Shanghai International Studies University (simplified Chinese: 上海外国语大学; traditional Chinese: 上海外國語大學; pinyin: Shànghǎi Wàiguóyǔ Dàxué) is a research, teaching, and multidisciplinary university in Shanghai, People's Republic of China. It is considered one of the top two universities that specialize in teaching foreign languages in China. SISU has two campuses, one in Hongkou District and one in Songjiang District. The Hongkou campus is located in the center of Shanghai, covering 16.9 hectares. The Songjiang campus is in Shanghai's Songjiang New District, covering an area of 53.3 hectares. SISU was founded in December 1949, is a key university in China and one of the universities of Project 211, which is the Chinese government's endeavor aimed at strengthening about 100 institutions of higher education and key disciplinary areas as a national priority.
According to the university's policy, it is committed to cultivating foreign language students with «high-quality, multiple skills, international vision, spirit of innovation, and capacity of practice».
Faculty Structure
SISU comprises colleges and departments that offer associate bachelor, bachelor and postgraduate programs, programs for adults, network programs and programs for international students.
It provides thirty-one bachelor programs Seventeen language programs: English, Russian, German, French, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, Persian, Korean, Thai, Portuguese, Greek, Italian, Swedish, Dutch, Indonesian, and Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language; fourteen comprehensive programs: translation, international business & trade, finance, law, international politics, educational technology, journalism, radio & television news, advertising, information management & information system, business administration, accounting, English teaching and public relations. Additionally, another three language programs have been approved for recruitment, which are Hebrew, Vietnamese and Ukrainian.
There are twenty-three master's programs English language & literature, Russian language & literature, French language & literature, German language & literature, Japanese language & literature, Spanish language & literature, Arabic language & literature, foreign linguistics & applied linguistics, comparative literature & world literature, international relations, international trade, business management, educational technology, journalism, European language & literature, linguistics & applied linguistics, modern & contemporary Chinese literature, diplomacy, translation, Asian & African language & literature, communication, international politics, ideological & political education
There are also nine second-tier Ph.D. programs (English language & literature, Russian language & literature, French language & literature, German language & literature, Japanese language & literature, Arabic language & literature, translation, international relations, foreign linguistics & applied linguistics; among which translation is the only master’s and Ph.D. program in China, and international relations is the only non-language Ph.D. program in a language school), one first-tier Ph.D. program (foreign languages & literature), and one postdoctoral center (foreign language & literature), one national research center of humanities & social sciences (Middle East Research Institute), one undergraduate education base of non-universal languages (Italian, Portuguese and Greek), two national key programs (English and Russian), and three Shanghai key programs (English, Russian and Arabic).
Staff and students
SISU has a faculty with more than 300 professors and associate professors. SISU has a full-time enrolment of over 1100 postgraduate students, 5300 undergraduate students, 1000 college students, and 900 international students.
International Students’ Education
International Students' Education started to enroll oversea students in the late 1970s, SISU has been teaching Chinese as a foreign language. It now offers various programs at different levels, ranging from short-term Chinese lessons, degree and non-degree Chinese language programs to the Master’s and doctoral programs in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Over the past 30 years, these programs been offered to 10,000 international students from over 60 countries and regions. Currently there are more than 1,200 fulltime international students studying for long-term programs and around 400 for short-term academic visits and training.
The language teaching in SISU is regarded as its distinguishing feature. During the past 30 years, teaching Chinese as a foreign language has become a fast-developing discipline and currently has over 40 full-time teachers more than half of whom are professors and associate professors. A majority of them are the holders of the Certificate for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language and have had experience teaching Chinese abroad.
