Sandwell & Dudley railway station is on the Birmingham Loop of the West Coast Main Line, on the outskirts of Oldbury. The name of the station is somewhat misleading; the station is actually located between Oldbury and West Bromwich, and not near Dudley. The nearest station to the town of Dudley is Dudley Port.

History

It was originally opened as Oldbury in 1852 and was one of two stations in the town. The more centrally located Great Western Railway (GWR) Oldbury station was located on the site of the bingo hall opposite the Sainsbury's supermarket and was the only station on the GWR's Oldbury line from Langley Green.

In May 1984, the station was renamed Sandwell & Dudley, having been demolished and rebuilt by British Rail with longer platforms capable of handling long-distance InterCity trains.

The station is operated by West Midlands Trains on behalf of Transport for West Midlands.

Avanti West Coast:

• 1tph southbound to London Euston via Birmingham New Street and Coventry
• 1tph to Preston via Warrington Bank Quay and Wigan North Western:
  • 2 trains per day extend to Blackpool North only, with 1 train every 2 hours running to Edinburgh (7tpd) and 5 trains per day (tpd) running to Glasgow Central. Services to Scotland run via Carlisle. At peak times additional services start/terminate at Wolverhampton.

West Midlands Railway:

• 2tph stopping services between Wolverhampton and Walsall via Birmingham New Street and Aston.

Calls on local stopping services to stations between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury were removed in the December 2022 timetable change.

Transport for Wales:

• 1tp2h to Pwllheli & Aberystwyth (train divides at Machynlleth)
• 1tp2h to Holyhead via Shrewsbury, Wrexham General and Chester, two evening services instead run to Llandudno, and Manchester Piccadilly, via Warrington Bank Quay, respectively.
• 1tph southbound to Birmingham International.
