Wikipedia:Requests for page protection

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by 141.6.8.89 (talk) at 08:00, 22 September 2008 (→‎{{la|Makemake (dwarf planet)}}). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Welcome—request protection of a page, file, or template here.

Before requesting, read the protection policy. Full protection is used to stop edit warring between multiple users or to prevent vandalism to high-risk templates; semi-protection and pending changes are usually used to prevent IP and new user vandalism (see the rough guide to semi-protection); and move protection is used to stop pagemove revert wars. Extended confirmed protection is used where semi-protection has proved insufficient (see the rough guide to extended confirmed protection)

After a page has been protected, it is listed in the page history and logs with a short rationale, and the article is listed on Special:Protectedpages. In the case of full protection due to edit warring, admins should not revert to specific versions of the page, except to get rid of obvious vandalism.

Request protection of a page, or increasing the protection level

Request unprotection of a page, or reducing the protection level

Request a specific edit to a protected page
Please request an edit directly on the protected page's talk page before posting here

    Current requests for protection

Place requests for new or upgrading pending changes, semi-protection, full protection, move protection, create protection, template editor protection, or upload protection at the BOTTOM of this section. Check the archive of fulfilled and denied requests or, failing that, the page history if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

    Current requests for unprotection

Before posting, first discuss with the protecting admin at their talk page. Post below only if you receive no reply.

    • To find out the username of the admin who protected the page click on "history" at the top of the page, then click on "View logs for this page" which is under the title of the page. The protecting admin is the username in blue before the words "protected", "changed protection level" or "pending changes". If there are a number of entries on the log page, you might find it easier to select "Protection log" or "Pending changes log" from the dropdown menu in the blue box.
    • Requests to downgrade full protection to template protection on templates and modules can be directed straight here; you do not need to ask the protecting admin first.
    • Requests for removing create protection on redlinked articles are generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand.
    • If you want to make spelling corrections or add uncontroversial information to a protected page please add {{Edit fully-protected}} to the article's talk page, along with an explanation of what you want to add to the page. If the talk page is protected please use the section below.

Check the archives if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

Makemake (dwarf planet) (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

This article was reprotected by User:Ckatz 20 minutes after User:Stifle unprotected it with the justification of frequent vandalization, when no edits occured between being deprotected and reprotected, with no history of frequent nor systematic vandalism in the page history. I fail to see any justification in this action, or any reason the page should be permanently protected. As I recall, just because an article appears on the Main Page does not automatically confer pre-emptive protection, and this article has not been on the Main Page for months. There is still no justification on the talk page for protection. 70.55.85.43 (talk) 12:29, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Makemake (dwarf planet) (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

This article has an edit comment making it permanently protected, but no justification is given on the talk page. There is also no proof of massive or systematic vandalism in the page history. It appears to have been protected when it appeared as an "in the news" item, some time later it was deprotected, and immediately reprotected. 70.51.8.158 (talk) 09:05, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Unprotected Stifle (talk) 15:28, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I won't reunprotect as that would be wheel warring, but would encourage unprotection as protection is not pre-emptive and no vandalism was edited in the short time between unprotection and reprotection. Stifle (talk) 12:37, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There has only ever been three vandal edits[1][2][3]. The last one was on 6 June 2007. Protection seems unwarranted. -- zzuuzz (talk) 18:52, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Could the actions of admin User:Ckatz please be reviewed concerning his over-zealous blocking activities on numerous astronomical articles. This user does not seem to be fully cognisant of the protection and semi-protection policy. Thanks. 86.24.126.222 (talk) 22:21, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Comment I'll leave this one up to other admins to review. To be perfectly honest, the high-profile astronomy articles are a constant source of IP vandalism, and the ratio of good edits vs. vandalism is quite low, which tends to eat up a lot of time on the part of regular contributors. I would also ask that the complainant perhaps outline his or hr history with regards to these articles, as it seems to be quite an unusual request from an IP with only a handful of edits starting today. --Ckatzchatspy 23:46, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Comment so you're saying that astronomy articles should be permanently protected? If so you're privately doing a policy change that is not currently supported by an official policy of restricting Wikipedia to only registered users. 70.55.203.112 (talk) 05:47, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Comment perhaps you're unaware of ISPs rotating the IP addresses of users? 70.55.203.112 (talk) 05:48, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    Comment you're listed as a member of WP:ASTRO. If you read WT:ASTRO, perhaps you'd recognize me. 70.55.203.112 (talk) 05:49, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This isn't really the place to debate contributions... and please don't presume to speak for me (or my intentions.) You're active on the talk page (and elsewhere I presume), I'm active in most of the core Solar System articles. As for the page-protection, the reality is that those articles - many of which are FA-class - attract a lot of vandalism; so much so that it actually distracts from the work of maintaining and updating the articles. As soon as protection is removed, vandalism resumes, and often as not protection is requested again. Further to this, there have been very few requests from IPs to actually edit the semi-protected pages. The policy does allow for extended protection if it appears to be in the best interest of article stability. --Ckatzchatspy 06:05, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Quote To be perfectly honest, the high-profile astronomy articles are a constant source of IP vandalism. No they are not, because they are permanently semi-protected by you. As has been said above, you are setting your own policy. You clearly don't like IP editors; you haven't even got the decency to respond to their comments on your Talk page, so I can only assume that your contra-policy actions are due to this attitude. Pre-emptive semi-protection is not allowed, and this is what we are talking about here. Could another admin please unprotect the articles in question. I find no justification whatsoever for their continued semi-protection. 141.6.8.89 (talk) 08:00, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Current requests for edits to a protected page

Ideally, requests should be made on the article talk page rather than here.

    • Unless the talk page itself is protected, you may instead add the appropriate template among {{Edit protected}}, {{Edit template-protected}}, {{Edit extended-protected}}, or {{Edit semi-protected}} to the article's talk page if you would like to make a change rather than requesting it here. Doing so will automatically place the page in the appropriate category for the request to be reviewed.
    • Where requests are made due to the editor having a conflict of interest (COI; see Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance), the {{Edit COI}} template should be used.
    • Requests to move move-protected pages should be made at Wikipedia:Requested moves, not here.
    • If the discussion page and the article are both protected preventing you from making an edit request, this page is the right place to make that request. Please see the top of this page for instructions on how to post requests.
    • This page is not for continuing or starting discussions regarding content should both an article and its discussion page be protected. Please make a request only if you have a specific edit you wish to make.

It's getting quite bad now... the anon reverted, added back the unsourced material and extraneous section titles, then another innocent editor has tried to cleanup what was already cleaned up! Tila Tequila (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Semi-protect This article is very hard to keep intact. If you check the page history, you'll see that the past few edits (or rather, all the way down the entire page) have been nothing but vandalism from a bunch of different anonymous IPs, and on some days it was trashed more than once on the same day. I requested that this page be semi-protected once three weeks ago, and the results were very satisfying for the week that it was protected. I would like it to be protected again. I was about to request full protection, however I think it may be a bit much.

I would also like to add that vandalism has even left some bits of information intact even after it was reverted, because the editors who reverted it didn't know if it was verifiable information or not, thus they simply left it there. I had to revert it. Lady Galaxy 02:25, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A request to semi-protect this page was just recently declined by User:Voice of All. Since then there was just vandalism from one user (User:Esle9), who will be blocked for any further vandalism. Therefore I can't see a new reason why it would be appropriate and justified to semi-protect this article. Accordingly this request has to be Declined, as there is not enough recent disruptive activity to justify protection at this time. If there's significantly more disruptive activity in the future, consider relisting. —αἰτίας discussion 01:15, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
