The Osmania University (OU) is a public state university located in Hyderabad, India, founded in 1918. [1] It was established and named after the last Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan. [2] It is one of the oldest modern universities in India. It is the first Indian university to have Urdu as one of the medium of instruction.[1]

In 2012, the University is placed Sixth among the Nation's Premier Universities in Humanities, Sciences and Commerce stream, which bagged the University with Potential for Excellence status.[3] On the other hand, the Main Campus University is ranked Tenth among the State Universities, as published by India Today.[4]

The OU is one of the largest university systems in the subcontinent with over 300,000 students on its campuses and affiliated colleges. It is particularly known for its faculty of Engineering and Technology, Law, Arts, Sciences, Commerce and Management departments. Osmania Medical College was once a part of the same system. However, It is now under the supervision of NTR University of Health Sciences.[5]

History

Osmania University was founded in 1918 by the Seventh Nizam of Hyderabad state, Nawab Mir Osman Ali Khan[6] for higher learning in India. It is the third oldest in southern India and the first to be established in the erstwhile princely State of Hyderabad.[7] For almost nine decades, it has sustained an integrated development of all faculties. It has contributed to the academic, social, and economic development of the region and the nation.[8]

Its alumni have distinguished themselves nationally and internationally.[9] The state government has appointed Prof S Satyanarayana as vice chancellor of Osmania University.Osmania University is accredited by the NAAC with an 'A' Grade and conferred with the status of 'University with Potential for Excellence' by the UGC, New Delhi.[10]

Main Campus

Osmania offers courses in Humanities, Arts, Sciences, Social Sciences, Law, Engineering, Medicine, Technology, Commerce and Business Management, Information Technology and Oriental Languages. In 2001, Osmania University had the distinction of being awarded the five-star status by the National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC) of the University Grants Commission, part of the Government of India.[11]

Osmania has a campus of nearly 1600 acres (6 km²). Osmania University is perhaps the largest higher education system in the country [14] It attracts students from all across the nation as well as from other countries. It is the home to nearly 300,000 students pursuing their higher studies in its campus, constituent affiliated colleges and district centres. Its faculty and staff number nearly 5,000.[15]

The College of Law is one of the top 15 Law schools in the country [16]
The College of Arts, one of the top 15 in the country, [17] is an architectural heritage structure similar to College of Sultan Hassan in Cairo, Egypt.[18][19]

Education, research and admissions

Osmania is a non-profit university which is funded and managed by the government. Admissions into bachelor of engineering, masters and doctoral programs is purely on a merit basis, evaluated by national entrance examinations for each of the courses offered. The research activities are funded by agencies like University Grants Commission, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Department of Biotechnology, Defence Research and Development Organisation, etc., which are autonomous agencies of government of India.

Telangana Movement

The Osmania University campus has turned out into the nerve centre for Telangana Movement. With series of pro-Telangana protests since November 2009. It was again rocked by student riots during the 48-hour Telangana bandh observed on July 5 and 6, 2011.[20] [21]
