Where is my hook?

If you can't find the hook you submitted to this page, in most cases it means your article has been approved and is in the queue for display on the main page. You can check whether your hook has been moved to the queue by reviewing the queue listings.

If your hook is not in the queue or already on the main page, it has probably been deleted. Deletion occurs if the hook is more than about eight days old and has unresolved issues for which any discussion has gone stale. If you think your hook has been unfairly deleted, you can query its deletion on the discussion page, but as a general rule deleted hooks will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

Before anyone complains about the "length delta", go back in the article history to the last major version - it consists entirely of text copy and pasted from another source. The expansion is enough, but it isn't because "the last major version ... consists entirely of text copy and pasted from another source" (see Additional Rule A4). It's because that version consists mainly of a block quote, which isn't considered "prose" requiring expansion (Additional Rule A2), a list, and references, which also aren't "prose" (WP:DYK#Selection criteria 2.) I wish I could tell you, I can't find anything that says what her race was, but I can find numerous sources that say "of color."   • This article is totally based on primary sources (information from the Port authorities in the Tokyo Government). Wikipedia is based on the principles of mostly using secondary sources removed from the subject (WP:V). This should be so especially for information that could be contested such as claims of being the first as per this case. As I see it, the whole idea of DYK is to show new articles to readers. In this case a reader who is really interested in all 16 articles will find them all by reading the first. Even if that is not the purpose of DYK, I do know that the purpose of DYK does not include writing hooks in odd ways solely to get on a "hall of fame". IMO, this game of trying to cram the largest possible number of articles into a single hook is contrary to the purpose of DYK. The original hook proposed here is much too large to have any useful value in attracting attention to interesting new articles. If this is what Wikipedia:Did you know/Hall of Fame leads to, then perhaps the Hall of Fame should be abolished. --Orlady (talk) 18:02, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Second Orlady's comment. We have already been subject to some nasty criticism for perceived award-collecting behavior, and putting an overlinked mass on the Main Page just for one user's gratification would not be appropriate and would subject us to more unneeded wikidrama. (No intention there to offend you, Doug Coldwell—you've done impressive work here and, no matter what happens with this hook, we will still remember that you were able to write and nominate 16 articles at once—it's just that this kind of hook would not be beneficial for the DYK project or for readers.)
Besides, if you break this up into a couple hooks (assuming that a few of these article subjects are notable enough to be in a hook independent of Appomattox Court House National Historical Park), your articles would get more airtime and more attention.
Personally, I believe it would be better to merge all those sub-articles into Appomattox Court House National Historical Park (that might even make it a good candidate for FL or FA), but this is not the appropriate venue for that discussion; it might be worth discussing at that article's talk page, though. Suggest the below alternate hook of 14 articles which I believe would receive much airtime for all the articles involved, especially if it were to be the first hook in the Queue with its pictute. It isn't anything different than what has already been done for the 8, 9, and 11 article DYKs in the Wikipedia:Did you know/Hall of Fame.

Each of the period (Civil War) structures says in each article of that particular structure that the National Park Service says the structure is significant because it was in the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park (then the village of Appomattox Court House) at the time General Lee surrendered to General Grant. The end of the American Civil War has everything to do with each of these structures. The National Park Service has restored each of these structures because of this significance and they are all part of this history (the end of the American Civil War). Some have more important significance than others. For example: the McLean house is where Lee and Grant signed the surrender papers (picture of replica tables in the article). The Clover Hill Tavern is where the pardons (picture in the article of a typical parole) were printed for the Confederate soldiers, so they could return home with no hassle from others. --Doug Coldwell talk 19:46, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • While I totally agree with Punkmorten that the DYK no longer requires online sources, and that books are more reliable than newspaper articles, the newspaper Adresseavisen had an article on this in 2005. However, this has been removed from the online section, and is now only available through the paid service Atekst (that I, and perhaps also Punkmorten, have access to through our universities). The article was called "Trikken — elsket og hatet". So, with all due respect, the current DYK rules say that if all the other criteria are met, you have to except in good faith (unless you belive it to not be correct), especially from established authors. Obits have traditionally focussed on the good points of the deceased, so they may not present a fully-rounded picture - this is probably less true now than it has been in the past - and things like the ODNB do often use obits as sources, so this is not to say they shouldn't be sued, just try to find other sources too.   • Duly noted. I wasn't aware I'd used the ODNB for anything recently (other than some additional verification of details for the Lord Denning article. I didn't use the Gazette because I wasn't aware statements of fact need to be verified by multiple sources; yes, the Gazette says he was promoted to rank X, but so does the newspaper obit. With these three articles I did try and look for additional sourcing but could not find anything with what was available to me (the military and the sciences are two areas I don't deal with on a daily basis, leaving well, google).Ironholds (talk) 12:31, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sorry, I wasn't sayign that you had used ODNB recently, just trying to make the point that since they use obits as sources then they must be considered as a valid source for us to - but bearing in mind the possible issues. Obviously the gaette is factual only, but it's also definitive, I've seen obits which have got the dates and so on wrong, if you take the dates from the Gazette you've got the official record - it's the best possible source for those sorts of things - and at least it demonstrates that you ahve looked for other sources. Comment I agree that more people beside myself, as nominator, and Jrsamples, should gain credit. I apologise that I did not add some more people as collaborators. I don't think everyone who edited the article should be given DYK credit, though. Please don't think that I'm being selfish, or ungratful, I just think that most editors did relatively very minor work, such as correcting grammar, and do not warrant DYK credit. Looking at the revision history of the article, I suggest User:ERcheck, User:Chergles, User talk:75.73.218.164, User:Geo Swan, User:Space cadet65, User:Terrakyte, as well as the creator User:Jrsamples, should receive DYK criteria. Having said that, my suggestions take into account only those who have made more than 5 non-minor edits to the article. One person could have made but one edit, but it was really consequential. I will look through the edit history to find more people who could deserve DYK criteria. I believe the hook offered by Chergles can be improved; I believe less people will recognize "C.B. "Sully" Sullenberger", than Chesley Sullenberger or Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger. I also think that when Mjroots said that US Airways Flight 1549 couldn't be "bolded" in the hook, I don't think that meant it couldn't be included in the overall hook, though I could be wrong. I think US Airways Flight 1549 should be stated, since I believe more people will recognize the flight if the hook says something like "Flight 1549 in the Hudson River", than "an Airbus A320 in the Hudson River". I also think the image at the top of this discussion should be included with this hook, since hooks with pics seem to generally attract more attention. I also think that a lot of people, as you said Chergles, know now that he landed the plane. I think though a lot of people already know that he owns a safety consulting firm, though, and I don't think a lot of people know that he had "had gained the IQ necessary to join Mensa International at the age of 12", and that he "was an accident investigator for the USAF and NTSB".
