Using a DYK suggestion string (see below examples), list new suggestions in the candidate entries section below under the date the article was created or the expansion began (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged. Thanks for participating and please remember to check back for comments on your nomination.

DYK criteria

Official criteria: DYK rules and additional rules
  • DYK evaluation includes:
  • Length - The Article should contain at least 1,500 characters in main body text (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references, lists, and tables). This is a mandatory minimum; in practice, articles having more than 1,500 characters of prose still may be rejected as too short, at the discretion of the selecting administrators.
  • Verification - The DYK hook fact in the article needs an inline cite at the end of the sentence and the article in general should use inline, cited sources.
  • Date - The new article should be no more than five days old and the expanded article should be expanded at least fivefold with new text within the last five days.
  • Length
  • DYK qualifying characters: To count the number of characters in a piece of text, you will need to use a JavaScript extension like User:Dr pda/prosesize.js (instructions on the talk page), a free website like this, or an external software program that has a character-counting feature. For example, if you are using Microsoft Word, select the text from the article page (or, in the case of "Did you know" nominations, this Talk page) – not the edit page containing Wikitext – then copy and paste it into a blank document. Click "Tools" ("Review" in Office 2007), then "Word Count", and note the "Characters (with spaces)" figure. Other word processing programs may have a similar feature. For Mac users, Apple has a Word counter widget available for Mac OS X 10.4 or later. Note: The character counts indicated on "Revision history" pages are not accurate for DYK purposes as they include categories, infoboxes and similar text in articles, and comments and signatures in hooks on this page.
  • Lists: Proposed lists need 1,500+ characters of prose text. The listed items themselves are not counted as part the the 1,500 DYK qualifying characters
  • Verification
  • Suggested facts (the 'hook') should be:
    1. interesting to draw in a variety of readers,
    2. short and concise (fewer than about 200 characters, including spaces),
    3. neutral,
    4. definite facts that are mentioned in the article, and
    5. always cited in the article with an inline citation.
  • Please note that hooks are subject without notice to copyediting as they move to the main page. The nature of the DYK process makes it impractical to consult users over every such edit. In particular, hooks will be shortened if they are deemed too long: the 200-character limit is an outside limit, not a recommended length. Also, watch the suggestions page to ensure that no issues have been raised about your hook, because if you do not respond to issues raised your hook may not be featured at all.
  • Articles on living individuals must be carefully checked to ensure that no unsourced or poorly sourced negative material is included. Articles and hooks which focus unduly on negative aspects of living individuals should be avoided.
  • Other issues
  • Pictures: Pictures accompanying the DYK hook should be:
    1. freely licensed suitably and freely (PD, GFDL, CC etc) licensed (NOT fair use) because the main page can only have freely licensed pictures;
    2. suitable, attractive, and interesting at a 100x100px-wide resolution;
    3. already in the article; and
    4. relevant to the article.
  • Sounds: Sounds accompanying the DYK hook should have similar qualities to pictures, and should be formatted using {{DYK Listen|filename.ogg|Brief description}}

Sample DYK suggestion strings

Please use one of the strings below to post your DYK nomination, using the "author" and "nominator" fields to identify the users who should receive credit for their contributions if the hook is featured on the main page.

  1. Nom without image: {{subst:NewDYKnom | article= | hook=... that ? | author= }}
  2. Nom with image: {{subst:NewDYKnom | article= | hook=... that ? | author= | image= | caption= }}
    To include more than one new or expanded article in a single hook: |article2= |article3= |article4= | (etc)
    To include more than one author: |author2= |author3= | (etc)
    To include alternate hooks: |ALT1= |ALT2= | (etc)
    To add a comment: |comment=
    To add the article you reviewed: |reviewed=

Do not wikilink the article title, or the author username field; the template will wikilink them automatically. Do wikilink the article title in the hook field, however.
Do not add a section heading if you are using the template; the template will add one for you.
Do not include a signature (~~~~) after the template.
Do not use non-free images in your hook suggestion.

An example of how to use the template is given below:

{{subst:DYKsug
 | article   = Example
 | hook = ... that this [[article]] is an '''[[example]]''' ''(pictured)''?
 | creator   = Jimbo Wales
 | expander  =
 | nominator =
 | image     = Example.png
 | comment   =
}}
  • Note that you should only use one of the above templates for the original hook. If you want to suggest a second, alternative hook for the same article submission, just type it in manually. The above templates output useful code for each submission and if you employ them for alternative hooks, you will mess up the page formatting.
  • When saving your suggestion, please add the name of the suggested article to your edit summary.
  • Please check back for comments on your nomination. Responding to reasonable objections will help ensure that your article is listed.
  • If you nominate someone else's article, you can use {{subst:DYKNom}} to notify them. Usage: {{subst:DYKNom|Article name|November 9}} Thanks, ~~~~

Symbols

If you want to confirm that an article is ready to be placed on a later update, or that there is an issue with the article or hook, you may use the following symbols (optional) to point the issues out:

Symbol Code DYK Ready? Description
{{subst:DYKtick}} Yes No problems, ready for DYK
{{subst:DYKtickAGF}} Yes Article is ready for DYK, with a foreign-language or offline hook reference accepted in good faith
{{subst:DYK?}} Query DYK eligibility requires that an issue be addressed. Notify nominator with {{subst:DYKproblem|Article}}
{{subst:DYK?no}} Maybe DYK eligibility requires some additional work. Notify nominator with {{subst:DYKproblem|Article}}
{{subst:DYKno}} No Article is either completely ineligible, or else requires considerable work before becoming eligible

Please consider using {{subst:DYKproblem}} on the user's talk page, in case they do not notice if there is an issue.

Backlogged?

This page often seems to be backlogged. If the DYK template has not been updated for substantially more than 6 hours, it may be useful to attract the attention of one of the administrators who regularly updates the template. See the page Wikipedia:Did you know/Admins for a list of administrators who have volunteered to help with this project.

Where is my hook?

If you can't find the hook you submitted to this page, in most cases it means your article has been approved and is in the queue for display on the main page. You can check whether your hook has been moved to the queue by reviewing the queue listings at the bottom of this page.

If your hook is not in the queue or already on the main page, it has probably been deleted. Deletion occurs if the hook is more than about eight days old and has unresolved issues for which any discussion has gone stale. If you think your hook has been unfairly deleted, you can query its deletion on the discussion page, but as a general rule deleted hooks will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

  • The article has not been expanded enough, so far it's been expanded 3.1x. Also, the hook is implied but not explicitly stated (the article does not explicitly say the park has no lions). Shubinator (talk) 00:25, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • A bit on the short side. I get 1682 characters. Also, the reference is to a forum. The forum says the European Space Agency is its source [1], so this can easily be strengthened by putting in the ESA source instead of the forum. Shubinator (talk) 23:01, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Article hasn't been expanded enough, only 3.5x now by my count. Unfortunately tables and lists don't count. Also, to me the hook was a bit confusing because I didn't know that the promotion refers to WWE. Rephrasing to due to his contract with WWE would help. Shubinator (talk) 00:42, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Eh, I forgot to count. Your suggestion would work, but it makes no difference really since its not technically 5x.TRUCO 01:45, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • 249 character hook. Also, the hook is not explicitly stated in the article. The article has been expanded much more than 5x though. Also (this has nothing to do with DYK), I'd recommend moving the "See also" (now called "More info") before the References section per WP:ALSO. Shubinator (talk) 02:51, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oh gosh... I knew it's a lot more than 5x, but once I got started I wanted it to be worthy of Wiki and just kept going. I have moved the "See also" per your good advice. As for the hook... I was worried about that. I liked it, but in complete agreement with you, here's a shorter and more precise alternate:

This is the only example I've ever heard of a fungus being used as fish bait, thought that might warrant a DYK. Are any of the following more interesting to you? Sasata (talk) 16:35, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
ALT1 ... that Cookeina is a genus of cup fungus found in the tropics and subtropics?
ALT2 ... that Cookeina globosa, member of the fungal genus Cookeina, is known only from the Mbalmayo rain forest reserve in southern Cameroon?
ALT3 ... that Cookeina, a genus of tropical and subtropical cup fungi, have asci which mature simultaneously rather than in series?
In the original hook, does the offline source really mean a Malaysian town called "Peninsular"? It probably means Peninsular Malaysia (no comma, one link; it was once known as Malaya). The Peninsular link is about Spain. Art LaPella (talk) 02:24, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Note: Would prefer using the first hook and not the ALTs as the first hook contains two pieces of information—March sentencing to prison and reality show. The ALTs only have information on the show, but I just added those hooks there incase. ... that three former Wanderers players and Ireland rugby internationals – Tom Crean, Robert Johnston and Frederick Harvey – were all also awarded the Victoria Cross? Crean and Johnston served with the British Army during the Second Boer War while Harvey served with the Canadian Army during the First World War[1] … I know article has not been expanded 5x but I believe this fact is particularly noteworthy and unusual. It has to be more interesting then trivia about wrestlers, surely !!! Djln--Djln (talk) 00:00, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Very disappointed . Above answer is a lot of waffle. I really cannot be bothered reading reams and reams of unwritten rules ! Should’nt the criteria for this section be simply that fact might encourage people to read the articles further and that is cross checked as true. It is my opinion that DYK section has been extremely poor lately. I hav’nt been inspired to read an article in this section for months. And now I understand why. It has become the preserve of trainspotters, wrestling fans and pedantics ! I really do not see the point in trying to nominate anything. Djln --Djln (talk) 20:51, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sorry you feel that way, but the main problem isn't the newly renamed "Additional Rules" (formerly "Unwritten Rules"). It's the Main Page description "Did you know ... From Wikipedia's newest articles" (emphasis added), and our bureaucratic rules only clarify that this isn't a new article. Art LaPella (talk) 21:15, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Djln, quit complaining about how you "can't be bothered" to read the rules. First of all, the rule about expansion is prominently stated in the regular rules, not just the Additional Rules. Secondly, if you're too lazy to read the rules, then you really only have yourself to blame for not getting your article passed; people at DYK didn't force you to ignore the stnadards. Politizer talk/contribs 19:57, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • The whole point is to expand an article or create a new one, thus it's one of Wikipedia's "newest article" as stated on the Main Page. If all you do is add some stuff and come up with a catchy hook, how is it any special or interesting? Grsz11 20:07, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Great article, generally well sourced, but the rules do say that the hook fact must be directly followed by a reference in the text (I'm talking about the first hook here, which I prefer). Should be an easy fix. Lampman (talk) 14:38, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The fact is implied in the article. She only became a national "name" with a retrospective at the australian centre for photography in '85, and when the book came out in 1995. I'll summarise it in the introduction. She was "pioneer" because women in their own right were overlooked in the professions in that era but in a way she did make a career of it. Hope this makes sense, otherwise Xn4's alt is very helpful. Julia Rossi (talk) 23:08, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can't read Norwegian so I have to accept the reference in good faith but this claim seems awfully broad given the wide range of disabilities and the long history of Norway. Not one minister in all those year with colorblindness, dyslexia, or some other disability? I guess I'd feel better if either the scope of the hook were narrow or a Norwegian-fluent editor could assure me as to the contents of the source. - Dravecky (talk) 12:59, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The reference does say that, but as Dravecky says, it's a silly claim to make. Norwegian government ministries go back to 1814, and back then there was both less knowledge of, and less openness about disabilities, so than none of those ministers should have had any kind of disability is just a ridiculous claim. Just because a journalist says it, doesn't make it so. Of the top of my head I remember that Gudmund Hernes had dyslexia, which is considered a disability. I don't think this is a good hook. Lampman (talk) 14:25, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This source says she was the first to use crutches regularly at work, which sounds a bit more reasonable, though again I doubt the journalist has done the necessary research on 200 years of Norwegian government minsters. Lampman (talk) 14:30, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please suggest an improvement. As it says ...the painting "depicts" him being watched by the painter..this is quite unusual - usually painters do not depict themselves in paimtings. Can you suggest a way to make it less ambiguous? Victuallers (talk) 22:42, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's not usual but it happens as in Las Meninas which would make the alt hook okay (he was there and he painted it, and shows himself in the scene). It doesn't always follow an artist was present in order to paint a scene. Fwiw, Julia Rossi (talk) 06:00, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please note that IMDb is not inherently an unreliable source, as clarified in this debate. It's unclear in the hook if people remembered the food & drink while Parker was the archbishop and forgot after his successor took office, or people remembered the food & drink served during his time as the archbishop. I'm sure it's the latter, but the hook is a bit ambiguous. Is "while Archbishop of Tuam" associated with "remembered" or "served"? I don't know how to fix the hook, though. --74.14.16.33 (talk) 04:08, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I thought that was very clear: "Parker... was remembered", and "food and drink served"; "while Archbishop of Tuam" plainly refers to Parker, and not to a verb, as verbs can't become archbishops. Flight 1549 is currently featured on the In The News section. Therefore, I don't think we can have the double hook offered by Matthewedwards. Note that there are perhaps hundreds of people who expanded the article. I will notify them for DYK credit if this passes. These people should get credit, not only Jrsamples.

Also, my suggested hook doesn't restate what everyone knows, i.e. that Sully landed the plane. It highlights that he has a safety consulting firm (so he might really be a safety expert who safely landed the plane in the water) Chergles (talk) 19:30, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A Greek squat toilet
A Greek squat toilet
  • ALT by Politizer ... that the controversial sculpture Entropa, unveiled in Brussels on January 13, 2009, depicts Bulgaria as a series of squat toilets (example pictured)? Lots of possible hooks here, I just used the Bulgaria example because it seems to be the one to have generated the most outcry. Also, being a current event, this article is being edited very heavily so we might need to add more people to the credits later, or whatever. at 00:47, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
  • The picture looks great, as long as someone can ensure that we can use it here (ie, that it doesn't count as a derivative work). If we are free to use it, someone will probably want to crop it so that Bulgaria will show up bigger (since DYK images get scaled down to 100x100px). Politizer talk/contribs 06:07, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Recently, at Commons, someone replied to my question and gave an opinion that the photo is a derivative work and as such cannot be used at Commons but well in (English) Wikipedia as fair use. However, I now read at the top of this page, that fair use should not appear at DYN. That's a pity, since then probably no part of the sculpture may be used, and without it there is probably not much to show and stay relevant (or perhaps a general picture of a squat toilet would do and then the rest is shown in the article itself?). Blahma (talk) 16:58, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yeah, it sucks. You can't even show the picture on this page, whilst we're discussing it, despite other media using the pictures. The alt hook you have proposed leaves out the most important information. The DYK is 193 characters when you remove "that" and "(pictured)", two of the DYK-defined words that are not part of the DYK submission. When you leave "that" in, it is 198 chars. Adding "(pictured)", a parenthetical reference to the image that is not part of the informative content of the DYK, brings it to over 209 chars. The DYK can remain intact by removing the term "pictured" and if necessary, the image itself. It is acceptable to use the original DYK as the parenthetical is not technically part of the DYK and there is some flexibility here in regards to character count. The fact that the extremophile lives at greater than 70°C in hot springs at Yellowstone is essential information in the DYK, as this was the central thrust of Brock's scientific discovery; up until that point, most organisms were not thought to live anywhere on Earth at that temperature. And stating that this discovery was made in Yellowstone, a national park, is also important, as it was eventually used in private industry (PCR) by Kary Mullis, a subject of contention today by the NPS. Your alt hook effectively removes this overview of the most important facts related to Brock's discovery and glosses over it without regard to its necessity. I should also point out that you were recently involved in a dispute with me over character limits on Wikipedia_talk:Did_you_know#Character_limit and you are not a neutral party in this DYK, so I ask that you recuse yourself here due to your conflict with me over character limits on the talk page. Simple resolution, just take out the superfluous word "(pictured)" as shown in ALT2 above if it's a problem, and leave in the rest. Perhaps an alternative phrasing that gives the same fact would be better. - Mgm|(talk) 22:38, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • The article is too short by at least 200 characters, the hook only partially represents his situation as a driver in 1967, and unless his parents were time travellers from the 1980s there is no way he was named for the serial killer (and likewise the 1946-born serial killer of the same name could not have been named for the driver). With expansion, a better hook, and a good reference then this could perhaps be saved. (The dates check out okay.) - Dravecky (talk) 12:46, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Rephrased the hook. I'm not a native speaker of English and thought that namesake just means "has the same name" (as the German: Namensvetter), and does not claim "was named after". I stand corrected. Avoiding confusion and having a proper article to link to (eg from Günter Klass, see Jan 8 below) was my motivation to create the entry, listing at DYK should raise awareness not to link to the killer when the racer is meant. Expanded the article by well over 200 characters, too. -- Matthead  Discuß   13:33, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've added a hatnote to the serial killer's article that should help direct people looking for the race driver to the correct article. Length is good now but the hook still needs to be reworded for clarity. I can't think of one at this moment but perhaps some other enterprising editor can phrase this better. - Dravecky (talk) 20:26, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ALT HOOK: ... that British race driver Peter Sutcliffe was a Scuderia Ferrari factory driver in 1967?
ALT HOOK: ... that British sport car driver Peter Sutcliffe, who won the 'Grand Prix de Paris' and the 'Pietermaritzburg 3 hours', raced in Aston Martins, Jaguar D-Types, Shelby Cobra Daytonas, Ford GT40s and works Ferrari 330P4s? Autodidactyl (talk) 14:54, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, Grand Prix de Paris covers the equestrian event only. While he drove several interesting cars and races, I'd say that getting hired by the Ferrari factory team for Le Mans and the championship decider is the highlight of his (and almost any) career. That he seemingly retired after that kind of underlines this. And, as the serial killer seems to be very famous in the UK, I'd like to mention him for clarity in one form or the other. -- Matthead  Discuß   11:14, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Tightened/cleaned erroneous/pointless links.
It is surely inappropriate, unnecessary and somewhat tasteless to define a person/personality/hero of one generation via a shared name with a criminal of the next generation. He was a successful driver in his own right. Autodidactyl (talk) 15:39, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
ps. To avoid PoV and Original research, we should rely on reputable sources rather than impute reasons for his retirement.
I've reworded the final sentences, just stating that he did not race anymore, plus a mention of the death toll of the time. As for the hook, I'm running out of ideas. How about mentioning that he entered only one Formula race? -- Matthead  Discuß   09:35, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I was about to propose a hook about every (non-interim) Coyote coach before the Gretzky era had a winning record, based on Win% listed in the article. But then, how do you calculate Win%? The W's are less than half of GC's, so they should all have sub-.500 — losing! — records. Pls check your stats. Thx. --74.14.17.171 (talk) 16:11, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ALT1 ... that Bob Francis is the only Phoenix Coyotes head coach to have won the Jack Adams Award, having won it in the 2001–02 NHL season? -- SRE.K.Annoyomous.L.24 review me 08:55, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you want the focus on Bob Francis, you may want to fix up his stats. Winning only 165 out of 390 games coached is a losing record and the Win% cannot be above .500 as shown in the table. --74.14.16.33 (talk) 03:59, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I can see you're not familiar with hockey statistics. Read winning percentage. You will see that the Win% is the number of points divided the most possible points the coach can get. -- SRE.K.Annoyomous.L.24 review me 04:12, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You may want to explain this in your article, perhaps as a footnote to your table, as I'm sure I am not the only one who doesn't understand this. (And frankly, it's wrong! I love the line "The name "winning percentage" is actually a misnomer..." in the Winning percentage article. Thanks for the link.) --74.14.16.33 (talk) 06:14, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
