The SRM University (Sri sri Ramaswamy Memorial University), formerly SRM Institute of Science and Technology, is a deemed university in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. It was founded in 1985 as SRM Engineering College in Kattankulathur, under University of Madras. It has 7 campuses, 4 in Tamil Nadu—Kattankulathur, Ramapuram, Vadapalani, Tiruchchirappalli and others in NCR, Sonepat and Gangtok. The institute gained deemed status during the 2003-2004 academic year and was renamed SRM Institute of Science and Technology. It became SRM University in 2006, when it attained the status of a full-fledged university, under section 3 of the UGC Act 1956.[1][2]
The university is approved by the University Grants Commission and is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).[3] It has been given an overall B+ Grade by NAAC.[4]
The university has faced a controvery regarding with their admission processes. The Chennai Central Crime Branch police on 26 August 2016 arrested SRM University chancellor T.R. Pachamuthu alias Pari Vendhar in connection with cases of cheating filed by parents of some medical course aspirants and the mysterious disappearance of film producer Madhan. The Chennai Central Crime Branch police said they had found prima facie evidence of his involvement in cheating gullible students to the tune of Rs.75 crore.[5]
Campus
Kattankulathur Campus (Main Campus)
Located about 35 km[6] away from the city of Chennai, this campus is situated on a 250-acre site overlooking Grand Southern Trunk Road (GST Road), NH-45. The main campus at Kattankulathur consists of a College of Engineering and Technology, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, College of Science and Humanities and a School of Management.
The Campus is located near Potheri station at SRM Nagar. There are 8 boys hostel and 6 girls hostel in the campus which can accommodate nearly 55000 students each year. Apart from this the college has Java as a main University Canteen. The college runs private buses for free to visit the campus.[7] The T P Ganeshan auditorium is the main college auditorium with one main hall and two mini halls. The campus is divided into two parts. Main campus for core departments and annexure campus for side branches. The college has several clubs to engage students in extracurricular activities.
The college also organises AARUSH which is the techno management fest of the college with more than 40 events. Milan is the cultural fest of the college with participants from all over the country.[8]
Kattankulathur Campus also houses the SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Center and the SRM Hotel. The SRM hospital can accommodate 1200 in-patients with 25 specializations in PG education in medical science..
The campus also accommodates the SRM Institute of Hotel Management, SRM Arts and Science College, Valliammai Engineering college (SRM Group) and Valliammai Polytechnic college.
In 2014 the university announced a plan to open a law school at the campus.[9]

Ramapuram Campus
The Ramapuram Campus is the second campus of SRM University and is located at Ramapuram, Chennai. It houses three colleges, the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, SRM Dental College, and Easwari Engineering College. It also provides Bachelor of Architecture, MBA and Master of Technology courses. It occupies 30 acres of land and also has an SRM Hospital on site.
Vadapalani Campus (City Campus)
Considered the smallest of the SRM campuses, is located in the center of Chennai city. This campus houses the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Faculty of Management Sciences, Faculty of MCA, and the Sivaji Ganesan Film Institute. The SRM Institutes For Medical Science is also located within the campus.[11]
Modinagar Campus, Ghaziabad, Delhi NCR Region
The 25-acre campus at Modinagar on Delhi-Meerut highway houses the faculties of Engineering & Technology, Management and Teacher Education.[11]
Irungalur Campus, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu
SRM established a Medical college known as Chennai Medical College Hospital and Research Centre (CMCH&RC) on the outskirts of Trichy in 2008. The Hospital is equipped with 750 beds. It is in Irungalaur, Manachanallur Taluk on the Trichy-Chennai highway 28 km from Tiruchirappalli. Anna University affiliated T. R. P Engineering College is in the same campus started in 2010.
Sonepat Campus, Haryana
The 55-acre campus at Sonepat , Haryana is located in the Rajiv Gandhi Education City.It houses the Faculty of Engineering & Technology, and Faculty of Management. they have Faculty of Law, Faculty of Library & Information science, Faculty of Finance & Commerce, Faculty of Humanities and Ph.D courses are also available.SRM University campus is planning to have Teaching Hospital and Medical College from 2016.[12]
Gangtok Campus, Sikkim
SRM University opened a 100-acre campus in Gangtok, the state capital of Sikkim during the 2014 academic year. Initially, distance education in courses such as business administration, science, hospitality and tourism would be offered, before starting full-fledged engineering programmes.[9]
Student Life
Students of SRM University can join multiple clubs and organisations. These clubs are backed by the Directorate of Student Affairs. Many student run organizations operate independently as well and do not come under the aforementioned bodies.

SRMSAT
On 12 October 2011 the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced successful launch of SRMSAT,[13] a nanosatellite designed and created by a group of 50 students from the SRM University under the guidance of ISRO scientists.[14] The satellite weighs just 10.4 kilograms (23 lb) and was created at a cost of ₹15 million (US$180,000) to monitor trace gases from space.[14] Currently, the team is working on a lunar mission.
Festivals
SRM University hosts some of the most sought College festivals in India. Some of the festivals are:
- Milan: A cultural festival hosted by SRM University during the months of February or March.
- AARUUSH: A national level techno-management fest that takes place during the month of September. It started in 2007.
Controversies
2016 MBBS Admissions
Venkatesan, an aspiring MBBS student, had paid Rs 62 lakh for a medical seat in SRM college to Madhan, a film producer. But since the cut-offs were high and NEET was enforced, he asked Madhan to return the money. Madhan returned Rs. 10 lakh through his brother Sudheer, but decamped with the rest alleged the complaint. His parents had filed a complaint at the Chennai police commissioner’s office on 31 May 2016, alleging that Madhan is yet to return Rs 52 lakh taken from him for brokering a medical seat at SRM University.
Questions are now being raised over the extent of his links with the SRM group and his proximity with the Chancellor, Dr Pachamuthu, who is also the chief of the political party Indiya Jananayaga Katchi, a small ally of the BJP in Tamil Nadu.
University chancellor arrested & released on bail
The Chennai Central Crime Branch police on 26 August 2016 arrested SRM University chancellor T.R. Pachamuthu alias Pari Vendhar and released on bail on 8 September 2016 in connection with cases of cheating filed by parents of some medical course aspirants and the mysterious disappearance of film producer Madhan. The Chennai Central Crime Branch police said they had found prima facie evidence of his involvement in cheating gullible students to the tune of Rs.75 crore. They booked him for offences under Sections 406 (Punishment for criminal breach of trust.), 420 (Cheating) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.[5]
