bordering counties not apearing just the counties on a white background not a normal map 2601:246:CF00:CD60:D26:36F9:683F:9C95 (talk) 02:07, 16 June 2024 (UTC)

- Thanks for the example. It's the same issue as in #Infobox probelem. commons:User:David Benbennick uploaded a lot of SVG files with US county maps in 2006. They rendered correctly previously but not now. Many articles are still showing cached versions which render correctly but if they have to be generated again by MediaWiki then the may all fail. I have made a working version of commons::File:Map of Illinois highlighting Cook County.svg and uploaded it as commons:File:Map of Illinois highlighting Cook County corrected.svg. I used the suggested fix [1] by WelpThatWorked. I don't have permission to overwrite Commons files but there may also be hundreds or thousands of files to fix and I'm not doing that manually. This is just to show a possible fix. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:44, 16 June 2024 (UTC)

- Hi PrimeHunter, thanks for letting me know about the problem. And thanks for making a fix at Cook County corrected.svg.
- > I don't have permission to overwrite Commons files
- Oh no! "File overwriting not allowed. You attempted to overwrite a file that was not initially uploaded by you." That's new since 2006. It's a wiki, you should be able to edit images! Anyway, I see anyone can request "Autopatrol" rights at commons:Commons:Overwriting existing files/Requests.
- I went ahead and overwrote File:Map of Illinois highlighting Cook County.svg with your corrections.
- Are you (or anyone else on here) interested in running an upload bot to correct 3000 images? I don't know how to do that anymore since 2006. User:dbenbenn 10:33, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- I'm working on fixing the files (should be just a batch find/replace), then I'll look into the upload bot thing. WelpThatWorked (talk) 13:01, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- The problem is also discussed at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#SVG file not displaying correctly - Microsoft Edge and phab:T367645. The trigger was apparently that MediaWiki updated the used version of the external software librsvg. Since the affected SVG files are said to not follow the SVG standard, I doubt there will be a MediaWiki change to accept them. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:15, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- A request could be made at commons:Commons:Batch uploading. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:29, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- User:Nux has fixed many Alabama and New York counties but with another method which changes the bold state outline to the same as county borders, e.g. File:Map of Alabama highlighting Sumter County.svg. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:57, 17 June 2024 (UTC)

Political Candidate Article
I’m an unpaid volunteer for a Congressional campaign in West Virginia. Our candidate won the primary race and will be on the November ballot. The other candidate for the same Congressional seat has a Wikipedia article and it seemed in the public interest for our candidate to have one as well. As Thomas Jefferson wrote to Richard Prince on January 8, 1789, “… wherever the people are well informed they can be trusted with their own government.” (https://www.loc.gov/exhibits/jefferson/60.html)
With that in mind, I wrote the following draft:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Steven_Wendelin
This is my first Wikipedia article and the review I received tells me my submission is not adequately supported by reliable sources. I accept that as true. In the process of writing the article, I came to understand just how challenging it is. As such, I have no intention of becoming a regular Wikipedia contributor or reviewer. And I admire those who are.
So my question is this…
What’s the best way to get help editing the article I wrote to add the supporting citations needed?
Thank you. Jumpcutter (talk) 02:09, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
- I did looked over your draft that you linked. My only suggestion is that users will have different interests of what they want to edit and such. If you want this to be an actual article that lives on this Wikipedia, then it needs additional citations that are reliable and trustworthy.
- Here is information on citing sources: Wikipedia:Citing sources. Feel free to ask questions on citing or if you need help with citing here. Soafy234 (talk) 02:37, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, Jumpcutter. Steven Wendelin is running for Congress against Riley Moore who has previously served as an elected member of the West Virginia House of Delegates and is currently the elected West Virginia State Treasurer. There is widespread consensus among Wikipedia editors that elected state legislators and elected statewide officials are notable and therefore eligible for Wikipedia biographies. On the other hand, there is no such consensus for unelected candidates for office unless there is a strong case for notability outside of politics. Wendelin had a long career in the US Navy, retiring as a Commander, equivalent to Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army. There is no consensus or agreement that officers of this rank are eligible for Wikipedia articles except for extraordinary cases that generate significant coverage in reliable sources, and that does not seen to be the case for Wendelin. If he wins in November, he will certainly be eligible at that time. See WP:NPOLITICIAN for clarification. Cullen328 (talk) 08:04, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you Cullen328 for an excellent answer. That makes perfect sense to me. I appreciate your time and attention. Jumpcutter (talk) 22:31, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you Soafy234 for taking the time to review my article and for your recommendations. Time is our one truly non-renewable resource and I appreciate you sharing yours with me. Jumpcutter (talk) 22:30, 18 June 2024 (UTC)

Croatia European Union
Hello, I noticed that on your European Union wiki page says that there are 27 member states, which is not true, Croatia is the 28. state and has been since 2013. so therefore there are 28 states in the EU. Here is the page link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Union 2A00:1BB8:118:16F4:D0EC:9DD9:5E5A:3BCD (talk) 09:56, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
- I think you're mistaken here. Both the article Member state of the European Union and the EU's official website say there's 27. However, there were 28 member states before Brexit in 2020. '''[[User:CanonNi]]''' (talk • contribs) 10:05, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
- Maybe it changed when Britain left the EU, but here on the wiki page of Croatia, in the section: Independent Croatia (1991–present) the photo on the right says: Croatia became the 28th EU member country on 1 July 2013. Here is the full link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croatia 2A00:1BB8:118:16F4:D0EC:9DD9:5E5A:3BCD (talk) 10:15, 16 June 2024 (UTC)

- Croatia was the 28th country to join, that won't change- but the EU now has 27 members with the UK out. 331dot (talk) 22:33, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
Help: account issue
Hi, I just start to edit Wikipedia recently and been editing in both Vietnamese and English. However, it seems that my lack of understanding causes my Vietnamese account to be banned forever with just a few edit, while my English account is still going well. I've been trying to contact those who banned me for over a week but it seems like I couldn't reach any of the administrator. The contribution I made to Wikipedia is also my what I wanted to share on my portfolio. I really don't know what to do, please help. Chau Pham (Phạm Bảo Châu) (talk) 02:22, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hello @Chau Pham (Phạm Bảo Châu). Wikipedia is not a place for your portfolio. Please use social media for that. I suggest you read Wikipedia:Golden Rule in order to better understand what Wikipedia is about. Shantavira|feed me 07:12, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- I'm not quite sure I understand the issue with using Wikipedia for my portfolio. Could you please clarify what you mean? My intention in editing and writing articles on Wikipedia is driven by my interest in certain topics that I find impactful. After contributing, I include the pages I've worked on in my portfolio as evidence of my writing and research skills.
- For instance, I edited the article for the book "Anxious People" by Fredrik Backman, where I added information about the book's themes. My edits were not flagged, and I was proud of my contributions. I want to showcase my work on Wikipedia in my portfolio.
- Could you please help me understand which area of Wikipedia's guidelines I might have violated? Chau Pham (Phạm Bảo Châu) (talk) 07:33, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- Apologies @Shantavira, I've forgotten to mentioned you. I hope you understand that my message is purely intended to help me understand what I did wrong. Chau Pham (Phạm Bảo Châu) (talk) 07:43, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- If your issue is on the Vietnamese Wikipedia, you will need to deal with it there, using whatever process they have to do so- we can only help you with issues on the English Wikipedia. I can't speak to why they would have an issue with you telling about your edits on your user page(if that's what you did). 331dot (talk) 07:48, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- Oh okok, thank you @331dot for your help! Do you have any suggestion onto how to connecting with people there? I've been banned so emailing and submitting forms seems to be the only way I can reach them. However, I haven't seen any respond for over a week so I'm not sure what to do. - I can tell you that the Vietnamese guide to appealing a block is at this link. 331dot (talk) 07:55, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- I don’t know any Vietnamese, but the OP appears to have an open unblock request on xyr viWP user talk page (along with a couple of blank ones, which xe may wish to clean up). Best to be patient; I expect an admin will be reviewing it in due course.—Odysseus1479 07:23, 18 June 2024 (UTC)

References to newspaper or magazine clippings
Hi, I have read through the citation guidelines but cannot find a clear directive for the following.
I am working on an article and I have references that are clippings from magazines and newspapers supporting facts I am stating about the subject. These are old ( 30+ years and not online ) and in some cases I can attribute author, date and publication name but for others the author is unknown as they are truncated extracts (clippings) where only the date and name of the publication is known. If the reference were to be challenged, or required to be proven, I have no way of attaching the image of the clipping...what do I do?
Thank you for any assistance. Danjam607 (talk) 08:06, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- Newspapers.com I think would be worth trying for verification since you can make clippings there. Timur9008 (talk) 09:09, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you. Some are from publications not digitised on Newspapers.com but I will search. 122.150.142.187 (talk) 00:41, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Danjam607 Hello, and welcome to the Teahouse. WP:OFFLINE says basically that if your source is WP:RS, go ahead, add the info you have to your cites. See for example Skeeter Reece, which has some off-line cites. Can this be abused? Sure, but the default assumption is that you won't make stuff up, and that if you do, we'll be able to deal with it at some point. If you haven't, check archive.org, you never know.
- Noting also that if you stick around, you will get access to the WP:LIBRARY, which can be really helpful in cases like this. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:09, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- thank you, this helps greatly.I of course have images which I will provide if required. 122.150.142.187 (talk) 00:39, 18 June 2024 (UTC)

- Your post here said Ctegory:Organization founders and mentioned "the other categories" so it sounded like you were trying to link a category and somebody changed it to Category:Organization founders which is a category. Ctegory:Organization founders is not a category, it's a link to a non-exisitng Wikipedia article called "Ctegory:Organization founders". There is no reason to make such a link. If somebdoy does it in an article then the best fix is to change the obvious misspelling of "Category", assuming the article belongs in Category:Organization founders. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:37, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- I did edit it and another editor who seems to specialize in spending very little time on edits reverted it without fixing the obvious. Then when i posted it having been reverted asked about it and instead was criticized about posting some thing wrong. I dont know what the original poster of the link was attempting to do. All i know is that I attempted to correct it. So if the more "experienced" editors feel that it is their responsibility to go on a revertcampaign spending virtually seconds on a review i would suggest they think differently especially on something that on the face should be recognizable to an stablished editor to be wrong. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2603:8000:d300:3650:6c65:54ea:701d:78d (talk • contribs)

- Nothing more needs be done as the question has been answered. There never would have been a question if an over-zealous editor had not reverted an edit after spending virtually seconds looking it over. Sorry if I have burdened the situation having made too many edits. I assume that corrections are appreciated edits.2603:8000:D300:3650:6C65:54EA:701D:78D (talk) 20:37, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- The edit notice for this page says "Provide a link to the page you're asking about." You haven't burdened the situation by making too many edits but by concealing which edit or page you were posting about. We get many inaccurate posts from users who misunderstood something. I cannot judge whether the other editor did something wrong without seeing what they did. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:56, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- The question has been answered and publicly naming that person involved in the revert will not change the outcome. There is little to gain disclosing someone's foible yet not doing so earns someone the distinction of concealing information to judge. When another editor altered the posted question it confirmed that the revert should never have happened. A review of the time log showed mere seconds were used in review of the many reverts posted. No explanation is given justifying the revert. What would have been interesting is if a warning was issued by this editor calling attention to the use of the sandbox instead of direct article editing. Again, the question has been answered.2603:8000:D300:3650:6C65:54EA:701D:78D (talk) 07:02, 19 June 2024 (UTC)

Please advise me: I have drafted a page that I would like to have posted on wikipedia; I also have extensive citations that will, I believe, address verifiability questions. I would like to paste that page into my Draft Space; and then attach the citations which I have drafted correct in form, using the Wiki automation. Please advise. I have difficulty with wiki following all the different directions and names of things. So I need to keep it simple. Henrybardklein (talk) 19:06, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Henrybardklein. Your best bet is to use referencing in the visual editor by following the tutorial at WP:INTREFVE. This is a word-processor style interface, so not markup language, and likely much easier for you to use. Ensure that you Publish (akin to Save) often, so that any errors in your browser cache do not lead to your work being lost. Qcne (talk) 20:31, 17 June 2024 (UTC)

Complete list or create new surname page?
Hi, I'm a new editor just learning the basics. I stumbled upon the page Noro and realized it doesn't include Issei Noro, so I want to fix it by adding other people and places already on wikipedia to the list, since I have made some minor edits on other pages and it seems simple enough.
However, I realized that there are 10 people on wikipedia with that surname, and after looking at pages like Dauphin and Dauphin (surname) I thought that maybe I should create a new page for Noro (surname) instead and edit the Noro page accordingly, with a link to that new surname page. Which approach would be better? Thanks! Grunline (talk) 19:18, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- It's a judgement call. Personally, I would simply add "Issei Noro" into the existing "Noro" page. That's because the lists are small. "Dauphin" is a bigger dataset, and in that case I can see why it is two separate (although cross-referenced) lists. As you come across other Noro-related articles, simply add them also. This will help you gain experience, not only in the technicalities of doing the edit, but also the weighing up of things and decision-making. (On the other hand, if you already, at this stage, know that there are many tens of items to be added to (say) the surnames, you might decide to perform the split earlier rather than later.) Feline Hymnic (talk) 20:14, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- I understand. I will start with the existing Noro page for now and will see if I make the new page later. Thank you very much for your insight! Grunline (talk) 20:46, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
How do I find what Wiki pages need edits?
How do I find what Wiki pages need edits? I swear it was the log-in portal before but it has been awhile for me. I tried writing an article but I think I need more practice first by editing and learning how to get sources. WindowColorCenter (talk) 19:52, 17 June 2024 (UTC)

Marking an article as requiring revision
I stumbled over International Organization for Peace, Care and Relief and originally made some minor edits. I wanted to also fix some references still using old formatting and noticed that the iopcr.org page no longer seems to refer to this organization; I remember seeing an update needed edit note on some other pages but can't find the appropriate template. How would I find such a template (so far, I have tried looking at things like WP:OUTDATED, WP:Revision and similar guesses, but I'm not sure how to search). Namnatulco (talk) 20:20, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- Namnatulco, Wikipedia:Template index may be helpful. -- Hoary (talk) 21:24, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- To find the template for "update needed", a good starting point is to search for "Template:Update needed". The "Template:" at the beginning refers to the template namespace. As it happens, Template:Update needed exists, but if it didn't, the search page would show templates with similar titles. jlwoodwa (talk) 00:23, 20 June 2024 (UTC)

I'd like to upload a picture of a shipwreck to the page I am making
I'd like to upload a photo to the wikipedia article for Corveta Ipiranga V17. Do I need to fully ask permission from the people who took the picture (who I do not know)? Or is it suffice to cite their website for the picture? WindowColorCenter (talk) 23:42, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- The copyright holder has to inform Wikimedia Commons (directly, not via you) that they license the image via this or that (unusually permissive) copyleft license.. -- Hoary (talk) 23:46, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- Given that, is it best to contact the people who took the photograph or those hosting the website ? Some of the websites hosting images of the historical pictures I am looking for didn't take the pictures and those photographers and original sources. I'm afraid those photos may be obscured by time. They'd add a lot to the article. Any advice moving forward ? I just want to be sure I understand correctly. WindowColorCenter (talk) 01:51, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- The pictures aren't within mention of copyright holding if that matters WindowColorCenter (talk) 01:53, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- @WindowColorCenter: Based on the info at Draft:Corveta_Ipiranga_V17, the ship was built in 1953 and wrecked in 1983. Based on WP:COPYEXP, it will depend on the circumstances of the particular photo if it is freely available or not. I suggest asking at WP:MCQ and including details on which photos you are considering. That's where the copyright-knowledgable editors answer questions.
- For your other question, as to who to contact for permission, that will depend on who holds the copyright. Often it will be the photographer, but not always. RudolfRed (talk) 02:57, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you. I actually went and submitted the article already for review. Is it possible to add a picture later if it is approved? WindowColorCenter (talk) 03:03, 18 June 2024 (UTC)

- Thank you. I submitted the article however. If it is approved can I change that later? WindowColorCenter (talk) 02:24, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- @WindowColorCenter:, yes you can change it later. However, I would withdraw the submission, as your Draft is not ready for mainspace yet as there are various problems. For starters, the lead needs to be entirely rewritten. The lead should be a summary of the main points of the article, and should not contain unique information not already covered in more detail in the body. For an article of this length, your lead should probably be just one sentence, and the current first sentence is adequate for now. Everything after that should be part of the body of the article. There are other problems, but I would start with that. Mathglot (talk) 03:10, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- Oh cool. I found a few more issues after my submission. I didn't know I could withdraw an article. Totally thought it was set in stone from there, so really thank you so much for letting me know! As well as with the advice on the lead there. I really appreciate that you've taken the time to look over the draft and been so generous with helping me get on track as a new editor. Please let me know what the next step is for me to publish my article on Wikipedia.
Courtesy link: Draft:Ronald Thondickal
As a new user of wikipedia, after creating an article by one week, I get the option to move it to the main page. It now says my article is not ready for publishing and has been moved to draft space. What is the next step I will take to publish my first article.
Ref: RonaldThondickal Draft:Ronald Thondickal LegacitInfotech (talk) 05:11, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi LegacitInfotech, articles on Wikipedia are expected to have WP:Reliable sources, ideally ones which clearly demonstrate WP:Notability. These sources should contain the information presented in the article. It would also probably help if the article read less like an advertisement than the current draft does. CMD (talk) 05:17, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- Ronald Thondickal's journey from a small town in Kerala to becoming a key player in the global film distribution industry is a story of dedication, hard work, and passion for cinema. Et cetera. This is grossly promotional. If you want to promote this person, you're at the wrong website. -- Hoary (talk) 05:39, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- You have written your draft backwards. You need to read WP:BACKWARD, then discard all that unreferenced promotional text, and start again from the beginning. Maproom (talk) 10:04, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- Removed promotional language. Needs refs!! David notMD (talk) 10:52, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hwllo, Legacitinfotech, and welcome to the Teahouse and to Wikipedia. I'm afraid you are having a common experience for people who start editing Wikipedia and try the challenging task of creating an article before they have spent much time learning how wikipedia works. It is like having your first music lesson and booking a public recital, or taking up tennis and immediately entering a competition.
- I always advise new editors to spend at least a few weeks making edits to exizting articles and learning about such key concepts as verifiability, reliable sources, neutral point of view, and notability, before even trying to create an article. ColinFine (talk) 11:02, 18 June 2024 (UTC)

About photoshop copyright
Hey, I wanted to add a portrait of someone named Hans Westenberg, recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award. But unfortunately I only found two of his portraits. The first image has complete information such as who the photographer is, but it is a little blurry and has a watermark, while the second image comes from Ramon Magdaysay's official website and the portrait is clearer, but it is clear that the background has been photoshopped, so there is only a portrait of Hans and the background is a room. So the question is; Can I remove the watermark from the first image (without make the image clearer from the blur), or secondly can I still upload the second image which is clearer but has a photoshopped background. Rufinsky (talk) 10:54, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Rufinsky I assume we're talking fair-use (as in we can use it on en-WP because he's dead) uploads here, so I don't think it's WP-right to remove watermarks on those. On which image to use, use your best judgement, it's probably as good as anybody else. If someone at some point thinks the choice is "wrong", they can say so then. I'm guessing this [2] is one of the options you're thinking of, looks ok to me. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:17, 18 June 2024 (UTC)

- Most of these are from the Wikipedia: namespace to listings of user categories or are redirects for non-notable academic journals from predatory publishers that rely on volume rather than quality. Ideally we would have something like List of MDPI journals for this but in the "Academic Knowledge and Research Publishing" area the category is just too huge. Reconrabbit 13:42, 18 June 2024 (UTC)

Of course, everyone is encouraged to answer my questions :)! Thanking you all in advance for your enlightening answers ;)!

- I have no idea on the logged in thing, you're obviously logged in atm.
- On infobox params, for an infobox like say Template:Infobox_person#Blank_template_with_all_parameters, you can only add the parameters that are part of the template coding, so to speak, you can not invent a new one like say "daughters", you have to use the existing "children" (and it has to be written right, no extra capitals etc). Could it probably be a glitch in the system? How often does this happen? And when it does happen, what do you recommend I do to rectify it?
- Thanking you in advance for your answers and time.

Why are my edits gone ?
I created the Mario & Luigi: Brothership page at 16:04 CEST but my edits are now gone and it says the page was created at 16:48 by someone else. Why ? DanganMachin (talk) 15:24, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- Because you didn't clearly assert notability, user:Jimfbleak deleted it. Someone else re-created it a little later, and more clearly asserted notability before it came to the attention of an admin. - If you're going to edit in English Wikipedia, I think you might need to work on your English skills a bit: "so can I be as your students or means a junior" is very garbled - I think I can guess what you might mean, but it is not clear.
- One thing I always say to new editors: please don't even think of trying to create a new article until you've been editing for at least a few weeks, made a significant number of edits (to articles) that haven't been reverted, and have understood the five pillars of Wikipedia, and how to interact with other editors when there is disagreement. Best tools to create citations
Hello,
I am learning Wikipedia and would appreciate some guidance on tools for citations. Wikipedia provides a list here – Help:Citation_tools#Tools
Which ones would you recommend?
Nordic Research (talk) 16:12, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Nordic Research Welcome to the Teahouse. Of all the tools and gadgets mentioned on that page, the Wikipedia:Citation expander is the one I use most and would thoroughly recommend, especially if you are a scientist accustomed to finding sources that have a quoted digital object identifier. lowercase titles
found snom while looking around random pages (pages in general, not necessarily articles), noticed that the title was somehow lowercase despite technical limitations, but only on the article itself, and not the url, instances of it being linked, its talk page, and... everywhere else, really
apparently, this is done with a designated template, but is that really all there is to it? cogsan (nag me) (stalk me) 16:33, 18 June 2024 (UTC)

- @Cogsan: The name of the namespace is never changed by {{Lowercase title}}.
{{DISPLAYTITLE:}}
can be used for that, e.g.{{DISPLAYTITLE:user:cogsan/sandbox}}
to both lowercase "user" and "cogsan". PrimeHunter (talk) 23:36, 19 June 2024 (UTC)

- {{lowercase}} isn't all there is to it, actually – it uses the magic word {{DISPLAYTITLE}}, which changes how a page's title is displayed. jlwoodwa (talk) 22:23, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- it would appear i have no idea how to use displaytitle either
- shame, but also eh cogsan (nag me) (stalk me) 22:59, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- Template:DISPLAYTITLE/doc § Introduction explains the single rule: if you copy the displayed title of a page, and paste it into a link, the link needs to go to that page. This means that you can't make arbitrary changes to the title, but instead are limited to the changes listed at Template:DISPLAYTITLE/doc § Description. Once you have a valid title modification, you can apply it using the instructions at Template:DISPLAYTITLE/doc § Instructions; PrimeHunter gives an example of this above. Fortunately, you usually won't need to work with {{DISPLAYTITLE}} directly – most use-cases are covered by wrapper templates like {{lowercase}}. {{correct title examples}} gives a helpful table of these wrapper templates and example usages. jlwoodwa (talk) 00:12, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
Question on notability: creating article of a relative
I would like to write an article about my sibling who is an international athlete. There is an abundance of secondary sources available online, therefore writing a well-sourced, neutral, and verifiable article will not be an issue.
However, since they are my relative, it may appear as a conflict of interest and not pass the notability test.
Any suggestions? Luong.alois (talk) 17:31, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, Luong alois, and welcome to the Teahouse and to Wikipedia.
- Thank you for being open about your conflict of interest. As that link tells you, you are permitted to create a draft using the articles for creation process, and submit it for review. I would recommend that you disclose your COI on your user page User:Luong alois before you begin.
- Creating a new article is one of the hardest things to do in editing Wikipedia - even without the COI issue - and I always advise new editors to not even think about doing so until they have spent several weeks or months learning how Wikipedia works by making edits to existing articles: once they have understood fundamental principles such as verifiability, reliable sources, neutral point of view, and notability, then they can read your first article, and give it a go.
- Then, you should look at each of your sources critically, and ask if it meets all three of the criteria in the golden rule: is it reliably published, is it completely independent of your sibling, and does it contain significant coverage of your sibling?
- If you can find several that meet all these requirements, then you can continue. You need to forget everything you know, think, or believe about your sibling, and write a summary of what those sources say - even if you think they are wrong. Do you see why it is hard to write an article with a COI? ColinFine (talk) 17:47, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Luong.alois It is not your COI which might prevent your sibling from being wikinotable: it is only if the draft you produce doesn't demonstrate that using the type of sources Colin mentioned, which you say shouldn't be an issue. I suggest you read this essay which has some advice. Also, you might want to delay the difficult task of writing an article from scratch until you have built up some experience editing existing articles about topics that interest you. Reference
I used the Cit" indicator to add a reference. It completely changed the reference I was trying to add, making it useless. I am not surew what to do. The reference is an important source of information about my subject, Mary Conway Kohler. Here is the proper reference, note it is a library collection: SSC-MS-00282, Sophia Smith Collection, Mary Conway Kohler, Biographical Note, Smith College, Northampton, MA: See full Biographical Note. Henrybardklein (talk) 18:30, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- Courtesy link: Draft:Mary Conway Kohler Theroadislong (talk) 18:50, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- Henrybardklein, your draft currently has a single reference. This reference reads "SSC-MS-00282, Sophia Smith Collection, Mary Conway Kohler, Biographical Note, Smith College, Northampton, MA: See full Biographical Note." (You added it 11 minutes after posting the message above.) As I understand this, the reader is expected to ask Smith College for item SSC-MS-00282, which is a "Biographical Note" about MCK, and should then "See full Biographical Note". This is already somewhat strange: If I'm invited to read, say "What is it like to be a bat?", I don't expect then to be immediately told to see the full "What is it like to be a bat?" More problematically, if, after all the time you've spent on this draft you can cite no more than a single, unpublished biographical note about the subject, this suggests a lack of "notability" as understood within and for Wikipedia. Until you demonstrate this notability, this won't be promoted from draft to article. -- Hoary (talk) 00:00, 19 June 2024 (UTC)

- Your draft User:CrowdedMusic/sandbox was Speedy deleted as promotional and/or misusing Wikipedia as a webhost. You can contact the Administrator User:Fastily who did that to ask to recover content. In passing, read WP:UP for what is and is not appropriate for a User page, WP:YFA for how to create and submit a draft, and WP:AUTO for why Wikipedia strongly recommends no attempts at autobiography. David notMD (talk) 21:32, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- @CrowdedMusic I have nominated the logo you uploaded to Wikimedia Commons for 'speedy deletion'. If you genuinely are the owner of Crowded Music, you appear to have given everyone the right to use your company logo as they see fit. That would seem quite daft, to be honest.
- But if you are not the copyright owner, then you had no right to upload a trade-marked logo and release it for others to use as they see fit. We take copyright violations very seriously, and always default on the side of protecting copyright holders, rather than allowing stuff to be uploaded and released unlawfully.
- If you genuinely wish to relinquish control by releasing it on Wikimedia Commons, please follow the advice given at the Interactive Release Generator tool. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 22:10, 18 June 2024 (UTC)

Teletype powered on.
In the article about the Model 33 Teletype, I found "The sole electric motor in the machine has to be left running continuously whenever unattended operation is expected, and is designed to withstand many hours of idling."
As a former technician who used to overhaul various models of Teletype equipment, I can state this is false. Generally, the machine would be powered down and power up automatically when a connection was being made to it. This was the case in both dial up services, such as Telex or TWX and also for polled circuits. In other situations, such as when used as a computer terminal, it would be manually turned on or off, as needed. The only machines I ever saw that were always on were the ones on circuits where there was a lot of traffic, such as in a major telegraph office. 2607:FEA8:4C82:5900:76D4:35FF:FE5B:F5FA (talk) 19:31, 18 June 2024 (UTC)

- Hello, IP user, and welcome to the Teahouse. While I agree with WelpThatWorked, that you can remove the claim, I'd like to make clear that the reason that you can remove it is that it is unsupported by a source, not because you believe it to be false. If the claim were supported by what appeared to be a reliably published source, then you should not remove it, though you would be welcome to open a discussion on the article's talk page arguing for removing it. Trouble understanding citation style
Hello, I am new to Wikipedia and learning quite a bit about how to contribute. I was searching for Stoic Philosophy, and came across Stoicism: A Very Short Introduction. The citation is unlike the usual... upon further inspection, I couldn't find the reference that are given, on google nor on Harvard's database. Perhaps, I don't know how to access such references/Citations... I could use a hand. Thank you. Usrp12 (talk) 20:54, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Usrp12, welcome to the Teahouse. The links under "Citations" are supposed to go to works under "Bibliography". I have fixed that.[4] Does that answer your question? This citation system is usually only used when the same work is referenced multiple times with different page numbers. It's a bit pointless to use it in Stoicism: A Very Short Introduction. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:49, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you very much. Usrp12 (talk) 22:19, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- Fixed. Harvard refs and shortened footnotes don't take ref name markup as in <ref name="Whatever2024">. I've removed the unnecessary ref names, converted the cites to the shortened footnote format (sfn), and added urls that link to PDFs of the references. Carlstak (talk) 22:34, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- Ah, I did this before I read all of PrimeHunter's reply. I'm leaving them as is—maybe someday the article will have more cites.;-) Carlstak (talk) 22:46, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
Question about account merging
On Wikipedia:User access levels, it says one of the permissions is "centralauth-merge", in which a user can merge their account, whether IP-based or signed in. Does that mean that if I create an account, I could move all my contributions and my talk page to that account? 24.115.255.37 (talk) 21:08, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
- No, edits cannot be reassigned from an IP address to an account. All you can do is write on the IP page and user page that you are the same person. This is permitted and no evidence is required. centralauth-merge hasn't been relevant since the mw:SUL finalisation in 2015. All accounts which could be merged were merged back then. 2. John is a person who is notable enough to have a Wikipedia article. Can John edit his own article to add information about himself with no sources to back it up? And would something written by John himself be a valid source for that article?

I was I, in 1970, who created and opened the "Mr. Feed'em" restaurant in the basement of the shop at Kensington Church Street. How to apply for a user block? If that uses multiple accounts (sock)?
Hey!! I am Roberthooke003 ,
Q.-1)Over the past few days, I have noticed a concerning trend in the South Asian military history articles on Wikipedia. A significant number of articles that are of relatively low importance are being rapidly created and then promptly deleted. What is particularly noteworthy is the speed at which these articles are appearing and disappearing. The root cause that I have identified behind this issue is the persistent vandalism of existing articles by certain users. I have compiled a list of names that should be closely monitored and considered for inclusion on a list of frequent vandals.
I have observed accounts of a few users that are sock of each other
-User:Rawn3012
-User:Mohammad Umar Ali
-User:Ratnahastin
-User:Based.kashmiri(Sock already blocked)
-User:Padfoot2008
-User: BHUPENDRA JOGI
How does this kind of sock accounts get blocked? How can I apply for their permanent block? These users continuously vandalising the south asian millitary history articles.
Q-2)How to Save any article from external attacks? How can I protect any article from being edited by any of these users?
It will be good if anyone suggests the solution regarding the Problem. Thanks!!! Roberthooke003 (talk) 06:24, 19 June 2024 (UTC)

Draft:The Real Kerala Story - (Submission rejected on 17 June 2024)
Write an article related to an important topic in Kerala Also published, many references were included in these articles.
But it went to Deletetion Discuss where it failed and was taken back to Drafit where the article was developed. But today it has been rejected its entry into the main space and Kerala is also affected by this article. Spworld2 (talk) 10:33, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Spworld2: Your draft has been rejected because it appears to be an essay that states your opinion rather than a neutral Wikipedia article. Sentences in the draft such as The Real Kerala Story which tells the truth about Kerala in India say things such as "the truth". Wikipedia does not say things are "the truth" or not; we just publish what reliable sources say about the topic in a neutral way. Please read WP:NOTESSAY and Wikipedia:Verifiability, not truth. Cheers Relativity ⚡️ 10:43, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- Article topic: Telling the truth about Kerala, not telling lies
- "The Real Kerala Story" is a common name if you search on Google you will get many references about it, some are given there, this is not written as an essay, some subtitles are included in it to make it clear to the readers of the article.
- This is a story about Kerala but it is not a documentary or a movie
- The political controversies about Kerala are falsely framed and published as a film-like controversy, and this is a protest phrase, 'The Real Kerala Story', which is a collective name for a group of events currently taking place in Kerala. Spworld2 (talk) 11:00, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- Spworld2, your draft would be easier to understand if it started by making it clear that it's critical of the film The Kerala Story, and giving that link. If you read that Wikipedia article on the film, you'll see that it says, in its first paragaph, "Marketed as a true story, the film is premised on the Hindutva conspiracy theory of "love jihad", and falsely claims that thousands of Hindu women from Kerala have been converted to Islam and recruited in the Islamic State." Maproom (talk) 13:05, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- Maproom,What do you mean ? Does this article mean it's unlikely? Controversies arise due to misrepresentation in films and the happenings in Kerala of 'The Real Kerala Story' break this. Religious events, philanthropic activities and social life in Kerala are generally known as ''The Real Kerala Story''. Spworld2 (talk) 05:33, 20 June 2024 (UTC)

If you read that Wikipedia article on the film, you'll see that it says, in its first paragaph, "Marketed as a true story, the film is premised on the Hindutva conspiracy theory of "love jihad", and falsely claims that thousands of Hindu women from Kerala have been converted to Islam and recruited in the Islamic State." Depth and secondary articles
I am developing an article for a subject that has been covered by tech news sites, a published research paper and by financial institutions. The reviewers reject the draft. Please advise on which sources exactly are acceptable. Madingaizi (talk) 10:42, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- Courtesy link: The article in question appears to be Draft:FinanceGPT. The review note says that "the draft needs multiple published sources that are:
- in-depth (not just brief mentions about the subject or routine announcements)
- reliable
- secondary
- strictly independent of the subject.
- Make sure you add references that meet all four of these criteria before resubmitting."
- Each of those bullet points is linked to guidelines that describe what the requirements are. Please read through those, then come back and ask if you have any specific questions.--Gronk Oz (talk) 11:04, 19 June 2024 (UTC)

Blocked IPs cannot purge page??
Hi there,
I was trying to purge my userpage on a shared IP which was blocked, and hit the "purge" button, but it just shows the Blocked page. Is this possible to be changed? It's very frustrating. Myrealnamm (💬pros · ✏️cons) 13:48, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- Myrealnamm, if an IP address has been blocked, it's been blocked for a reason, and shouldn't be able to edit, or puge, or anything else. As you have an account, why not use that to purge? Maproom (talk) 14:43, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- But doesn't purge just show the newest version of something? Does it edit Wikipedia? I was showing my friend something on their computer and they had to purge it. Myrealnamm (💬pros · ✏️cons) 15:13, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- It's debatable whether or not it "edits" Wikipedia, but it can certainly change the contents of a page, if for example that page transcludes a template or image which has been changed. So it is potentially changing the stored information which gets displayed. ColinFine (talk) 16:06, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- Purging a page may change what you see in your browser after it is purged, but does not change content located on any Wikimedia page server, i.e. does not change the stored content of the page. Mathglot (talk) 20:55, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Mathglot: Purging refers to Help:Purge and it does often change what is stored on our servers. It doesn't change the stored wikitext of a page but it can change how the page is currently rendered for everybody, not just the user who made the purge. It's not the same as a browser reloading a page. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:35, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- To clarify, if you hit "purge" and hit yes, it will force the current version to appear for everybody the next time you open the page? Myrealnamm (💬pros · ✏️cons) 21:37, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- Oh wow. It does. I just tried with a guest browsing window, hit purge from there, and it also changes what I see (from testing at User:Myrealnamm/Guestbook with the Wikipedia ad), and in fact, it shows the same ad for everyone. I never knew that! Myrealnamm (💬pros · ✏️cons) 21:40, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Myrealnamm: Yes. It requires significant server resources to render a page from its wikitext, partly due to our extensive use of templates which have to be processed. For efficiency reasons, the rendered version of a page is cached after an edit and certain other events like a purge. Then everybody sees the cached version until the next rendering is triggered by something. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:38, 19 June 2024 (UTC)

List symbols?
I'm trying to improve List of festivals in California. Some of these festivals are no longer celebrated or have been cancelled indefinitely. What are those list symbols used to indicate such festivals, and is there a template? Thanks, TWOrantulaTM (enter the web) 15:46, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- I don't know, but I don't see the need for that level of detail in the list, since the reader simply needs to click on the appropriate link to determine whether that festival is current, e.g. the Gilroy Garlic Festival article begins:
The Gilroy Garlic Festival was a food festival...

Which infobox do you use for an orchard?
I'm trying to write an article about a local orchard. I've found plenty of significant coverage from independent sources and have yet to implement them. However, I'm not sure which kind of infobox I should use. Do I use {{Infobox farm}} or {{Infobox company}}? Thanks, TWOrantulaTM (enter the web) 16:59, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi TrademarkedTWOrantula,
- If the information you've gleaned from sources fits into most or all of the variables for {{infobox farm}} then that is what I'd go for, but really it's not too important which infobox you use, since the reader isn't going to see that. Interestingly, National Fruit Collection is an orchard open to visitors, that uses {{infobox park}}. -- D'n'B-t -- 17:14, 19 June 2024 (UTC)

I don't know what to do here. But given this article - https://www.jpost.com/israel-hamas-war/article-806739 The whole notion of Gaza Strip famine built on a foundation of dubious references that have been debunked. Request for starting over
I have had a history of being banned for what I didn't think was vandalism, and every time I had a good intention, to combat vandalism. My last ban, roughly in October, ended a month ago. Could I do a fresh start? I have had roughly six or seven accounts, and three IP bans. I would be fine if I am not allowed to contribute. Also, could I make an account or am I forever doomed to not have one? I have reviewed the Wikipedia essays on fresh starts and vandalism. 2603:8000:E600:C0A4:F526:8D66:BCAF:3CBB (talk) 20:49, 19 June 2024 (UTC)

Isn’t this a COI? They have been asking for help on how to make an article about Tifanny Dawn Atkins which seems to be similar to their name. I want to warn them for COI, but I am hesitant. They disruptively edited here [5] but that‘s it. Is that good enough to issue a warn? I’ve only been here for like 3 months so I’m still unsure. Cheers, 48JCL 22:17, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- @48JCL It is not prohibited to try to create an autobiography, only strongly discouraged, for the reasons given at that link. Most new editors who try to do so don't succeed. They are required to use the WP:AfC process so their efforts can be approved (or not) by experienced editors. My advice would be to ignore that editor or write on their talk page gently pointing out these facts. Mike Turnbull (talk) 09:39, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
Internet Archive books
Is it acceptable to cite/link to scanned or digital books in the Internet Archive? I heard they were sued for copyright violation. Wafflewombat (talk) 01:47, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Wafflewombat Yes, until the issue is settled. See Internet Archive#Copyright issues for some of the background. In prior cases, the Archive made a settlement regarding particular items, or removed them. Wikipedia makes extensive use of the Archive, as you will be aware, and the consequences would be severe here if it had to cease operating entirely. Note that the citation is the key aspect of our articles: the Archive link is just for the convenience of readers so they can easily verify what we say. Mike Turnbull (talk) 09:48, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
Correcting double spaces
I've seen this a lot, so is there any way to quickly find which articles have double spaces (like this) and where? I first thought of using these brackets in the search "" like I sometimes do to fix typos, but it didn't work. Thanks! GoldRomean (talk) 02:17, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- The example didn't work but like this. GoldRomean (talk) 02:18, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- @GoldRomean: Double spaces are rendered as one, so it doesn't matter. Please don't try to "fix" these. RudolfRed (talk) 05:17, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- Just to add that there are certainly billions of double spaces in Wikipedia (currently 57 on this page alone) so it's pointless to set out to correct them. Shantavira|feed me 07:50, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
I am allowed to reach out to people who are affiliated with the topic I am writing about?
Am I allowed to reach out to the people who are affiliated with a topic I am writing about for more sources and information? The topic is a piece of video media from the 1990's. The cast had a lot of subcultural notability in the 80's/90's and were features in subculture magazines (skateboarding in particular) so I'm wondering if they know where to get more sources about the video they were in. No offense to them but I don't think any of the cast members or anybody else involved would meet the qualifications for notability in the present nor would have in the past honestly. (I'd be seeking them out through social media.) WindowColorCenter (talk) 03:38, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- No. Wikipedia acts as a repository for verifiable sources. Social media accounts are not reliable or particularly reliable. Wrosh (talk) 03:47, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Wrosh of course, it's true we don't use posts on social media as sources, as they are not reliable sources. Here we have @WindowColorCenter asking if it's okay to "reach out" to someone, asking if that person can point to a reliable source. That seems okay to me — unless you can point me to a policy that suggests otherwise? MatthewDalhousie (talk) 03:57, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Wrosh: That's mostly true. Social media accounts can be used for some things, but their scope of use is very limited, and they'd be considered primary sources, which won't help in establishing a subject's wikinotability. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 14:15, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Wrosh, thank you. I studied up on the practicalities of sources before I'd started writing and knew to refrain from using them as sources as well as blogs as those as primary sources, from what I'd understood could not be used no problem and in any case thank you for the reminder. @MatthewDalhousie is right is what I had been asking about with the article. More clearly I had been meaning to say if it was alright to reach out to people who had been involved with the media on their own social media accounts which is how I would attempt to reach them and ask them for any sources they have. Thank you both! I'm glad I am able to reach out to others to ask as part of the research I am attempting to do. WindowColorCenter (talk) 20:12, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, WindowColorCenter, and welcome to the Teahouse. Certainly you can reach out to people involved and ask if they can point you to reliable independent sources|, as MatthewDalhousie says. Both articles refer to the same set of regions, should they be merged or should one be deleted? (Check out Draft:List of natural regions of France). Excellenc1 (talk) 04:52, 20 June 2024 (UTC)

- @GoldRomean The things that were added happened after I made my comment. While he's made himself a "wall" for awards, there's nothing on those pages to suggest that he's here to improve the encyclopedia. Fabrickator (talk) 18:21, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Fabrickator Fair; so far they haven't edited a single mainspace article yet. And that's probably more important that working on user subpages. I just don't think it's necessarily correct to discourage new users from making subpages. Well anyway, I feel like the question's been answered, as the user knows how to make subpages now, and this conversation is veering toward an unnecessary argument, so I believe it's wise for us to end this and for me to politely withdraw myself from this conversation. But you need to cite each source directly after the statement (or statements) it supports. As things are, a reader has no reason to believe anything you've written in the draft, as it cites no sources. Maproom (talk) 08:21, 20 June 2024 (UTC)

new user page translation
I am a new user and I want to translate a Japanese page to English, but Wikipedia does not permit me to do so, what should I do? Maryam.mgs (talk) 13:17, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hello @Maryam.mgs, welcome to the Teahouse. Anyone can translate articles from other language Wikipedias to English, as long as they follow the guidelines for content attribution. There is a page that provides information on this: Help:Translation. Since you are a new user and do not have many edits, the specific use of the Content Translation Tool is not allowed until you have 500 edits and have been a member for 1 month. Reconrabbit 14:13, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- Maryam.mgs, The short answer is: translate it yourself, as long as it is on Japanese Wikipedia, and forget about the Content Translation Tool. I was going to suggest you start by creating a sandbox page, User:Maryam.mgs/sandbox, but it looks like you have already started an article there about "Kyoichi Tanaka", and then I noticed you also created Draft:Kyoichi Tanaka as well. I assume that is the topic you wish to translate?
- I found a Japanese article at ja:田中恭一 about a Japanese businessman involved with a contact lens company, so I assume that is the article you are translating. If so, you can keep on translating it, just be aware that Wikipedia's Terms of use requires that all translations from other Wikipedias be attributed by a statement in the edit summary; see WP:TFOLWP for how to word this. Looking at the history of the Draft, it looks like there is a brief attribution statement on the initial edit which probably suffices, so you can just carry on translating. Mathglot (talk) 03:49, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks @Mathglot
- Yes, That's true. I want to write a page about Kyoichi Tanaka.
- So now, I am translating directly. but I want the page to be shown as the second language of the japanese page. Now, in my edit, in the language part, it shows only one language and it is considered as independent page. How can I link the japanese and the english pages. Maryam.mgs (talk) 08:14, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- The pages are linked through Wikidata. Once the English page is published (no longer a draft), it will be possible to add it to the list of Wikipedia entries on this page: wikidata:Q11575551. MOst of the time this is done by people patrolling new pages or bots so it is not usually something you have to worry about. Reconrabbit 13:27, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks @Reconrabbit for the explanation.
- Even if the english version of the page is not exactly the same as the japanese version (more detailed than the japanese version)?
- Thank you Maryam.mgs (talk) 14:10, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- That is correct. It would be impossible for every article to be the same across different languages anyway, since it is discouraged to use machine translation. Also, different sources may be used in different languages. As an example, the English article on Narita Brian is a stub, and it uses the Los Angeles Times as a source. The Japanese article does not use this source, and it is a much longer Featured Article. Reconrabbit 14:29, 21 June 2024 (UTC)

Editing my company's Wikipedia page
I work for the company Ontotext, and the Wikipedia page for an Ontotext product https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ontotext_GraphDB has not been edited since a few years before I joined. The biography of Tansey Coetzee describes her as "coloured" which seems dated. But I don't know if there is a guideline on this. ☆ Bri (talk) 18:14, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- Different countries and cultures have different preferred and non-preferred terms. I'm not an expert, but it is my understanding that "coloured" is a commonly used and accepted term in South Africa. See Coloureds. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 18:19, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
question about a draft
I am hoping to get some direction, I was told that it would benefit me greatly if I would create myself an author page and a WIKI page, now I have a draft that was declined by Zingarese, hope I have figured out how to reach out to that particular person but I would love some direction on what I need to change in order to get my page published, I can send my email address if that would be helpful but not on a public forum, thank you! @Zingarese Author Bekka Scott (talk) 19:09, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- You have misunderstood what Wikipedia is, Wikipedia doesn't host "author pages" we have articles on notable people see the relevant criteria at WP:NWRITER. Theroadislong (talk) 19:24, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- WP, however, does host userpage profiles so long as said material relates in some way to users' activity, tenure, and/or goals hereon. Note that userpages cannot be used as ads/promotional tools/spam bait, social profiles, forum threads, or personal web pages; there are other avenues for the likes of those. As for users who have their own official articles, WP:Notable Wikipedians is your go-to. --Slgrandson (How's my egg-throwing coleslaw?) 22:49, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- It also appears that a significant portion (everything but 'early life') was copied from a website with a copyright notice. If the subject is notable (which it doesn't appear based on the two links provided so far), the content will need to be basically entirely rewritten to not be a copy of another website (or any copyrighted source). -bɜ:ʳkənhɪmez (User/say hi!) 19:27, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- I was told by my agent to post one since I am an up and coming author. I didn't copy and paste anything to the page, I wrote it myself off the cuff. 72.222.81.23 (talk) 11:59, 21 June 2024 (UTC)

If I intentionally vandalize a page and then immediately revert it is that still blockable
So say I, for example, vandalize 2024 Atlantic hurricane season to replace the infobox with "ugerhighisldrgh;iohrse;ighiserbgeshrgbpiuerwip" (I wouldn't do that, I was just giving an example of vandalism), and then revert the edit five seconds later. Would that still be a blockable offense? 24.115.255.37 (talk) 19:38, 20 June 2024 (UTC)

(Almost) EVERYTHING IS THE INFOBOX!!!1!
Basically, I am attempting to merge USS Wadsworth (FFG-9) with ORP Generał Tadeusz Kościuszko. I made an edit (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=ORP_Genera%C5%82_Tadeusz_Ko%C5%9Bciuszko&oldid=1230123249) on the latter article with a lot of the text from the former, with the infobox from the former as well. When I uploaded the edit though, I noticed something weird: The infobox was at the bottom of the page. I decided to open the edited article in the editor and I saw something horrifying: the infobox was somehow containing all the text (not within itself, but rather just as one whole lump, if that makes any sense). I reverted the edit in response to this.

Takahue cemetery
there was no information on my home community cemetery, I contacted the person that runs it. No one knows how to put the correct information in. I tried but there was only room to put her phone number. The local library found me a link which I also inserted. How do I be able to edit semi-protected pages?
I am not yet an admin as of June 20, 2024 (date I posted this). My goal is to make 10 edits/day. [After 1 day, do I get autoconfirmed?]
No, I never vandalized a page before.
I am not able to revert edits yet. As of June 20, 2024, of course.
Did I vandalize a page before or not? Lateruniverse (talk) 21:57, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- Lateruniverse, if you're sure that you "never vandalized a page before", it's odd that you then ask "Did I vandalize a page before or not?" You seem very confused. My Article Keeps Declined
Hi,
My article submission for "Rology" was recently declined with feedback stating that it reads more like an advertisement and lacks multiple published sources that are in-depth, reliable, secondary, and strictly independent of the subject. I've made revisions to address these concerns, and I would like some guidance to ensure my article meets Wikipedia's standards.
Here are the changes I've implemented:
- Neutral Tone: Revised the language to remove promotional tone and ensure a neutral point of view.
- References: Included a wider range of references from independent and reliable sources such as FDA Database, Disrupt Africa, Arab News, MIT Solve, WHO, Forbes, Medical Device Network, and Diagnostic Imaging.
- Detailed Information: Added more detailed information about Rology's history, services, impact, and partnerships based on verifiable facts.
Could you please review the revised draft below and provide specific feedback on how to further improve it to meet Wikipedia's guidelines? Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

DRAFT Rology is an FDA-cleared. AI-assisted teleradiology platform founded in 2017, and headquartered in Cairo, Egypt, with offices in Kenya and Saudi Arabia. It aims to address the shortage of radiologists and improve the accessibility and quality of radiological services, particularly in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region History and Development Rology was established to bridge the gap between the demand for radiology services and the limited supply of qualified radiologists. By leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and a network of subspecialized radiologists, Rology says it provides timely and accurate radiology reports to healthcare providers. In 2023, Rology secured the FDA 510(k) clearance for its teleradiology platform, marking it as the first AI-assisted teleradiology platform to receive such approval, according to Rology's analysis. Services and Features Rology's platform facilitates the electronic transmission of medical images such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs for interpretation by radiologists worldwide based on their licenses. Key features of the platform include:
Impact and Reach Rology said it has served over 150 healthcare providers across 9 countries, and delivered radiology reports for over 657,832 patients till October 2023. The platform benefits underserved areas, with a substantial portion of scans catering to primary care settings and low-income demographics. Partnerships and Collaborations Rology has formed strategic partnerships to enhance its offerings and expand its reach. In 2023, it acquired Arkan United, a Saudi-licensed teleradiology provider, and secured an investment from the Philips Foundation to support its mission of democratizing access to healthcare.

- @Mahbarakat2018 So, for example, your reference #10 should be formatted as: Hall, Jeff (4 October 2023). "FDA Clears Emerging AI-Enabled Teleradiology Platform". diagnosticimaging.com. Retrieved 21 June 2024. Note that, like many others you use, it is based on a press release/interview with someone from the company and hence is not independent. That means it cannot help demonstrate that the company is wikinotable. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:40, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- What other sources you find accepted so I can understand the criteria? Mahbarakat2018 (talk) 18:20, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources.
- You need to make sure that almost all your sources meet the triple criteria in 42 - in particular, nothing at all which is derived from the company (such as press releases) is of any use. ColinFine (talk) 21:24, 21 June 2024 (UTC)

Issues with CCSDS page on Wikipedia
I'm a long time user of Wikipedia, and contribute financially but not with words (so far). I'm also one of the leaders in the CCSDS organization and have noticed that the Wiki page is incomplete and somewhat biased. The link is Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems. I'd like to fix these issues. What is the best way to proceed? LotsOfStrings (talk) 23:33, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
- @LotsOfStrings: Welcome to the Teahouse. For one, you must disclose that you have a conflict of interest with the subject in question, preferably on your user page. Second, you should use the article's talk page at Talk:Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems and submit an edit request of what exactly you want to change and a reliable source that backs your proposed change. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 00:36, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for that information. I’ll update my user profile. Since CCSDS is a consensus organization I could even have the governing body “bless” the edits. I assume Wikipedia wants accuracy and that’s how we get it. I also believe that there’s room for differences of opinion, but I’m most interested in facts. Right? Since CCSDS is a consensus organization I could even have the governing body “bless” the edits. I assume Wikipedia wants accuracy and that’s how we get it.
That is something you don't want to do. While it could potentially be used as a primary source, you may only use it for things that are not contentious (more info at WP:ABOUTSELF). Ideally information is taken from sources that follow the golden rule; that is, sources that are reliable, independent of the subject, and significantly covers the subject.
While I have a slight bone to pick with Wikipedia for what it's concerned about, the encyclopedia is concerned that the information can be verified from reliable sources, not the absolute truth. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 17:57, 21 June 2024 (UTC)- And, to add to what Tenryuu says, "blessing" by the governing body is not required: in fact it is totally irrelevant. If reliable sources said something significant about the organisation which the governing body really didn't want repeated, it could and possibly should still go in the article. ColinFine (talk) 21:27, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for clarifying this. I would myself be interested in whatever any “reliable sources” would have to say. That said, I wonder how you assess “reliability”. LotsOfStrings (talk) 23:44, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- There are links in my comment above that will take you to the relevant pages, such as Wikipedia:Reliable sources. If a source you want to cite isn't on the list of perennial reliable sources, you can ask at the reliable sources noticeboard. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 01:05, 22 June 2024 (UTC)

Splitting off parts of two articles to make a third. Some questions
I suggested splitting off the history sections of Gay literature and Lesbian literature into their own article (something like History of LGBT literature) back in February because of the size of their history sections, but never went through with making a full proposal due to a combination of not knowing how and some difficulty staying logged in to the site. I've decided to try to come back to that and have read WP:Split but I'm still confused. Specifically, my questions are how should I format the split template, and where should the central discussion for this take place? I assume that since it involves two articles being split to make a third merged one, it shouldn't just be on one of their talk pages, should it?--Lover of lgbt literature (talk) 06:34, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Lover of lgbt literature.
- If you have a discussion anywhere, then you can post an appropriate notice on other talk pages directing people to that discussion but I would suggest that in this case the central discussion belongs on the talk page of the LGBT studies WikiProject. If you were to go there then the template would look something like
{{Split section|History of LGBT literature|discuss=Wikipedia talk:WikiProject LGBT studies#Discussion Title}}
. Does that help? -- D'n'B-t -- 07:06, 21 June 2024 (UTC)- Yep. Thanks. I don't have time right now, and I have an appointment tomorrow, so I'll propose that over the weekend.--Lover of lgbt literature (talk) 08:16, 21 June 2024 (UTC)

- Hi @Meena1998: the problem isn't so much the writing style, but rather the content. Your draft merely describes what the business does, including very specifically what projects it has worked on, the awards it has won, its CSR initiatives, etc. While I can understand that's what the business would like to tell the world about itself, we have no interest in that. We want to see what independent and reliable secondary sources have said about this company, and in particular about what makes it noteworthy, rather than just another ROTM business. HTH, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 07:42, 21 June 2024 (UTC)

- @Meena1998: as mentioned already, we need to see what independent and reliable secondary sources, entirely of their own volition, have chosen to say about this business. If you can find multiple (3+) such sources, and summarise (in your own words, but without any additional commentary or embellishment) their coverage, then it may be possible to have an article on this subject accepted. Can't really say much more than that, without seeing what you come up with. -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 09:03, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- I Understand, I took an existing article as a reference to write this one, only difference is that they have not added any projects and CSR activities, If I remove those content will it be Good to go? Meena1998 (talk) 07:52, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- Meena1998, five awards are listed. Three aren't sourced at all, and a fourth is sourced to a mere PR vehicle. I haven't looked at the fifth, but I'll assume for a moment that it's reliable. So in this section, reliable sourcing is running at an unimpressive 20%. -- Hoary (talk) 09:23, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- Also, minor awards - those that are not themselves Wikipedia articles (Academy, Nobel, etc.) can be listed but do not contribute to establishing notability. David notMD (talk) 12:02, 21 June 2024 (UTC)

Gregg Bissonette
I made a few edits to Gregg’s page. As of now he is currently Modern Drummers reader poll winner. For people wanting to know about him, that’s important current information about his accomplishments. So that being the first thing people read would be a smart addition. Is there a way to keep that info at the top being that it is a current highlight in his drumming career? Thank you, Mike Mike Drums (talk) 11:54, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- Mike Drums Your two attempts at additions to Gregg Bissonette were reverted because you did not provide a verifying reference. You were informed of this reason on your Talk page. David notMD (talk) 12:05, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- In this set of edits, you added Gregg Bissonette has the well-deserved honor of being Modern Drummers current, 2023, readers poll winner of the Best "All Around" drummer category. How is this so important that it must precede the introductory sentence? How may the reader verify this? Who says that it's well-deserved, and where do they say it? - @Mike Drums There are detailed instructions for citing your sources at WP:CITE. You are proposing to edit a biography of a living peron for which we have very strict sourcing/citation requirements (see that link). You should place the new material about the award in the relevant section of the main article and only repeat that in the WP:LEAD if it is one of the most important of his accomplishments. The fact that it is the most recent is not relevant. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:16, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, Mike Drums. To add to what Mike Turnbull has said: no article should ever refer to anything in evaulative terms such as "well-deserved" in Wikipedia's voice. - Hi @EmmaKendrickCox. To put it bluntly, your sandbox draft was a promotional advert for Russell. Wikipedia is not a place to promote people. Your draft would be suited for an About Me page on his personal website, but not an encyclopedia.
- How are you connected to Russell? Qcne (talk) 15:52, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi there - I am sorry about that. Russell is someone I know, he's done incredible work in the entrepreneurial space and boosting the economy in Scotland. I was under the impression that because of his philanthorpic work and his work with uplifting the economy this was within the guardrails. EmmaKendrickCox (talk) 15:59, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- @EmmaKendrickCox You have a conflict of interest, so you should check WP:COI to understand the requirements.
- Wikipedia articles must be about topics that pass our notability policy, in this case WP:NPEOPLE. We require multiple published reliable independent sources to establish notability. - @EmmaKendrickCox The draft in your sandbox will shortly be deleted. It seems to be an attempt to be a biography of a living person called Russell Dalgleish. However, it cites no sources, which is against Wikipedia policy for biographies of living people. As such it can never be accepted as an article. DYK question
Hello, I am a frequent editor but new to DYK. I just rewrote Theatre Development Fund which used to be exceptionally promotional and changed everything in the article (save for a some references here and there) so that it complied with WP:PROMO, such that only a very small amount of the former prose remains. While the article is not necessarily "new", it was significantly improved in my opinion, I think it is also new since most of the prose is new. My question is does this merit the nomination of the article for DYK (ie. would it be taken seriously) although does not technically fall under the "new" article category, GA, or five-fold expansion categories? Any feedback on the article would be greatly appreciated (such as if everthing I did was unneccessary)!! Thank you, P,TO 19104 (talk) (contribs) 16:32, 21 June 2024 (UTC)

Would it be possible for Wikipedia to stop changing appearance?
As a decades-long user of Wikipedia, I don't know what inspired the recent changes to the site's appearance. First, the Table of Contents became a sidebar, and now it assumes a large browser-window -- at least when javascript is not used. (Disabling javascript allows me to run lean, when carrying out extended research.) If it ain't broke, why fix it? 2604:3D08:7070:1500:FAB1:56FF:FE9B:B422 (talk) 17:02, 21 June 2024 (UTC)

- I get the impression that the developers are continuing to make changes to the Vector 2022 skin. If you create an account, you can choose a different skin, such as legacy vector 2010 (the default before the new vector came out). RudolfRed (talk) 02:23, 22 June 2024 (UTC)

Map of state highlighting a county
Something has happened to the Wikimedia Commons state maps highlighting a county. The maps used to show the entire state and its counties, with the highlighted county in red. Now, the map of the state, and all the counties except the highlighted county, is gone. Examples are the maps in the InfoBoxes for Battle of Charleston (1862), Battle of Cove Mountain, Battle of Droop Mountain, Battle of Fayetteville (1862). There are others. All of these maps used to show the entire state divided by county. The state was white with borders in black. The highlighted county was a solid red. Now, the only thing that appears is the red part. Looking at only the file "Map of West Virginia highlighting Fayette County.svg" in WikiMedia, it says the English version is used in over 40 pages. What happened? Will it be restored? TwoScars (talk) 17:10, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- I certainly hope so. The current map is remarkably useless. Maproom (talk) 19:14, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- I see it's been fixed, with the comment "neuter the clipping path". Maproom (talk) 06:55, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- This has been bugging me. It still appears as such on my end on the linked pages. Oddly enough it started with this new redesign. 2604:2D80:D503:3700:AF70:7991:DFAD:B637 (talk) 10:40, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- There is a post on Commons:Graphics village pump called Map of state highlighting a county. Evidently, the SVG file source does not validate and does not work on modern browsers. Someone has fixed Fayette County, but basically all of the states have the problem. Other West Virginia counties such as Kanawha County, Pocahontas County, and Hardy County have not been fixed. Also noticed Wythe County, Virginia needs to be fixed. Also noticed Talbot County, Maryland needs to be fixed. TwoScars (talk) 15:44, 22 June 2024 (UTC)

Should this be mentioned in the Khiam article?

How to indicate that there is a no citations or a lack of it

Why this article is rejected
This draft article is rejected for having references from a single source.but i don't know why this excuse was given as it has already cited many sources.can any body help me with this.
--kemel49(connect)(contri) 18:58, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- It wasn't rejected, it was declined. If it was rejected, the message would have said so, and this means you should not pursue further attempts to publish it. But because it was declined, that means the reviewer thinks it may have potential but it still needs improvement before it is deemed acceptable for publication in article space. It wasn't declined for having a single source, it was declined for not citing reliable sources. ~Anachronist (talk) 19:05, 21 June 2024 (UTC)

I have magazine articles but they aren't archived online. OK to use for citations?
I reached out to several people who were involved with the production of the media I am making an article about. One responded and this person provided to me several magazine pages and clippings. Although I haven't extensively looked online yet (I'd like to ask in advance), I don't know if they could be found in an online database of magazine articles. Is it still okay to use them for citations? WindowColorCenter (talk) 20:29, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- The problem with a collection of clippings is they won't necessarily have provenance. There's a big difference between "a clipping from my collection says XYZ", and "an article from issue #420 of Generic Magazine (June 1999, page 65) says XYZ", even if the clipping is the article.
- If you can provide bibliographic information for when and where the articles were published - even if they're not online yet - we should be good. DS (talk) 20:36, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- @DragonflySixtyseven Thank you, that's the info I was hoping to find. That comes across hopeful on my end. Alright, I'll put my best into getting something together. WindowColorCenter (talk) 20:42, 21 June 2024 (UTC)

How do I make a Wikipedia article for a subject with an article that already exists?
I'd like to make a new Wikipedia article however there is no red link for creation because pages with the same name already exist. I'm sure there is a simple answer but I can't find one ! Thanks so much WindowColorCenter (talk) 20:53, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
- By creating a page with a disambiguator in the title. For example Guillotine is about what you would expect it to be about, as the main topic, while Guillotine (band) is about a band by the same name and Guillotine (wrestling) is about a wrestling move. How do I edit the Charles Darwin page?
I want to edit the Charles Darwin page but see that there is a note saying I should go to this page if I want to do that. Please could someone explain how I should proceed. The edits I would like to make are described below.
It should be made clear that in "The Origin" Darwin attributes several adaptions to what he calls "use and disuse" which involves the inheritance of acquired characterists which is a component of Lamark's theory of evolution. Currently the article mentions that three of Darwin's contemporaries (Robert Grant, Ernst Haeckel and Herbert Spencer) held Lamarkian views. It also describes one of Darwin's notes as dismissing as absurd the Lamarkian view of progression to higher forms. This strongly gives the impression that Darwin had discarded Larmarkian thinking which is wrong. Darwin argues for Lamarkian evoutionary mechanisms in "The Origin" and even more so in the later editions and other subsequent published material.
It should also be stated in the article that Darwin did not understand that natural selection was responsible for species conformity (stabilizing selection) and this led him to articulate, in "The Origin" a confusing theory about the nature of variation.
These two issues (which in fact I think are intimately related to each other but I will not explain why here as that is my personal opinion) are interesting and noteworthy and by including them in the article will give a fuller, more balanced and more interesting account of Darwin.

What could I add to fix my page?
Hello! I made a Wikipedia page for an album last night. I entered it in for submission and it got declined. Does anybody know what else I could add in to get it approved? I worked very hard on it. How to prevent the Wikidata template from returning multiple values?
Hi Teahouse!
I was trying to figure out why one of the boxes in Comparison of Java virtual machines said "Error: first parameter cannot be parsed as a date or time." From what I figured out, Template:Start date and age was unhappy because it was getting multiple values from Wikidata:
{{Start date and age|{{wikidata|qualifier|Q16928072|P348|P577}}}}
The inner Template:Wikidata was looking up the item Q16928072 (GraalVM), the property P348 (software version), and then the qualifier P577 (publication date). It seems that a bot came along and marked an older "software version" as preferred. The last added "software version" was also marked as preferred.
The command {{wikidata|qualifier|
is meant to return a single qualifier, but because there were 2 preferred "software version" properties, it retrieved 2 "publication date" qualifiers, like so:
20 November 2019; 13 June 2023; Error: first parameter cannot be parsed as a date or time.
The versions happened to be out of date, so I tried my hand at updating the Wikidata item. I also unmarked the bot's preferred ranking. For now the box correctly reads:
16 April 2024; 2 months ago
Does anyone know how to use Template:Wikidata to only choose the most recent date, regardless of preferred ranking? I don't know if my solution is the most robust, since another bot could reintroduce multiple values. Blepbob (talk) 00:43, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- According to Template:Wikidata/doc § cite note-fm-2, the
single
configuration flag should do what you want. jlwoodwa (talk) 08:29, 22 June 2024 (UTC)single
does limit the result to one, but I'm not sure if it supports sorting the dates by latest. For instance, if there are two preferred software versions with different dates, it seems to just pick the date for the first listed version.- Ah well, maybe the template doesn't support what I'm trying to describe. Thanks anyway. Blepbob (talk) 10:40, 22 June 2024 (UTC)

- Hello. The reliable source noticeboard is the best place to ask about reliability of sources. Note that the reliability of a source depends on many factors, including precisely what information the source is being used to support. A book from a reputable publisher more than a hundred years ago may be a very good source for some things, but I would be dubious about what an English (presumably) writer in the 1920s had to say about sensitive cultural issues in seventeenth century India. We are interested in evidence instead of groundless suspicions. You have offered none of the former and plenty of the latter. Cullen328 (talk) 15:37, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- SafariScribe is an experienced draft reviewer, also active in moving flawed new articles to draft ('draftify') and nominating articles for deletion. Declining your (completely inadequate) draft was normal procedure. You next proper step is to either attempt to improve your draft before resubmitting or else asking that an Administrator delete it. Continuing to attack SafariScribe will likely lead to your account being indefinitely blocked for incivility and not being here to contribute to the encyclopedia. David notMD (talk) 14:09, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- And I am a student in the Bay Area who has considered a program at CIIS, which they are connected to. RoseAliceD (talk) 13:59, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- Well please look at Safari Scribe's talk page before you insult my writing. Someone else commented that they were doing something suspicious on their talk page and you're assuming that they are a human with feelings, not some kind of scam. Please do me a favor and have a look at their talk page. RoseAliceD (talk) 13:59, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- RoseAliceD, you submitted a two sentence piece of junk that is nowhere near being an acceptable encyclopedia article, and you chose to attack and insult the volunteer reviewer, a human with feelings, instead of improving the draft. Is that the level of excellence taught at the San Francisco institution you are writing about? By the way, please fully and accurately describe your connection to the entity called "Entheogenic Research, Integration, and Education". Cullen328 (talk) 08:16, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
Closing a merge
Can i close the merge at Talk:List of current Iran governors-general#Merge the Articles of Some Governors General to This Article If so , how? AlexBobCharles (talk) 09:29, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, by following the instructions at WP:MERGECLOSE. I've taken the liberty of closing the merge for you; seems straightforward to me. (Full disclosure: I also undid the nominator's edits of your comments (!!) before closing; hope you don't mind those reversions.) Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 10:15, 22 June 2024 (UTC)

Will including this story in an article run up against BLP?
This article is the only sourced piece I can find about this possible controversy: https://www.calcalistech.com/ctechnews/article/b1a1jn00hc, in the interests of not violating BLP, is this substantial enough for inclusion in the Gili Raanan article? Smallangryplanet (talk) 12:26, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Smallangryplanet Calcalist seems to be a valid source, although it has not been discussed at WP:RSPS. The article is quite long and clearly Raanan knows about it since it includes comments from him. Thus I think it is valid to include material from that article provided you do so neutrally and without undue weight. In particular, I would avoid using the word "controversy": The article is critical but does not seem to be trying to be controversial. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:59, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- That makes sense! Thanks very much @Michael D. Turnbull. Smallangryplanet (talk) 14:01, 22 June 2024 (UTC)

Inappropriate link
I was reading a wikipedia article on the great recession and clicked a link for housing bubble and content regarding Madonna appeared. How do I report that inappropriate link? 96.230.231.165 (talk) 14:15, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- IP editor. Please do so here and someone will take a look at it. Just provide a Wikilink to the article where you found the issue (and the precise place you clicked if the article is a long one). Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:19, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- The article seems to be Great Recession which mentions housing bubbles in several places. I can't currently see the issue being reported. Can you specify the section or citation number, please, IP editor? Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:23, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- I cannot find a problem with the link now. The link is working correctly now for me. There were also other links that also went to the same Madonna page. 96.230.231.165 (talk) 14:43, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- If several different links took you to the same dubious page, the obvious thought is that it is your browser which was compromised. Are you now using a different browser or device? ColinFine (talk) 17:18, 22 June 2024 (UTC)

Saddle Tramp vs Cowboy
While creating the subject article Mesannie Wilkins (Last of the Saddle Tramps), I realized there was no article I could link that defined what a "Saddle Tramp" actually was: Saddle Tramp. WP states: "A saddle tramp is a nomadic cowboy" and links to cowboy; which is incorrect. A Saddle Tramp is specifically "a person who wanders from place to place on horseback." It even equates itself to modern times for a person who does not drive a car and has no shame in asking for a lift: "I had to take that saddle tramp home from work again today." It has nothing to do with herding cattle from one territory to another for months at a time. Obviously WP would benefit from the correction by creating an article for "Saddle Tramp"; however, how would I go about dealing with the disambiguation page already created for the term Saddle Tramp? Would I redirect the page to Saddle Tramp and head the article with: "For other uses, see Saddle Tramp (disambiguation)"? Thanks. Maineartists (talk) 15:20, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- That seems like a reasonable course of action. Since the definition of "saddle tramp" would be the primary topic, the existing disambiguation page can be defined as such with the (disambiguation) after it. Same logic is defined at WP:D2D. Reconrabbit 15:46, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Maineartists Note that Wiktionary does have an entry for wikt:saddle tramp with a definition agreeing with you. Hence you could use that on DAB pages and elsewhere. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:06, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
Eloise R. Weld information
I cannot find information about author, Eloise R. Weld who has two books: "Engagement" and "Ring of Gold" (1978) which is a sequel to her first novel, 'Engagement"
Book cover info on back jacket cover about Eloise R. Weld says: Eloise R. Weld grew up in the world about which she writes. She and her husband live in New York and have a farm in Pennsylvania where they raise steeplechase horses and cattle. RING OF GOLD is a sequel to her first novel, Engagement.
Can information about her and her books be included in Wikipedia? Logan-713 (talk) 15:46, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- There is no article about Weld. You could attempt one via WP:YFA, but new editors are strongly advised to gain experience improving existing articles before trying to create one. David notMD (talk) 16:03, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Logan-713. Only two books? Weld would need to meet the criteria outlined at WP:NAUTHOR, which does not appear to be the case. Shantavira|feed me 16:37, 22 June 2024 (UTC)

Request For Help
Hi. I apologize if I am posting this request for help in the wrong place; I'm doing so because I have been blocked from all the other Wikimedia sites, and when I try to write to the person who has blocked me, I receive messages that I have been blocked. This seems to have originated at Wikisource, and I have never made any type of edit to Wikisource. The edits I've made over the years are few in number and have always been constructive.
There are two entities that have blocked me: 1) User:Jan.Kamenicek, and 2) Something called Epic, which has blocked me until 2007; the page in which Epic announced that I am blocked seems to have disappeared now, but I am still blocked.
I have not made any edits to any Wikimedia sites in recent history. On the few occasions that I have made edits to Wikipedia, I have done so while logged in to my account name, "Enactataph". My edits have always been constructive.
Again, I have never made any edit on Wikisource. This is what Jan Kamenicek determined:
This IP address is currently blocked. The latest block log entry is provided below for reference:
- 20:54, 10 October 2023 Jan.Kamenicek talk contribs blocked 2401:4900::/32 talk with an expiration time of 2 years, 12 hours, 21 minutes and 36 seconds (anonymous users only, account creation disabled) (Vandalism)
If Jan Kamenicek and Epic had messaged me about some concern about an IP address, we could have happily clarified the matter by email. I tried to do so, but I seem to be blocked everywhere but here.
I followed the administrative and help links associated with the blocks imposed by Jan Kamenicek and Epic, but these links led to further messages that I was blocked and could not write a message or ask a discussion question. Therefore, I'm writing here, as it's the only source I can access.
Thank you for your consideration and any help you can suggest about this matter.
Sincerely, Enactataph Enactataph (talk) 16:51, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- User:EPIC, how's your day going? Drmies (talk) 16:53, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the ping. To answer Drmies, I'm doing well and my day is going the same. As for the issues with the global block, which block are you affected by? The /32 range you have specified is not globally blocked, but I see two /64 ranges which I blocked four days ago. I don't know which of them, but in either case, if you are still affected, please email us at stewardswikimedia.org with the relevant information and we will assist you. Regarding the enwikisource block, the block was placed on a large range, meaning it can be expected that it will affect some innocent users. I've tried force creating a local account for you, since the block only affects anonymous users, meaning you should be able to log in and edit there if you want to. Jacksonville Int'l Airport sourcing issue
Hello. Go to above article, scroll down to statistics, then Annual traffic, reference #38. It will not go to the pdf, however, right above Annual traffic, in Statistics, Passenger traffic, click reference #37, goes to the exact PDF that I want. I typed in the url exactly the way it is from that section but it doesnt link up to it. Hope you can fix it. Thanks and have a good day.Theairportman33531 (talk) 16:54, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Theairportman33531 Both those refs are giving me 404 errors. I think you have the URLs wrong as I can find the same info at the Internet archive. Note lack of final "s" and presence of "www". If the two references you want to use are to the same .pdf, then you should use one named reference . Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:22, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
