Migrations

Seems to me that User:Okigbo (talk) should get a DYK credit for El emigrante, the first and only article this user has worked on. The article has been renamed and split into one on the story, one on the book, with Okigbo's edit's in the book article history, but I don't think that matters. If you check the history of Ella sigue de viaje and El emigrante (short story) together, the article was started on July 23, peaked at DYK size of 589 on July 25, shrank to 565 on July 27, then on August 1/2 jumped to 3092, so technically the article qualifies as 5x but Okigbo did not do the expand. I can't see anyone worrying about that. Should Luis Felipe Lomelí be puffed up to make a double? Aymatth2 (talk) 13:41, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

126, 128 and four words

Renumbered

126 and 128 do not seem to exist. The highways were renumbered in 2010, see map at right. In the new scheme, even-numbered highways run roughly north-south, with the numbers getting higher as you go from east to west, the highest being #68, the Jaisalmer - Barmer - Radhanpur segment of the old #15 in Rajasthan. this source gives what seems to be a definitive list with the old numbers. 126 and 128 are not found. List of National Highways in India gives a rather chaotic set of lists, again with the old numbers, and again 126 and 128 are not found. I launched Template:Did you know nominations/El Emigrante & Luis Felipe Lomelí. I suppose the book could be added to make it a triple, but I am inclined to just leave it at two. There seem to be fewer new-number highways than old-number highways, probably due to rationalization. I would guess the renumbering was controversial. "As governor of Mizoram, 44A was my proudest achievement." The lists and articles need overhaul to show the new numbers - assuming they really did take effect. Google maps still shows the old numbers. I am not going there. Feel free to add the book to the nom, though. I just thought it was a bit repetitive. Aymatth2 (talk) 12:54, 5 August 2012 (UTC)

On that note, can someone look over List of National Highways in India and List of National Highways in India by highway number? Is there any reason to have two lists? It might also be necessary to redirect 126 and 128 to their renamed roads. It is complicated. First, 126 and 128 do not seem to be the numbers of highways under either the old or the new schemes, so these stubs should presumably be scrapped. Second, the change in numbering plan was not just a question of replacing one number with another. A highway is a collection of road segments. A new highway may include segments from several old highways, and the segments in one old highway may have been distributed among several new highways. Third, it is not clear that the new numbering scheme has actually taken effect. I agree that having two lists with the old numbers seems redundant, but think it needs an informed discussion on the talk page of one of them before deciding the best way to clean up the mess. I may launch that. Then we have to decide what to do with the articles on individual highways. The old national Highway 16 (India) running from Nizamabad to Jagdalpur has nothing to do with the new National Highway 16 (India) connecting Kolkata to Chennai. Tedious stuff. Yeah, I went over before getting it to GA, but didn't bring any money, so couldn't get anything. They had some leaflets and pamphlets, and possibly a big book for reference only, but I was concerned about it seeming to be self-published. I'd say the article already has enough third-party reliable sources to allow one or two detailed publications published by the church. You can only go by what material is actually available, and if the local register/leaflets and such help then go for it. I know some people have often used information off of plaques and things from churches or whatever as sources on here. I am sending this note to Wikipedians with whom I have most closely collaborated over the last six years or so. After pondering hard during a month's wiki-break in July I have sadly decided to withdraw fully from contributing. I have been worn down by continual carping, sniping and belittling from a wearisome few (you know the sort of people I refer to); the joy has gone out of taking part in this wonderful enterprise. I should be more resilient, but alas it's finally got to me.

I preferred not to – my experience with WikiProject Military History is that task forces end up being pushed aside or ignored when there is too much to handle as the project expands article-wise, but interest drops contribution-wise due to lack of interest, motivation, poor coordination, etc. "Films" encompasses such a massive area, if they wanted to do drives and such Westerns would be pushed aside for those drives. Talk pages become cluttered, and momentum is quickly lost. I don't see the benefit in task forces in some cases. Given that the majority of Western articles are currently unadministered by any project favourably, including Films and United States, I hope a focused WikiProject might have more success.. even if it only lasts a year or two, it might achieve enough to improve the condition of about 5000 articles potentially within its scope. Now that the proposal is being pushed ahead, having received a little support, and bolstered by my own determination to get it going, I hope you find time to partake once it is up and running within the next few weeks, hopefully. Africa status

Just letting you know. I am still going through the 1st edition of the old Appiah/Gates "Africana" encyclopedia, and tagging all the relevant articles as being of Top importance to WikiProject Africa and, where reasonable, for the appropriate subprojects. The main list of articles is at User:John Carter/Africa articles, which lists all the articles in the second edition. I have gone through the obvious matches, and am now going through the articles relating to the "African diaspora" and tagging them for WikiProject African diaspora, as being of Top importance. Once that is done, I intend to go to the second edition, which is rather larger, and do the same for any articles which weren't in the first edition. It will take quite a while, though, because a lot of these articles, particularly those relating to ethnic groups, periods of history, and the like have potentially multiple titles, and I am going to have to go through quite a few of them individually to see what title, if any, we might have an article on.

Also, for what it might be worth, I have gotten around to starting doing many of the subcats of Category:Protected areas of Africa. There are probably individual subcats for the World Heritage Sites of most of the areas involved, though, and I haven't yet finished going through all of them. Once all this is done, and I go about creating at least basic articles on some of the missing ones, I think it will be a lot easier to go around and request bot tagging for the various African articles. That tends to require a fairly long list of categories to tag, though, and it might take a week or two once I finish with the Africana articles to get all the requests together. The 2010 Census data released so far only include the localities with the population of at least 3,000; smaller ones are only included if they serve as the district administrative centers. I don't know why your name popped into my head when I thought of the whole bilateral relations articles affair. But you'll do. I'm working on Sagaan Ubgen, and I've been doing a lot of reading. I tripped over something that would support an entire article on Mongolia–Japan relations. It's Sanders 2010, pp. 356–360 and it starts in the 13th century and goes all of the way to the 21st, passing through such things as the Mongolian-Soviet Mutual Assistance Protocol of 1936, the Battle of Khalkhyn Gol, and lots of ministerial progresses, along the way. I am a little late to the party, but would you like a picture of the Japanese embassy in Ulaanbaatar? I am sure you would. I can get one some time after the 20th of September, when I am in town I usually stay a short walk from it, and I will be there for a few days. Won't be in time for the DYK but would help the article I think. Also worth looking into (from what I have heard from someone I know here with dodgy connections) is that Japan is going to build (or finance?) a new airport in Ulaanbaatar, provided Mongolia builds a decent road to it. It's currently in process. It's slow going because I'm packing for college. Did you know that you have made an edit to 154,837 individual articles? That's insane! Ha, only 50,000. Do you ever use AWB yourself or are those all manual? I could send you the list of all of the pages you've contributed to (you can't make that list without a bot account). In any case, I've got it skipping all pages that don't contain "2012 Summer Olympics". We might miss a few if they don't contain that string, but it should grab almost everything. Maybe a better solution would be to grab a list of all of the biographies of people in the 2012 olympics then look for those that are people. Then look for those that are stubs. That should make a list of the ones you created and ones you didn't. It should also be faster than going through all of your contribs (which looks like it will take my computer 32 hours now). The only going for stubs aspect would be operating under the assumption that articles that are not stubs are likely to have the results already, but we could include those articles if you wanted. What do you think? On another note, I talked to my dad before contacting you (User:Pdvc19, virtually no edits) and he's interested in helping out once the list is created. I should be able to generate a list fairly straightforwardly manually of articles I created on olympic bios, but I may need some assistance wikifying the article links, removing non olympic edits from in between etc. I need a break just now will return in about 30 minutes and I'll do it then alright. Yeah, but if you compare it to 2007 for instance. I reached 300,000 edits by 2008 or 2009 I think, I'm considerably less productive than I was and I tend to edit in bursts. So much works needs doing on existing articles its sometimes difficult to know where to start. Its finding a balance of quality and quantity I think, somebody needs to do the groundwork but somebody also needs to be improving existing articles, particularly on important topics.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:57, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

How many missing articles on populated settlements are there? Based on my finding with China probably near 4 million in total, although for towns with population over 10,000 I'd say a few ten thousand maybe, most of them concentrated in China and some of the larger Asian countries like Iran, Kazakhstan and Saudi Arabia. With the exception of very small islands we have articles on every settlement for, almost all countries have articles missing on populated places, even UK and US have loads missing, but they are mostly hamlets and smaller villages missing.Tons of missing villages on European countries even ones like France which we have 36,000 commune articles for, Germany, Sweden etc. I was looking through Saudi Arabia yesterday and there are quite a lot of missing towns with a few thousand people in them. So probably 200 odd countries have missing articles on settlements. But as I say for some small islands like Mayotte, Comoros etc we've covered most of the places. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:30, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Yummy pie; thank you, amigo! So funny, but spaghetti is my fav meal, too. But with my spaghetti sauce, which is a take on my mom's spaghetti sauce; + a Willamette Valley Pinot Noir; + Tiramisu with peaberry coffee. My initial attempt to upload those buttons, which yes would be extremely helpful as they are functions I use all the time, has not been met with success. Such a bummer. So good to hear from you - it is amazing - just yesterday I was thinking of you and almost wrote to you when guests unexpectedly dropped over and that was the end of that. I have been struggling to get much work done as I am getting more and more bedridden and, although I have a marvellous table to hold my laptop computer which I can use while sitting up in bed, I seem to be getting fewer hours in each day as my back performs its slow collapse. To paraphrase the Rolling Stones: "Oh Doctor, dear Doctor, I'm damaged, there's a pain where there once was a back!"

That aside, life has been pretty good but I haven't been doing much on Wikipedia other than adding the odd image - largely because I have been asked by World Book Encyclopedia to write a number of short articles (3-400 words each) on early Chinese explorers, etc., for children in the 9-15 years of age bracket (aiming at 12 year olds). And they pay a small "honorarium" for each one! I have two more to do before I send the first batch of 7 into them - I'll let you know what happens. It is interesting to try to condense everything into 400 words and still make it interesting and yet easily readable for children. I have never attempted such a thing before.

Other than that I am still plugging away on my second book. The revised second edition of the first book is held up at the publishers - apparently they are having internal battles - but they say to leave it with them and, hopefully, all will be well when the dust settles. I must admit, though, I am a bit concerned.

Now, to your question - yes, I will have a look at Hohot and see if I have anything much here that could improve the article - but please give me a few days.
