Pardus is a Linux distribution developed in Turkey, as a product of the Pardus Project. It was named after the Latin (and scientific) name for the Anatolian leopard. Lots of daily used applications are in its standard package. Users do not need to have much Computer or Linux knowledge to use it.[2]
Developers
Pardus was started and is developed by Turkish National Research Institute of Electronics and Cryptology (UEKAE), which is under the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK).
Packages
The first version, Pardus 1.0, was released on 2005-12-26. The Pardus Live CD was the first product of the Pardus Project.
Pardus 2007.3 included the Linux 2.6.18 kernel, the OpenOffice.org office suite, internet tools (browser, e-mail, instant messaging, etc.), multimedia and graphics tools (video player, music player, etc.), games, and many other applications. COMAR is the configuration manager developed in-house, and Tasma is the custom KDE system configuration tool.
The Pardus 2008.1 Installation CD included the Linux 2.6.25.16 kernel, the OpenOffice.org office suite, internet tools (browser, e-mail, instant messaging, etc.), multimedia and graphics tools (video player, music player, etc.), games, and many other applications. COMAR is the configuration manager developed in-house, and Tasma is the custom KDE system configuration tool. KDE has been updated to 3.5.10, along with other important infrastructure components: Python 2.5, Java 6, Mozilla Firefox 3.0.1, OpenOffice.org 2.4.1.
Pardus 2009 is the latest version of Pardus. It includes 2.6.30.1 kernel and the latest version of popular Linux software. Pardus 2009 uses the KDE 4 desktop environment and includes OpenOffice 3.1, Python 2.6.2, Mozilla Firefox 3.5, Gimp 2.6.6 and also applications like Kontact, Kopete, Kaffeine, k3b and Amarok. Applications can be easily updated to their newest versions over the internet with the Pisi package management tool. Pardus 2009 includes advanced network manager tools and is compatible with most of the latest hardware.
PiSi package management
PiSi (Packages Installed Successfully as Intended, /ˈpiːsiː/) is the package management system of Pardus. It is the primary tool for installing, upgrading and removing software packages. PiSi stores and handles the dependencies for the various packages, libraries, and COMAR tasks. "Pisi" is a Turkish word meaning "kitty", intended as a pun on the distribution's name.
¨One of the most revolutionary and innovative changes with Pardus 2009 is the ability of delta packages, making it unnecessary to download the whole application in an update or upgrade. Consider that the application the user listens to his/her MP3 files has released a new version. It is not necessary to search for, find, download, uninstall the old version and install the new version by clicking many 'Next' buttons. Pardus Package Manager, running on top of PiSi, fetches all updates with the click of a button. In its simplest terms, Package Manager downloads only the 'difference' of the old and new versions, a small delta file in technical terms. With this new feature, updates are now no more than 10 percent of the original package in terms of size. In other terms, Pardus 2009 is the best friend of users with limited internet connectivity, preserving their quota¨.
Some features of PiSi include:
- Uses the LZMA Compression Algorithm
- Written in Python
- Package sources are written in XML and Python
- Database access implemented with Berkeley DB
- Integrates low-level and high-level package operations (dependency resolution)
- Framework approach to build applications and tools upon
- Beginning with Pardus 2009, delta packages are on by default.
