Do you know how to do this?

I'm trying to revert Evergreen Cemetery (Adams County, Pennsylvania) back to its original name, Evergreen Cemetery (Gettysburg, Pennsylvania). (Technically, the original name was Evergreen Cemetery (Gettysburg, PA).) The directions say an administrator must do the move. Please take a look at the article and see if you agree. I appreciate your efforts. The article on Evergreen Cemetery and the one on its gatehouse seem to go to strange lengths to downplay their connections to Gettysburg. To me, Evergreen Cemetery (Gettysburg, Pennsylvania) is a FAR more useful name for the average user, even if the cemetery technically is outside the borough. I didn't find the Articles for Deletion discussion until after I left you the message.
I may be heading to Gettysburg next weekend. My nephew -- a sophomore at Penn -- wants to borrow a car to go to Gettysburg. If I tag along, I'll try to get photos of the last 20-or-so monuments that need images.

@Bri: I'm not entirely sure where the interviewer got that, probably the talk page at Jimbo Wales which I mentioned to her as background material. I did notice a couple of times she quoted others uncredited. Maybe @Nagle: as well. 3 points:

• I'm sure the Times of Israel knows the proper fair use standards in Israel.
• If that was you being quoted - I think you got some extra mileage beyond want you expected when you wrote it.

Zigzig20s I briefly looked at the two nominations and the nom photos. I won't have a chance to do a thorough reading until Monday, but it looks to me like 2 buildings in a similar style (but 1 without a tower) at the same address, but with different coordinates! And similar names. Something has to give. If you are in the neighborhood, visiting in person would probably help. I'll try looking at Google street view now. If you want to dispute the speedy deletion nomination, then follow the instructions in the template and use Template:di-replaceable fair use disputed. Moreover, you assertion that the book is discussed in detail seems incorrect; the book is mentioned by name a single time in Nathalia Holt#Works. The link to the external media site is not really sufficient per WP:NFCCP. In addition, as mentioned in WP:NFC#cite_note-3, it's not the book, but the cover art itself which needs to be the subject of discussion. If you can add discusion of this cover to the article (perhaps citing the external media as a reliable source), then this might possibly be considered NFCCP compliant. Absolutely not. The introduction is supposed to be a broad summary of the article, and the banner at the top is eminently deserved: the article needs to be written from secondary sources, not primary sources like news reports. I don't remember discussing your professional background before (whether on-wiki, by email, or face-to-face), but I don't see how that's relevant to the issue of the page presenting a grossly newsy style rather than being an encyclopedia article with equal weight on all periods of the organisation's history. Please educate yourself on the definition of a primary source in history: it's one written at the time of an event, in the context of that event (or a later-compiled record such as an oral history that presents a participant's perspective), while a secondary source is written later based on primary sources. Can you find me Ph.D. dissertations in history, or JAH or AHR articles, that include news reports in their literature reviews, for example? Instead, you'll find plenty of Ph.D. dissertations in history and articles in those journals that rely on news reports as primary sources. The idea of a news report being a secondary source for the event in question is an idea that departs significantly from the prevailing views or mainstream views in its particular field, and it needs to be treated thus. FTC

Hi Smallbones, I was reading this FTC document recently: "Native Advertising: A Guide for Businesses", Federal Trade Commission, December 2015.

In its discussion of native advertising, it seems to describe perfectly the problem we experience. Native advertising, according to the WP article, is "a type of advertising, mostly online, that matches the form and function of the platform upon which it appears".

The FTC says: "[A]n ad is deceptive if it promotes the benefits and attributes of goods and services, but is not readily identifiable to consumers as an ad. Thus, as the Policy Statement explains, the FTC will find an ad's format deceptive if the ad materially misleads consumers about its commercial nature, including through an express or implied misrepresentation that it comes from a party other than the sponsoring advertiser."

One I objected to not long ago was Whistle (company). This purports to be an article about a new company, a subsidiary of Mars Petcare. In fact, the article is an example of native advertising of the company's sole product, a pet tracker. Someone cleaned it up a bit recently, but earlier versions (e.g. [2]) focused even more on the product. When I last checked, the sources were articles by reporters who had been sent pet trackers by the company to test. So the company created the sources, then paid someone to create an article based on those sources—an article purportedly about a company but in fact about a product.

I recall that you were in touch with the FTC years ago. Did anything useful come of that, and what do you think about approaching them again with some examples? SarahSV ^(talk) 20:38, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

Dennis Hastert

I have undone an edit in regard to Dennis Hastert in the category of prisoners and detainees of the United States government. Hastert has served his time and it would appear he no longer fits the category as he is no longer a prisoner and or detainee of the US government. I can understand why he would be listed in the category at the time of incarceration. However, now that he is no longer imprisoned he does not seem to fit the parameter. Happy New Year to you. Scams

It seems as if there is now some overlap in our efforts. It wasn't my intention, but after seeing the early thread on Wales' tp today, I started the one on mine. Wales' tp is a place I watch occasionally when an interesting ES pops upon my watchlist, but I very rarely comment there. It has its use, but IMO is basically WP's soap, and Jimmy himself, understandably, only chimes in occasionally. Anyway, what I mean to say is that today's discussions are a clear example of why a dedicated workgroup is required that can bring all the talk into one place, and possibly James' suggestion, which got consensus, for a special functionary group to deal with these issues should now begin to be physically put together. I don't mind the groundwork being on the user sub page I created this morning, but I don't really want to be again in the vanguard of an important campaign. Hey Smallbones. Looking back at the discussion on WT:RFA regarding the fourth question, I'm not happy with how I presented my argument. I didn't mean to reference the moral panics as an attack on your work; my intent was to show that, while some proposals have been good, others seem more directed at the people than the underlying problem of subtle promotional edits being made. It was a poor wording choice to make, and so I apologize for that. If I participate in future discussions on the topic, I'll try to find more constructive ways of getting my point across. Lourdes pretty much got my intent correctly - in a climate where we're struggling to recruit admin candidates, we need as few obstacles as we can get. It is possible to do good work on WP for pay (eg: adding sources for all unreferenced BLPs is something that just isn't going to happen voluntarily), just that most of what we currently call "paid editing" is simply bad paid editing and lumping all of it together means the type of grunt-work I'd like to see isn't going to happen. In the section you removed were two rankings in which locations of theirs are included, an award that is handed out annualy and a one-off honorable mention, wherefore I cannot quite see how they all fit the same category. Also, the reliable sources that were used to source the reception section are still present in the reflist template, wherefore they display errors and should be removed from it if the section stays out of the article. When indenting a talk-page reply, then I insert paragraph-tags "<p>" to indent all of the reply to the same level, coded as ":::Text.<p>Paragraph2.<p>Paragraph3". Peer review newsletter #1

Introduction

Hello to all! I do not intend to write a regular peer review newsletter but there does occasionally come a time when those interested in contributing to peer review should be contacted, and now is one. I've mailed this out to everyone on the peer review volunteers list, and some editors that have contributed to past discussions. Apologies if I've left you off or contacted you and you didn't want it. Next time there is a newsletter / mass message it will be opt in (here), I'll talk about this below - but first:

• THANK YOU! I want to thank you for your contributions and for volunteering on the list to help out at peer review. Thank you!
• Peer review is useful! It's good to have an active peer review process. This is often the way that we help new or developing editors understand our ways, and improve the quality of their editing - so it fills an important and necessary gap between the teahouse (kindly introduction to our Wikiways) and GA and FA reviews (specific standards uphelp according to a set of quality criteria). And we should try and improve this process where possible (automate, simplify) so it can be used and maintained easily.

It can get quite lonely tinkering with peer review...

With a bit of effort we can renovate the place to look like this!

Update #1: the peer review volunteers list is changing

The list is here in case you've forgotten: WP:PRV. Kadane has kindly offered to create a bot that will ping editors on the volunteers list with unanswered reviews in their chosen subject areas every so often. You can choose the time interval by changing the "contact" parameter. Options are "never", "monthly", "quarterly", "halfyearly", and "annually". For example:

• {{PRV|JohnSmith|History of engineering|contact=monthly}} - if placed in the "History" section, JohnSmith will receive an automatic update every month about unanswered peer reviews relating to history.
• {{PRV|JaneSmith|Mesopotamian geography, Norwegian fjords|contact=annually}} - if placed in the "Geography" section, JaneSmith will receive an automatic update every yearly about unanswered peer reviews in the geography area.

We can at this stage only use the broad peer review section titles to guide what reviews you'd like, but that's better than nothing! You can also set an interest in multiple separate subject areas that will be updated at different times.

Update #2: a (lean) WikiProject Peer review

I don't think we need a WikiProject with a giant bureaucracy nor all sorts of whiz-bang features. However over the last few years I've found there are times when it would have been useful to have a list of editors that would like to contribute to discussions about the peer review process (e.g. instructions, layout, automation, simplification etc.). Also, it can get kind of lonely on the talk page as I am (correct me if I'm wrong) the only regular contributor, with most editors moving on after 6 - 12 months.

So, I've decided to create "WikiProject Peer review". If you'd like to contribute to the WikiProject, or make yourself available for future newsletters or contact, please add yourself to the list of members.

Update #3: advertising

We plan to do some advertising of peer review, to let editors know about it and how to volunteer to help, at a couple of different venues (Signpost, Village pump, Teahouse etc.) - but have been waiting until we get this bot + WikiProject set up so we have a way to help interested editors make more enduring contributions. So consider yourself forewarned!

The Isaac Cocks House photo

I have long suspected the house is the one visible from the Thruway when passing the SKAC property, since that house does better fit the description. It would be at the end of the road on which that particular photographer was. I may, at one time, have attempted to take that picture from the Thruway with the leaves down as they are in the Street View image; I don't know if I still have it.

The nomination forms for a lot of the buildings listed around that time are very sketchy; not much was required. Indeed, a lot of the properties in Cornwall from that particular MPS (I think it was) are poorly documented and (I think) in some cases nonexistent. The coords on this one aren't right, I can tell you that (they put you on empty land).

I don't think the security guard would have been the best person to ask. I will perhaps have to take it upon myself to get on the horn with the art center staff myself, or the Cornwall town historian. Daniel Case (talk) 21:39, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

Engine Company 29, in Washington, D.C.

Engine Company 29 is the only Washington, D.C. redlink in new List of fire stations. I see it is linked from a "To do" list page of yours, but not from any of the NRHP list-articles for Washington D.C. It is mentioned as a research problem question at a Talk page by me, when dividing the D.C. NRHP tables years ago. User:DanTD comments there about uncategorized photos being available for it. It is apparently NRHP-listed; there is Elkman generator coverage of it. Could you possibly please go ahead and create the article, and put it into whichever is the proper list-article? I bet it would be a bit easier for you than me to figure it out. I'm gonna try to work forward on doing most of rest of the 115 or so redlinks there, otherwise. Not a problem if you don't want to do that, i will start it eventually, and i can probably eventually figure out which neighborhood list-article it belongs to. I do believe you are more familiar with D.C. than I am, though, and I wonder if you have used the "District of Columbia Inventory of Historic Sites" document put out by DC Office of Planning. I just used it in re-creating another redlink that I found, for Truck Company F (article was a Candleabracadbra creation moved to userspace and eventually deleted by Nyttend i think). @Doncram: I know D.C. a little (esp. NW), although not that specific fire house. Regarding the firehouse at 4811 MacArthur NW: It appears to be at the intersection of several neighborhoods (probably not uncommon for many fire stations, at least those I know of). According to our articles, it appears to be in The_Palisades,_Washington,_D.C., even though Google maps has a southern boundary for the Palisades that is too far north (Palisades in Google maps). Two articles call it the "Palisades firehouse" [9] [10]. Zillow allows it in that neighborhood too [11]. I made arguments for two other neighborhoods, but I think I have ruled them out.

Thank you User:David Tornheim. I think i agreed with you at some recent AFD or somewhere else, i don't know where. Okay, I just created Engine Company 29 article and incorporated one of those sources you provided, and there is another source too about it being "Palisadesque". I inserted a row for it into "NRHP listings in western Washington DC", where I am pretty sure it does belong, and asserted there that it is in The Palisades neighborhood. I leave it to DC editors to question that if they like. The NRIS coordinates were way off in a different neighborhood; the new ones that I looked up point to a nice-looking Colonial Revival-style EMS/fire station, in Google satellite view. Hey, if you would care to develop the article any more that would be great, or to make any fixes in the list-article.

It was designed by British-born Albert L. Harris, who had no article until I just started one, who seems like an important D.C. architect, was Municipal Architect, seems to have designed bird house at the Zoo and many other works. If either of you were interested I would be happy to help develop the articles for a combo DYK, or just one about Harris.

Also there were some other loose ends mentioned by me back in 2009 at Talk:National Register of Historic Places listings in Washington, D.C.#Research issues and boundary increases to edit. Perhaps a chapel at Gallaudet College is separately listed in fact but is omitted by us, and perhaps there is another fire station omitted, I dunno. Doncram Glad to be of help. I'll take a look when I get a chance. I spent a little time with some of the neighborhoods nearby. Foxhall and Foxhall Crescent appear to have some quite amazing mansions that are not in the articles [12]. Do you think [13] would qualify as WP:RS to justify adding to the appropriate article(s)? I'm a bit surprised residents and others who know about these mansions have not already added more of these!

What image? I just mentioned at Talk:List of RHPs in DC that i can't find an image, though DanTD had asserted that 3 images existed in 2013. Not sure what difficulty you might refer to, about uploading a pic to Commons, or about including a Commons pic into an NRHP infobox or an NRHP list-article. None seems hard to me right now, perhaps you will find it easy now too. Perhaps you could clarify.

About the WashingtonLife source on great estates, it looks good to me, and I just added mention to wp:NRHPHELPDC. You provided 2 links, both to the same site. The worldwide List of fire stations will keep me busy for a while, especially because i got surprising help/discussion at wp:AWNB which led to my learning a bunch more about the historic registers of Australia's various states, and which led to addition of a lot of Australia fire station redlinks that need to be turned blue. This has been discussed extensively at [14] (See the bottom 4 or 5 bullet points there). In short, the crytopress is not considered to be reliable in any case. If you can't write something without including an unreliable source, you shouldn't be writing it.

The staff writer situation is slightly different. The consensus seems to be that Forbes staff writers produce reliable articles, but that the "contributors" are essentially bloggers who produce very low quality material. Smallbones_(smalltalk) 04:42, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

Removing non-RS

Hey Smallbones, really appreciate your work removing non-reliable sources, e.g. on Bytecoin (cryptocurrency). I was curious what the next step for pages like this should be. Before your edit, the page contained many unreliably-sourced statements; now it contains completely unsourced statements instead. This seems problematic. For now, I added an "Unreferenced section" template, but the page is in really poor shape. I have half a mind to remove all the unsourced statements and leave the page as a stub. Any thoughts?

Intelligence Squared

Hello Smallbones, I am sorry but I strongly disagree with the addition of such debate links about current political issues as "examples". To be clear, I sympathize with the concerns that have been raised and discussed in such debates. But Wikipedia articles should stay free of any kind of advocacy, including good causes which we personally support. Also, readers know what a political debate is without the need of particular visual examples. If any noteworthy debates have been covered in truely independent reliable sources (as mentioned in the article's AfD nomination), these particular debates could be briefly mentioned in the article in due weight and from an uninvolved point of view. I have added a short talkpage notice about the general usage of debate ELs (without independent sources) in this article, if you'd like to discuss this issue further. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process.
