Nellikuppam is a city and a municipality in Cuddalore district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census[1], Nellikuppam had a population of 44,191. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Nellikuppam has an average literacy rate of 69%,which is higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 61%. In Nellikuppam, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The local economy is predominantly agriculture based. It is also a historical city in which the East India Company established the East India Distilerries (E.I.D), the first distillery factory in India by the British. The company now called E.I.D Parry (owned by the Murugappa Group) produces and exports Sugar, Parry's chocolates and spirits.

Politics

Nellikuppam assembly constituency is part of Cuddalore (Lok Sabha constituency).[2]
