Miss Universe 2021 will be the 70th anniversary of the Miss Universe pageant, to be held in December 2021 in Eilat, Israel. Andrea Meza of Mexico will crown her successor at the end of the event.

The competition will feature the return of Steve Harvey as host and Fox as the official broadcaster of the show after being absent due the uncertainties related to the previous edition.

Background

Location and date

In January 2021, it was reported that the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) was in talks to host the 2021 edition of the competition in Costa Rica. The negotiations were later confirmed by Gustavo Segura, serving as the Minister of Tourism in the government of Costa Rica.[1][2] In May 2021, during an interview with People en Español, Andrea Meza stated that the 2021 edition of the competition would be held at the end of the year and acknowledged the fact that her reign would be one of the shortest in the history of the pageant.[3]

On July 20, 2021, the MUO confirmed that the competition would be held in Eilat, Israel in December 2021.[4]

Host

On July 20, 2021, the MUO confirmed that Steve Harvey would return to host the 2021 edition. This marks Harvey's sixth time hosting the competition, after missing the competition's previous edition.[4]

Selection of participants

Contestants from 29 countries and territories have been selected to compete in the competition. Twenty were the winners of their country's national competition, while nine were appointed to their positions after being a runner-up of their national pageant or after being selected through a casting process.

One contestant was designated after the withdrawal of the original contestant. Amandine Petit, who had been crowned Miss France 2021, was initially supposed to compete at Miss Universe 2021, while Clémence Botino, who had been crowned Miss France 2020, was supposed to compete in Miss Universe 2020. A switch was made between the two delegates due to a potential date conflict between Miss Universe 2021 and Miss France 2022, which Petit was contractually obligated to be present at.[5]

The 2021 edition will see the returns of Equatorial Guinea, Greece, Mongolia,[6] Namibia, Nigeria, Sweden, and Turkey; Greece has not competed since 2018, while the others have not competed since 2019. Barbados, Laos and Malaysia will withdraw from the competition due to travel restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.[7][8][9]
