In India, October 17 is commemorated as "Digital Society Day" since this was the day in 2000 that India notified Information Technology Act 2000, a legislation which provided legal recognition to Elctronic Documents, Digital Signatures as a legally recognized means of authntication of electronic documents. These measures along with the recognition of Cyber Crimes etc marked the day as a momentous day for the "Digital Society".

The first time October 17 was recognized as the Digital Society Day was by Cyber Law College,(www.cyberlawcollege.com) a pioneering Cyber Law Education Center in India.
