Saiyuki (最遊記, Saiyūki) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kazuya Minekura. It was originally serialized in Square Enix's shōnen manga magazine Monthly GFantasy from September 1997 to February 2002, and later published in 9 tankōbon volumes by Ichijinsha from October 2002 to June 2003. The story is loosely based on the 16th century Chinese novel Journey to the West. The series follows a monk named Genjo Sanzo who receives a mission to travel to the west with a group of three youkai (devils) to stop anyone from reviving the evil god Gyumao.

Minekura's manga includes of two sequels, titled Saiyuki Reload and Saiyuki Reload Blast, as well as two prequels, titled Saiyuki Gaiden and Saiyuki Ibun. The series has spawned a media franchise that includes five anime series. A 50-episode anime television series, titled Gensomaden Saiyuki produced by Pierrot, aired from April 2000 to March 2001. The series won the twenty-third Annual Animage Anime Grand Prix Award. Additionally, the studio has developed an anime film adaptation, as well as two anime sequel series titled Saiyuki Reload and Saiyuki Reload Gunlock which together were broadcast in Japan from October 2003 to September 2004. Two other animes were produced, titled Saiyuki Reload Blast, by Platinum Vision in 2017, and Saiyuki Reload: Zeroin, by Liden Films in 2022. Three original video animations (OVA), nine stage musicals, a light novel adaptation, numerous video games, and drama CDs have also been made.

As of July 2017, the manga franchise had 25 million copies in circulation, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time. The Saiyuki franchise has become a mainstay of manga/anime culture, and its various entries have continually garnered critical praise and accolades.

Plot

The story begins in Shangri-La, an earthy paradise where humans and youkai (devils) cohabit peacefully. Then, the world is invaded by "Minus Waves", created by the taboo mixing of scientific research and magic in an attempt to resurrect Gyumao, an ancient and powerful evil god. The youkais return to their bestial habits, killing and devouring humans. Goddess Kanzeon sends Buddhist monk Genjo Sanzo and his three acolytes, Son Goku, Sha Gojyo, and Cho Hakkai to Tenjiku (India) to stop the curse and prevent Gyumao's resurrection.

Critical response

Manga

The manga has received critical praise and accolades criticism from various publications. NiDNiM of Manga News give above average score to first volume of the series and praises the manga art and calls it pleasing.[177] Also NiDNiM gave a 17 out of 20 Grade to the second and third volume and mentions the manga as very entertaining and surprising, and describes the pages as beautiful and accurate.[178][179] Later volumes were above average score,[180][181][182][183][184][185] and finally stating that "Saiyuki may be a quest, at its core, but it acts more as a motor for humor and development. atypical charisms. Against the backdrop of a mythological story, not very innovative, the author indeed plays a lot on flashbacks, which give depth to the characters while bringing the essential dramatic side, and the experience accumulated by our heroes. These learn from their mistakes and overcome their weaknesses."[186]

Eduardo M. Chavez of Anime on DVD reviewed the first volume, "For those looking for a fantasy title that with well-rounded characters with an Asian setting this is a good one. At the same it provides a slightly different twist on its characters that really pace this series with good humor and fun action. I like Saiyuki for its characters but the art could have turned me completely off if the writing wasn't good. The action is decent but it has never really left me feeling that the main characters were ever in much danger (too one sided to build tension). I really was surprised by the writing of Saiyuki. This being an old tale that has been done quite a few ways I wondered what Minekura would bring to the table to keep it fresh. But by giving his characters depth and making their struggles somewhat personal I was quickly drawn in."[2] Eduardo criticized Minkura's art and describes the second volume as "This story has been told quite a few times in Japan but Minekura keeps it fresh by working on the entire cast he has available. Giving most of his characters a little page time helps readers define relationships and motivations. There will always be questions to solve, but, like his characters, Minekura often deals with such things when the time comes. Why over-direct something that is already good, right. All of this makes for an enjoyable interpretation of a fun story full of action, comedy and great characters. this is one title that could enjoyed by a broad audience. As Saiyuki progresses I have to say I continue to be impressed by how fun this title is."[187] Also in the third volume eduardo gives a Very Good grade and stating "Minekura does not go into detail about Goku's background. She explains his power and the first meeting between Goku and Sanzo. What she does with Goku when his friend is in need is quite powerful. And the way Goku ends up learning about his role in this friendship is very touching and almost inspiring. What Minekura does with Sanzo is also rather poignant, With Minekura setting her roles Saiyuki appears to be going into a slightly new direction."[188]

Sarah of Anime UK News gave a 8 out of 10 Grade and described Saiyuki as "there’s no denying the raw energy and compelling storytelling it delivers. The glimpses it affords of tragic backstories for each of the protagonists draw the reader in, eager to learn more about what lies beneath their self-confident, worldly-wise swaggering; bad boys, traditionally, have had to develop tough exteriors to conceal their raw inner wounds. The excellent translation from the original Tokyopop edition (2002) by Alethea Nibley and Athena Nibley captures just the right tone of voice for the members of the Sanzo party, constantly arguing and joshing each other."[189]

Anime

Enoch Lau of THEM Anime Reviews gave the first series a three out of five stars, stating that "To be honest, I enjoyed Saiyuki. While the tone of the review might imply otherwise, I still found Saiyuki to be entertaining and fun for being corny (gee, I'm liking it for all the wrong reasons. I'm not a Buddhist, either). It would make an interesting story for people who haven't heard of Journey to the West, and many people will probably like it a lot more than me. Basically, if you can take the prods at religion and legend, then you could watch this."[190] Zac Bertschy of Anime News Network criticized the anime series but gave an average score to DVD 7: The Gods of War.[191][192]

Layla Lawlor and Barb Lien-Cooper of Sequential Tart give above average score to the series.[193][194] but Sheena McNeil of Sequential Tart gave a 9 out of 10 Grade, stating that "The story itself is definitely a new twist on the relationship between humans and demons as they normally get along peacefully. It also combines a quest with a "Good vs Evil" battle. All minor complaints aside, this DVD begins a quite excellent anime. Saiyuki's diverse themes and characters, along with its great story should appeal to a wide variety of anime lovers. Saiyuki should be on everyone's "must watch" list for 2003; it promises to be quite an adventure indeed."[195]

Later volumes of anime were also praised; Sequential Tart's Sheena McNeil praised the art style, gave a high score to Volume 3 of the series and tell "The artistic techniques used for backgrounds, flashbacks, etc are different from your everyday anime. Both sub and dub are quite excellent, the matching of tonal qualities is very good."[196] Barb Lien-Cooper Reviewing Saiyuki Volume 6: Demon Rising and stated "You never know what tone to expect with the series or where the plots will lead you next, Which, in my book, makes for great anime."[197]
